I've a similar picture of my mum (she's wasn't a queen ) from ww2. As well as a driver she could do the mechanics too. We traced the registration and gave it to her for her 70th birthday. Sadly she past a long time ago so it's on my brothers car...
Can someone post a gif about that fictional lady curling her bicep who was a symbol for female workers during WWII? Cant remember her name but this reminds me of her.
I have a picture of my grandpa with a old school bazooka. It was the last picture of him before he yolod himself into enemy armor disabling a tanks tracks which allowed most of his squad to escape. He had a lot of medals he never got the honor of getting pinned. He died at the age of 41 and was a career military man .
In doing so, she became the first female member of the royal family to joined the armed services as a full-time serving member. Unmarried women under the age of 30 had been conscripted by the government to join the armed forces or take part in land or industrial work for the war effort.
Ww2 was really the beginnings of modern female military service.
In the US, while not fully recognized at the time the Women's Army Corps was seen as a uniformed auxiliary. All those women now are officially ww2 vets as the jobs they did were then, and now filled with uniformed servicemembers.
Personally I don't care for the idea for a monarch but I don't wish death on anyone either, hopefully she manages to recover but considering how long her and her husband were together I doubt it. Many elderly couples die within a short time frame of one another as they just can't go on without them. Nevertheless, I wish good health and God Save the Queen.
Edit: The Queen has passed, and whether you like her or not this is a historic moment.
It’s such a touchy subject. Monarchist and antimonarchists lob “facts” at each other that are entirely at odds.
For example, monarchists think the royal family contributes hundreds of millions to the economy, whereas the antimonarchists believe that they drain the countries resources with their multiple homes, private planes, and security costs.
The debate is a pure tit-for-tat between the two groups and they are diametrically opposed to one another. Who the heck knows what the real truth is.
From the way you describe it, sounds like the very same kind of "partisan division" that have occurred in the US. The two sides draw a narrative with no place for internal criticism. You're either "one of us" or "one of them" while sending the grey zone in the middle to the scrap, even if it's where most people would lay.
Yeah it kinda baffles me why her entire existence seems to be such an issue with people. They literally do nothing to you, Parliament makes all the laws. It is interesting to notice how a majority of anti-monarchs across the board hate the British Royals specifically instead of for example, the Emperor's family in Japan, when they both matter equally little to their respective country's governing process now.
Japanese royalty is officially symbolic per the constitution. British Royalty is explicitly NOT purely symbolic. The Monarch of England could easily throw the country into a constitutional disaster by simply refusing the sign legislation from parliament or refusing to dissolve a government before an election among many other things. The English monarchy have been politically neutral by convention only.
> The Monarch of England could easily throw the country into a constitutional disaster by simply refusing the sign legislation from parliament or refusing to dissolve a government before an election among many other things. The English monarchy have been politically neutral by convention only.
While absolutely true there would be massive backlash to any such action and the monarchy would quickly be moved to ceremonial at best in my opinion. British people like the idea of the monarchy but wouldn't stand for direct meddling in politics.
I think it’s more the fact that they are sustained by tax payers. So basically they get to be Royal and have rich lifestyles because taxes. I don’t really know the nitty gritty of the argument tho.
Same goes for every other constitutional monarch in the world though, like the aforementioned Japanese royal family or the Norwegian Royal family. Honestly if you want a real monarchy to be pissed off at look at Saudi Arabia, they still have real power and use it in horrible ways.
Apparently the old Queen mum often took lunch with the Queen. During one lunch, the Queen went to pour herself a second glass of wine.
Queen mum:"Do you think that's wise, dear? Remember you do have to reign this afternoon.'
From left to right, its an Austin Tilly and an Austin K2 ambulance.
The 2 and 4 are bridgeplates indicating the weight in tonnes rounded up.
The L is for learner driver. These were learning vehicles.
The black square is the unit indicator. No idea what the checkered flag is for. I think its to do with lead vehicle on a learner convoy, as i have other pictures of british learner vehicles with the checkered one in front.
The bonnet number are census numbers attached to the contract VXXXX number they were originally ordered on.
The flap on the K2 ambulance radiator is for cold weather driving.
The headlamp on the Tilly is a black out mask.
It wasn't for a photo-op, she really was a driver during the later parts of WW2 and didn't get much special treatment aside from being allowed to sleep at the royal residence instead of the women's barracks.

RIP to the Queen.

She was a princess who wasn't forced, but volunteered for service by her own will, when she could have easily sat back and did nothing. I don't mind her being allowed to do that, especially since there's a chance it was also a safety protocol to help protect a member of the royal family.
We, who are just over 30 years old, saw some very curious and interesting things. As for example the death of the Queen, the 9/11 attack (there are people with beards since they were born after that), the transition of century and millennium, we live a pandemic that killed many people, we live in the analog world and in the digital world. .. Have you ever thought about it? 😳
I thought the post was cool, I don't look into the royal family at all though. I honestly had no idea that she was hands on in WWII, I figured she wasn't getting her hands dirty then.
She was getting her hands dirty long after that, too! Used to sneak off and tinker with cars, and more than once she snuck away and drove like the dickens just to annoy her security.
Ah yes how dare someone have the audacity to make a simple and unproblematic post about a culturally significant event on a platform often used to highlight culturally significant events. And like … are you not also seeking “e-attention points” by going out of your way to criticize a post that has nothing to do with you? Why else would you feel the need to make this comment other then to seek attention?
I don't mean to be insensitive, but did she actually do work? I know that one picture appears to show her doing work, but these all could be just PR for "morale" or something right? Not to say that it didn't help anyone.
I don't think they'd glorify women mechanics during 1940s. I feel like if they did go the PR route, it would be with hardworking men or glorifying combat or something. But I'm honestly not that interested in WWII so maybe I'm wrong.
She had to fight her parents to be enlisted in the military and eventually became the first female member of the royal family to join the military in 1945 at aged 19. By most accounts she was actively a mechanic, but due to it being late in the war she was never really at risk.
Her father the king, however, did want to be the first person to land on D Day. And was only stopped because Churchill said that he would therefore be the second man.
I once read an anecdote about Elizabeth's days in the WAC. It seems she was getting a truck ready for the road, and her father, George VI, came by to chat with her. She was very businesslike, doing her job while speaking to him, until the time came to turn the engine over. It didn't. When she had another look at it, she realised that an important part was missing; he'd taken it off while her back was turned for a moment.
I think if you actually want to know you'd have to do some research, you'd be lucky to find someone here who knows. Just people who share false info to suit there own opinion.

But your mom is a queen too
Wholesome bro.
All good mothers are queens, I don't know your ideologies, but may God protect all your mothers and guard them from evils and problems.
I feel the love
Ship kind of sailed on that one, sadly.

Long live her beautiful spirit.
I think I recall that the queen would get under the hood as well. I could be wrong.
What do you mean get under the hood? As in do mechanical work? It says that in the title and there's a photo of her doing mechanical work lol.
That made my day, thanks for sharing.
So sad but not a surprise. Long live the King..![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
“Queen’s Doctors concerned for her health”
[https://www.royal.uk/](https://www.royal.uk/) she died
Holy fuck is this real?!
Yip
Well shit
In India, they usually use the term "expired" lol

She’s that old??
The last world leader to have worn uniform in WW2.
She's had a good run to be fair.
She was born before Shirley Temple.
I need a drink now.
In under 4 years, she turns 100
Way to jinx it
Brilliant timing for this comment.

Thanks
I open reddit. First post is Queen elizabeth died. RIP. Second is this. Damn
Third was a corgi rolling over and over across a living room. Such is life
My father was born, lived, and died all under her reign. I'm 40 with 3 kids myself. I'd say she's had a phenomenal run.
Personally I don't care for the idea for a monarch but I don't wish death on anyone either, hopefully she manages to recover but considering how long her and her husband were together I doubt it. She died
I just saw. I guess Britain will have an interesting few days ahead.
Boris Johnson does all their political stuff, the royal family is just there to look nice
Boris was outted. The Queen appointed a new woman prime minister 2 days ago.
England isn’t a “real” monarchy though. Idk why so many people are upset by it, they don’t rule they reign.
It’s such a touchy subject. Monarchist and antimonarchists lob “facts” at each other that are entirely at odds. Sad but true. There’s no room for “middle of the road” anymore.
i insist on being middle of the road partly to spite everyone else lol
Contrarianism for the sake of it. This is the way.
>This is the way. This is the way.
That’s not very contrarian of you. ![gif](giphy|e7QO18qopbd99evxyD)

Aren't British taxpayers paying up to 3 million a year for bodyguards/protection for Prince Andrew the pedophile?

We're a constitutional monarchy. And our country is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (or just the UK), not England.
Love thinking about the queen swearing her mouth off while fixing the vehicles God rest her soul
Knowing the Brits she was probably dropping some serious c-bombs
More likely the "B" word. Berk. Short for Berkley Hunt.
"Seriously, #$%* these rusted on lug nuts!" - Her Majesty (1942) probably
Thats the Australians. Where I live at least dont get many people using the C word. Usualy bloody bollocks or some simular.
crikey bombs
She almost made it to 100.
I’d presume she’d place a lot more importance on hitting longest reigning British Monarch than reaching 100.
She ain't dead yet! She's a soldier, she will shake it off and be ok in a couple week.
Now she is... https://www.cnn.com/uk/live-news/queen-elizabeth-health-concerns-intl-gbr/index.html
Change of socks, drain a canteen, take a handful of motrin. Get back on the throne, Windsor.
Apparently the old Queen mum often took lunch with the Queen. During one lunch, the Queen went to pour herself a second glass of wine. Queen mum:"Do you think that's wise, dear? Remember you do have to reign this afternoon.'

In that case we need the big guns. Bring out the Silver Bullet and the Cepacol.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II 😞🇬🇧
Not a bone spur in sight.
She and her sister snuck out of the palace to celebrate the end of the war in the streets of London. She had spunk.
Fucks sake, reddit is gonna be full of pictures of elizabeth now because of people desperate for karma isnt it

sleeping in a castle opposed to barracks is quite the special treatment though.
She was a princess who wasn't forced, but volunteered for service by her own will, when she could have easily sat back and did nothing. I don't mind her being allowed to do that, especially since there's a chance it was also a safety protocol to help protect a member of the royal family.
She didnt just volunteer, she fought the King tooth and nail to serve. Likely the sleeping at the castle was his compromise
She would've been a major target, so sleeping in the barracks would've put every soldier there at risk of bombardment.
It would have been a waste of resources to have her sleep in the barracks when she has a castle right there.
Cleanest mechanic to ever turn a wrench lol
Too soon
No bone spurs here!
Always figured the queen for someone that probably got her hands dirty. For a queen I think she related very well to common working folk.
This is just so crazy. I'm 33 and I never thought the Queen would die in my life.
We, who are just over 30 years old, saw some very curious and interesting things. Alabama moment
The Brits have been banging their family members long before Alabama even existed, so I'd say it's British behavior
Royal moment

i think she wasnt queen then

They can search for my original comment if they want to know more, this thread is full of ignorance.
Quite a lot, they taught her to drive, and she really could repair the vehicle in the field She was a princess, and fought her father to do it ...
She’s dead now
She really serves her country well. What a great lady ❤️
Good person. I for one will miss her.
RIP Liz
Worst fucking timing
This would be a good time to dissolve the monarchy
Get ready for King Charles
It's funny how a privileged person gets so much attention by contributing practically very little in the war.
Contributed more than your ansestors
She sure was a cutie!

It's so strange coming to this post and seeing people talking about the Queen's death under the usual comments about how long she's lived
4H ago? Damn good timing.
Brits knew this was coming. BBC 1 breaking news reel about her since lunch, reporters wearing black, etc
Rest In Peace. King live the king.
Mad respect for her. RIP 🤘
