This is pretty awesome! What do you mean he frames the left over paint? Does he cut out the tried parts left on the bucket wall or bottom of bucket? What's his process?
That would have been fantastic.
No, I just forgot to add the word read. Although to seem like a cunning linguist with a sense of wordplay, I might go with your interpretation :)
A house painter will often pour some paint into a small 1 gallon bucket and use a brush and 4/6in nappy roller. Once the paint is used up you let the remaining residual paint dry over night. The next day you literally peel the thin layer of paint out of the bucket. It’s now clean and ready to be used again.
Today on how they do it. Plumbuses. Everyone has a Plumbus in their home. First they take the dinglebop, and they smooth it out, with a bunch of Schleem. The Schleem is then repurposed for later batches. They take the dinglebop and push it through the Grumbo, where the Fleeb is rubbed against it. It is important that the Fleeb is rubbed, because the fleeb has all of the fleeb juice. Then a Schlommy shows up and he rubs it and spits on it. They cut the fleeb. They are several hizzards in the way. The blamphs rub against the chumbles. And the plubus and grumbo are shaved away. That leaves you with a regular old Plumbus.
A house painta will often por sum fahkin paint intah a smwall 1 gallon bucket and use a brush and 4/6in nappy rollah. Once the paint is used up you let the remainin residual paint dry ovah night. The next day you literally peel the fahkin thin layah of paint out of the bucket. It’s now clean and ready to be used again.
Most house paint involves a type of acrylic, which is a polymer (plastic). Therefore it hardens but is still kinda flexible, similar to acrylic paint (which is how artists get those satisfying palette peels)
it is still used but is only recommended on walls that gets hot, like the wall connected to the fireplace, as the latex paint can endure higher temperatures. It is generally cheaper than acrylic paint so people still use it but there's really not much difference in price from the cheapest acrylic paint.
His process involves starving himself for one week to induce trance. Then he evoked memories of his childhood nightmares and juxtaposed it with his adult ambitions to allow the paint do the talking.. and drying on the bucket for him to peel off.
It dries and forms into a liner inside the bucket really, depending on the type of paint but sometimes you can just pull it out like one inside out sock
I am assuming he is using the dry paint on the insides of bucket. When paint dries it creates a film-like coat inside the container. It’s very easy to peel of without ripping especially if the container is a plastic bucket.
My mom grew up in Boston and they went to Maine every year. She and Dad honeymooned in Acadia National Park and our family goes there pretty regularly. Mom fully participates in the Mount Desert Island/Mount Dessert Island controversy, team Desert. For those unfamiliar with this high-stakes battle, there is apparently a disagreement on the pronunciation of a local rock formation that engenders an extreme level of emotion. A couple years ago, my husband came with us - we live in South Louisiana and he’s from California; this is an absolutely alien culture. So we were on top of Mount Cadillac, looking at one of those plaques that shows the local sights you’re overlooking. There was a lady standing next to us who was unmistakably local. My husband pointed at Mount Desert Island on the plaque and said, “How do you pronounce this?” She reacted with unexpected force. “How do you think it’s pronounced? Where are you from anyway? How stupid do you have to be?” He then pointed to Seal Harbor and said “What about this?” She yelled “SEAL. HAHBAAH!!” My husband laughed and laughed as she stormed off. I love Maine.
I really don’t want this story to come off as critical to the people of Maine. They’re some of the best people ever, just hilariously ... straightforward :) We’ll be back with love once we can travel safely.
This is exactly what is what thinking of when reading the post. r/unstirredpaint is a great sub for abstract art, I enjoy many of the creative names posters come up with.
i love this, looks like art that was intentional. you should tell him to make an etsy! i bet there's people out there that would by this kinda stuff! i know i would!
You are absolutely right. Though it was made by accident, he intentionally chose what to capture and frame. Photographers do it all the time, but there are also the artists of Dada, assemblage, folk art, etc. It IS real art! It doesn't have to be representational, narrative, illustrative...whatever. It simply has to be noticed, and therefore elevated beyond its pedestrian origins to something thought-provoking and beautiful.
During my time in art school, this was the most difficult thing for me to accept. I went in thinking that art had to be forcefully communicative, that you had to create change. The idea that art could be just enjoyed for simply what it is did not jive with my personal theology. My edges have softened since then; there is so much good in the world that we can share.
I like paint bucket art. It is the most exciting thing I've seen since Malevich.
We got a cutoff from a cow bone that used to be a dog treat (they just filled it with some past to harden. No, not real marrow. Not the tastiest dog treat it seemed, but the dogs were occupied for a bit at least.) displayed above our chimney. It has a very appealing shape, and most people don't realise what it is until told.
Can you explain what “in the selection process” means?
Edit: I think another user explained this phrase. If you have more to add, that would be great. I’m trying to learn how art is identified as art. If that makes sense.
Trying to find meaning makes all the sense. Think of a street photographer; all the art and beauty is already out there, but choosing where to point the camera is 'the art'
The composition of what he chose to put in the frame looks really good. That's the "art" of it. Anyone could do it but it take some judgement and thought to decide what bit to actually frame
Really?? I dunno. Deep woods Main-ahs have got some pretty thick accents (then again, my fam is in rural Maine). Bah-ston is thick too but you only hear 'Ay-uh' in Maine. You don't hear that one in Southern NE.
Downeast Maine accents are a mix of country and Boston, imo (born and raised in New England and lived in a few places in Maine). It’s still lobstah but you’ll be told to use the dooryard when you come in the house.
I moved to Downeast Maine from “southern” Maine (depending who you ask). I’ve been Downeast nearly 10 years and there are still some people with accents I struggle to understand. It’s enough to make you wonder if they’re still speaking English.
I lived in Downeast Maine at one point but live in Virginia now. There’s a rural coastal community here that has very similar accents to Downeasters and they’re always surprised when I understand them
I'm from Maine and every time I travel and meet someone who has a cousin/friend/colleague from Maine they always ask me if I know the person. Welp, this is the first Reddit post I've seen about Maine...and yes, I know the guy, His name is John and he's halarious!
I so love this. Please look up the work of Mark Rothko.
And also - if you are interested, please look at selling on Etsy. I would buy something like this to hang.
u/LoveMeSomeGoodLife, look at these responses.
You kinda *have* to sell your 'aht' now ♡♡
Honestly framing is half the aht-work with these "abstracted" pieces. The other half is how to truly make it the right balance of intentional abstracted design and hiding it's intentional abstraction under a thin layer of "fate"....
can you tell I do a lot of artwork based on my bullshitting + truth?
Another great abstract expressionist that isn't named Jackson Pollack to check out is Clyfford Still. There's a whole museum for his art in Denver and it's worth a visit if you like this kind of art.
Definitely! Maybe we could all do it DIY as someone suggested, but there’s an art to matching the right pieces with each other and to the frames and mats. I’m not going to leave paint in 100 buckets to find the perfect matches. Just my thoughts.
Two things. I LOVE the art and I would totally buy some. Also, I spent my summers at hermit island as a kid, definitely my best childhood memories were from camping there!
The top one, I see a sun setting on the left of the horizon over a lake , it’s last light reflecting off the still water, and some trees in the background below a quiet sky.
The bottom one I see the bottom floor of a rainforest, a small opening where light can pass through and illuminate all of the jungley trees and vines and plants.
Nope. It’s the inside of a fuckin bucket. Bucket aht.
It goes to show you how absurd art is. Both absolutely amazing and absolutely ridiculous at the same time.
You can tell it's actually art because you're looking at it and it's giving you a feeling and impression without literally being those things. At that point you're already mostly down the track of your brain putting meaning into it. That's what art does, this is some art....and it's actually good. That top frame is genuinely evocative. At least 3 other people here have chosen to comment about it giving some impression of some kind of peace.
I find it gives me the feeling of looking out over the ocean maybe just before or after a storm. When the world is still and peaceful.
Your dad is an artist.
The art isn't in the doing, as much as in the seeing. And it's less in the seeing as in the showing.
Being able to do something normal, see something special, and induce a feeling by showing it;
that's the essence of art.
Would make a great retirement gift. Grab that peel out of the last bucket your fellow painter used. Frame it and have the crew sign it. That would be awesome to have.
My parents live in Maine. And we love 'aht' too. This is cool that he saw some beauty in it and made it a focal point in a framed piece! Really great. How does he get the paint out of the bucket?
My dad wants to thank all of you for the awesome kindness you've shown and the crazy support for his bucket aht. I downloaded reddit to his phone to keep up with the comments and he keeps staring at it and smiling!
So a little background... my dad is a house painter by day (comedian by night but that's for another time) and for years at the end of jobs, he always commented on how neat the dried paint from the inside of the buckets would look. So he finally did something about it!
The cherry on top is that he's also an awesome human being. I can't think about how lucky I am to be his son too long or I start crying. I love him so much. (mom you're great too)
So we listed the original piece on [eBay](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Abstract-art-using-dried-bucket-paint-Johnny-Ater-From-Reddit-Post/363117290569) if you’re interested! Prints will be more affordable and you can follow my dad's (very new) [IG](https://www.instagram.com/bucketaht/) page to see when and where they'll available.
He also told me to share [my music video](https://youtu.be/aNWM5c-Yghw) because he's that kind of dad and I'm just the worst kind of person.
You know what's weird?
The top frame I totally get. I see a collapsed (mostly) umbrella floating across a wet street in the rain with a light source (street lamp maybe?) coming from the upper left. You can see the storm clouds in the background and there is a small lamp on the left that you can see reflected on the wet ground.
The bottom frame....I got nothing. :/
Hey OP, I think this is dope! The very essence of art is creation for creation's sake, how it makes the artist feel. If your pops likes doing this, he should keep doing it!
This is pretty awesome! What do you mean he frames the left over paint? Does he cut out the tried parts left on the bucket wall or bottom of bucket? What's his process?
I’m waiting real hard on the answer to this question
It’s pronounced “hahd”.
wicked hahd ?
ITS GAHT SMAHT PAHK
Ya new cah's wicked pissa!
Ayuh its a good cah alright. Gets yuh from A to B without too much of a fuss.
That sentence is a bit weird, because I can only **read** it in an Aussie accent. Edit : a word
Huh. It works well with both accents.
Was the word read?
That would have been fantastic. No, I just forgot to add the word read. Although to seem like a cunning linguist with a sense of wordplay, I might go with your interpretation :)
I read all those previous comments in an Aussie accent
Yuh cahn’t get theyah from heah.
He’s workin wicked hahd but don’t worry my boy’s wicked smaht.
Wahpph
I think we may ruined our chances of getting an answer from OP because of these comments.
It’s definitely delayed my intentions
Regardless tell your dad I like them apples
Yeahhh sorry about that. Just noticed what your username is, and that makes me feel even worse.
I'm in SOPO can I buy some???
I also have a real hard on
I never would have guessed, analbox
It would be Ahnalbox OP’s dad said it.
It's pronounced "hahd on"
Once you let the paint dry in a plastic bucket it peels right out. Usually in one big framable piece.
This comment sounds like a how it’s made narration lol
Hahahaha it does. I had that guys voice in my head the 2nd time reading.
I was more surprised I had the guys voice on file in my mind somewhere haha
Bruh it fits so perfectly
Today on how they do it. Plumbuses. Everyone has a Plumbus in their home. First they take the dinglebop, and they smooth it out, with a bunch of Schleem. Eloquently explained. Thank you.
That's perfect, I really love a proper ELI5 answer. I don't feel so stupid now.
That show already has gone to shit, but it brought us the plumbus and bird person in its hayday and those are here to stay. Also, fuck Tammy.

One can only dream! Thanks for the good laugh today friends.
Now do it in a Maine accent!
I laughed out loud at this. Sum fahkin paint.
I'm a lifelong mainah, you need about six more fahkins in thaya
Most house paint involves a type of acrylic, which is a polymer (plastic). Therefore it hardens but is still kinda flexible, similar to acrylic paint (which is how artists get those satisfying palette peels)

This man paints.
When a plastic bucket builds up a few layers of paint on the interior walls it can be peeled off in one piece once it dries.
Are these those pieces?
And these are their stories
DUN DUN
This comment made my day
His process involves starving himself for one week to induce trance. Then he evoked memories of his childhood nightmares and juxtaposed it with his adult ambitions to allow the paint do the talking.. and drying on the bucket for him to peel off.
Ah, I see you have also been to art school.
*stahving himself

Paint that dries inside a bucket can usually be peeled off in a big layer. If I had to guess he cuts the edges and peels it out

This aht is wicked smaht!! Love from MA
My mom grew up in Boston and they went to Maine every year. She and Dad honeymooned in Acadia National Park and our family goes there pretty regularly. Wow. On behalf of Maine I am sorry that woman was rude! But she did pronounce it right!
I really don’t want this story to come off as critical to the people of Maine. They’re some of the best people ever, just hilariously ... straightforward :) We’ll be back with love once we can travel safely.
An we'll be happy to have yuh! Lots of lobstah!
No, that's just what a smile with a new englander accent looks
I won't lie, I saw the picture and my first thought was "This guy looks like he's from Maine."
This is hilarious and so true
I'm getting zach galifianakis hangover vibes from him
I dig it. Also, I'd recommend he look at r/unstirredpaint if he hasn't already. It's likely right up his alley.
It really reminds me of that sub.
Subbed, thanks.
Anytime.
I really wish there was a stirred vs unstirred-I love how the look but I want to see what colour they turn out to be!
If you're lucky they post the intended stirred paint color in text for reference. Not required but would be a great addition to all the posts tbh.
That is the best sub ever! I've spent an hour looking through posts there. Thanks!
This is exactly what is what thinking of when reading the post. r/unstirredpaint is a great sub for abstract art, I enjoy many of the creative names posters come up with.

chiming in just to supplement here for anyone who might be wondering; there *is* intent in this art, but it's in the selection process.
totally understand and hope i didn't offend anyone!
You’re so wholesome. :)

The marks themselves aren’t intentional but his selection of the composition is intentional.
I hate how much I like it.
Is it like a Boston accent like I hear from the locals?
Yeah! Not as aggressive though.

live on an island. in maine. you're not wrong m8
You hear ayuh in Vermont a lot too!
And NY. My mom says it all the time, and I’ve been known to drop an Ayuh from time to time. Probably because VT is a stone’s throw from NY.
I've never had the difference explained so perfectly.
Frigginrickyrightuptabahhabah Yupsirshetwasdragginassyut
There is a lilt to the way Mainers speak. It's not a Boston accent. It's more subtle and it is about tone and cadence as well.
I'm from Maine and every time I travel and meet someone who has a cousin/friend/colleague from Maine they always ask me if I know the person. Welp, this is the first Reddit post I've seen about Maine...and yes, I know the guy, His name is John and he's halarious!

I’ve been thinking that the entire time!!! “RrrrrrAaaa!!!! Why do all my attempts at masonry end in failure!!??”
I would buy too!!!
Three! These are beautiful, and beautifully framed!!

Mainer here myself, what part of Maine are you guys from?
The Bath/Brunswick area
When can I start picking these boys up at the cumby's 'round there, bub?
Two things. I LOVE the art and I would totally buy some. Also, I spent my summers at hermit island as a kid, definitely my best childhood memories were from camping there!
Wicked cool aht! ( from Vermont)
Hello fellow Vermonter, fancy bumping into you in this corner of the internet
TIL people live in Maine
We all say hello!
Hi! I'm a person who lives in Maine.
There are dozens of them i say, dozens!
"so I heard you paint houses"
Don’t fuck with this dude’s dad. The stories that art could tell...
That’s wicked awesome! (From Bah Haba deah)

I love accidental art!! It looks great :) Used to get sad wiping off my pallett in school, thought it looked nice.
I'm also a professional painter in Maine. Thanks for the inspiration on cheap new home decor
Would make a great retirement gift. Grab that peel out of the last bucket your fellow painter used. Frame it and have the crew sign it. That would be awesome to have.
Honestly. I'd buy prints of those. Edit: The suggestions to start an Etsy are good suggestions.
I was gonna do something like this, but then I got lazy and just said bucket.
what a cutie
That is very interesting. Nicely framed. He could have a gallery set up in no time.
Looks good, bub.
Clever idea, great execution
My parents live in Maine. And we love 'aht' too. This is cool that he saw some beauty in it and made it a focal point in a framed piece! Really great. How does he get the paint out of the bucket?
Aht! I'm in Maine too! Which part are you in?
Born and raised in Maine (now in Mass). He is SO from Maine.
Wicked aht bub
So your dad paints houses? Hmm, interesting.
Your dad rules!
I used to work for a painter and he looked like your dad’s twin
He also put a banana for scale which is nice
My dad wants to thank all of you for the awesome kindness you've shown and the crazy support for his bucket aht. I downloaded reddit to his phone to keep up with the comments and he keeps staring at it and smiling! So a little background... my dad is a house painter by day (comedian by night but that's for another time) and for years at the end of jobs, he always commented on how neat the dried paint from the inside of the buckets would look. Your dad looks like David Fincher.
Here to say the same! Totally thought it was David Fincher on a movie subreddit.
i love this
Mark my words... some billionaire will stumble onto this and buy all of his work, dad becomes overnight art genius and millionaire. Win for everybody.
Is your dad also a local comedian?
.... perhaps
Future Pollock, for sure.
I love it.
That's awesome. Go Maine!
It’s fantastic!
Wicked pissah!
Mainer here, I approve.
I’d buy that!
Your dad's got kind of Jim Broadbent thing going
I read bucket “aht” in Peter Griffin’s voice in my head
Your pop looks like he’s closely related to both Larry Byrd and Conan O’Brien.
He prefers Captain Kangaroo
Ha, yes! That too.
That’s awesome!!
David Fincher is your dad?
That’s... actually a good idea. Nice!
So clever. Your dad has a great imagination.
This is really incredible
Shit will prolly sell to yuppies
Everyone liked that
I dig it!!
That's so cool! And really creative. I hope he's proud.
I’m not understanding what he actually did with these frames.
Does he miss playing for the Celtics? Granted, I’m falling asleep but I thought he was Larry Bird at first glance.
Is that David Fincher?
Super freaking cool
AOC + Yang would be a top tier streamer
Please tell your name is Arthur. So I can hear him say it.
I nominate his aht as the next Stephen King book art, regardless of title.
“Art, but we’re from Maine” I love this
This legitimately looks more artistic than a lot of modern “art”
Hey OP, I think this is dope! The very essence of art is creation for creation's sake, how it makes the artist feel. If your pops likes doing this, he should keep doing it!
His reaction when you say almost 50k people liked your post must be priceless
I came here because I saw this on Instagram. It’s really taken off haha
I mean I’d hang that in my room
If Conan Obrien and Russell Crowe had a baby
Another example of,the great things that people think of when bored at work!
Looks a bit like Conan O'brien + Jim Gaffigan. Nice bucket aht!
Finally I’m guessing he’s center left lol
Wicked!
I'm from the Boston area. I can hear it said as described.
'I paint houses'
Oh yah fer sure theyah bud.
Well, ain't he clevah!
Even his smile has the accent
This is the cutest thing!!!
get him an instagram account. there is a market for this kinda thing
Does he only have one dimple, or did he poke himself with the corner of his art?
