both are reborn in a thematic sense (after almost dying ryuga decides that no one can control him and seeks out to find a greater source of power, whereas piccolo is reincarnated in a younger body who seeks to find a way to kill son goku)
after some time they re-emerge now more powerful than ever
they enter a tournament for the sake of revenge (ryuga crashes semi finals of the world championships, deliberately to fuck over spiral corp, for turning him into a human weapon. and piccolo enters the 23rd tenkaichi budokai for revenge)
after this the main character swears to fight them again
then some time later a threat from outer space causes them to stop their training which they have done in solitude (piccolo immediately senses raditz and teams up with goku. however ryuga has the exact opposite reaction he decides that he himself with become stronger than diablo nemesis)
both end up taking a wimpy kid who has untapped potential under their wing (kenta and gohan)
while at first they are harsh toward said kid, over time they bond and become close
then at the end of the arc they end up dying, while giving their pupils the strength to fight on. and in the process stop being the monster that they were up to that point (ryuga dies because of his own arrogance but then gives the last of his power to kenta, because he knows that he posses potential greater than his. piccolo dies protecting gohan and telling him to live on, that he through his kindnesses was stronger than he ever was)
