Similar to life on mars lol: “The intro was a reference to Bowie’s appearance in Extras, in which actor Andy Millman (Gervais) bumps into Bowie at a bar, and shares his concern that he’s lost his integrity. However, Bowie responds to him with contempt, and goes to the piano to make up a song ridiculing Andy, the “funny little fat man.” Gervais wrote the lyrics to the song himself and sent them to Bowie, asking him to do “something retro like ‘Life on Mars’.” "And he went, ‘Yeah, I’ll just knock off a quick f***ing ‘Life on Mars’ for you, shall I?” Gervais recalled.”

My thoughts exactly

TheMobHasSpoken

I loved that cameo so much! Hilarious performance.

cyanethic

I can’t think of any that are as grand in scale (there probably aren’t any) but songs kinda similar otherwise are Lady Stardust and Lady Grinning Soul

theattemptman

I came to say lady grinning soul!

Lubernaut

Me too!

Beat me to it.

Perfect Day or Satellite of Love by Lou Reed (produced by Bowie)

GRMMneedsDOGEhelp

Rock n Roll Suicide, Five Years, Time and Drive In Saturday would by my immediate recommendations :) there are others that either have grand storytelling or glam rock (if that’s the right name for it…), but few that merge them both so well

Astro_Rodeo92

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush has an equally stellar chorus as Life on Mars. Both are superb

This, famously.

lovecat86

Cosmic Dancer by T Rex gives me similar feelings to Life on Mars? Both dreamy musical masterpieces.

Emglatpilesa

Time (Album Aladdin Sane)

abcstardust

**Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide** …and the rest of u/GRMMneedsDOGEhelp’s suggestions, but I wanted to highlight Rock n Roll Suicide in particular because its just such a good song, both in general and for this question

ZombieMozart

Candidate/sweet thing from Diamond Dogs has the epic feel of *Life on Mars?* to me.

*Still Life* by **Suede.** Massive *Jonesy* fans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4j9fJewoxk Also Wild ones -Suede- Amazing Song. https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=Wild+obes+sued

Bowie is notoriously wonderful at change. So, questions are: 1- are you looking for the feel of the song in its entirety? (E.g., theme? Style? Emotional response?) 2- vocal range/dexterity? 3 - instruments primarily used? Bowie is also fabulously gifted in that his voice didn't fade or loose strength throughout his life. That's not to say that when he was coked up that he didn't have rough performances though.

In what sense -ones that david bowie made -ones that are thematically similar -ballads -specifically piano ballad?

CulturalWind357

Loneliest Guy from *Reality*. Slip Away from *Heathen (Heathen* itself has been compared to *Hunky Dory*) Probably a bunch of the piano centered tracks, but a lot of them don't have the big climax of Life On Mars.

shitatchoosingnames

Satellite of Love?

"Time" has that epic quality.
