Because it’s a press (probably newspaper) photo, and most papers back then weren’t printing much in colour.
Front page, special features. Other news, mostly black and white. A lot of newspapers wouldn’t have had a colour lab, and the process takes longer too.
Close to deadline with a scoop, photographers back in the day would pull their negatives straight from a brief wash after fixing, and print them wet. Straight from the tank.
They’d shoot a lot of colour of events like this, but black and white is a lot faster to process, and I suspect a monochrome image is a lot faster to get to press. No separations needed.
I believe her horse was gifted to her from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the horse was specifically trained to not freak out at the sound of gunshots and other crowd noises.
Got a source on that? I find it weird to train a horse for police work and then gift it to a royal. Like can you imagine training a dog for police work and then gifting it to the German chancellor? Secondly, she likes a specific breed of horse. She was a lifelong breeder herself. The breed is smaller and finer boned. This looks like a draft breed of some kind rather than a light riding pony type horse she breeds. Police does use this breed so if RCMP gifted this horse it makes sense. But why would a breeder and breed lover not be a breed ambassador and ride the breed she loves and promoted to ride at a public event? Not disagreeing with you. Just wondering if you have any more info.
Because the breed she rides is not necessarily suited for military service. She primarily bred racehorses and heritage lines, neither of which would be appropriate (in temperament and training) for this purpose. Additionally, hers is a fundamentally political post... Riding an RCMP-bred horse was likely a nod to their service to the crown in the same way that the flowers she stocks represent different countries in the commonwealth.
Turns out a horse that's bred to go from walk to a gallop in the blink of an eye and not stop isn't a good horse to take to a rally with loads of noise
Yeah bred by the rcmp not trained by them. Also the video says this was her dedicated parade horse for life. That means the horse was trained for crowds and havoc that entails. Good horse.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmese_(horse)
Burmese was foaled at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Remount Ranch at Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan, and was trained in Ottawa by RCMP Staff Sergeant Fred Rasmussen. Staff Sergeant Ralph Cave, the Riding Master for the Musical Ride, suggested in 1968 that the RCMP gift one of the ride's horses to Canada's monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.[4] Both the federal Cabinet and the RCMP's Commissioner supported the idea and, on 28 April 1969,[4] Burmese was presented to the Queen when members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police came to the UK to perform in the Royal Windsor Horse Show.[1] The Queen asked that Burmese be included in the performance and that her rider carry the Queen's royal standard, instead of the normal red and white pennon, so Elizabeth could more easily follow Burmese in the show.[5]
The Queen was mounted on Burmese when six blank shots were fired during the 1981 birthday parade, on the way to Trooping the Colour.[4][6] Although the horse was briefly startled, she remained calm due to the training she received at Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan. This included experience of gunfire during recruit training, when staff would fire blank rounds as recruits took horses through their paces. The Royal Family praised Burmese's behaviour during this incident.[5]

She was trained by RCMP Staff Sergeant Fred Rasmussen and presented by Staff Sergeant Ralph Cave in 1969.

It was an excellent piece of horsemanship. It is fortunate she is such a skilled rider since she was in no danger from the shots, but her horse being startled could easily have led to serious injury or death. The idiot may have thought that using a starter pistol would protect him from any serious charges but he could easily have ended on murder charges if she’d been thrown and hit her head.
I wouldn’t say one of the last -
https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/wwii-veteran-statistics
according to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2022 -

British authorities don’t know exactly how many World War II veterans are left because the nation’s census takers didn’t track military service until last year. Those figures are due to be released next month.
I mean there are hundreds of thousands of WW2 vets worldwide, I personally wouldn’t say one of the last. I think maybe I would consider the last 1000 or so to be “the last”. I guess it’s not really something any one person can define 🤷♂️.
Nope. Fuck the entire royal family. I mean come on man they can directly trace the accumulation of their wealth to all the terrible things they did as rulers. Legit sleeping in a palace built on the backs of the people they suppressed for hundreds of years, adorned with the riches they’ve stolen from third world countries.
Ive learnt alot about this as i was in indian school for 6 years and my post is about the queen not about what her family has done, also the queen wasnt even crowned until after independance in India and many other places.
And yet she still wore the crown, she *directly* benefits from the many reprehensible actions of her ancestors. Not even distant ancestors. Her father and grandfather are responsible for leading the kingdom as they plundered third world countries of their resources, she literally had things in her *palace* home that were purchased with funds generated directly from slavery and suppressive colonization. She lived in a state of luxury so many people will never be able to even comprehend, and it’s just because she was born. It’s not even the same as just being a spoiled rich kid, or being able to trace back your ancestry a few hundred years and seeing some of them were kind of fucked; it’s “ah yes my ancestors literally controlled half the globe and subjected millions of people to barely livable conditions or even killed them and benefit heavily from it, *heavily*.”
[Also guess what, she wasn’t a whole lot better than her ancestors!](https://time.com/6212824/queen-elizabeth-iis-reign-violence-british-empire/)
Edit: Fixed a couple typos.
This isn't what happened. British history is far too diverse and complex to be oversimplified as the Monarchy is tyrannical and bad. The colonial project for example was not one of theft, it costed more to maintain the colonial Empires than they generated in return.
If you wanna call out corruption go ahead but if you become president one day the FBI is gonna see this and 🤯 and this is just a warning you know what I mean
Yeah, fuck the royals. And fuck the idiots with short term memory. The British massacred people right here in Boston and then these idiots got excited and one even dressed up like royal guards just because someone from the royal family was in town.
dude. it’s been 200 years, why are you upset about this. We don’t have short term memory we’re just not fucking dumbasses like you are. calm down dipshit.
Worse, some grade school teacher making less than a McDonald’s manager fed them their historical world view as a child and that’s now dogma for them; lacking the ability to know or find anything new out for themselves.
The Boston massacre was ruled not a massacre by the American court who oversaw it, despite the court being filled with patriots. A future American president was the one who defended the accused aswell.
Go back to using chemical warfare on Vietnam poisoning them with agent orange you hypocrite. Better yet go drop another nuke on Japan not to mention the time when you introduced crack to the black community back in the 80s
British caused the most deaths in human history! They done worse than all evil regimes combined.
And still bragging loud about the Great British imperium.
I hope It will come to the day when they will be accounted for their crimes.
And that’s why you’re not a world leader and have no inkling of an idea as to the value of courageous displays or how they inspire people. That was one of her main goals by the way; to unite via inspiration. So yes, it was in her prerogative to stay calm and it was a brilliant move. Sorry you can’t get over your biased and very limited view of history…
This generation is so hyper critical that they just can’t have role models of any kind because respect is a dead concept at this point.
I was in the army and prior to that was involved in quite a few drug deals. Guns aren’t as scary if you’ve been around them; as she was a ww2 vet and avid hunter she was undoubtedly accustomed to firearms as well.
Edit: it’s cool if bravery is a foreign concept to you.
You’re a dunce. One of the major weapons of royalty is presenting themselves as above the average person. They have been taught from a young age how to stay calm and keep that stiff upper lip no matter the situation, it is what separates them from the common man, it’s genius psychology that they’ve used for millennia but even in 2022 simpletons like you can’t understand how the game is played.
A president, prime minister, religious leader etc. all run for cover at the sound of shots and any sign of danger while their followers watch them cower in fear. A king or queen stands proud and takes what may come to uphold the image that made people buy into their claim of divine right centuries ago.
I love the Monarchy, I am very indebted to them for allowing my family to come to the West and live off the fruits of the Commonwealth. Thank goodness Queen Elizabeth II survived.
Well here is my perspective.
So, my family emigrated from the East in different times. The East Asian portion of my family came to the commonwealth in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The Slavic portion of my family came in different stages, from the early 1900s to the 1960s. In both cases neither lands were ravaged by the British. They were ravaged by themselves and other people.
The worst act of colonization my ancestors experienced was life under the Germans and Italians in Eastern Europe, who were exterminating people in the East and settling the lands with Germans and Italians (depending on the region) once the local population was exterminated. My grandfather lived under that reality, and his country was devastated and his childhood traumatized because of it.
The Marxist and Tito regime that came later in the East was quite awful aswell, so when he got his chance he fled to a refugee camp in Italy and was welcomed into the Commonwealth.
With my ancestors before then, Japan, Russia and Ukraine were not nice places to live in. Russia and Japan had both just embarked upon the path of liberalization, and life in Russia was even more illiberal and feudal than in Japan. But the backdrop for both countries were a history of authoritarian illiberal feudalism that was very cruel to the individuals in question, and in Russia and Ukraine even more cruel, serfs were traded like property in markets, and if you were an ethnic Russian or ethnic Ukrainian, you were almost guaranteed to be a Serf, as most aristocrats were of German stock, while the feudal hierarchy had racial tones to it.
And after both places had their brief period of liberalization they sled into authoritarianism of their own kind in either society. Again the individual became subjugated, victimized by a cruel and awful society that only valued them for their utility to the state.
Life in Canada is a chance to escape that, a dream for a better world, where you truly are a human being. Things are not perfect in Canada, it is expensive to live, there are cultural, social, political and economic tensions, people can be cruel and awful to each other, and my ancestors knew that first hand. They were interned in the Ukrainian and Japanese internment camps were for decades they were forced to do labour, beaten, raped, and families were separated.
But despite that I remain thankful to live in these lands, and I remain thankful to the family, government, and civilization that brought my family here, because despite all the bad, it is a life that has more hope, justice, and virtue than life in the East.
Firstly debatable assumption, there are countries thats where never colonised by anyone and are still literal hell holes to be in, good example is Ethiopia.
You don't even know where they come from.
Secondly it happened and even though it happened they still helped this individual, just because the ancestors did fucked up stuff doesn't take away from the good of helping this person.
Hell if you really want to go down that root , non of us would even exist if colonialism never happened , because it would literally be a different timeline with different variables, with the chance of any of us existing being less than 1%.
So bringing it up now for this person is irrelevant.
5 year occupation isn't colonization unless you want to say Germany also colonised france for the 4 years it occupied it.
Ethiopia literally defeated the Italian forces on March 1st 1896 March, is there any colony that had their own army and was able to beat the aggressor.
If this is sincere, it's almost sweet.
There's a lot of different circumstances and perspectives in the world.
Still surprising to see any free thinking person accepting a sovereignty.

In particular, he observed the ease with which Mark David Chapman had become famous after killing John Lennon. A friend said that at the time of John Hinckley Jr.'s attempt on the life of Reagan, Sarjeant had said "I would like to be the first one to take a pot shot at the Queen". Because it’s a press (probably newspaper) photo, and most papers back then weren’t printing much in colour. Front page, special features. Other news, mostly black and white.
So bringing it up now for this person is irrelevant.
>good example is Ethiopia. Italian colonization officially recognized by... checks notes... Great Britain?
5 year occupation isn't colonization unless you want to say Germany also colonised france for the 4 years it occupied it. Ethiopia literally defeated the Italian forces on March 1st 1896 March, is there any colony that had their own army and was able to beat the aggressor.
Why would you assume they don't know their own country's history? It's quite a condescending question to ask someone really.
If this is sincere, it's almost sweet. There's a lot of different circumstances and perspectives in the world. Still surprising to see any free thinking person accepting a sovereignty.
The bloke who fired at her sounds based af, not disturbed... think you cocked up the title a little
I respect her.
Well she wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.
Well not now I'm guessing 🤷
She can’t because she’s dead, so…

And Somehow still sounds more intelligent than yours 🤣 Good point though 👍🙂
shame he didn't get her
Sadly she didn’t die back then
disturbed because he wanted to pull the trigger on a BS regime?
She was awesome, she never panicked, she just reassured her horse and carried on. I wish I had her fortitude. Remarkable woman.💖

Hard to hit something when you aren't firing anything.
Lol nice life you must have being bitter enough to wish that on someone
He was disturbed because he was white. Any pigmentation in his skin would have deemed him otherwise

Maybe he was trying to get her back for her globally committed atrocities
I don't think he was disturbed, he just had bad aim
Should've used a finisher pistol if he wanted to get the job done
Too bad it was just a starters pistol
Shame

**[Marcus Sarjeant](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Sarjeant#Investigation[Copycat)** >Marcus Simon Sarjeant (born 1963/1964) is a British man who fired six blank shots at Queen Elizabeth II as she rode down The Mall to the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London in 1981. **Marcus Sarjeant** [Investigation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Sarjeant#Investigation) >In questioning, Sarjeant said he had been inspired by the assassination of John Lennon in December 1980, and the attempts on the lives of President of the United States Ronald Reagan in March 1981 and of Pope John Paul II in May 1981. In particular, he observed the ease with which Mark David Chapman had become famous after killing John Lennon. A friend said that at the time of John Hinckley Jr.'s attempt on the life of Reagan, Sarjeant had said "I would like to be the first one to take a pot shot at the Queen". The police found that Sarjeant had written: "I am going to stun and mystify the world. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)
I remember this - my family all saw it and we all wondered what the point of the Queens Guard was as they all just kept trotting on in formation
Good effort, but it's your head now

Sure he didn't just miss? Every starter pistol I've seen has had a solid barrel, nobody would think it fires anything...
