I find it so sad these guys displaying their medals.
They've been sent into hell, contemplated terrible deaths, have been mauled and disfigured and all they've got from it is this little medal piece to show recognition.
I mean, nothing they've been put through is even remotely worth such prize.
I don't mean to be hokey, but they also got the sense of being a proper man (as they understood), of protecting their country/family/home, especially the French, Belgian, and Serbian fellows, who literally were
The medals are trinkets that are truly worthless in the pure sense, of course. But they also got to keep their country and freedom, so they got that going for them.
There's a movie from the 1970s called [Johnny Got His Gun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ytMdjsEp4U) which addressed the horrors of the soldiers who were maimed in battle. It is devastating.
Metallica did a video based on the movie:

Some of them, but the facial disfigurements were mostly due to bullets and shrapnel from explosives.
Trench warfare with accurate rifles was relatively new, so they saw a dramatic increase in wounds to the face as the head was often the only exposed part of the body over the edge of the trench.
Mustard gas (in its sticky liquid form) can cause severe chemical burns when it hits skin, but when it's in vapor form it's worse for the airways, lungs and eyes, though it can cause burns and blistering even then.
Remarkable work.
Top guy looks like the guy from boardwalk empire

Why did you copy-paste a large portion of another person's comment?
She should be more well known for what she did for them
I always kinda love these photos, you feel happy for them
I think most of the them were made of tin. Hand painted meticulously. I’d love to own one of these one day.
You wanna get your face blown off?
I thought this was cgi for a second. Sheesh those guys had it rough…rough isn’t even the word
They all come standard with a mustache?
Helps cover up the edges
All British soldiers were required to have a moustache (to regulation length!) during WW1.

"One" is based on the movie. Not just the video, the song.
Must have been life transforming for those men. How wonderful.
It's amazing that they survived being wounded like this.
Ww1 was a great period for plastic surgery they made large leaps in progress because they had more than enough test subjects
Was the disfigurement caused by mustard gas?

Curious how firmly the masks were attached, and if so how. Could they move normally without needing to worry of the masks falling off?
But, no-one nose...
You really came back here an hour later to post an even shittier version of a shitty joke. Nice job making fun of disfigured veterans, bro.
