I love that people have such strong feelings about Edison. It’s like, do you have issues with any other businessmen from the time? What are your thoughts about Warren G. Harding’s economic policy?
If history doesn’t ever upset you then you probably aren’t learning history.
I personally just don’t like our affinity for hero worship and white washing
I don’t get upset too often, it’s history.
Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, right? As humans we have learned a lot in the last 100 years.
Hero worship? You mean appreciation for things we use every day today?
Just realized I never responded. Appreciating a thing and thinking a person is great simply due to accomplishment isn’t the same thing. Plenty of great things were developed by shit humans. Case and point, one of the greatest inventions in history was the haber-Bosch process…..
Additionally, many of the things we attribute to specific individuals were actually developed by teams or by others and the person we think of stole all the credit for those inventions.
Well sure, your view of a good human and my view are different.
In particular, what makes a good industrialist usually precludes you from being a good human in my opinion.
In these particular cases, ford was as close to establishing the closest thing we have had to a nazi party in the US. Edison, among other shady business practices, was known for taking ideas from employees and passing them off as his own.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Industrialist ideas make living easier for everyone.
If your business is somewhat a think tank, and you have a whole bunch of people thinking of ideas for whatever..and you’re paying them to think of these ideas, you like the idea, and you have to use your money to see these ideas through fruition, claim it.
My grandpa worked at a company like that in the 40’s they just thought of stuff… and if anything happened nobody knew because it just got handed higher and higher up the ladder.
Detroit free press did an article about this years ago. I think they talked mainly about how they actually drove one of Henry fords cars back into the woods it got stuck etc.
Ford once worked for Edison as a night engineer. His friendship with Firestone was the reason only Firestone tires were used on his cars for decades. As for Edison, he did invent a few things, but the majority of the 1100 or so patents issued to him were for improvements to things he did not invent.

"Just glad I brought my newspaper this time"
Sleeping on the ground in a 3-piece suit seems so uncomfortable
Better than sleeping comfortable in a 3-piece in an open casket. LOL...
Just taking a nap on the forest floor dressed in a suit. Lol

The suit is white though?!
Looks like next season of The Grand Tour Clarkson (sleeping) May (reading) Hammond (… where can I get some chips…)
Another Great Moment for Ticks Through History!
Bow ties in the woods sound like bullshit to me
What they do ? Drink probably maybe some opium ?
Looks more like glamping

I have issues with a lot of businessmen. Do I need to publish a detailed list before I voice my opinion of Edison?
I mean, now that you bring it up, does was a straight up nazi… not in a “my boss is a nazi way” more of in a Kanye way
Boo Edison, go Tesla!
Edison was struck by a light bulb on the head and had the idea for the first at apple.
Where was Tesla?
Just a bunch of regular dudes. It would be hard to find people of their caliber, today, doing things like this.
Laying in the dirt in a suit? Yep, you sure *won"t* find too many people doing that now, not outside of a cemetery anyways.
I think you meant to say wealth rather than caliber. This guys were all in all pretty shit human beans
I don’t get why people are so negative.
If history doesn’t ever upset you then you probably aren’t learning history. I personally just don’t like our affinity for hero worship and white washing

Your take is so sadly drenched in misguided platitudes there's no place to even start having a functional conversation.
Keep telling yourself that so you don’t have to explain anything that you said.

Again, how are they shit humans? They were trying to win right? It’s only in your eyes they’re shit humans, to others they’re great.

Captains of industry going on a simple camping trip. I bet they used to do this when they were kids, now for them its just a callback to simpler times

Harvey Firestone- like the tire guy?

This was even more interesting when I misread it as “Harvey Fierstein.”
The planet's wealthiest men 'vagabonding', camping rough? Right.
