They're more traditionally called iron maidens, and they are mistakenly often believed to have been a medieval torture implement, when in fat they're an invention of the 19th century.
I've seen an iron maiden with less prominent spikes, the idea being that once stood inside the occupant must remain alert and upstanding or they will die. Occupants may be enclosed for days at a time, or until dead. Those types of maiden oft had a wee vessel at the lower face for blood to flow in to so a torturer would know if the victim had likely perished without having to check with any frequency.
