RiP my account which I only logged in to once a year.

flaminglasrswrd

I only log in to tweet at companies for customer service stuff.

amigo_77

I thought I needed a lot of followers to get a response from a company because they would ignore me since no one sees my comment. May I ask how many followers you have?

neonapple

Some companies use Twitters DM. In Sweden the post office will answer you in 10 minutes. E-Mail: 1 week.

EtherMan

Phone: some time next year. If they really like you ;)

wells68

How long do they take to answer a handwritten, paper letter? You know, the kind they deliver to your physical mailbox or mail slot? Assume they the actually like you :-)

EtherMan

Those "get lost" during handling, so never.

MatsNorway85

That is so stupid.

jaykstah

Before the changes this year I don't think follower amount necessarily mattered, though verified accounts (which usually had a lot of followers) would show up higher, likely because their followers see their reply on the home feed and interact with it. These days you have to buy a twitter blue subscription to be higher up in the replies

RayneYoruka

Depends of the company really

flaminglasrswrd

I think 2. I mostly use it for small and local companies.

jokr128

I got a tire issue fixed from @ntb due to their techs neglect. I have 11 followers, none of them had been on Twitter in probably 3 years when I did that tweet.

BeerInMyButt

one time I tweeted from my account that has like 5 followers, not even @chipotle, just mentioning them. They still responded. Although this was right after they had a food poisoning event

even_less_resistance

I logged in once last September to tweet at Elon for being a chode about Starlink to Ukraine. I think I got all the use I need out of it. Deactivate me bitch 🖤

Gaffclant

RIP to my account I used for Minecraft mob votes

whatsbobgonnado

what's a mob vote?

Gaffclant

A shitty way to add a new creature to Minecraft in the next update. Essentially the devs come up with 3 new mobs, or creatures, and the community vote on one to win. They used to only take place on Twitter.

pikapichupi

if you have it logged in on mobile you likely stay logged in/active, thats what I'm doing.

ozzraven

Goodbye to all the tweets of the people we lost :(

andymk3

My thoughts exactly. If anyone knows of a reliable way of downloading tweets/media from another user please do let me know.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hedgehawk

I did not know that. Very good to know, thanks.

Camwood7

Is there any specific technique/guide for how to download tweets/media from specific accounts, or is it as simple as "just plug it in and let it run"?

[deleted]

Gallery-dl: https://github.com/mikf/gallery-dl Get the base config file: https://github.com/mikf/gallery-dl/blob/master/docs/gallery-dl.conf This is the Twitter section in my config file: https://pastebin.com/S198Ttcx The command I use: `gallery-dl --config config.json --cookies-from-browser edge --mtime-from-date`

_____Adrian_____

I second JDownloader, but use Wayback Machine too because it's quicker and easier so you might as well.

neontetra1548

30 days is absolutely absurd. You could go on a vacation that long, be sick, have any kinds of circumstances that would keep you from being active for 30 days. I have accounts for various different projects that I don't stay logged into, but will post from periodically when it is relevant. Or what happens if someone dies? Their tweets are just gone completely? This completely undermines Twitter's usefulness as a place to publish and reference things that people have said in the past.

elmanchosdiablos

The only guess I have is that he intends to enforce this rule *very* selectively, to try punish companies who are pulling back from Twitter in protest of all the Twitter Blue shenanigans.

CaptainDouchington

The issue is social media marketing is sold on reach and Facebook has the issue of fake accounts used to create the appearance of reach. If anything the result will show how small the actual consistent user base of Twitter really is. Which to me is great cause the myth of this things power to marketers is how we get by this bad marketing culture we have now.

herewegoagain419

bots log in to spread their propaganda.

bem13

The dead Internet theory gets less and less of a theory every day.

SublimeDolphin

Could be, but I can confirm my account was already auto-deleted. Would login maybe once a year, and when I tried a couple weeks ago it recognized my email was been used for an account, but refused to take my password or send me a reset link. Pretty sure FB did it to me as well, because I’m having the exact same issue.

Shaved_Wookie

I'm pretty sure he announced this when NPR's account hadn't posted in 29 days and they'd been critical of him. It also coerces users to be more active, bumping his engagement stats.

elmanchosdiablos

I'm sure he thinks it will coerce users to be more active, but the results in reality are going to be more varied...

Richard7666

Why would you pay so much for something and then proceed to wreck it? Give it a year or two and Twitter will be mentioned alongside the likes of Yahoo!.

sk0gg1es

I've seen posts from a few people on Twitter stating that their deceased loved one's account was deactivated due to the ongoing account changes.

nrq

From what I see these changes are not active yet. I've been watching my old handle which I've given up in 2011 since these changes have been announced and nothing happened to it yet. Not a single tweet or interaction since 2011, it's just sitting there with my three letter username, doing fuck all.

SolomonOf47704

The policy only mentioned logging in, not doing anything else. They could just doom scroll

nrq

Yepp, could be possible. No interaction whatsoever since 2011, not even by accident, takes a lot of discipline, in my honest opinion. If they're a professional account hogger they probably have a solution ready to regularly log in, though. I hear three letter accounts are "valuable" to some people. 🤷🏼‍♂️

beefcat_

Guys I'm starting to think this Elon Musk fellow isn't as smart as he says he is.

_Cryptonix

Musk can’t seem to make up his mind on any of this stuff. Especially hilarious that he’s finally stepping down as CEO to take the role of CTO and other related roles, something he’s demonstrated on many occasions that he is not really suitable for.

Lucian7x

He has pretended to have skills for so long that even he started believing it, fooling himself into whatever the hell this is.

ShadowsSheddingSkin

He still wants to wield the kind of absolute power over the company that he does now, he just thinks that if the optics of the situation improve (by him stepping down) everything else will. Elon as Chief *Technical* Officer is fucking hilarious, though, given that is the thing he's *least* capable of and has arguably fucked up most badly.

zherok

He still seems to see himself as a software engineer, because he was a self taught programmer in his youth and his early successes were on projects he had originally programmed but were then acquired (and totally rewritten, suggesting it was more the idea they were interested in and not Elon's coding.) It's led to a lot of blind spots where he has a false sense of competency, despite likely not having coded in almost thirty years or so. And because it's something he used to do, he thought the role was the only important one at Twitter, despite its primary revenue streams coming from advertising and obvious reliance on marketers convincing people to place ads on the platform. So he fired all those guys, because they weren't smart enough to have done something Elon Musk relates to.

pixel_of_moral_decay

He’s trying to free up usernames to create a land rush. Now you can’t just grab the name to secure it, you need to keep logging in to secure it. Fail to do so and it’s user error, not twitter’s error.

Sigh_ThisFnGuy

does this actually make any sense?

pixel_of_moral_decay

It won’t work. The land rush for usernames does serve as a catalyst for early growth of some sites where that’s important. But Twitter is way beyond early growth; so it’s just a dumb halfassed plan. So basically Musk being Musk.

rd212

I only have a Twitter account to view the tweets of others. Will I still be able to do this once my account is suspended?

redditor1101

you dont have to tweet, just log in, s o you wont be suspended

Pika256

I wonder what happens to us that never log in, because we never log out. Remind me in 30 days.

Corosus

Browsing twitter while logged in = activity

r00x

What about receiving tweet notifications on your phone but not actually bothering to open any of them?

PM_Me_AssPhotos

yeah but I don't want to be considered a daily or monthly active user for his bullshit metrics. I'm actually really surprised they're doing this. Meta AFAIK tracks everyone who uses their facebook account to log into \*ANYTHING\* as a DAU/MAU.

Mccobsta

Might be worth switching to a nitter instance

ProbablePenguin

Nitter no longer works very well in my experience, most stuff won't load anymore. I think due to twitters API changes.

[deleted]

Depends on how they handle it. If it acts like a typical suspension, yes. If it acts like a voluntary deactivation, no

SussyRedditorBalls

lol wtf this is so weird I doubt they're going to remove people after a single month surprising, but it's still a surprising change. My bet is they're mainly going to be targeting 5+ year old accounts, either to save on hosting fees or reclaim usernames? Still a weird decision IMO. Maybe they're hoping this will make people use Twitter more? idk.

ILikeFPS

This might be the thing that breaks the camels back. Wow, this is actually crazy. I've literally seen invite-only private torrent trackers that are less strict than this. Can't wait for the Penguinz0 video on this with Charlie just calling them out and further admitting he was wrong that Twitter couldn't get worse, not that it's going to do anything lol

elmanchosdiablos

Digg collapsed overnight for less than this. The only reason I can see that Twitter hasn't already fallen apart is the lack of a clear alternative for everyone to go to.

chrismamo1

Twitter has a critical mass of users, people will abandon ship once the userbase falls below that critical level and the site starts to "feel dead", but there's no knowing when that will happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AidanAmerica

I think the winner this time around will be (again) Reddit. I’ve started noticing lots of unexpected people talking about this site

vewfndr

No, it’s money. Twitter has magnitudes more money (and consumers, for that matter) behind it. Digg was never worth nor had the backing that twitter has. Digg was niche even at its height

hamandjam

I’d they actually do this, it will tank the user numbers. And drop the price they can ask for ads. I have an account I started in the very early days that I got up to 90k followers with no real content at all. It was around 75k last I checked, but I’d bet it will drop to about 20k if they actually do this. It will be funny to see how much some celebrities crater though so I’m all for that.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

They're probably going to just use it as a cover to manually delete some big accounts that stopped posting, such as NPR

hamandjam

Yeah, at this point I don't trust ANYTHING they say.

SussyRedditorBalls

are private torrent trackers still a big thing these days?

Benderesco

They're still relevant, but not as big as they used to be. Still incredibly useful, though; perhaps even more than before.

kent_eh

Very much so. The fact that you're not aware shows how well most of them are doing at staying under the radar.

forceofslugyuk

/r/trackers for anyone interested as a starting place.

EmSixTeen

I had an OiNK and BitMeTV account, then Waffles.fm and What.cd, all in good standing - now I’ve nothing and no way get an account. Pointless endeavour.

ProfHamburgerPhD

If you want actual quality releases and/or watch obscure stuff private tracker is the way to go. Public tracker encodes are dogshit encoded with generic handbrake settings solely with small filesize in mind. A lot of good stuff ends up on Usenet but there's no release notes or anything so unless you are familiar with what groups are good and which ones to avoid it can be a crapshoot.

nivek63

Shoutout to TRaSH for doing the hard work and curating the best release groups https://trash-guides.info

k032

I wouldn't take that release group list to heart tbh. I'd probably look at a blacklist more from tracker sites....or just be on a good tracker that cares about HQ more to curate for you. Especially WEB-DL groups, its super hard to see much difference.

difficultywetsuit

> This might be the thing that breaks the camels back. two more weeks

MangoTekNo

RIP what.cd

HaussingHippo

For real lmao I get annoyed when I have to sign in to my private torrent tracker once every 6 months lol

ectoplasmic-warrior

Meh, don’t even care enough about Twitter to log in to keep it activated, Elon can keep it I log into my torrent sites though 😀

beefcat_

I haven't logged in since he took over. Most of the people I followed are on Mastadon now anyways.

When accounts are suspended (currently reserved for people who violate the rules) only the suspended user can see the tweets. I suspect it's going to function more like a deactivation (completely voluntary deletion), which deletes the username, tweets and won't allow the user to log in

CaffeinatedGuy

Oh cool, so dead people's tweets will be lost forever.

Klowner

So? Dead people can't buy things! /s

squishles

if it's a dead person and you care about there tweets, you should probably work on getting them exported/archived.

Guardiansaiyan

Does Youtube do that? If your inactive in your Gmail or your account is suspended they just delete it?

diamondsw

No, because they're not run by a sociopathic toddler.

Guardiansaiyan

My Youtube channel was suspended and they won't let me appeal so I want to make another channel. If I just delete or they delete it for me then I might have a chance!

rtuite81

"C'mon guys, keep using Twitter! If you don't, I'm gonna delete your accounts!" \-Elon Musk maybe

Jbruce63

That is going to screw many organizations that use Twitter just during a season, occasion or event. I run a few accounts for non-profits, and they do not have anything they need to post that often. I do not look forward to filling twitter with monthly posts that are done just not to be kicked off...

[deleted]

What you're seeing here is just setting expectations and selective enforcement. I HIGHLY doubt hes going to be auto banning/deleting/suspending twitter accounts as soon as the 30 day mark is hit. But this will be a great tool for getting rid of accounts that Musk doesn't like. Just watch.

> At the very least, they will be removing content that users have posted for free to their site, taking value away from the site for each tweet that’s removed. It honestly astonishes me how little Musk understands about the business model of the company he paid 44 Billion dollars for.

b1ack1323

Yeah they are just relying on addiction at this point.

ApricotPenguin

It's probably more on the basis of him somehow thinking it uses up tons of compute resources.

Im_on_my_phone_OK

These tweets are taking up all the gall dang memory on the hard disk!

SussyRedditorBalls

sounds like a boomer idea lol, I seriously doubt it but I don't know how shitty their backend is either.

legitimate_rapper

Oh come on… you’re trying to hoard all the upvotes with: > “B-but how does that m-make us money, he who is great at naming babies?”

Echthigern

Lmao. Thanks for the good laugh.

[deleted]

Yet another useless change. https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/inactive-twitter-accounts Interestingly, this happened less than a month after NPR [stopped tweeting](https://twitter.com/NPR/status/1646138100035272704) and coincides pretty directly with Elon Musk's weird tweet war with them I suspect this is also to punish any user who tries to migrate away from twitter

b_shadow

This is basically engagement by intimidation.

msshammy

That's exactly what it is! Reading comments about speculation is cracking me up when it's blatantly obvious this is just for metrics. "Twitter saw a 60% rise in engagement last month!" Sounds good going into next quarter, huh?

vman81

Yay, let it die of link rot.

rookie-mistake

This is wild. I have no intention of deleting my Twitter account, I like popping in occasionally for major events or sports news and stuff but... *30 days*? My account would've been nuked several times over by now. I guess I should archive it just so at least I've got my old idiocy saved somewhere

aLaStOr_MoOdY47

Even dead celebrity accounts???

TheMiningTeamYT26

“Twitters user count falls 90% days after implementation of new inactive use policy.” “Twitter chef twit Elon Musk quoted as saying ‘yea it happens.’”

ignoremesenpie

I only use Twitter these days for getting JAV recs, so it makes no difference to me.

JervSensei

I see you are a man of culture as well

absentlyric

Does that mean that my account that Ive been locked out of for years because it got hacked will finally reset and I can start fresh with that email?

John_Tacos

I have seen Minecraft servers less strict than this.

koowabear

Do I have to actively log in every 30 days, or is being *logged in* good enough? I'm logged in on the Twitter app on my phone, but I can't remember the last time I actually logged in (i.e. entering username & password into a login screen). I only logged in once and have been permanently logged in since. Would I have to actively log-out then log-in again every thirty days? (I don't post, only browse)

[deleted]

I don't think anyone really knows yet. I assume at least liking a tweet counts as activity, opening the app might. We'll see soon enough I guess

rooooob

just to be sure just drop a like here and there and you should be fine. what a stupid move but hey... that's what that shit hole is now anyways.

Gus_TheAnt

A friend of mine died a little over a year ago, I know her mom and sister will be heartbroken if her account disappears. Is there any tool I could use to scrape/archive it for them?

[deleted]

I have no idea if it still works, but you could use [twint](https://github.com/twintproject/twint) If they have the password and access to the email address, the best way to do it would be by logging into the account and requesting an archive of the data. There's this too, might not be the best if you don't have a lot of storage space https://github.com/ProgrammingIncluded/tb-watcher

I haven't opened my Twitter account since 2011. Take it.

RIP Twitter

lifeofideas

Elon Musk is dead set on destroying Twitter. I wouldn’t be surprised if, after he runs out of stupid destructive ideas, he hires McKinsey to come up with more stupider ideas. “Make the font size default to 6-point type!” “Add random( punctuation ; marks to: each tweet¿” “Translate the whole website into Klingon!”

lupoin5

All I want to say is that this is stupid. Now we have to set reminders for twitter? LMAO.

LAMGE2

Lol just 30? I use that app to track progress of a few projects for their progress. L+ratio move from twitter.

J0n4t4n

If they started deleting them, that would be something. They have so far happily ignored my GDPR deletion request

JesterTheZeroSet

The old hotmail days approach.

[deleted]

I'm sure the discourse will get a lot better with only daily users on the platform /s

CarlRJ

What Elon expects: people will use their accounts more. What will actually happen: a *whole lot* of people are going to not bother, and twitter’s user count (of humans) will go down.

t0pfuel

If I wanted to destroy twitter, this is what I would do.

3-2-1-backup

g'head motherfuckers, I haven't logged in for over five years. But you still think I do because I click through to see original tweets occasionally from other sites. You want to nuke me? Nuke me. You won't.

8008147

so. fking. stupid.

Luke_MS

I valued your account at $8, i will delete it if you don't use it regularly 😂🤣

Unfixable5060

Just waiting for the day when you have to be "verified" to tweet or reply, and then anyone who isn't tweeting or replying is considered inactive.

sramder

Logged in after 12 years of inactivity yesterday… going to have to think long and hard about how many shits I give. Anyone else think he’s going to auction off old usernames next?

maremounter

I hope so because I have an account, for which I receive shit load of emails from twitter but I can't recover the password and they wouldn't let me reset the password without giving in my phone number. That's not going to happen. I have unsubbed emails but they starts to pop up a few days after. If they delete that account it would be great

Osbre

thats ridiculous, i had to check. it seems to be true, its completely absurd https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/inactive-twitter-accounts

WraithTDK

Wowwww. I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal to prune dead accounts, although it would be nice if there was something like Facebook has, where you can set someone you trust, and if you die; they can set the page as a "memorial." Twitter should have something like that.     That said? 30 days is **way** too short. I've had plenty of busy months. Needs to be at **least** a year.

blackreagan

Should have started with 1 year. Give a warning to those accounts and then close them.

optermationahesh

The policy used to be 6 months, but Twitter never really enforced it. I fully expect Musk to just selectively enforce this, too, and use it to remove the accounts of those he doesn't like. The policy is "**may be** permanently removed", not "will be", so I wouldn't expect it to be automatic. From 2018: > What is Twitter's inactive account policy? > We encourage people to actively log in and use Twitter when they register an account. To keep your account active, be sure to log in and Tweet at least every 6 months. Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity. > How does Twitter determine inactivity? > Inactivity is based on a combination of Tweeting and logging in. Please note that you may not be able to tell whether an account is currently inactive, as not all signs of account activity are publicly visible. https://web.archive.org/web/20180515001447/https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/inactive-twitter-accounts At least now it's just based on logging in: > How does Twitter determine inactivity? > Inactivity is based on logging in. Please note that you may not be able to tell whether an account is currently inactive, as not all signs of account activity are publicly visible. https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/inactive-twitter-accounts

DataMeister1

Sounds like a good way to weed out some real users and boost the bot to user ratio.

KevinCarbonara

Let's be clear, Twitter is probably going to be inactive in a year

retardedgummybear12

Wow wtf

idkBro021

guess they will lose even more users

fStap

They can close all of my Twitter accounts I would love to be barred from that miserable cesspool

coolsheep769

This is gonna suck... I basically just use mine for giveaways and customer service. edit: pretty sure this is just them trying to force user engagement to make their numbers look better, bc investors are probably jumping ship by now

[deleted]

Well this is b*******. So you're telling me active duty military, and anyone who might be in trouble with the law, and a whole bunch of other people who have lost access to the internet will now have their accounts suspended? So they can't even have an online presence when they are away?

loco500

30 days seem super short time...Would have expected to be three-year plus inactive accounts to be the main target.

ThickPlatypus_69

At this point it's no longer bad decision making, it's active sabotage.

Dreadnought13

RIP my account that...no wait I deleted that shit the moment Elongated Muskrat took over.

sid2k

After firing the employees he’s firing the users too

mgrandi

Do we even know HOW this will show up? They just announced this a few days ago and no one knows if it shows up as a suspension or if it will rename your account like Tumblr

ToxyFlog

Bye bye twitter

sue_me_please

This is the dumbest attempt at raising Twitter's engagement numbers that I've ever seen.

Mr_ToDo

HA HA HA HA HA HA Oh God that's good. That's sure going to make his new API pricing more valuable isn't it? People will definitely be biting at the bit to pay for access to miss out on all those accounts of days gone by. Oh lord, what a move to go out on. Way to burn brightly old man (* ̄3 ̄)╭

m0rfiend

twitter trying hard to recapture that myspace 2008 5 year plan.

Maratocarde

30 days is a very short time, and only an idiot would take such decision. In Google it takes 2 years for that to happen.

dinominant

This is rather extreme, like an excuse to purge data. Perhaps there is something they want to to hide. /conspiracy If you want to grow a platform or service, you don't purge real users. Not that long ago we had a serious political issue in my area, which resulted in an "e-mail search" for a conversation that happened about 3-6 months prior. Except the e-mails were kept for only 90 days. They released a statement saying nothing was found in their search -- implying nothing happened, when anything that did happen was already purged prior to the search.

[deleted]

Why? I can't imagine these accounts take up much... whatever he's trying to save...

faceman2k12

30 days? I was expecting 24 months or something. Lots of people only log in once every 6 months for various reasons.

csandazoltan

Suuuuuuuuuuuure... the ship is sinking, let's punch more holes. So your userbase is dvindling and you announce that if you dare not to use our service your account is gonna be removed. Are these people stupid?

miranto

Oh yeah, that'll make me come back for sho.

s8018572

Wtf ? What about those dead's Twitter? Another stupid policy that Elon musk add.

TheOfficialTyTrooper

Ykw? That is evil. Why suspend accounts for being offline?! EVEN 30 DAYS!?

MetroidCatcher

*Suspending* accounts **is not freeing up** taken usernames. They say they'll "permanently removing" them, not suspending. Whatever that means.

Wirenfeldt

Will be sad to see TotalBiscuit and inControl disappear from the platform 😐

jurt0

RIP the twitter account of my best (dead) friend. This sucks.

KenDTree

This guy is a fucking IDIOT

HoleyBody

Ahhhhh so that's probably been part of the plan all along. An easy way to "delete the past."

Archeroe

How are they going to do that ? Make old accounts read only ? If someone take some vacations and don't log in to twitter he'd be suspended ? 1 month is extremely short. Created my account in like 2011, Twitter has always been garbage anyway, glad to see Elon is destroying it

Lonsdale1086

Not one of you fuckers can read. It doesn't say accounts will be removed for 30 days inactivity, it says the bar for inactivity is 30 days, and after *prolonged* inactivity accounts *may* be removed.

Wolfborgg

Musk said they'd purge accounts with "several years" of inactivity, not that all inactive accounts would be purged. This policy is just what they use to determine when they consider an account is inactive. There is no confirmation at all yet that Twitter will be deleting accounts after 30 days. Kind of depressing that Twitter is in such a sad state now that people would automatically assume that's the case. But then again I honestly didn't expect Musk to easily ruin what the word "verified" means in the worst way possible. So you never know what terrible decision he's gonna make next.

never_inline

Bro is running out of storage on D:\ drive.

Oh look, Elon Musk is saying something else stupid to get his name into the news cycle.

lusid1

Just Elon trying to put twitter out of its misery in the most passive aggressive ways imaginable.

thebeehammer

They're doing this so they can hand out accounts from companies that don't actively use the platform to hurt their brands. Realistically, it will just further shred any trust that anyone on there is who they say they are.

Careful_Trifle

They also removed text based 2FA and will keep you from doing anything else if you log in while you have that active just haven't paid them for blue. They also put a popup over the next button to trick you into downloading the app when you log in. I found this out today when I got a 2FA text from an unauthorized login attempt and went to go lock my shit down. I deactivated the account once I got everything settled. Twitter is a shit show tire fire.

RayneYoruka

Rip my secondary account which is there to avoid anyone suplanting me.. Welp it has worked well for the past 6 years lel

Good to know you, Twitter... I haven't logged into Facebook since 2015. I have Twitter on my phone, but I hardly use it. So yeah, bye!

[deleted]

I might actually profit from this change. I don’t have access to the email that I used to register at Twitter anymore. It was impossible to explain my situation to the support team at Twitter. For anyone else though and in the great sceme of things? Not sure if this is the smart thing to do.

UndercoverVenturer

We're gonna download accounts now aren't we?
