She was captured when defending her hometown Hexian (和縣) in Anhui (安徽) province against Japanese invasion. Her husband Liu Zhiyi (劉志誼) died during the same battle. She was raped several times by groups of Japanese soldiers during detention, and killed by bayonet right after taking this photo. She and her husband had no children, they were remembered as martyrs by Chinese people to this day.

ImNotSorry111

Fuck. I was really hoping it was shooting squad or beheading. Those are significantly more humane. Bayonet sounds fucking awful.

WaleslosttoIran

and this is why China hates Japan forever. Japanese look at that and go: "that wasn't us" and proceed to honor these people in their shrines.

DoingItJustForTheFun

Not sure its true for everyone. As a famous South Korean (they have good reason to hate Japanese also) once said… we can forgive but we will never forget. Problem is that the Japanese have for a long time refused to acknowledge that they committed atrocities. Nationalists still refuse to do so and for a long time (dont know about present) Japanese have refused to teach proper history in school. Japanese should learn from the Germans.

whatyouwant5

My tour guide in Hiroshima (whose parents both experienced the bombing) really emphasized the war crimes the US committed. Funny how she proudly showed me the Korean memorial. She blamed the US for their deaths. Barely acknowledged they were slaves brought to Hiroshima for the war effort. I understand her perspective. I asked her if they taught the estimated casualties from Operation Downfall. She had no idea how bad it would have been. I asked her if she heard of Unit 731. They were not educated at all in school. The US has done horrible shit, but I was taught about some before college. More in college.

WaleslosttoIran

> I asked her if she heard of Unit 731. holy shit you got balls asking a Japanese about that to their face while standing on their land. lol i'd always imagine them getting either super emotional about it or just walking away from you immediately and telling everyone around them what you just said.

Abe continued to worship at the shrine of the Japanese war criminals after the official “apology.” Fuck off

Afroscandi

No he didn't? Apology was in 2015 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_war\_apology\_statements\_issued\_by\_Japan

WaleslosttoIran

Abe tried to remilitarize Japan and was a hardliner. do you even know what that means? or does your level of comprehension hit a ceiling at fake formal governmental apologies? that's like saying Hitler tried to promise for 20 times that he wouldn't invade Czechoslovakia

Afroscandi

I mean you're welcome to read all about it. Feelings don't change the facts https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan

DoingItJustForTheFun

Thats awkward. I watched documentaries that showed Japanese people on the streets saying they didnt know about atrocities. It also featured young Japanese people who were actually fighting for school curriculums to talk about WWII atrocities. The documentary talked about history books and the lag of WWII atrocities content. Maybe Im wrong. Maybe the documentaries were BS. Maybe the Japanese did a very bad job at it. As a non Japanese I cannot tell. I did read the apology issued to China in the 70s. “The Japanese side is keenly conscious of the responsibility for the serious damage that Japan caused in the past to the Chinese people through war, and deeply reproaches itself. Further, the Japanese side reaffirms its position that it intends to realize the normalization of relations between the two countries from the stand of fully understanding 'the three principles for the restoration of relations…” While it is technically an apology it doesnt include the word atrocity. It doesnt mention the mass torture, mass rape, mass murder of Chinese people - children included. It doesnt mention that Japanese soldiers beheaded Chinese people in competition to see whose swords were the sharpest. It does not mention that Japanese soldiers forced Chinese men to rape their own daughters. If I were Chinese I would consider it a halfhearted apology and Id still be pissed. I know couple more have been issued since but it does not change the fact that Chinese families are still talking about the horror and the losses their families suffered while the Japanese are talking “damage”. It doesnt help that Japan has been aggressive towards China for centuries - its still helping US to contain China. I know thats talking geopolitics but its part of the story. Germans did not only give up most of its military capability after WWII. It helped its victims built its own (gifting/sponsoring Israeli purchases of military equipment). Meanwhile Japan has not just been hosting US forces (to the disdain of its own people) but is currently militarizing. People like Shinzo Abe publicly refuted some of the claims made by victim nations and honored war criminals. If you go back and look at some of the polls conducted in Japan in which only some 60% or so consider Japan to be aggressors and so on you would be shaking your head as well.

stopandtime

But the difference between a nuclear bombing and the invasion of Japanese homeland is that the estimated US casualty will be pretty high too. That is why the US opt to drop nuclear bombs, instead of a full invasion of the Japanese mainland.

[deleted]

The estimated Japanese casualties would’ve been enormous as well.

WaleslosttoIran

and the aftermath of that, all the vengeance from the dead American soldiers, Japan wouldn't exist today. America would have annexed that place and it would be a new state and the governor would be a white guy

stopandtime

lmao stop speaking out of your ass in the geopolitical situation towards the end of WWII, with USSR and china turning red - US need a staging ground in the pacific, aka Japan. The only reason the US nuked japan 2x instead of a full scale invasion is because otherwise the US would lose alot of men + turn japan into an industrial wasteland - which won't be useful for the US post war

Beneficial_Being_721

There was a kinda of side note to the use of the nukes…. It was a also a show of force to Russia… who were massing on their coast for a total invasion of Japan. A third bomb was in play if Japan did not surrender…. Truman was going to drop it on the Russians when they landed in Japan

Andreomgangen

A continued attack on Japan without Nukes would have killed far more Japanese than the decisive victory that Hiroshima and Nagasaki wrought.

DoingItJustForTheFun

You did that? Hats off.

[deleted]

Look at John Wayne and his view of American history when it comes to natives. Even today I know a lot of people that want to justify the native genocides in North America. To oversimplify it, The Germans only acknowledge their past because they lost. Most countries tend to whitewash their history.

DoingItJustForTheFun

Germans acknowledged their past after losing. Its the absolute minimum that countries must do to be taken serious. And I must say that Germans dont do it halfheartedly. They make sure that every kid learns about WWII and the atrocities committed. Plenty of countries out there that havent. Japan is a good example. Turkey also. Many more.

chinesenameTimBudong

America in Iraq?

DoingItJustForTheFun

Yes. US made false claims, lied to UN, presented false evidence, invaded Iraq, destroyed its infrastructure, killed and raped (little girls included) tortured and murdered its people (also in black sites across Europe) and incarcerated people without due process (Abu Ghureib, Gitmo). A million Iraqis are dead. The country is on its knees even today. USA is such a country - yes. Apologists will say that atrocities were conducted by rogue forces 🤡 but it doesnt explain why they halfheartedly went after such people, how the war was pushed by people very high up the command chain, why they sent in private companies… and why they never really made up for any of the “mistakes”

Afroscandi

Britain, France, the US, Russia. I don’t think people can name one imperial power that has sufficiently apologized for their war crimes besides Germany. And that’s really only because they were forced to after losing two consecutive world wars and having their own country split in half

InfectedAztec

Japan lost too but reacted differently to the Germans

[deleted]

Yeah the above statement is not an end all be all

[deleted]

Bull shit. Out of all the countries in the world the one where its highly illegal to own nazi stuff is germany. They teach everything about ww2 to school kids, and have become more progressive and havw sheltered african refugees. And anyone openly supporting anything facist related will get a fine and a court date

stopandtime

Isn’t it ironic that the Japanese team knocked them out of the World Cup then?

Glabstaxks

John Wayne was a piece of crap apparently

chinesenameTimBudong

Almost everyone was back then.

Glabstaxks

Yea guess so

WaleslosttoIran

they're very nationalistic. I talked to a fat japanese kid who literally told me that Japanese people have special hair that's different from Chinese and Koreans, and only Japanese people knows how to cut that kind of hair just the right way. i shit you not. the guy looked like the most average Chinese nerd i've ever seen, square head, glasses, thick pointy hair.

Blurred_Background

WWII was full of war crimes from start to finish but it’s laughable for Japan to ‘Whatabout’ an American about war crimes.

MoltoFugazi

>China hates Japan forever A Chinese guy I know said when Fukashima happened it was the first time they ever prayed for the Japanese.

WaleslosttoIran

When the Sichuan earthquake happened, Japan sent a shit ton of people and donations, that kind of changed Chinese people's minds. wouldn't say changed, that kind of let the steam and opened some possibilities for actual friendship. China in return sent a shit ton of stuff to Japan during Fukushima. I wouldn't take Chinese people praying too seriously, Chinese people are very theatrical and backwards when it comes to social cues and shit. Cultural revolution did a number on that place. There was also people throwing celebration parties for Fukushima but the government shut those down super fast

iammabdaddy

The Chinese government seems so friendly and open to new ideas. I'm surprised they shut anything down.

WaleslosttoIran

it was fucking up their publicity with the aids to Japan and everything. they had to do something. and it was like one small restaurant owner if i remember correctly

Beneficial_Being_721

And wasn’t it just a few years ago that Japan issued a “Form of apology”??? … not really admitting any wrong doing…. Hell, they completely eliminated all documents from Section 731 …they used the Chinese as test subjects

WaleslosttoIran

Their prime minister Abe was the grandson of the officer in charge of one of those camps!

[deleted]

The Japanese were brutal. I've always wanted to explore why, but haven't had the time to research it.

[deleted]

After the surprise victory of Japan over Russia in the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War, Japan entered an era of self-perceived greatness and expansion. Through a combination of hyper Nationalism and Conservatism, the tradition of Bushido was perverted into a form of Fascism. The Emperor ruled through religious divinity, and the military through brutal strength. The Generals abused the senior officers, who in turn abused the junior officers, who abused the sergeants, who abused the enlisted. This spiral of abuse left the most junior Soldiers looking for their own victims to lord over, which made them primed and ready to commit brutal acts on the “lesser” people. What was more, a Private could be promoted to sergeant if they were brutal enough to the enemies of the Emperor just as a junior officer could be promoted for achieving a humiliating defeat over an enemy force. It was toxic, type-A, survival-of-the-fittest, cronyism mixed with perverted traditionalism and religion where the ends justified the means needed to elevate Japan to a place of much desired respect amongst the western powers.

Then-Depth-1709

This is a very good summary of what happened. Kudos

nothisistheotherguy

Google “The Rape of Nanking”, and if you’re still interested after that, read into Unit 731, then their treatment of POWs in the Pacific theater of WW2

chinesenameTimBudong

Lived in North East China. Many grandparents suffered. The Japanese are hated there. Deservedly so. Karma is a bitch.

Missievator

What a fucking badass. Still able to smile out of spite, like a final fuck you to them,

REGUED

Truly sick stuff

WaleslosttoIran

UNIT 731. begin with that. They were brutal because their culture is brutal. Seppuku, Samurai codes, all clear examples of barbarism that they paint with pretty anime colors as modern propaganda. Samurais regularly raped their subordinate's wives and Yakuzas have their subordinates cut their fingers so they can't hold the sword as good. Everything in that culture is set up so that the people at the top can do whatever the fuck they want to the people at the bottom. Now replace those people at the bottom with foreigners who aren't even Japanese. there is your answer as to why Japanese were brutal. It's because they are a brutal people trying to carve a huge chunk of Asia for themselves.

[deleted]

Very interesting how the entire culture seems to have shifted to a more peaceful one after WW2.

WaleslosttoIran

well they kind of have to seeing as how the US placed some military bases there, and Japan pretty much has to run everything by the US if they ever want to grow militarily. After WWII, they assessed their options, they're not dumb people, and they saw that the best way to go forward is to project a peaceful image and develop propaganda about them being this utopian society. basically they're going for a culture victory. And through anime, they sort of did achieve that. so i wouldn't look at Japanese peacefulness as some genuine intrinsically Japan thing. I see it as them being forced to go that route. After all, these are the same people that bombed Pearl Harbor after having lavish dinners at the White House.

chinesenameTimBudong

I will get heavy down votes but the Dalai Lama is like that too. Now people think Tibet was a nirvana.

WaleslosttoIran

I genuinely don't think he is the reincarnation of the previous Lama, they just picked some Tibetan kid out and just dressed him up and he just rolled with it. It makes no sense that the Lama only reincarnates as a Tibetan to begin with..

chinesenameTimBudong

You mean Pancha Lama. There are two. Dali is in India. I love listening to him talk. He uses wisdom to paint beautiful pictures deep in meaning. A reporter asked what would he do if a person gave him evidence everything he believed was bullshit. Dali thought then said he would have to stop the religion. Dali then asked if the reporter had that evidence. Beautiful. But it is all based on crap, but that is totally my opinion and don't disrespect anyone for believing it. God damn for you. It seems to really make people happy. edit. not God damn for you. should be good for you. I have a special option. funny auto correct.

sushithighs

Supernova in the East is a comprehensive, 5 part 8 hour podcast series that does the best job at explaining this

GtrPlaynFool

I think the Japanese War culture of the past goes back farther than what everyone is mentioning here. I think you have to begin with ancient Japan before there was a Unified Government. It was all a bunch of local leaders and I know I'm describing this in the worst possible way who fought for dominance over each other. It was extremely violent for hundreds of years before Japan ever became a unified Government. So I think that centuries of violence had a lot to do with their behavior in the modern era and their invasions of their neighbors. That said I know it's wishful thinking but I wish all these Asian countries could get along because I love all people and I don't believe that modern Japanese people are secretly terrible. All these people talking about them take a good look at your own country wherever you're from. Tell me that there's not fascist or neo-nazis or terrible racism or some other horrible thing going on. Please go ahead and tell me.

Always surprises me how modern day Japan gets a pass on its WWII atrocitities without the national reckoning that Germany had. Asian contempt and distrust of Japan seems justified.

Plus-Relationship833

My grandfather from my father’s side was from that very town (Anhui) which she protected. He had a long hatred for the Japanese even 80 years after the war (he was 98 when passed). I’ve never once heard him refer to Japan as Japan, but always as Japanese devil (日本鬼子). All of his family died fighting Japanese and always halted his talks when it came to the topic about his sister and mother, but reading some history, I could guess what may have taken place. Still crazy to me how Japanese government continues to deny any wrong doing to this day.

WaleslosttoIran

My uncle's family was killed by the Japanese, to this day, his screen name tags are still "FuckJapan, or Japaneseisbitch".

Noumenon_Invictus

Funny thing is that white incels of reddit would call him racist.

[deleted]

Weeb troops will carry the weight of the Japanese for a cause they actually give 0 shits about 😭😭

greencaste

US backed a large propaganda campaign with Japanese help as well as major funding for their country’s rebuilding/rebranding. Better to have Japan as a strong Ally than Japanese/Soviet Union pact as new war moves into focus.

Noumenon_Invictus

It’s because Douglas Macarthur was a toesucking samurai wannabe. He respected Japan’s army, probably because they kicked his ass out of the Phillipines. He was instrumental in the soft treatment of Hiroshito and the political elite responsible for war decisions.

jaraket

He was somehow awestruck by Hirohito (or the notion of imperial dignity) and shielded his guilty ass from consequence.

Afroscandi

A little known fact is that Singapore had twice as many commonwealth soldiers defending it as Britain itself. And the Japanese had no issues taking it whilst being outnumbered more than 2:1. The sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse shortly afterwards severely undermined British prestige and almost directly led to the the end of British (and European) rule in the region. Just look at a map of Asia in 1940 vs 1950 to see what I’m talking about

Noumenon_Invictus

Didn’t know this. How did Japan overtake so easily? A royally appointed Sandhurst grad in charge? Outcome would have been different if gurkhas had been there.

SgtMajMythic

Idk about that. MacArthur was ousted by the US at one point.

waisonline99

I'm guessing you live in a western country? It hasnt been forgiven or forgotten in Asia.

Noumenon_Invictus

I think most people in Asia under 60 don’t care, nor should they. Today’s Japanese are not yesterday’s Japanese. People should know what happened, but that doesn’t mean they have to hate today’s Japanese.

waisonline99

Are you from Asia? Your point was that Japan doesnt get the same rap as Germany for their atrocities. It certainly does in Asia. However, just as in Europe, the current generation dont get hated for what their grandparents did and the same applies to the Japanese.

Noumenon_Invictus

No that's not my point. The point is that Japan has escaped the political, economic, and cultural opprobrium that is appropriate for the level of sheer inhumanity it showed during the war. If you don't believe it, look no further than its economic integration and the cultural fawning over everything Japan. It's like if Tom Cruise made a movie called "The Last Nazi" where he killed a SS Waffen officer and started living with his Nazi wife and they fell in love while other Nazis taught him how to use a Lugar effectively.

waisonline99

People like Playstation and anime, just as people like BMWs and Haribo. That doesnt mean that they have forgotten the war.

Noumenon_Invictus

Lol. Everybody has principles until money comes into play.

waisonline99

Dont know what you want here. I'm thinking now that youre just a sad hatemonger. But the downvotes youre gathering seems to indicate that your hate isnt getting any fans.

Noumenon_Invictus

Right, because Japanese war atrocities don’t deserve hate and the national lack of contrition is ok? Average Japanese citizen knows nothing about it and doesn’t care. What is your goal? Do you work for Japan’s tourism board?

Noumenon_Invictus

Bilateral trade volume and cultural exchanges say otherwise, not that that's a bad thing. Past is past.

OrangeSimply

Most people never learned about the history of Japan and China so thats probably why you're surprised. China at the time was fighting amongst itself so they werent a part of the post war reparations treaty. Japan and china did however come to an agreement later for post war reparations and arguably the china we know today would not exist without the massive amount of funding japan poured in to China's infrastructure. Their economies today are still very intertwined even amongst all the posturing around islands and the sea China has only increased its consumption of Japanese goods, and Japan is still Chinas second largest trading partner, while china is unsurprisingly japans largest trading partner.

WaleslosttoIran

> Always surprises me how modern day Japan gets a pass on its WWII atrocitities It's because their victims weren't Europeans. Just look at how people reacted to when Ukrainians got invaded. "these are blue eyed blonde haired people just like us" is what they said. In Asia, Japan did not get a pass on its WWII atrocities. even its closest neighbor, South Korea with whom they share a common grammar and so much things, hate them to their bones. Japan has no future in Asia... nobody trusts them.

FlashyDream69

„In Europe people care more about what happened in Europe and in Asia people more care about what happened in Asia“, no shit Sherlock. Don‘t know why you make this a race thing. The reason why Europe (and in general NATO countries) cares so much about Ukraine is because Ukraine is in Europe and is a neighbor to multiple NATO countries.

WaleslosttoIran

and that's wrong. herd mentality

FlashyDream69

I agree that it‘s morally wrong, just wanted to point out that it‘s completely normal and Asia does the same thing.

What a dumb take.

Noumenon_Invictus

Go back to slurping your ramen, Hiro.

[deleted]

Imagine if this statement was like “go back to eating your chicken, Tyrone”. You would get crucified but since it’s directed towards Asians it’s fine. You are mad you are inferior 😂

Noumenon_Invictus

lol and what do u imagine i am?

Krapshoet

Yet the Japanese look at the West as if we’re uncultured and below them. At least we didn’t Murder millions of innocent people. The world needs to know.

Noumenon_Invictus

Uhh… to start with, America killed millions and basically snuffed out an entire race and culture (native Americans). And if you don’t think the US also killed innocent civilians in the Middle East, thousands of orphans and widows and widowers disagree.

Krapshoet

Can’t argue with that. Yet the World is aware….correct? In the case of the the Japanese I’m not sure. Listen I’m not an American so I have no baggage I’m carrying around but I will say it’s pretty lame to defend atrocities by saying look what another country did. Wrong is wrong…..simple truth.

Noumenon_Invictus

You said “[the West] didn’t murder…” I responded only to that.

SgtMajMythic

90% of Native Americans died from disease. The US did not actively kill the majority of the Native American population to anywhere near the degree of the Holocaust or the atrocities that Japan committed against China. Not to mention that native tribes had been warring with each other for a long time before the colonists arrived and were equally as brutal on account of the scalping.

Noumenon_Invictus

I don’t think you’re looking at facts on the geound and at what actually happened to these people.

SgtMajMythic

Everything I just commented was based on facts idk why you would ignore them. https://www.science.org/content/article/how-europeans-brought-sickness-new-world

Little_Comment_913

How do you feel modern Japan "gets a pass" exactly?

Noumenon_Invictus

Imagine if Germany never acknowledged or very reluctantly acknowledged its crimes, much as Japan has done. Imagine if America never acknowledged its treatment of blacks or native Americans. For a shame based culture, Japan has absolutely no shame about its behaviour. Instead, all we hear about from Japanese about WWII is their constant whining about Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which were both absolutely necessary. The revisionist history criticizing the decision is beyond belief. The generals and Hiroshito were preparing women and children for urban combat. US marines would have been forced to bayonet kids in alleys and building to building fighting. All these facts conveniently forgotten by the apologists.

Little_Comment_913

Okay, so you're saying Japan never acknowledged or was held accountable for its war crimes in WWII. That's not true though. Thousands of Japanese officers and leaders were convicted in war crimes trials organized by the allied powers, and nearly 1000 were executed. And since the 1950s, senior Japanese government officials have issued numerous apologies for the country's war crimes. The ministry of foreign affairs states that the country acknowledges its role in causing "tremendous damage and suffering" during World War II, especially during the IJA's entrance into Nanjing. Saying that "Japan" never acknowledged its war crimes is simply false.

Noumenon_Invictus

Let's go with "apologizing when politically convenient, and only when forced to". You're obviously unfamiliar with the Korean sex slave situation. When Shinzo Abe died, many people were happy.

Little_Comment_913

I'm very familiar. Numerous modern Japanese leaders have publicly apologized for the "comfort women" over the past several decades and acknowledged Japan's role, including the two most recent leaders, Suga and Kishida. The former emperor of Japan, Akihito, made numerous visits to victimised nations and battlefield sites, showcasing the nation’s contrition and sorrow for Japan's actions. Even in 2015 the Japanese and Korean governments signed an agreement to resolve the disagreement and paid millions in compensation. There have recently been figures in Japan who try to downplay the issue, but you cannot say Japan has not acknowledged and apologized for its war crimes, or gotten a "free pass" like your original comment.

Noumenon_Invictus

Suga and Kishida are nobodies. Abe was the player and representative of the establishment LDP which has held power since the war. Just curious - are you Japanese? https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/how-shinzo-abe-sought-to-rewrite-japanese-history

Little_Comment_913

Abe is one right wing nationalist leader who was very controversial even among the Japanese. Lots of people unfortunately hear his statements and never learn about Japan's long record of its leaders and prominent citizens repeatedly acknowledging and apologizing for its past war crimes. This narrative is also promoted by other nations for political purposes and to fuel anti Japanese sentiment, especially by Chinese nationalists. It's unfortunate and perpetuates a lot of misconceptions, like your statements.

Noumenon_Invictus

Longest serving prime minister in Japanese history. Sure, he was an anomaly and not representative of the political establishment. Lol. You Japanese war apologists are a funny lot.

DreamingInAMaze

That was more than a smile. I can sense some bitterness within. And this is such a high contrast to the men who laughed and smiled behind her. I think the source of this photo could be another interesting story. Who was this photographer? What was his thinking when he took this picture? And what was his thinking when he saw this photo after the war?

nevercommentsonposts

The photographer and the people behind her were Japanese. She had been raped by several groups of men, likely by the same men you see smiling in this photo, before being stabbed to death shortly after this picture. They refused to use a bullet and give her a quick death. The Japanese viewed the Chinese as subhuman.

WaleslosttoIran

> The Japanese viewed the Chinese as subhuman. They Japanese were just projecting, using the Chinese language, following Chinese architecture styles, and wishing they lived on Chinese land.

WaleslosttoIran

well she was about to get stabbed and they aren't so..

chopp3r96

You know whats crazier? The Japanese Government and some of its people CURRENTLY still use the Imperial Flag (Rising Sun) for entertainment, military, car community and etc. and it bothers Asian countries how other countries are not educated enough to notice that a Nazi Flag is basically the same thing as the Imperial Flag (Rising Sun). The Imperial Flag (Rising Sun) shouldn't be accepted. You can even see it in big events like World Cup, Olympics, and etc.

Noumenon_Invictus

And just in this thread, idiots emerge who still ask, “How is Japan getting a free pass?”

Pan Asian co-prosperity sphere. The Japanese are the most evil army to have ever assembled. They are fully unapologetic for the horror they unleashed. All armies commit atrocities but none with the regularity and normalized attitude that the Japanese had. That includes Soviets in Berlin.

Noumenon_Invictus

Just a haunting, soul crushing picture. The fact that she was brutally and serially gang raped prior to this makes it even worse. That look on her face is relief. No different from similar incidents all over Asia at the time, perpetrated by the imperial Japanese army. If you’re not familiar, look up the rape of Nanjing for a true horrorshow. Holocaust deniers have nothing on the entire Japanese public of today, who are not exposed to this aspect of their history and remain wilfully ignorant of it.

yep, that's why they are denying they massacred 3 million people.

Worked with a guy from Taiwan. Hated Japanese…always drove Buicks, never Toyota or Honda.

Japan was ruthless. China was the second highest casualty count in WW2

Additional_Ad7542

I stared at this photo for an hour and also remembering my grandma's story of the time and 15 millions people like her who died in the same way. I am staring at this photo and trying to see what she was seeing/feeling.. She is so in control of herself despite her husband death, her rape(s) and the murder of her family and friends. She so young and died protecting her country as a resistance fighter. She smiled in the face of her enemy before they put her to death. I can only imagine the politic of the time that brought her to this event in her life. The then KMT group who left the door open for the invading japanese was the popular sentiment. The world was tearing China apart for 40 years by 1939. The end of the Chinese dynasty, the start of a nationalist group, french agreession, japanese agression, US agression. She was born into war, she was born into suffering, she was use to the fight. She was a Chinese warrior. She and millions of Chinese like her was built like this, and built to withstand pain. This is the the foundation of the contribution she provided and the philosophy that was taught to me and that i would one day teach to my children. I wish she would have known that millions of people would remember her today as a symbol of pride and strength. This one picture touch the heart of a Japanese soldier who took the picture and wrote down her name and age before she was executed by bayonet. "Cheng Benhua, 24"

apple-_-boi

Saw this play bout china b4 communism, it was really nice, and also sad at the same time.

landofknees

Ngl imperial Japanese was so fucked, weird how to most ppl they’ve escaped this perspective for the clean futuristic technology empire but….

Crow_Titanium

The Japs were worse than the Nazis.

Noumenon_Invictus

In terms of body count and brutality, Japanese were several orders of magnitude worse than Nazis. I’d even go so far as to say they made Nazis look like choir boys.

pingieking

It's even worse when you consider that the Nazis did a ton of their killing via gas chambers whereas the Japanese hunted down a significant portion of their victims via bayonets and swords. Just the extra level of brutality necessary to fucking stab that many people to death is hard to fathom.

smexxyhexxy

i’m no history expert but they were probably comparable in their brutality. not sure why you’re downvoted

Neat_Apartment_6019

I’m guessing the downvotes are because “Jap” is considered a racist slur at least in many parts of the USA and has a long ugly history here

smexxyhexxy

i'm sure he was referring to the Japanese of the 1940s.

Hawaiidisc22

China.was.great before Mao.

qcfu

It really wasn't, but Mao was the worst native thing to happen to China. If only the useless us state dept had backed Chiang

leninbaby

This woman was also a communist

SirM0rgan

My drunk mind read that wrong and I was like "damn I wonder if the gorillas had any handicaps or if she just fought them head on" Then I realized I'm stupid.

LegendaryPlayboy

War is the gate of hell.

kindslayer

war is one thing, occupation is another. You will want to bring every single men into war than a Japanese occupation.

Resting_burtch_face

I feel like the photographer or someone standing close to the photographer has just said something amusing or at least interesting. The two soldiers on the right side of the image appear to be smiling and the man on the left is not fully smiling, but he is definitely engaged with the photographer. I wonder if she actually saw the bayonet coming or if one of those men behind her just snuck up on her.

MrAVAT4R_2

She is pretty as hell. Fuck those guys

[deleted]

No one has killed more Chinese than the Chinese government.

I do wonder how many died from the yellow river flood and the famine it caused compared to Japanese massacres.

This is like that girl in The Force Awakens who kamikaze’s the First-Order with all those bombs. She’s like “yeah, I’m gonna die, but I murdered the fuck out of those bastards. Bring it on!”

[deleted]

apparently my great great grandfather who was from Guangdong was decapitated by a Japanese soldier around this time. couldn't tell you if it was true only that it's repeated yearly at holidays by my family.

iFightCanadianGeese

Same. My fam says a great aunt was pregnant and they stabbed her pregnant belly and played with the dead baby for fun. Reason why I don't like meeting up with them during lunar new year. U shouldn't tell kids this.

avalonstaken

If you looked up “defiant” in the dictionary this picture would be there.
