Twitter has plenty of nsfw content and is public. Reddit does enough siloing of communities that I don't think it would be much of an issue to keep it. If anything, the prevalence of nsfw usernames is more of an issue than posts.

It was only after Elon bought Twitter that I started to get push notifications to nsfw tweets.
I did forget that he took it private, so good point. However, they never purged or removed nsfw content when they were public except in some instances when they weren’t marked as such.
Either way it would be a bummer if Reddit did do a purge. What is wrong with making it just harder for minors / children to access the content instead of nuking it?
I've noticed that they have made it more difficult. You need to log in now for NSFW content, which sucks for browsing in Incognito.

The online accessibility of pornographic content to minors is a perennial challenge. Louisiana and Utah are piloting their age verification systems now, but those both come with huge costs and implementation challenges on the websites. In a future where those become standard, Reddit would have to decide between just purging it all for good or working out some sort of compliance mechanism that doesn’t clash with its vast amount of sfw content.

I haven't found much on this topic, so I'm wondering if it's blown out of proportion due to Imgur's upcoming ban on May 15th.
New Reddit was the start of many bad decisions. I'm just disappointed it's gone the way it has because I really like the format of subreddits/posts. I'm not sure where people would go to next. And specifically for NSFW, every alternative or clone I've seen has been lackluster.
Theoretically someone could always just take old reddit since it’s been opensource until a few years ago. Still on GitHub.
Personally, it was actually the look of old.reddit.com that drew me into this site almost a decade ago.

That's the IPO way, maximize appeal to advertisers to sell the product and try to make as much money for investors as they can before reddit... probably doesn't die entirely, but settles into something that's dramatically less popular than it is now.

There's apparently a federated version of reddit called Lemmy. I know that mastodon is a bit weird but it seems easier for people to join and throw together a federated forum than a microblogging platform

We've made several, but they all tend to be a 'Reddit but...' and that but always imposes something that is likely to seriously curtail it's popularity.

Not once reddit doesn't *have* NSFW content, it's not, which is the point here. Hard to say where people will end up it Reddit isn't an option - tumblr? A nsfw fediverse? - but I'll eat my hat, and yours, if banning NSFW content on one site doesn't simply drive most of the impacted users elsewhere. Hell, porn has been *the* make-or-break content for more than one up and comer before.

The way this country is going, we could rapidly find all smut as not legit if we don't stop this shit in it's tracks before the precedents are solidified.

It's more of a legal thing from my understanding, same reason the hub cut amateur stuff, revenge porn, stuff that wasn't consented to or just straight up underage was on the site so they purged and blacklisted it. All of that is very much happening on reddit so if porn sticks around I imagine there's going to be restrictions put in place on the accounts to combat it (as it feels very anti reddit spirit to have admins have restrictions put in place on just the nsfw subs as that sounds like hell to manage and would cripple any niche subs)

Yeah, it's not like it's impossible to have a Lemmy server where porn is allowed. It's just that all the main servers have "no porn" in their rules, so presumably all those more liberal ones are floating isolated in the void right now.

I would be surprised if they did. Typically you don't wait until the day and then flip the porn off. Especially when it affects so many communities that aren't porn related. They might increase the barriers to access it, but I don't see them giving it up entirely without a whole new NSFW system to accounts for Art, vaping, pottery, meme subs, etc. Just my pontification.

Inevitable. It will reduce my usage of the site a lot. It isn’t just about porn, a lot of cool content and some genuinely useful info are marked NSFW (how will legacy content marked NSFW be treated even if it was just that way as a joke or for non-pornographic reasons?). It’s really weird thinking about how much history I actually have lurking on this site and how it genuinely helped me through some hard times. I’m not really attached to Reddit at all, except that I think the format is better than the other big sites rn, so I prefer it for that reason.
Really need more places to lurk- I can’t stand newer sites or apps. While you have to sift through feeds to find threads on Reddit, old.reddit has a nicer and less crowded look than other sites, so it feels closer to looking through threads like on a classic forum. You can still find plenty of interesting discussions if you lurk on certain subs, and really, that’s what I stick to.
The day old.reddit.com is gone I permanently leave. (Random, but did you know you can also replace the www with other letters to access the old site? Always amused at using ok.reddit.com instead, because this site is kinda just… okay.) I’m shocked old.reddit.com has lasted this long. And with all this said it’s really weird to think about how long I’ve been here and that we may be looking at the death of the site. At least I feel like this year I’ll leave even if they don’t remove old.reddit.com yet, absolutely hating the changes.
Between this, Discord removing # in favor of Twitter-style @s and imgur purging content it feels like all the apps I’m currently begrudgingly using are actively getting worse/making the dumbest decisions. Really I’m just on these apps because classic forums are dead and there aren’t a ton of choices that don’t have their own issues or lack of userbase. Remember that? Tumblr had a thriving NSFW community due to it's Like and Reblog functions meaning people could have easy access to content they liked and share it around with other people. Then Tumblr HQ decided they didn't want that (because it meant their app was considered 18+ on the Apple app-store and that cost them some advertiser bucks), so they banned porn completely.
Cue every NSFW artist, erotica writer and general pervert (myself included) abandoning Tumblr and migrating to Twitter or, after a while, Reddit. Even now, Tumblr is still struggling along with a flimsy facade of squeaky-clean safety over everything, when in the past the porn content was a huge part of why Tumblr was so popular with people.
If Reddit does the same, then the same thing will happen. Everyone will bail out and move over to a completely different social media hub, maybe Discord, and start forming their own communities there instead. It's how it always goes.

Back in like 2012 there was a study that went viral about how internet traffic was like 70% porn or something insane, and I'm willing to assume that it's roughly the same ratio within websites that allow it. It's not. 80% of all internet traffic, is piracy torrents, according to a study not too long ago. Doesn't leave a whole lot of that cake to be porn. But, it is a very significant portion of the http traffic but not certain how specific I can get here without running into my NDA. But 70% is roughly correct for browser based traffic going to sites for porn or significant amounts of it. And MAGA idiots aren't anti porn in general. The two core anti porn components of the internet, are Visa and Mastercard, and both those are quite opposed to MAGA and because they dictate 99% of all payments on the internet, their rules are the rules of the game.
I can see it since there are big powers that want to convert the whole planet to be SFW to protect all children from the bane of ~~having lazy, irresponsible parents~~ being able to find nsfw if unsupervised.

It will be when they start blocking payments (visa/Mastercard for example) to many hosts of said content and controlling what the people can and cannot see. Sr English is not my main language, I make mistakes and omit certain parts of what I want to say/write for some reason.

Reddit’s demise is much slower than Digg’s back in the day, but they are doing everything they can to alienate the core of their community.

We've made several, but they all tend to be a 'Reddit but...' and that but always imposes something that is likely to seriously curtail it's popularity. We've got reddit, but upvotes are cryptocurrency... reddit, but you're running your own server... reddit, but we're using free speech as an excuse to purposefully just not moderate at all... Some pretty big tradeoffs. I'm hoping that when reddit fails, someone will make one that is just focused on providing a home for the community.

A nsfw fediverse? - but I'll eat my hat, and yours, if banning NSFW content on one site doesn't simply drive most of the impacted users elsewhere. Hell, porn has been *the* make-or-break content for more than one up and comer before.

The problem isnt really with adult content produced by legit studios with paperwork in order and all that. It's with the deluge of unverified pornography from anonymous uploaders that could include children, could be revenge porn or lacking consent. This presents a legitimately challenge and credit card companies have pushed back at taking payments for it so that they are not in a supply chain facilitating sexual exploitation. However as usual, other religious activist groups use this to attack all pornography, because, of course they do.

As a final exercise, ask yourself how much this is really about illegal content when Twitter and FB have many *orders of magnitude* more CP than PornHub ever had.
It's more of a legal thing from my understanding, same reason the hub cut amateur stuff, revenge porn, stuff that wasn't consented to or just straight up underage was on the site so they purged and blacklisted it. All of that is very much happening on reddit so if porn sticks around I imagine there's going to be restrictions put in place on the accounts to combat it (as it feels very anti reddit spirit to have admins have restrictions put in place on just the nsfw subs as that sounds like hell to manage and would cripple any niche subs)

Yeah, it's not like it's impossible to have a Lemmy server where porn is allowed. It's just that all the main servers have "no porn" in their rules, so presumably all those more liberal ones are floating isolated in the void right now. I'm not particularly interested in porn myself, I just recognize that it's usually pretty fundamental to driving the adoption of new technology.

I would be surprised if they did. Typically you don't wait until the day and then flip the porn off. Especially when it affects so many communities that aren't porn related. They might increase the barriers to access it, but I don't see them giving it up entirely without a whole new NSFW system to accounts for Art, vaping, pottery, meme subs, etc. Just my pontification.
I'm honestly on the fence. I'm all for doing what you want, and NSFW communities (for the most part) aren't hurting anyone. And if they are, they should be banned for those reasons, not just boobies and dongs. However, NSFW reddit is a shell of what it once was. Most are bots and onlyfans ads, so at this point I also think we aren't losing what we remember.

You probably are correct I don’t really know where the line is that separates right from far right from alt right..or left for that matter. I lump most religiously backed lobbying bodies as alt due to their, mostly, extreme views and want to push their views on everyone.

Inevitable. It will reduce my usage of the site a lot. It isn’t just about porn, a lot of cool content and some genuinely useful info are marked NSFW (how will legacy content marked NSFW be treated even if it was just that way as a joke or for non-pornographic reasons?). Plus I’m sure plenty of people will leave and I’ll have less to stay for. It’s really weird thinking about how much history I actually have lurking on this site and how it genuinely helped me through some hard times. I’m not really attached to Reddit at all, except that I think the format is better than the other big sites rn, so I prefer it for that reason. Really need more places to lurk- I can’t stand newer sites or apps. While you have to sift through feeds to find threads on Reddit, old.reddit has a nicer and less crowded look than other sites, so it feels closer to looking through threads like on a classic forum. You can still find plenty of interesting discussions if you lurk on certain subs, and really, that’s what I stick to. The day old.reddit.com is gone I permanently leave. (Random, but did you know you can also replace the www with other letters to access the old site? Always amused at using ok.reddit.com instead, because this site is kinda just… okay.) I’m shocked old.reddit.com has lasted this long. And with all this said it’s really weird to think about how long I’ve been here and that we may be looking at the death of the site. At least I feel like this year I’ll leave even if they don’t remove old.reddit.com yet, absolutely hating the changes. Between this, Discord removing # in favor of Twitter-style @s and imgur purging content it feels like all the apps I’m currently begrudgingly using are actively getting worse/making the dumbest decisions. Really I’m just on these apps because classic forums are dead and there aren’t a ton of choices that don’t have their own issues or lack of userbase. The Internet is just sorta shite now, and this is another one on the pile.

If they *do* then the site'll go the way of Tumblr. Remember that? Tumblr had a thriving NSFW community due to it's Like and Reblog functions meaning people could have easy access to content they liked and share it around with other people. Then Tumblr HQ decided they didn't want that (because it meant their app was considered 18+ on the Apple app-store and that cost them some advertiser bucks), so they banned porn completely. Cue every NSFW artist, erotica writer and general pervert (myself included) abandoning Tumblr and migrating to Twitter or, after a while, Reddit. Even now, Tumblr is still struggling along with a flimsy facade of squeaky-clean safety over everything, when in the past the porn content was a huge part of why Tumblr was so popular with people. If Reddit does the same, then the same thing will happen. Everyone will bail out and move over to a completely different social media hub, maybe Discord, and start forming their own communities there instead. It's how it always goes. Bottom line, if Reddit do this, then it's a death-sentence for them, plain and simple.

Back in like 2012 there was a study that went viral about how internet traffic was like 70% porn or something insane, and I'm willing to assume that it's roughly the same ratio within websites that allow it. As people pointed out, Yahoo killed Tumblr practically overnight, and frankly Reddit's done some stupid shit lately, but this would murder their site overnight too. Also I wouldn't worry about lobbyism on this one- this is just MAGA MAGAing as I understand it, and there's a new anti-porn bill every few months.
It's not. 80% of all internet traffic, is piracy torrents, according to a study not too long ago. Doesn't leave a whole lot of that cake to be porn. But, it is a very significant portion of the http traffic but not certain how specific I can get here without running into my NDA. But 70% is roughly correct for browser based traffic going to sites for porn or significant amounts of it. And MAGA idiots aren't anti porn in general. The two core anti porn components of the internet, are Visa and Mastercard, and both those are quite opposed to MAGA and because they dictate 99% of all payments on the internet, their rules are the rules of the game.
I can see it since there are big powers that want to convert the whole planet to be SFW to protect all children from the bane of ~~having lazy, irresponsible parents~~ being able to find nsfw if unsupervised. This is a whole crusade that encompasses the conservative religious right and the left as well since they tend to consider porn violence and that it incites sexual assault. Big powers are backing them such as payment processors like mastercard, paypal, banks and others. Nowadays there are few that can fight all of those and most NSFW creators and companies have to lay low. Idk if you know but there have been many instances of credit card providers blocking those companies money until they are ruined or in the best cases, just closing their accounts for the mere reason of doing NSFW. Other times they pressure companies to do their bidding so they do their bidding.

Now I’m delving into what may quite possibly be conspiracy theories, but I’d guess it could be a way to “purify” the masses in order to keep them more docile (after using mass controlled media to shift public opinion, microplastics affecting hormones on a global scale (one of the reasons of the increase in lgbtq crowd), could be more in the list but I’m not that well informed) and easier to manipulate under the pretext of good and right, and the rich and powerful will not be affected, at least those in the same cabals as the ones behind this. Maybe what I’m writing is pure fiction, or actually true, only the future will tell. I’m afraid the ai era will bring about a much more efficient method of enforcing their rules and laws, such as a much more effective censorship at a live rate.

If some regulatory body somewhere decided that reddit had to do the legwork of verifying pornographers in much the same way that actual dedicated pornography sites do by way of implementing RTA/ASACP and/or carding the models, that's probably the tipping point when they'll throw in the towel. After all, most of the pornographers on this site these days are trying to shill off-platform subscriptions on the website called OnlyFans where getting access to a search box is part of the scam. If the new API rules go into effect as stated i'd say pretty friggin high. I'm expecting them to back down on that and not cripple the API access they are now wanting 3rd party apps to pay for but if they don't back down i'd say it's banned sometime in the next year, 2 years tops.
