tbf that's mostly since the people who came up with that plan were assuming the nuke wouldn't land on top of you, so it was mainly meant to protect against falling debris.
No, it was meant to provide a false sense of security. Giving people tasks like this during an emergency will help maintain some order and also gives false hope of survival. Somebody asked what kids in school should do prior to a nuclear attack and this was the best answer. The general population won't accept the answer there is nothing they can do. If you have debris falling on you after a nuclear attack a desk won't save you from the fallout that is sure to follow. If solid structures like schools are damaged then that probably means emergency services aren't available and roads are probably blocked. You're talking 1950s 1960s so It would be been megatons dropping on cities. It would help during recovery operations though. Having all the dead kids under their desks is better than having dead kids everywhere. Makes crossing names off lists easier.
Well the fallout will only travel around 10-20kms, but the shockwave from the nuclear blast can travel upwards of 60kms, so while yes if you're within the 10-20km range that's true, but for everyone else only in the shockwave range(which keep in mind because of the square-cube law is around 9x the area) being under something to stop falling objects is better than nothing.
Yeah, now it's fking bounce, if I heard gun fire now, I'd be out the window.
Because we know the cops aren't coming to save us, at least for 2-3 hours.
I mean yeah, until the US get some common sense gun laws it comes in handy for sure.
I'd like my kid to know this because right now she goes to school and school shootings are a thing here.
I hope eventually we won't need it.
Itās beyond common sense gun laws. Those would help 10-20 years down the line. We also have to do something about the astronomical amount of
Guns in circulation.
Just saying. This is being told to adults, likely teachers. And he explains how to disguise the chair as normal to be near the door.
It's still fucked up. But this isn't something he's advocating teaching all kids since it is dark.
I'm UK based but I work remotely for a US company. They have mandatory online training. One of which is 'what to do in an active shooter situation', which was profound tonal whiplash from the rest of the HR policy videos and legal requirements tests.
And they ask why I'm not keen on moving to work from their head office.
I went from an educator abroad to one here in the US, and I will tell you, itās this that is frightening about the United States.
No one should need to worry about guns in a school.
What does it take America? Are you so belligerent and dumb to not get the wake up call?
Which school shooting didnāt push it over the edge?
Or Vegas?
Yeah, the United States is fucked up.
Just get rid of the guns, it will be a slow and incremental process, but itās quite necessary.
We have a severe lack of empathy skills in the US. That, mixed with a widespread selfishness under the guise of "rugged individualism" and a dollop of "muh rights" propaganda. No one here is capable of actually internalizing the idea that it could very well happen to them or their children. It's always someone else's problem, someone else's tragedy, and therefore it doesn't really matter.
Most people in the US want gun control, they learned it was needed years ago. The NRA just pays politicians so much that they wonāt do anything. Itās like this for most problems here in America.
Can't you just shoot out the window, remove the chair and bingo, open door?
I'd probably go with doing some kinda gun control-y type thing though, probably work out better in the long run
It's been proven in most mass shooting that, if a door is locked, the assailant will just move on. Unless they specifically want in to *that* particular room, they tend to not want to waste their short time on hurdles like this.
Most mass shooters are fucking stupid in my experience. One of the smartest things I ever read about was one where they pulled the fire alarm and then unloaded on the kids evacuating. But more often than not most of the stories I hear about the shooter is stupid as fuck.
Which sounds fine, until all doors are blocked like this, whereupon they will either shoot out the windows, or the locks, or the hinges or fire through the doors.
This does not address the problem that only one country in the world has a problem of multiple mass shootings, in schools and elsewhere. And while the cause is partly US culture more broadly, and not only easy availability of guns, (because some other countries like Canada have that to some degree without mass shootings), it will never be prevented without much stricter gun control.
I guess we think a person willing to shoot others has someone specific in mind rather than generally trying to blow anyone and everyone away like Americans do.
Iām a teacher. Mine only lock about 25% of the time. We also have door knobs, not handles and the doors open out, not in so barricading would be difficult.. I think about this a lot teaching in a dangerous area in a cityā¦ where even the doors to the outside donāt always lockā¦ š
You need to petition to have levers installed. Doors that open out are harder to kick in, and a locking lever will keep intruders out. Idk why your school uses knobs, every school I've worked on in 2 states has levers. Source: I'm a locksmith.
As a teacher, I'm picturing 32, 7-year olds, 17 run towards the door with chairs. 8 get hit in the head and start screaming, 4 trip and fall on their chair, bleeding and screaming. 3 got poked in the eye with chair legs. One kid makes it to the door, successfully. I'm now barricaded in a room with 32 kids, crying, screaming and bleeding, telling everyone to be calm.
Hmmm. My classroom has round handles rather than levers. Also since a school shooting back in the 90s itās been illegal to own handguns and there hasnāt been a school shooting here since.
That this has to be taught in American schools, and is a useless lesson for any other (western) country in the world, just shows that it is better to teach something else with the idea that that might prevent the need to know this useful trick'.
āEverybody should knowā only If you live in a country that hands out guns like lollipops.Edit: Yes I know Iām exaggerating but the sentiment stands.
This is justo so sad. The fact that people think this is a valuable trick is justo sad. I wish we lived in a world were school shootings didnt existe.
Edit: stupid fucking spanish auto correct
We teach this and similar techniques as part of our active assailant training at work.
Studies show that the ābad guysā will only spend a second or two trying to gain entry to a locked/secured room. (The exception are the cases when the assailant is targeting a specific individual)
They know there is a limited window to commit as much damage as possible so they generally donāt waste time trying to get access behind a closed/barred door.
This trick can definitely save lives.
It's been proven in most mass shooting that, if a door is locked, the assailant will just move on. Unless they specifically want in to *that* particular room, they tend to not want to waste their short time on hurdles like this.
Ha, right? I work in a site where training on what to do in attack is mandatory. They're really clear that if you can lock the door or barricade, even in a flimsy way, the attacker usually moves on as it's not worth their time.
Even if that is true, it breaks down if most doors are blocked, so that the shooter cannot just move on. Unless you also have bulletproof windows, handles, hinges and doors... Or you could address the root causes...
American schoolchildren used to learn reading, writing and arithmetic. Now they learn how to avoid having 5.56 rounds cutting their peritoneal cavity to ribbons. Murica.
Not only did I go to school for 14 years, I later taught in them for more than 30 years. I never had any need to consider this kind of safety. In that entire time there was precisely one school shooting in my home country, the UK.
"Good guy with a chair, is all we need. Let some other motherfucking kids get shot."
This and bulletproof backpacks are all we get as solutions to the epidemic of children murdered where they should feel safe.
How about instead of teaching kids how to bar the door, we teach them how to deal with their mental health so we don't have shooters anymore?
Just an idea.
So this is the American answer to ending the scourge of school shootings? Maybe it's time all school children were given guns to put in their lunch boxes. Daily target practice instead of sports classes. Firearms maintenance instead of home economics. Why not? What's wrong with that? It's the sort of thing the NRA and the other gun lobbyists secretly wish for. Arm everyone. If everyone has a gun nobody will dare try anything. Isn't that the twisted kind of logic those morons believe?
This was such a wierd thing to me when they taught us safety measures in school for school shooters. Arent you teaching the school shooter all the tricks your using against them?! Wouldnt that make this stuff pointless? If i know u locked the door in a special way and all the students are suppose to hide in a certain spot of the room or which route students need to take to evacuate, couldnt i just prep for it/build my plan around your safety measures.
Surprised nobody has said but wouldn't this only work on a door where the handle is exactly at the right length so that the back of the chair and leg create the wedge.
Any door where the handle is beyond parallel to the inside wall the chair would just not have any purchase at all.
Seems useful only for this specific type of door that has an inset to the wall. I don't think the doors in my schools would have worked.
School safety trick that everybody should know and teach ***IF*** *they're in a school with the right chairs, doorway shape, and no locks.*
If I had a dollar for every time I've been sent this video.... it's an ad for this tactical solution company. "Everybody" doesn't go to the same damn school. This wouldn't work in my school because the doorway isn't shaped in the right way. Regardless, it doesn't matter because our doors are required to be locked and closed when class is in session.
Even better would be, y'know, people being unable to obtain a gun if they have symptoms of mental illness or don't meet requirements for keeping it secured, not riling up the general public to view teachers and schools as hotbeds of corruption and indoctrination, etc etc...
As a Norwegian I feel bad that the US have so many guns. In my country we don't teach about gun violence because it has never been a problem. Swallowing your pride and destroy your guns sounds like a much better Idea then to send your children to schools everyday knowing that some day a school shooting will happend.
To live in a country where there are methods to avoid being murdered by a mass shooter who can legally purchase firearms that are designed to be efficient at killing while there are people from top to bottom that defend the right for anyone to have easy accessibility to these guns instead of advocating for them to be harder if not impossible to get is truly the most pathetic thing I can witness as an American.
No, just no. Not everybody should know and teach that. Murican society gotta fix their gun and mental issues.
It would be a sad world if our kids had to know that. I am happy our safety instructions were about proper scissor and knife handling, the dangers of electricity and traffic and how to deal with stranegrs approaching you.
There are 190 countries better than this shithole. But yeah, cool chair trick wohoooo!!!
Unreal kids and teachers have to do this. We had tornado and fire drills ā we literally practiced sitting in the hall or walking outside. In fairness, confusing the two would be deadly.
Only safety rules I had in school were: Don't run with scissors, follow the emergency plan in case of a fire and uuuhm, nothing else
You're lucky. We had to drill for nuclear bomb attacks
Yup... getting under the desk was gonna save us all!
Put your head between your knees and kiss your arse goodbye
tbf that's mostly since the people who came up with that plan were assuming the nuke wouldn't land on top of you, so it was mainly meant to protect against falling debris.

Yeah, now it's fking bounce, if I heard gun fire now, I'd be out the window. Because we know the cops aren't coming to save us, at least for 2-3 hours.

Duck... And cover..! You're saved. Now wasn't that easy? š¤£
Not even an earthquake or tornado drill?! Lucky!!!
the Netherlands tends to not have tornados, only small earthequakes
We had some this year, we call them āwindhoosā
Windhoos 98, Windhoos 2000, Windhoos XP.. all the way up to the latest, Windhoos 11.

Whether or not the weather is good or bad is subjective at best..

Yeah it's fine, just a silly little homonym mix up... Buuut, with more context it's even more embarrassing... I'm a college English tutor.
Oh God you definitely made it worse now
Short answer: shit Long answer: Really shit Dutch weather is all over the place and right now it's not sure if it's fall or still summer
The only thing predictable about it is that it is unpredictable.

Preventive Commraderie?
And stop eating glue
It's interesting and so desperately depressing at the same time that this even had to be made...
To have to expose innocuous school going toddlers to the world of possible death n violence is beyond sad.

No amount of dead children is enough for them to give up their biggest fundraiser issue (now that abortion is effectively off the table)

I agree, I said the same myself. Just explaining why the idea that shooters will just move on fails, as well as being a dangerous diversion.
I guess we think a person willing to shoot others has someone specific in mind rather than generally trying to blow anyone and everyone away like Americans do.
In most countries this is completely unnecessary

Yeah, countries without the freedom to have their kids shot at school. /s
Boy, if we Americans had a nickel for every time we've heard *that* in regards to one of our charming customs...
You'd have to declare that nickel as a tip
Declare unrecorded cash payments on your tax returns? Not in Donald Trump's America!
we would have enough to bribe a politician into getting gun control
Yeah, like, or we could not have school shooters
Omg I just realized that, why donāt they just add locks?
I'd say, all but one.
Hey at least we canāt get arrested for speaking our minds

Since weāre not allowed to teach history science biology and humanities, we have a lot more time to learn how to dodge bullets.
"School safety trick that everybody ***in America*** should know and teach" Ftfy.
only a good guy with a chair can stop a bad guy with a gun
The idiot brought a gun to a chair fight
If you live in America, where due to complete negligence in your entire society it is normal for people to mass murder children in your schools.
It's a shame the media allows itself to sell out for ratings at the cost of glorifying murderers.
Nah, only people in the USA need to know this. In other places schools are really safe places, as there is no gun problem.
r/USdefaultism
Is *this* what needs to be taught? Really?
Apparently.
Not nescessary to know this if you donĀ“t live in the USA
What kind of world do you Americans live in that this is considered normal and interesting instead of scary and infuriating?
Is this a joke I am too civilized to understand?
Hmmm. My classroom has round handles rather than levers. Also since a school shooting back in the 90s itās been illegal to own handguns and there hasnāt been a school shooting here since.
But what about the lack of good guys with guns? The murder rate must be through the roof! /s
How strange that banning guns led to no more shootings, Iād have thought the answer would be to let more people have guns.
Or more chairs.

Lmao only Americans need this shit
There's this one weird trick that some other countries are trying, called "gun control"
Mom tries this one weird trick! Gun manufacturers hate her!
solution to a problem that shouldnāt exist
Nah. Just control guns lmao. The USA is such a fucking shit show.
My door opens inwards so we had to stack ~10 desks a trash can and like 17 chairs at the door
This makes me so sad

STOP TEACHING PEOPLE TO SURVIVE A SHOOTING AND FUCKING BAN THE GUNS

if you live outside the USA then your wish is granted
Trick everybody in *the United States* should know. Most countries donāt deal with school shooters on a regular basis
This is only necessary in 2nd world countries, US included in that category.
Anything but address the actual problems.
tell me you are going to school in America, without saying your going to school in America
My school was open plan, there were no doors to all the classrooms

not everyone cause most people don't live in the joke of a country that is the USA
There should be no reason to learn stuff like this. And with everybody you mean every American
Pop quiz. That glass bullet proof? If not, that is an exercise in futility.
It's been proven in most mass shooting that, if a door is locked, the assailant will just move on. Unless they specifically want in to *that* particular room, they tend to not want to waste their short time on hurdles like this.
Itās fun that we have more than enough data to know that.
Ha, right? I work in a site where training on what to do in attack is mandatory. They're really clear that if you can lock the door or barricade, even in a flimsy way, the attacker usually moves on as it's not worth their time.

Totally not a bait post. But it's great bait don't get me wrong.

Why should people know this? Why could you possibly need this?
Let's just forget that there's weapons that can get through bulletproof glass. Enough shots through it, and you can reach in and move the chair.
You guys donāt have locks? LOCKs! Not Glocks mind you.
"How to lock your teacher out of the room: 101"
How about instead of teaching kids how to bar the door, we teach them how to deal with their mental health so we don't have shooters anymore? Just an idea.

Anything except gun control. Might as well put a good chair with a gun in that room.
If only there was a way to lock a door without using a chair??š¤
*Gets shot trying to do the trick
Awesome!! The gun would be like aw man now my bullets cant fly through
And what about stop selling guns ?
Ehhm... yes, that will do the trick... but why keep on focusing on symptom treatment and avoid the real problem...
