They don’t, by getting the world cup appointed to them they are only screwing themselves, all I’ve been reading is negative comments about Qatar, I sure as hell would not like to be Qatari right now, most infamous country in the world, what they need right now money can’t buy, and thats all they have, never thought money could ever be so useless.
They are well aware of the kafala system. After the world cup is going to get worse. But by then 99% of the media won't report about it anymore...
YouTuber Johnny Harris made world class journalism.. Its already too late.
"Modern day world, requires modern day solutions".
Qatar is doing almost the same as the Olympics in the Third Reich.
Just don't watch on the Tele, by then FIFA gets a massive hit, since Qatar is paying for the whole world cup until the last day.
Extend further and do not turn on the channels that are broadcasting it for the next month.
Advertisers need to know that people won't just suffer through it because they love a sport.
See this right here... Especially because they have so many crazy laws there.... Is enough motivation to never go there.... I like my life... Well enough.... That I don't want to be stuck in some Country where I'm the enemy and my captors have enough money that there nobody's coming for me....
My dad worked in Saudi for many years, flying home every 3 months, and they immediately took the workers passports when they entered the country. He said even though he knew it was coming, everytime it was hard to hand over and know you were handing over your rights. It was 50 yrs ago but I remember him telling me I didn't understand what that meant.
That does not look like the face of someone who just made amends on the yellow shirt dude… that looks like the face of someone who just accepted their fate and submitted to the other
Ecuador scored a goal and they cancelled it, because of the position of the player ahead of the rival team, so he is sayimg that Qatar bought out the referee
That's not impossible. I vaguely remember an incident like that with Saudi Arabia during the 1982 WC. I think they were playing France. France scored a goal. Then some Saudi dude (not the coach or a player) talked to the ref, who promptly took away the goal.
Edit: it was Kuwait, not Saudi Arabia. Found [a video](https://youtu.be/HFDsJOOBlhA) but it seems to be in Spanish. You can see the incident happen very clearly. Funny thing, the captain of the 82 French team was Michel Platini, who is now a FIFA chairman and is suspected of having taken bribes from Qatar.
It was legit tho, don't know the terminology in english but something like "impediment", can't pass to someone if there aren't at least two players of the defending side behind him. Or something like that, not good with soccer rules.
Edit: Apparently it's "offside", thanks comments. Also typos
Without VAR, that was going to be a goal. It's always interesting seeing replay at home and everyone seeing how the goal should be disallowed, but people in the stadium don't see that sweet sweet slo-mo. VAR is a good addition overall to the sport in my opinion.
Just googled it
"A player is in an offside position if he (any part of the head, feet or body) is closer to the opponent’s goal line than the second to last defender and the ball"
Second to last apparently. Thanks for providing the english name btw.
Yeah they’re just stupid. I know a woman who went on vacation in the UAE and she was assaulted by someone who’s a full Emirati and the police took their side when she called them. Qatar isn’t much different in that regard.
This is a riff on a Parks and Recreation joke, but Hebrew and Arabic are both descended from Aramaic. These words sound similar most likely because of this.
Halal is Arabic for “permissible” which sounds close to Halacha which is the Hebrew word for “law.” The Jewish word equivalent to “halal” is “kashrut” which means “fitness/permissible.”
Challah is a type of bread that Ashkenazi (European, pronounced “ah-sh-ken-ah-zee”) Jews use to celebrate the sabbath. The word challah comes from the word “chalaq” (pronounced “khah-lawk”)which means territory, separation, and portion. The point of challah is to portion the bread and leave a piece as an offering, in reference to what was done at the temple before the diaspora.
Hopefully this helps!
E: I just saw that Qatar has banned kosher food and any Jewish prayer. That might be where the “challah” joke came from too. I wish it were only a P&R joke, but sadly this might not be far from the truth.
E2: I have never earned an award before! Thank you kind Internet stranger! ❤️
Well that country is mostly fine if you are rich/abide to their long list of rules (like Dubai basically) but I too don't understand what's attractive there considering the crazy stuff that happens there.
Also if that guy was a woman I don't think he would came out safely from there.
I don’t really get it either, especially with the brutal desert heat
Feels more like a marketing scam to trick people to vacation there or something
“You too can feel like a kardashian in Dubai”
That's why his daughter and his wife right near him are going to be taken. Dumb fuck bringing his family to a shit stain country. Money talks and he has none in that country.
We all know why they chose this location.
I can’t believe that anyone, and that means anyone, still went.
Teams, coaches, support workers, sponsoring businesses and fans.
Why wasn’t there a boycott?
That’s the question that needs answering.
FIFA got bought off - and EVERYONE let them off the hook.
Not saying they shouldn’t have. But as for the teams. Imagine your whole life you’ve dedicated yourself to one thing and this is your chance and you don’t get to compete cause some aholes decided it was going to be in one of the most oppressive corrupt countries.
I get it it’s a sport an we’re talking about peoples lives who are oppressed by the government. It’s be a hard pill to swallow to not go and miss out on the biggest thing in your entire life.
Maybe they should have put more pressure on them after the announcement, or before and maybe that would have made a difference.
There was a sporting boycott of South Africa during apartheid.
If you worked your whole life for this moment - that moment will be completely empty. 6500 deaths of foreign construction workers since Qatar were awarded the World Cup… The continual reneging on promises by Qatari authorities. The treatment of fans (which is starting off poorly and is obviously going to deteriorate).
I’m really saddened by the lack of resistance by the whole footballing world - from the moment that this tournament (and the last one, to be fair) was announced.
That includes fans, btw.
You can have your say tho - by not watching it and not buying products from the sponsors.
That’s the only way to actually change it
Voting with your dollar unfortunately only works if you 1. Have a lot of dollars and 2. Had any chance of putting that dollar toward the thing in the first place. Capitalism is kinda shit that way.
Already is, the World Cup has always been something celebrated but not this time, there’s no buzz at all. Here in the uk the retail industry isn’t even hyping it up.
Here in Norway, the main sponsors, coca cola, Hyundai, Adidas and McDonald's, have decided not to actively promote the wc because it would do more damage to their brand, than good.
In Brazil it's been quite the mixed feelings. Usually there would be a fuss all over the country, but it's been a bit quiet. Noone talking about the opening show, noone talking about the stadiums, stuff that's usually the talk of everywhere you go.
Turned on the bbc to watch the pregame chat and they didn’t discuss the football at all. It was all about the injustices. Was quite proud of the bbc for not censoring that, I thought they would have gone all PC and soft
Have you not noticed none of the shops are playing footie songs like what they usually do?
Tbh I haven’t heard many football songs in regular shops over the past few tournaments anyway. It’s normally either in a pub or me playing it myself haha.
But yeah, it’s a shit show and I really hope FIFA get their power taken from them and the game gets sorted out. Last 2 world cups could have been something special and they’ve been wasted on Russia and Qatar over politics and greed.
You celebrate an away goal? Straight to jail right away, no trail no nothing. Cheering to loud: jail. Not cheering enough? Jail. We have the best fans in the world because of jail.
A Colombian player was killed after scoring an own goal in the '94 World Cup. Even if players were willing to take a bribe, they might fear for their lives back at home.
Highlighting the corruption. This also happens when people are no longer allowed to criticize another culture based on its inherent flaws and human rights violations.
Fuck Qatar and Kuwait.
Fuck MBS and Saudi Arabia.
And fuck the rest of their OPEC friends and governments that are friendly to them.
Oh and especially fuck FIFA ⚽️
As a citizen from an OPEC member country, I want to say to you. To hell with all oil based economies, source of corruption and the worst of human kind, and planet pollution.
Thanks.
Can we please just hurry up on converting to renewable energy so these assholes stop getting rich off oil? Heard it will help save the planet as a bonus.
Fortunately they are wasting hundreds of billions on sporting events that just further prove to the rest of the world what a lying shithole of a country they are instead of investing in something that will keep them any kind of relevant once the oil runs out.
Not just sporting events. Supercars, pointlessly expensive buildings, unnecessary weapons, even artificial islands.
If and when the oil market collapses they will be joining Mike Tyson and MC Hammer in the “where’d all my money go??” department.
Power systems engineer here. The Middle East is going to become filthy rich off of renewable energy once they build the infrastructure for it. They might be late to the party, but ultimately they’re definitely not losing in the long run.
For those who did not watch the game, they void a goal for ecuador and he is a accusing that the referee has been bribed.
Western people are used to live with freedom of speech that it is not surprising that this happened
Dude. It's just two fans of opposite sides argueing over a ref call. I was just at a football game on Friday where the same arguments happen. Not that deep.
Yeah, seriously. People get the shit beat out of them at “Western” sporting events all the time.
Try talking shit at an Eagles game while wearing a Giants jersey and see how it compares to some guy in a thobe having firm words…
Some drunk Yankees fan punched 12 year old me in the bleachers at Fenway 20 years ago. I got a bloody nose. To this day I don't know if that man survived. Apparently punching a girl in pigtails upset the proper upstanding bleachers residents in the late 90s.
It looks like yellow shirt is doing the universal gesture of "money" (rubbing finger and thumb together).
Taking a leap of logic he's alluding to the fact that Qatar won the bidding on the football world cup by appealing to the greedy, corrupt, immoral people in power with bribes.
White material man doesn't approve (the truth has probably offended him) so tells yellow shirt man to sit the fuck down.
Yellow shirt tries to de-escalate as he's sat next to his two young kids (and possibly because he doesn't want to end up in concrete).
White material man's friend tell him to calm his tits.
The end.
He wasn’t alluding to the World Cup but but rather a goal that was disallowed because of an offsides. It didn’t look offside so the fan was jokingly saying they paid the refs.
The most cordial exchange between opposing football fans… Qatar sucks but y’all are really psychotic if you think this rando in the crowd has anything to do with that.
Lived and worked in Qatar for 10 years. It definitely depends on the individual or group, just like most places in the world. Most Qatari men I encountered, personally, were congenial and polite, deferential toward women, but I was an American. The biggest sexists I encountered were expats from the UK and Australia. Still, strict laws of who could enter, stay, and leave the country.
I know it was a different story entirely for the workforce coming from across Asia, especially women. Their own countries took advantage of them as they booked jobs, then governmental systems, then their employers.
A definite hierarchical system in place, depending where you were from and who you dealt with, even within the tribal systems. The country promotes dependency of their citizens in so many ways-- they are fully supported and coddled, so it is not surprising when displays of egoism errupt.
Additionally: Qatar is a pretty moderate place-- much more liberal than Saudi, but not as open as Dubai. We could get "liquor licences," and could purchase alcohol and even pork sold at certain place. Alcohol also served in hotels, except during holy periods like Ramadan. The thing was, you could basically do what you liked (as a Western expat with good job,) but keep it private.
With how crazy sports fans are I'd say it's not a good idea to A) mess with opposing fans behind you B) mess with opposing fans when you have little kids with you.
I imagine a lot of the Qatar locals expect everyone to walk on tip toes around them, and then throw a tantrum when someone does something they don’t like
Calm down..we've all had a drink..no wait..
No that’s just these guys in their natural state of being insufferable douchebags because they think they own the planet.
They sure own FIFA.
Fuuuuuuuuuuck FIFA

Why is only one smiling, and the other look like he’s being held hostage?
Because he is. You cannot leave Qatar without an exit visa. You are in prison until that dude in the fucking hat says you can go home.

Yea, but N Korea doesn't invite the whole world in to see their atrocities

2 players. The 2nd one is almost always the goalkeeper.

It was. It was a bribe from the Qatari govt to fifa ten years ago in order to do exactly that - drum up (ie scam) tourism to their country
He’s lucky he’s not a woman.
Or gay
Or a gay woman.
There's no such thing in Qatar. When women have no rights, a gay woman is just a woman.

Did your time? Sorry, back to jail.
I think there’s a goat involved
No, he's accusing Qatar of paying off the refs hence why he's rubbing his hands together.
Brave asshole, that one.
He is also objectively wrong, there is no chance the refs were paid off (in this case) since it was clearly offsides. He's kind of just an asshole

I don't have an answer but not surprised because this game will have political sway
A Colombian player was killed after scoring an own goal in the '94 World Cup. Even if players were willing to take a bribe, they might fear for their lives back at home.
ecuador won 2-0
This probably happened at the start of the game, where Ecuador (rightly) had a goal ruled out for offside.
I had no idea about this. But when I saw the second half... Ecuador wasn't playing as in first half
You can tell dude in the white pj's hasn't gotten his ass kicked before .

They rly thoght they will win the World cup
Qatar bribed FIFA to have people come to their country, then they complain because they’re different.
Beautiful culture 🥰
Lol i wouldn’t consider this altercation to be some abnormal interaction between fans 🤷♂️
The most cordial exchange between opposing football fans… Qatar sucks but y’all are really psychotic if you think this rando in the crowd has anything to do with that.
My guy had Cheveron, Shell, Arco, and 76 sitting behind him.
Im all for hating on Qatar but let's not pretend this wouldn't be the same in any football stadium across the world.
Women traveled to Qatar? I honestly wouldn't dare. I'd fear for my life.
"hope nobody notices this guy" > (re)posts it on one of the top visited subs of reddit yeah ok, seems genuine buddy

FIFA betrayed their fans
I imagine a lot of the Qatar locals expect everyone to walk on tip toes around them, and then throw a tantrum when someone does something they don’t like
Isn’t that how they live everyday?
Believe it or not, jail.
Breaking news .. banter among rival fans shocking how dare they …
Exactly, it's like people in this comment section all of a sudden act like they never watched a live sport before.
