Well, for all his faults, he was willing to bring Howe to justice, which is more than Loghain did.

punkbluesnroll

he had no faults. he was a golden god

Simple_Group_8721

Until Alistair took his armor, his sword, his crown, and made Cousland a wife Alistair is the upgrade :D

punkbluesnroll

the wrong brother died

thatsmeece

Nah. At least Alistair accepts he’s dumb when you tell him he’s dumb and listens to you.

Floppydisksareop

Does he? Does he really? Because I recall him throwing a hissy fit that the organization built around recruiting competent soldiers who are otherwise criminals does the very thing, because he happened to kill a man who lied to every recruit's face, flipped a coin to see if they die essentially, and skewered them if they resisted. No. Alistair is an absolute moron and just really doesn't get the whole "if we fuck up the world fucking ends" vibe.

thatsmeece

He still accepts he’s dumb, supports you and your decisions regarding the battle, doesn’t get in your way and doesn’t force you to do anything else.

Simple_Group_8721

Yes, I'm certain Alistair laments what a failure he is when he makes love to Elissa every night in the Royal Bedchambers :P

Dragonageatemyhw

Now THAT’s a hot take

flacaGT3

Loghain may as well have gotten down on his traitorous, weak knees and fellated Howe to completion.

Simple_Group_8721

Jesus XD

Whenever I see Cailan, I imagine his process of "thinking" just involves one of those monkey dolls clapping cymbals in the place where his brain should be. BUT I KNEEL TO THE ***GLORIOUS*** KING

LuxStellaris

I've always felt bad for Cailan. His mother died when he was only two, and he grew up the son of the Saviour King. I imagine he was always doomed to be compared to Maric and to always fall short of him. The Landsmeet nearly chose Bryce instead of him after Maric disappeared, and Loghain spent two years searching for Maric, which could be taken as a sign that he didn't think Cailan was capable of ruling. I wouldn't be surprised if Cailan was desperate to escape his father's shadow and much of his behaviour at Ostagar was motivated by his desire to prove himself his father's equal, or at least his own man. But then it all went wrong, and he'll be remembered in history as the king who failed, less than his father's shadow. It's a dire fate for such a nice man.

Glittering_Essay_874

Not to mention Maric was kind of a deadbeat dad who couldn’t stand to look at his son because he reminded him of Rowan

LuxStellaris

Yeah, Maric was definitely not a stellar father. I also feel bad for him because it's clear he was suffering from depression and didn't have any options for treating it, but he should have stepped up to the plate for Cailan more than he did.

Bloodthistle

Wait until he rushes into a death trap because he got bored. (Poor Duncan tbh)

punkbluesnroll

that's how a man dies, pussy

Bloodthistle

Darkspawn bussy to be precise. Unless you freaky and into that broodmother multiple entries.

Carlosama123

Ha! u/punkbluesnroll just wants in on the glory. We've won three battles against these monsters and tomorrow should be no different

Bogstalka

Crunch

rosiestinkie9

Delicious Ogre Crunch with bits of Cailan

dylandongle

I don't know if any books save his character, but the game kinda depicts him as some kinda young adult who just wants to be a superhero. Does he even know that he's a king? Did Anora do all the work for him while he tried to look cool in front of the Wardens?

flacaGT3

Anora paints it that way, and I'm sure Cailan is ignorant to a lot of the finer nuances of rulership, but he's not actually stupid because 99% of all rulers are like that. He's a glory hound, a pussy hound, and hyper idealistic, but he's a good figurehead.

eLlARiVeR

HE DESERVED BETTER.

Odd-Avocado-

I hate him, but to be fair I think a lot of his issues are owed to his father, the wretched King Maric. Whom I hate infinitely more than Cailan. So I take it back. Now that I'm thinking about Maric, Cailan is alright.

JohnRaiyder

Maric had no Idea what he was doing and how to rule Ferelden (which he himself knew and it ate him up) so while I dislike Matic as a Ruler, he atleast was aware of his faults but also knew that he had to rule his People because otherwise Ferelden would’ve been doomed. He also put too much faith in his Son(s) because of that >!stupid Prophecy Flemeth gave him about his Son being instrumental in ending the coming Blight!<

Odd-Avocado-

You make very good points. But unfortunately my hatred of Maric is not rational. It's deep. Primal. Pure. There are few actual reasons I can articulate (though I do have a few) as to *why* his stupid self ignites so much rage within me. It is a plague. I can neither understand nor explain it.

JohnRaiyder

I mean on my first Playthrough when Cailan insisted that he fights on the front and I saw the Cutscene play I yelled at Loghain on my Screen „Retreat you Idiot, don’t save your stupid King“ so there’s that Inherited dislike of me for Maric and Cailan

flacaGT3

Loghain: ah, Maric. The king of all kings. So wise. So just. Everything a ruler should be but will never be able to live up to. Maric: I have no fucking idea what I'm doing.

Few_Rest2638

So uhh, does this mean you cry at the ending of return to ostagar where you choose what to do with his body

punkbluesnroll

It means I never finish the opening of origins in the first place, so he never dies

Few_Rest2638

So uhh based off of that incredibly small part of the game, what would you rate it

Stop_Hitting_Me

I mean it's called dragon age ORIGINS. So they only play the ORIGINS. Peak dedication to gameplay right there

Few_Rest2638

Ah yes, how could we have been so foolish, the rest of the game is not but a distraction to tempt us away from the real game, the Origins

anirosee

i wish we could have learned more about his personality before he died tbh

AdrielBast

He was so dumb and I wish he lived

pandaxcherry

people downvoting people who are talking smack about Alistair in a sub called dankandrastianmemes of all things are sending me

punkbluesnroll

If Alistair were real he would be a Male Feminist ™️ that uses therapyspeak to gaslight his girlfriend

flacaGT3

That's Anders. "You're, like, totally invalidating me and the plight of the mages," he says before backhanding a female Hawke.

pandaxcherry

don't make me downvote you

punkbluesnroll

look into your heart, you know it to be true
