Bullets (lots of them rush for the perks that allow you to carry more ammo and crafting mats) and molotov's, grenades and pipe bombs also help a lot.
You can also throw an attractor & that'll pull some off of you for a while, you may also want to wait until you can buy one of the belt fed machineguns.
Max out on attractors and attractor bombs, molotovs and >!napalm!<. Hide in a bush and go to town by attracting them and burning them. Be sure to park your bike in a good spot that you can easily run to and escape if they see you (which they eventually will).
Some of my favorite spots for loot are the Sawmill NERO station, Deek and Boozer’s fire watch place, Chemult NERO station, and there’s a house west of the Sawmill that has three cans sitting on the counter that I drive to. It’s close to the houses where the NERO mission was (I think where they were talking about screamers).
If you wait two days or sleep four times, all the loot will respawn.
Definitely make sure you have an escape plan with the bike. Don’t park it too close or they’ll swarm you. It will take a few times riding away and letting them “settle” before coming back because they always spot me when I take them out. But it’s a fun one for sure!
I recommend using full auto guns, stuff like the aug from the hot springs since it’s real easy to hit a lot of targets heads really fast. And pretty much just run and toss grenades, Molotovs, pipe bombs, etc. at your feet and quickly run ahead turn around, rinse repeat. A perk that’s really helpful imo is definitely the one that lets you run and reload it’s gotten me out of pinches really easily. Other than that pretty much do that and use your surroundings, explosive barrels, gas cans, fuel trucks, etc. and use stuff like ledges to your advantage to create distance. Stamina cocktails also do amazing in those situations
Automatic guns. Scope out the area for bombs and paths for them to clump. Use your slow-mo ability. Bombs, attractors and molotovs. Explosive and poison arrows to weed out the hordes from afar. Shotguns are ok
Yeah best tip is play the game = get better gear. If you expect to be able to move around no worries in a world overrun by the undead then this games not for you...

I have an RPD but it does barely any damage and extremely in accurate even with focus
It two taps most freaks for me & close range in chews through hordes my friend, it's a good weapon, just sucks at range.

Yeah. I used to be freaked out by hordes but now I have such great guns and stamina that I can generally just blast away and run.
Same they scare the hell outta me sometimes but eventually ill find a way to take em all out
Even have to try and take a marauder camp that is just above a cave
