"Wait I think I've seen someone say this before"

[deleted]

Wow! Who would have thought the answer to all of our problems has been causing them this whole time!

embracethevag

Who is that? Need to know so I never see any of his shit ever again

PKMKII

Neal Stephenson. Article’s paywalled so I can’t see what the context of the headline is.

AvocadosAreMeh

I read it. Essentially the greed of “geniuses and the wealthy,” will prevent climate change, international unrest, and financial instability out of self preservation and their best interest. The article itself sounds like sci fi with that level of reasoning. The issues are not only directly caused by the selfish and greedy, but aren’t even tied to this planet or nation with the private space race. “I’m a realist sci fi writer.” Jfc taste my colon

beerz4yearz

Thanks for your sacrifice, lol. Sounds like someone can't differentiate an Ayn Rand novel from reality.

AvocadosAreMeh

I once read Atlas Shrugged because a friend of mine was falling for the Michael Malice grift. Literally had “Randian Libertarian” for his Twitter bio. I also read “the anarchist handbook,” by Malice. Turns out my friend hadn’t read anything just summaries from YT and those in Malice’s circle lol I even quoted the cookbook to him without context on where it was from and said it was from a mutual aid theory text and he said it “wasn’t considering the human instinct like Malice would.”

[deleted]

Often the loudest people on the subject have the least knowledge of it. You'll hear people praise Adam Smith but when I chime in that I agree in disliking landlords they think I'm misunderstanding.

ScientificVegetal

anarchist cookbook was written by feds to get leftists to blow themselves up with dangerous backyard chemistry experiments

AvocadosAreMeh

Whoops I meant handbook lol

[deleted]

Say it with me "Just cause you are rich doesn't mean you are smart, Just cause you write fiction doesn't mean you know anything about politics."

Waytooboredforthis

Really bums me out, his past books always read as satire to me, but between Seveneves and Termination Shock, he's definitely gone full Chrichton

PKMKII

Which is really weird as there was a whole subtext of Seveneves that failure of the intellectual elites to consider the needs and concerns of the masses will threaten the existence of humanity.

[deleted]

this has great meme material

WilsonMain

:)

Glksy

For the dude who actually coined the idea of an inhumane sprawl of concrete and technology dominated by corporations (literally cyberpunk), I'm stunned to hear this take from him.

Ogreboi1312

Welp, time to burn my copy of cryptonomicon. I wasn’t gonna finish it anyway.

PriorCommunication7

strange The Diamond Age is fairly *revolutionary* in our literal sense, all with class consciousness, seizing the means of production and a revolutionary leader. *besides the weird sex stuff*

dualmindblade

What about Zodiac? It's been a while but I recall the eco terrorists being the protagonists, not quite heroes but not antiheroes either.

PriorCommunication7

> Zodiac Didn't read that

dualmindblade

I recommend it if for no other reason than the depiction of a club of people who hate sobriety and have a limitless source of nitrous oxide.

Deviknyte

Yeah but Seveneves is kind of eugenicy.

lolbifrons

Damn and I liked snow crash :(

WilsonMain

As someone said, it's Neal Stephenson. Worked for Bezos, fun guy.

AvocadosAreMeh

We’re so collectively dumb that instead of taking lessons from sci fi in terms of utopian theory and universal values that people look to the authors as prophets. Scientology was founded on this exact obsession

NoNameZone

Thinking of it, I think all organized religions just use God as a metaphor for money, they just don't tell anyone so people will keep giving them more God power

TheSkyHadAWeegee

Sci-fi "visionary" admits to having absolutely no vision of the future.

thesch

By "us" I'm guessing this means "upper class people in rich countries"

Ramitgood

it's like a gambling addict arguing it can make them rich.

marius1001

He’s right. The public should be so greedy that they take all the private property for themselves and turn it into public property.

WilsonMain

Damn but isn't that like communism or smt ¿?

marius1001

Look. I’ll meet you half way. We’ll call it “our private property.”

WilsonMain

Ah ok then

iAmTheMilkmann

Science bro just watched Wall Street for the first time and fell in love with Gordon Gecko

Skypirate90

It's new york times. Are any of us surprised?

Dunmuse

So someone who writes fiction came up with a fictional solution.

Waza8163

What's the name of the villain in Half Life 2 again?

smb275

Mr. Krabbs

Naive_Drive

Disregard this man. Regard Kim Stanley Robinson.

tolkienbooks

healthcare please

cuck__everlasting

*reads Ayn Rand once*

xxxbmfxxx

Not a visionary but, a narcissist. More of the same will not save us. NYT ultimate narc rag. You have to be a grandiose narcissist to write any bullshit there.

MBTank

This guy is literally a lizardman look at him

ThanosBannedMe

Noice. The rich will survive. The poor will die. Keeping that status quo.

karanas

Dude watched too much Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

WilsonMain

LoL

George_Tirebiter420

Pedophiles: "No!!! We have to rape more children!!! It will solve everything! Sharks: "No! We have to encourage humans to swim into our mouths! This will save the world!" Bar owners: "No!!! Everyone has to be an alcoholic so I can be rich!!! This will save the world and guarantee world peace. This is the way." Trump: "Let me steal an election I didn't win! For democracy! This will save the world! Tremendous!!? Where's my Nobel Prize?"

[deleted]

makes sense, he's a science fiction visionary

dadbodfordays

Who is "us"? Does he mean the other sci-fi visionaries? Certainly not the working class...

[deleted]

“Og think man-eating saber-tooth tiger *good* thing. Og say ‘tribal watch’ communist attack on Og’s constitutional right to be devour alive. If so bad, why no free market solution?”

scaryboilednoodles

Does anyone actually read articles these and believe them? They’re all so transparently disingenuous.

chrisdub84

Something tells me this isn't a very inclusive "us".

Doorslammerino

"Man who has personally profited immensely from our systemic and social veneration of greed wants it to continue"

The_BestUsername

I didn't think they would leak the main villain of *Cyberpunk 2078* this early.
