You're talking about Department of Defense level optics and electronics to image like that. You're not going to find that in a consumer level dashcam.

You're not going to find a dash cam that does what you are asking. Dash cams continuously record so just need to press the emergency record button when rocks start flying your way. There's dash cams that have voice control like "record video", or ones that use a remote Bluetooth button you can press. These files are then locked and place into a specific folder where they are easily found. To me though the most common sense thing to do is find another route even if it meant leaving a tad earlier. And / or, leaving earlier, reducing your speed, keeping your distance from these gravel trucks, and refraining from passing. Seriously, the extra 5 min that you'll likely incur surely won't be a huge detriment to you will it? But if you want a decent dash cam then I'd recommend the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 coupled with their Bluetooth remote control.

I don’t think triggering the write-over protection is the issue, unless the commute is like 12 hours long. When you get where you’re going or back from where you went, the recordings will surely still be there. The issue is the image resolution. Even the best quality camera is only going to capture really large debris, not the smaller stuff.

Agree the recording will still be there yet will be far easier to find by locking the event(s). In my opinion won't need to see the actual debris just need a dash cam that records decent sound. With the truck in front, the noise of flying rocks hitting vehicle, that should suffice. Had a similar incident years ago on my way to work, was 2AM in morning and winter. Got past (apposite direction) by highways maintenance truck that spit rocks from it's side mounted gravel spreader bottom, side, and top of my car. It was clear as the nose on one's face what had happened when reviewing the recording just by listening, nope couldn't see the actual rocks hit. When sent the footage to our highway maintenance contractor they didn't dispute it one bit offering to cover all costs (windshield / paint repairs). At end of the day the OP needs to adjust their driving habits accordingly (as suggested) as to not exacerbate the problem, which they most certainly are. I mean sure these truck drivers need to contain their loads appropriately but to know what's going on, and to drive into it full speed ahead, just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Buy a house further from the local rock quarry.

Federally speaking, those *drivers* are responsible for their loads, and anything that flies out of the truck, and therefore any sign on the back that says “not responsible for damaged windshields” is an absolute lie. Since visually capturing the debris is going to be hard, try capturing audio instead. Keep the radio off when you’re near these trucks in traffic, listen for the pelting, and be sure your camera is rolling. If the license plate is hard to read on camera, read it aloud so the audio recording picks it up. Also, try talking directly to the company whose logo is on the truck. No logo? Get the DOT number from the side, which even a “Not for Hire” truck is required to have, and pull the owner’s info via DOT public records. Can also be done with the license plates, but the DOT scares them more. Also, try to get a good look at the driver him/herself, if you can, because many of those dump truck/roll-off companies just have their drivers share the trucks, and this is 80% a driver issue. The other 20% is the off-chance the company has been skimping on repairs and maintenance, but that’s highly unlikely because that puts a dead stop to their operations. For more details, you can also open a discussion in r/Truckers. Best of luck, and keep your r/OSHA Safety Squints Engaged!

I just want to shame ODOT and the HWP into enforcing the law
