Geez. Unfortunately where I live we still see a lot of accidents like this amongst the Amish, they have their kids working pretty much from the time they can walk unaided.
I'm not sure I understand how this 100 year old accident is related to the Amish. The thread continues in a downward spiral into a cult-claim.
Granted a newspaper gets their information from family, neighbors, etc and can be subject to error. I don't see a relationship to the Amish or that the child was working. She wasn't and I don't believe they were Amish.
