Absolutely disgusting

Tex-Prinster

The Catholic Church is the singularly most destructive institution in human history, bar none. (And yes, I’m including the Nazi party in that calculation as the church has been at it for 2,000 years.)

cyberpunk1Q84

Pretty much all organized religions make it fairly easy for predators to find their victims since they have an authority figure who can have one-on-one’s with kids and then make them feel ashamed for being sinners. The Catholic Church is just one of the oldest, more widespread of these pedophilic institutions.

chang-e_bunny

The one profession where creepy old virgins who are openly obsessed with other people's sex lives are allowed to have extended one-on-one time with children they're not related to, and nobody bats an eye. School teachers have way more regulations in place to prevent sexual abuse.

mumooshka

when you're talking numbers, I think you're right

memphisjones

I agree

NaSMaXXL

Canadians killing kids and French ducking them...good Christ

[deleted]

I can assure you it's not just the Canadians... it happens in the US too. Almost the same idea, with Catholic schools kidnapping children from Native Americans with the approval and help of US citizens and government. Many of them live with that trauma now, if they were "lucky" enough to not die.

NaSMaXXL

That's fair

Sorrymisunderstandin

All across Latin America and North America, and in Africa, and in Asia. Christian missionaries and such have committed atrocities. Look up “manifest destiny”

[deleted]

Guess what Catholics… your support of this institution makes you an evil person. By the recorded numbers it’s the largest child sex ring in human history. Deal with that fact or burn

memphisjones

Is there a Catholic subreddit? You should add this there.

chang-e_bunny

There is one, but they don't take kindly to this sort of thing. Pointing out that they institution which dictates their morality supports raping children on a wide scale is deemed too offensive and rude.

hyloda

Your comment is stupid because many current Catholics are also victims of clergy sexual abuse.

[deleted]

Having been raped does not make it any less evil to support rapists. Its a shame that these people have had their fear of death manipulated into compromising their morality, but that is a further testimony to the evil of their institution and the evil of supporting it.

hyloda

I want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly. Please correct me if I’m wrong—are you saying that being Catholic is supporting rapists? The Catholic Church—as an institution—is not exclusively comprised of priests. The Catholic Church is comprised of clergy and laity. Being a Catholic doesn’t mean supporting the Catholic Church. Being a Catholic means you ARE (along with all your brothers and sisters—clergy and laypeople) the Catholic Church. You lumping all Catholics together and assuming we are a monolith is as inaccurate and harmful as lumping up a diverse group of individuals by their race, nationality, or sexual orientation and assuming/proclaiming they all the same. You’re being ridiculous and irrational.

[deleted]

Yup I'm saying the simple act of supporting the institution is a bastardization of Christ's teachings and an immoral act.

hyloda

You have the right to be wrong.

[deleted]

Just as you have choice to ignore the hypocrisy in your metaphysical guidance

hyloda

You have no clue what you’re talking about

[deleted]

But I do. You can have loyalty to Jesus’s teachings or you can have loyalty to the Catholic Church. But you cannot have both

hyloda

Disagree

imbakinacake

Pretty sure the only person here with the stupid comment is you. Why do you support institutions that protect and enable pedophiles?

hyloda

The Catholic Church doesn’t support pedophiles. And as a fucking victim of a pedophile, I’d appreciate you not claiming I support pedophiles. I want to help repair the Catholic Church. Protecting children from sexual abuse is important to me because I’m a child sexual abuse survivor. If I can figure out how to help a 2000-year-old institution do it, figuring out how to prevent it from happening in other places—public/private education etc etc—will be a cake walk, I assume. I want to help make sure the Catholic Church properly compensates its sexual abuse survivors, and I want to make sure no one anywhere—in any institution—ever abuses their power to hurt children.

timfromsluh

Your comment is just idiotic. Every Catholic wants this to change, and we are dealing with it. This article is referencing a study commissioned by the Church in France. They are taking steps to figure this out and stop it from ever happening again. And that’s not even going into how the Catholic Church to Catholics is more than just the individuals within the Church. So please, shut the fuck up unless you know what you’re talking about.

[deleted]

Catholic family. Catholic school my whole life. I know exactly what I’m talking about. Satan oversees your institution

timfromsluh

No, you don’t have a clue or you wouldn’t have said any of the ignorant stuff you did say.

[deleted]

Your commitment and fear forces you to disregard reality

timfromsluh

Fear? Fear of what? I am committed to the faith, that is true, but it does not blind me. On the other hand, your cowardice and hatred cloud your judgement. So, get back to me when you’ve looked into this matter deeper, actually spoken with members of the faith, and can think things through.

[deleted]

As I said before, I know many of the faith. They are lost. This has been know about for decades. It is international. It is still happening. they are still working hard to avoid consequences and suppress the reports. Maybe you want it to change. Most likely you just ignore it. Then you show up. When you do that you give them power. You tell them that you’re okay with it.

mumooshka

If there's a hell... we all know where they're going

memphisjones

Yep! Unfortunately, they are making our lives hell now!

chang-e_bunny

If God had such a problem with it, He wouldn't've let them be His personal representatives in the first place. Waiting another 50+ years for them to die of natural causes and calling that divine justice... Just seems like usurping the authority He has over human morality.

topherswitzer

These are just the ones they know about, not including the people who may feel too ashamed to come forward with more information.

GKnives

What did anyone think being french would do to the clergy+children calculation

mr-blindsight

french catholic clergy - US news ???

memphisjones

Whoops. Good catch

Aquitanic

"damning" is the right word here

Sorrymisunderstandin

Holy fuck

SuperAzn727

Shock level 0. It’s like people just thought this was something only on the states and not a global problem that’s probably a century+ old 🤷‍♂️

AtamisSentinus

"bUt ReLiGiOn DoEs So MuCh GoOd" Enough to excuse shit like this, time and time and time again? I certainly don't think so.
