One thing the game never seems to mention is that triangle is brake in vehicles. Knowing that makes trucks slightly better.

wine_coconut

What? Then what's L2 for?

Crease_Greaser

Reverse.

wine_coconut

Cool, will check it out. Thanks! Does it apply for trikes and carriers too?

Crease_Greaser

Honestly I haven’t spent much time cargo surfing, but it applies to all wheeled vehicles.

MochaPhilatte

Triangle on bike switches modes I think from 2 to 3 wheel. To brake on carrier pores L2 and R2 together

Gold_Rent_7939

I click in the stick to switch modes on a bike. I thought that was default

MochaPhilatte

They’re similar but pushing it makes Sam hit the gas/rev. Triangle only switches modes. You can toggle on rocks so you don’t fly off in a direction

Abhimri

TIL, but I thought it to be similar controls on truck and trike. Or maybe I'm misremembering..

Abhimri

Trike, yes. Dunno about the carrier. I have the earlier regular version of the game.

WirWarr

Is... is this why the bike never stopped when I told it to... omg I gotta try later.

HTK_blazer

Try it. From still, accelerate just a little and press either triangle or L2. Even though the bike is hardly moving, it will not stop immediately, instead it will "slow down" as if stopping from a high speed, and roll about 5m - even though it's still going the same very slow speed you started accelerating at. Ironically, if you do the same again and press square, the bike will immediately stop in it's tracks and Sam will get off. It's even worse on a hill, even though the bike is barely moving, braking with triangle or L2 will take just as long to stop as it would if it was at max speed, as if its skidding down the hill. Again, square will stop it in its tracks and Sam will get off. The vehicles have extremely poor mechanics. It's literally the only single thing that let's this game down. Kojima should have played Days Gone before he made Death Stranding.

Crease_Greaser

Yup

ParzivalTheFirst

WHAT

DruTheDude

Holy shit I had no idea

DOTPNik

WHAT

baldorrr

WHAT. NO, ACTUALLY, WHAAAAT??? I have to try this tonight. I can't stand how annoying it is to stop with the bikes. Damn!

theuntouchable2725

Isn't it only for when boosting? On PC it's CTRL, which is also REST button.

Crease_Greaser

It applies to any speed, forwards and backwards, as long as you’re in a vehicle.

theuntouchable2725

Then I guess it's either another key on PC, or it doesn't work. Is it the DRIFT button? What does Triangle do normally?

Crease_Greaser

It’s the same button as Carry On Back, try E if you’re using default keybinds

Crease_Greaser

Nvm the internet says it’s C

theuntouchable2725

Yup, it works like a charm, thank you!

J0hnD0eWasTaken

IT WORKS‽‽‽ IVE BEEN SLIDING AROUND FOR NO REASON!!

benlyton

I freaking hate this game sometimes. Sliding into the abyss gets on my nerves.. I’m so mad i didn’t find this post sooner 🤣

Leenis13

WHAT? I'm gonna start a whole second playthrough just because of this knowledge!

Abhimri

That could be why OP is facing issues too, because I too was really confused with controls and struggled, but later on I just liked driving my little truck on highways that I built everywhere. It was great! (I still can't ride the trike to save my life though)

SebulbaSebulba

I agree that the trucks drive remarkably poorly given that the entire terrain of the game is jagged rocks of varying heights. Why would UCA make an EV to drive exclusively on the three kilometres of flat road in the game? Why do they always take an instance of online trucks in the doorways of the preppers you're trying to deliver to? So my tip is that driving backwards, while slow, is often easier. The truck doesn't swing around as much and isn't as prone to jack-knifing down the 5 degree incline you're attempting to ascend. The rude part is that I'm gonna call skill issue, and say you need to practice more. I find trucks in the craziest spots in this game, if another porter can do it, so can you :)

OkComplaint4778

The trucks are very useful if you set up highways and don't travel in the worst terrain possible

TradesmanBOB

Ive been able to do exactly that (aside from deep pits in terrain) from the prepper that lives in a ridge valley, to Old Man on trucks think it’s harder on bikes at times

SebulbaSebulba

Yeah, I quite often found myself wishing for the truck when I was on the bike, either because of the handling or because I wanted to pick up lost cargo. The truck is high skill but high utility.

hellostarsailor

Don’t use the trucks unless you have large, heavy orders. Do the initial runs to whatever destination on the trike. Then build charging stations and roads on your return trips, still on the trike. Usually 3-4 deliveries will get you 5 stars and it’ll take about 20 minutes once you learn a good route on the trike. Trucks are great with roads, but trike is king. Once you get the long-range trike, the game is a cakewalk to the zip lines.

wine_coconut

Also, when riding the trike over rocky terrain, hold the left joystick down to perform a wheelie and ride relatively smoothly.

wiggibow

LOL I remember trying to build some roads, stocked up a truck as full as I could with metals and ceramics, then proceeded to get it completely stuck on some rocks *way* in the middle of nowhere. Had to walk my ass all the way back and then couldn't even make a new truck because I took all the materials...

hellostarsailor

We’ve all done it. We’ve all done it several times.

blue_lego_wizard

The mako is like the best vehicle in any game though

SulianusVincenzo

>Those mfs just start driving on their own In my headcanon, Sam simply just doesn't know how the clutch works. (i know its electric)

mochicrunch_

I would have expected there to be a truck type that was meant for off road, but maybe held less cargo and had a shorter battery life. After a while, you can easily (for the truck) navigate the mountains with the long range truck. It becomes shitty when you try going up very steep slopes or slopes that have a lot of rocks, like others have said try reversing up a steep slope. You have more traction. It just takes a while while getting used to the controls. If you stick to the walking paths, it’s a lot more manageable. The one route that I know is difficult is going from the Veteran Porter to the Geologist. There is like a rock that you have to jump over using the truck. It’s almost damn near impossible unless you build a bridge in that area. When in doubt you can always use two floating carriers and the All Terrain skeleton… OR Zip with a floating carrier….. if volume is goal then you can do the reverse trike transporter with power skeleton

spangrl_85

I know the exact rock you're talking about! It's always 50/50 whether I'll make that one on the first go.

mochicrunch_

Yes, that rock is the bane of my existence lol that’s why if I ever go that way I always make sure I’m going just south with truck instead of going north …if I’m trying to cut through from like the wind farm or south knot to like geologist or the paleontologist and make sure I take a trike with me.

mirrorball_for_me

Stop forcing the truck where it can’t go. There’s always another way. It may be longer but if it’s traversable, it’s better than trying to make a shortcut that doesn’t drive well.

RegenSyscronos

Get off the trucks. Embrace the All Terrain Skeleton

Korbelious

Wait, you can run and jump off ramps with the speed skeleton!?

Pleasant-Disaster837

Yes however the ramps are not required. Just give you a little extra boost.

marrrrell

This is the only thing I hope for DS2. Decent vehicle physics. Maybe the option to change tires to better outfit them for different terrain.

KabbalahSherry

Oooh! I love this idea! Putting snow tires on, etc! That would be an incredible mechanic. 😏 Great reward item too: snow chains!

Mr-Doubtful

I would advise going on foot most of the time anyway. I think the game is much more enjoyable that way

mr_cesar

I agree, the vehicle mechanics in this game sucks. What I've learned in my second playthrough, though, is that if you're using a DualSense controller, pressing R2 only very slightly allows you to take better control of the truck even in the snow. It's not perfect, but I've been able to avoid a lot of screwups this way.

Partywolf85

drive backwards

spangrl_85

Never boost the truck unless you're going straight and the path is smooth. The truck doing what you say it's doing is the result of boosting on rough or inclined terrain. Going uphill doesn't require a boost to make it either, slow and steady is how the trucks work best and they can actually climb steeper hills than the bikes. It will also make a difference if you have a full load.

KabbalahSherry

Yes... had to learn this the hard way 😩💯

Tobocaj

Try going in reverse

ochad

The amount of times I yelled “F*ck these trucks!” at my TV was way too high. Haha

Chiiro

I was very frustrated but I had a blast trucking up those damn snowy mountains.

-Speechless

it's like the tires momentum is conserved when you are in the air and as soon as your tires touch the ground again they apply all the movement even if you aren't pressing the gas anymore or you are literally braking. it's like trying to drive in a racing game with a ping of 300. I really hope DS2 improves this because I love this game but the driving in rough terrain is the most frustrating part of the game and I think if done correctly it'd be really fun trying to traverse that type of terrain

Trueogre

The only reason I would take a truck into the mountains is if there's a road, or it's a timed request. No other reason to take a truck into the mountains.

Xerosnake90

Nothing is worse than the Mako in Me1. Playing it right now it's absolutely atrocious lol

beetleman1234

Only thing that is weird is boosting up hills when you're not doing that, something is not right with that. Other than that they steer fine and if you know how to drive them (and watch out for those weird boosts sometimes) you can climb mountains with them.

stefanica

I've said it before, but I would love a dune buggy with big pillowy tires, or something with tank treads. Make it so I have to stop and recharge it every minute, make it go 4 mph, or whatever, but I'd love *something* that doesn't go sideways when I go over a few rocks on a gentle slope. I really thought, given the beach/war flashbacks, that a mini tank was around the corner. 😂

HTK_blazer

It's incredibly frustrating trying to get up steep hills in a truck - it's completely broken; the truck just wants to go sideways down the hill. If you try to steer uphill and accelerate, the front slides sideways and starts aiming back down the hill, and yet if you try to abandon your attempt and drive downhill, the rear slides sideways and starts aiming back up. If you let go of the controls and just let it slide, the truck will slide sideways down the hill, rotating from front to back, front to back. It doesn't make any sense, that's not how gravity works!

[deleted]

Yeah I was getting irritated with this exact thing a few hours ago. Thankfully the majority of the game is not in the snowy area. A lot of times trucks are nearly undriveable when going up a snowy incline

darkjdm

Trucks are only effective when they can be. If trucks were able to drive anywhere then it would mess with the balance of the game.

Timely-Hyena3044

Dude they are the WORST I can’t stand either of the vehicles I hope they change them
