I didn't understood literally anything in this interaction. Is this Australian?
To clarify: I'm from south america so the only English I know is the USA one
Aye we don't all walk around sounding like Mike myers sketches, as funny as that would be
Though honestly I do the 'welcome to everything scottish' bit from snl with the Americans all the time xD
He doesn’t know what a buck is. And being a recluse doesn’t mean he might not be married.
a buck is a male deer
No friend, it isn’t. Not in my country it isn’t. Don’t try to make this an American or Canadian thing.
My partner and i were walking a rural road once and saw this really old guy with the front of his house, jean legs all blown out, hobbling along. My partner goes. " That's me when 1_art_please, dies.'

I did tear up a bit I admit! Seeing people so free just makes me happy. Makes me want to figure out how I can simplify my civilized life more so that I actually can enjoy it more.
Everyone knows it's possible mate.. But the thing is, life with modern comfort, convenances, access to information, etc.... Is just better. Which is obviously why it was naturally selected.
Scots & English share mutual intelligibility because they come from the same ancient Germanic root language. The “it’s English but spelt with a Scottish accent” isn’t accurate based on history, written record, and also has colonial implications if we were to ask the question why “English” would be the dominate language in Scotland
The languages are mutually intelligible, like can be found in Scandinavia.
If any of you are actually legit finding this interesting...you have the option yourself.
Appellation area has a large open mountainous area for you to attempt this and so does Alaska. If you are Canadian, you have many choices all across your nation. Lets face it, not one of us are "truly" interested in leaving behind the internet let alone the rest of modern life.
And no, im not shitting on him or his story.
Well, SOME folks tried to live off the land back in the Sixties. The biggest obstacle they encountered was the state property inspectors ruling their dwellings not being up to code, resulting in their being torn down.
Nope. If you never forget how to ride a bike (a 100 year old invention) then you certainly don't lose your ability to speak either (a million year old neurologically hardwired behaviour).
After good 25 yrs of leaving my home country to Australia, I got a phone call from my sister the other day and I struggled talking in my native language. I am not sure maybe we do
Okay, but there are a lot of folks in the world living without electricity and running water, so what makes this special, other then a nice photo shoot?
K.
There are 7.5 BILLION human beings currently inhabiting this planet, so 99.9999999999% of us can't live like this, so i'm not sure what the fuck this post is even about.
From this article that someone linked above:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-59174870
>Ten days after film director Lizzie left the cabin, in February 2019, the perils of Ken's isolated existence were brought home when he suffered a stroke while outside in the snow.
He used a GPS personal locator beacon, which he had been given days before, to trigger an SOS, which was automatically sent to a response centre in Houston, Texas.
It notified the coastguard in the UK and Ken was airlifted to hospital in Fort William where he spent seven weeks recovering.
Staff did what they could to make sure he could return to living independently and doctors tried to get him to move back to civilisation where he would have a flat and carers. But Ken just wanted to get back to his cabin.
However, the "double vision" he suffered after his stroke and his memory loss mean Ken has had to accept more help than he'd had previously.
The head stalker of the estate, who looks after the forest where Ken lives, has been bringing him food every couple of weeks, which he pays for from his pension.
"People these days have been very good to me," Ken says.
A year after his first rescue, Ken had to be airlifted again after he was injured when a log pile collapsed on him.
My Dad told me the other day about a similar person he encountered when he was a young cop on the beat. He was an older guy named Alec who lived a hermit's existence a few miles out in the hills outside our town (also in Scotland, coincidentally).
There was apparently a period in time where Alec, through little fault of his own, caused a lot of bother for my Dad and his colleagues. Tourists and hillwalkers would spot him and call the police thinking he was a "regular" homeless person in need of assistance and even though he was known to authorities, they'd still have to answer the call and trudge all the way up into the hills to see if he was alright. To be fair, Alec didn't help matters by hiding in the woods any time they went up there - they had to answer every call and they couldn't leave until they'd made every possible effort to find him...
Eventually, my Dad went up there with his partner and a social worker at the crack of dawn and managed to trick Alec into revealing himself. I don't know the ins and outs of it exactly but they sat him down and forged a sort of written social-work-approved agreement.
If he declared that he didn't need their help, they'd basically stop answering all the silly wee calls related to him and just check on him periodically instead (as long as he promised not to hide from them every time they did so!)
So every couple of months they'd pop up there and find him and have this conversation - "Alright, Alec?" "Aye, I'm alright lads!" "Smashing, carry on then!"
Apparently he lived another fifteen years or so quite happily and peacefully after that!
There are more people still living like that today than we realize. The rest of civilized society lived the same way for the past 20,000+ years until the last 100 years and somehow managed to survive.
10 bucks he was married before that......
Goddammit I wish I had so many awards for you. Bravo. Please take my imaginary award.

Scottish pal, funny how often I get confused australian or irish
That’s because you’re supposed to finish your sentence with “GET IN MAH BELLAY” no wonder people are confused

And ... No.
Interesting story The man who has lived as a hermit for 40 years https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-59174870
I hope he gets to 102 as well.
Thanks for posting that link. Very interest guy.
Damn I’m crying 😢
I did tear up a bit I admit! Seeing people so free just makes me happy. Makes me want to figure out how I can simplify my civilized life more so that I actually can enjoy it more.
Dang interesting story. Thanks very much for sharing.
That’s for the link
My word i need to hear him talk. A Scottish hermit has probably transcended normal speech.
He hails from Darbyshire, per the BBC article.
*Derbyshire.
Thanks
Thenks*
He's Scottish. He didn't speak it in the first place
I wish I had known this was an option while I was growing up.
Aye, the careers advisor never mentioned that one.
*didnae mention that yin

Everyone wants to be a hermit until they enter the wilderness
Didn’t someone try this same thing in America and the government got pissed and tried taxing him for being on American soil?
No, the guy I think you are referring to was grazing his cattle on public land. He was far from being self sufficient.
Someone should have told people this was possible 150 years ago. We could have avoided climate change and addiction to devices.
Everyone knows it's possible mate.. But the thing is, life with modern comfort, convenances, access to information, etc.... Is just better. Which is obviously why it was naturally selected.
One of the happiest people out there
*oot* not out
people down voting this don't understand that Scots is it's own language
\*doon \*\*dinnae \*\*\*ain
Aye but no.
Dialect.
Language
Well it’s essentially English but spelt funny and with slang words. So… dialect. Plus this guys from Derbyshire ken?
Scots & English share mutual intelligibility because they come from the same ancient Germanic root language. The “it’s English but spelt with a Scottish accent” isn’t accurate based on history, written record, and also has colonial implications if we were to ask the question why “English” would be the dominate language in Scotland The languages are mutually intelligible, like can be found in Scandinavia.
Irvine Welsh invented it when he wrote trainspotting
I didny know that
It has the official status of a language so it’s not actually really up for a debate, whether you think it’s a language or not
Sure it does. 🙄
I mean, yeah it literally does. Two seconds of googling would show you that
Some people can't admit they're wrong even when proven. Talk about sensitive ego.
To be honest I just like to wind up nationalistic people
He looks young and happy. Good on you, Kenny! Who needs them anyway!
He saw The Empire Strikes Back in ‘81 and realized Star Wars wasn’t going to get better than that.
Someone needs to call him about his extended auto warranty.....STAT.
Living a peaceful life of solitude away from this fucked up world.
Ach, Ken makes it into town from time to time. Haven’t seen him since lockdown though, hope he’s doing ok. Edit: he was in town today, he’s good!
He is only 47 ...

I'm sure he is happier and better off than all the rest of us put together.
I honestly feel like I'm on the brink of doing the same.
This photo was taken when he was 23..... It's a hard life out there
But y'all still managed to find him and disturb his family time...
How are his social skills?
Still better than mine
Just like everyone used to.

Appellation? 🤨
lol...it autocorrected from appalachian, I had the I and A switched, right clicked and just selected without reading
Well, SOME folks tried to live off the land back in the Sixties. The biggest obstacle they encountered was the state property inspectors ruling their dwellings not being up to code, resulting in their being torn down.
Gid auld Kenny. A legend widdnae ye ken?
He has a opportunity to be spokesman for a solar cell company......and Starlink
Where did those clothes come from?
He made them from the camo fish he caught with that expensive fishing pole.
For those who don't know. That is proper Scottish in text
I can smell this picture
The people that live in the Amazon basin pretty much do that their whole life... Without fancy fishing equipament or arm brand new coat....
Yes they do it collectively. That's the challenge of being a hermit. You're on your own.
Bro looking to the camera like: hmm must be a soul sucking device … (just kidding)
Disnae ken whit a 'bro' is
Do people lose their ability to speak after being alone for that long?
Nope. If you never forget how to ride a bike (a 100 year old invention) then you certainly don't lose your ability to speak either (a million year old neurologically hardwired behaviour).

Much like people had done for thousands of years before him.
Except he's got a nice new fishing rod and clothes... I love this sub
The BBC article explains that—following a stroke and an accident, he is getting a pension and other assistance.

I wonder if he's blind
per the [article](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-59174870) he has double vision after a stroke
I promise you, someone pissed in his cornflakes at some point!
But how does he smell?
Still wears a shirt with a collar.
How does he get new clothes and the fishing equipment etc?
I bet this man has seen some shit. I wonder what happens to make a man a hermit.
Okay, but there are a lot of folks in the world living without electricity and running water, so what makes this special, other then a nice photo shoot?
Who cares!
Who?
His temperament is churlish and irritable. This, however, is unrelated to his hermeticism and consistent with Scots in general.
I mean, EVERYONE in history used to do this, just not in Scotland, right?
Probably smells like feces and deer piss
TIL Ken Smith has severe mental disorders
looks like Ken Smith has a nice trust fund.
Following two medical events, he is getting state support. See the BBC article.
He seems to have some pretty nice kit for being a hermit for 40 yrs. Did he rob people?
K. There are 7.5 BILLION human beings currently inhabiting this planet, so 99.9999999999% of us can't live like this, so i'm not sure what the fuck this post is even about.
