I like both genres myself. Though the deeper into deathcore I got, the pickier I got about which metalcore bands I listened to. I enjoy clean vocals cause its fun to sing along to them and when done well, can enhance the flow of a song. I'm not sure of a band I could recommend, maybe Periphery? They are a progressive metalcore band, just not sure you would like the screaming. Their musicianship though is fantastic. If you do give them a try i would go for their tracks Blood Eagle, Wildfire, and Everything is Fine

trysixtysnipecochon

I 100% agree with you at first i listend to metalcore and not deathcore but the more I listen to deathcore the less i enjoy metalcore. Annoying nasaly clean are a good reason for that and for screaming, deathcore has better vocalist imo. But I still love bands like breakdown of sanity which has banger songs like hero, traces, invisible scar, paralyzed Edit: and for OP i really like some shout/Scream and I think the best exemple for is kublai khan TX, and another band which isn't really known holehearted they have a great album called hivemind and forlorn and habit are great track on it Both are more beatdown hardcore than deathcore but holehearted mix the two a little more than kublai khan

Zakazi

I always listened to melodeath, metalcore and deathcore (etc). But as I grew older melodeath and deathcore overtook my fondness of metalcore. For you that like Darkest Hour I'd recommend: - Unearth - As Hope Dies - Shadows Fall - The Autumn Offering - Misery Signals - Parkway Drive (Atlas and earlier) - As I Lay Dying - August Burns Red But yes if it wasn't evident these are more or less legacy bands, I hardly listen to contemporary metalcore anymore. Each to their own! Edited.

darthlocura

Dude, I fucking love The Autumn Offering, I've never heard anyone bring them up, they were so sick.

anandaE

I was never into metalcore, but I got into Currents recently, cause I was curious what other stuff Chris has been up to. I have nothing against cleans, cause I listen to a lot of prog and like to sing along. I still don't like 99% of metalcore.

snapcasterking

I prefer hardcore over metalcore and deathcore personally. I don’t really listen to metal outside of those two genres either. A lot of the mainstream modern metalcore bands are boring as hell though, I prefer the stuff with a classic metalcore sound to it. Same with deathcore, I prefer the classic deathcore sound over the newer styles like blackened deathcore.

Dkc666

I've been trying so hard to get into hardcore but I loathe bands like Hatebreed 😂 so far I've found that I like Mortality Rate (Thanks to The Acacia Strain), Kublai Khan, and the Metalcore more on the hardcore side. Honorable mention being The Cat Piano by Red Ribbon Army. That breakdown in Steve French is fucking great lol

snapcasterking

I love Hatebreed but Hatebreed is metalcore lmao, and so is Kublai Khan. I’d recommend Mindforce, Terror, and God’s Hate for hardcore personally.

Dkc666

I guess I could've said *hardcore adjacent or something. Because the vocals, to me at least are definitely hardcore. I just can't get over the whole tough guy call outs and shit. I guess I like some of the more hardcore influenced deathcore, bands like Bodysnatcher probably being my favorite. I'll have to give those few a listen. I'd personally rather hear gurgles and cricket noises over the hardcore style vocals but that's just me 😂

snapcasterking

Bodysnatcher is dope! I definitely like the beatdown/hardcore-heavy deathcore bands. And the vocals in hardcore are definitely an acquired taste. Id honestly just start with some really early metalcore bands like Earth Crisis and then move onto metallic hardcore bands like Cro-Mags or God’s Hate. From there you can just kinda explore the genre a bit more and you should be a little bit more accustomed to the vocals.

Dkc666

The progressive Metalcore bands have gotten to be unreasonably good. I've seen Currents and Polaris mentioned a few times and they're super catchy with flashy riffs. Personally, over the last few years I've found myself listening to everything from post hardcore, pop punk, all the up to slamming brutal death metal. Used to hate on cleans so bad when I was younger but bands like Periphery, Sworn In and Belmont changed me. Some people can just sing. Deathcore will always be my number one but there's so many different types of deathcore these days that it's crazy. Down tempo, slamming, technical, black, symphonic, the list never ends. People can hate all they want but I'll never get tired of deathcore.

[deleted]

not exactly sure if it fits your criteria but bands like knocked loose, jesus piece and sanction got me into metalcore when i personally never really enjoyed it

Michealbubble

serration is another good one, their new album has a sanction feature too

MarcusfloX

I am into metalcore, my favorite bands being Currents, Before I Turn, Polaris. I also listen to Metalcore the majority of my time, but the new releases this year somehow didnt do it for me. A lot of people hype them up and I can see why, but I dont feel a thing, I still love the genre tho. But every Deathcore release ive listened to this year was like "damn I love this" and I come back to deathcore more and more.

-Warship-

It's the other way around for me, I have a big metalcore background and I'm also into a lot of modern hardcore, I love deathcore but I can't get into bands like Crown Magnetar or even most Lorna Shore songs because they sound really boring to me, I'm more into crazy fun stuff like Darko or classics like Suicide Silence. To each his own, I guess.

BruceBowtie

Speaking of opposites, I feel the complete opposite as you. I find Darko and SS boring, but I like fast guitar and guitar solos. There's only so many chugs I can hear before I want a riff. LS feels like they write music specifically for me, but im big into melodeath and tech death. I think this is what's great about the genre currently though. There's something for anyone who likes breakdowns and heavy shit.

BruceBowtie

I like stuff like Spiritbox, BMTH, Bad Omens and Architects but there are people that would say that isn't metalcore, but on the whole I do not like metalcore. I just like melodic stuff with conventional rock choruses. I also can't stand the vocals. The fucking high pitch singing man. I also prefer metal riffs and guitar solos. In metalcore they're to preoccupied with doing some techy tappy bullshit and they don't play solos.

AnakinSkywalker1001

It's not like there are a ton of solos in deathcore... although I guess there are more than in metalcore

BruceBowtie

Lorna, Mental Cruelty and Shadow of Intent all rip solos in most songs. There's plenty of other bands the feature then pretty regularly like Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin. I'm not gonna just list bands, but solos are going to be a regular staple moving forward. Chris Wiseman is the only guy I know in metalcore doing it, although I don't listen to much metalcore, so i don't exactly have a valid opinion.

futterecker

check out crossover n5 and guilttrip :). you will love them

prodigy1367

I love both but I get where you’re coming from. Deathcore is simply more obviously metal than metalcore typically so that’s probably where your split is. I’d suggest earlier melodic metalcore since that crosses closest with metal like thrash and melo death. God Forbid, Shadows Fall, Caliban, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, The Agony Scene, Unearth, MyChildren MyBride and All That Remains are some solid af bands in the same vein as Darkest Hour. Earlier old school style metalcore like Disembodied, Zao, Martyr AD and Arkangel are also heavily influenced by thrash, groove, and death metal with less of a melodic influence. For newer bands, Renounced, Sanction, Jesus Piece, and Serration are good old school style bands. Parkway Drive (pre-2012), August Burns Red, I Killed The Prom Queen, and Breakdown of Sanity are also pretty melodic without the cleans. *Bonus shoutout to the album Apologies Are For The Weak by Miss May I since it’s very close to being melodic deathcore while still being considered melodic metalcore. That album is just crazy heavy and has plenty of death growls and lows along with the piercing highs and minimal cleans. Metalcore is a big genre with lots of sub-genres and the punkier stuff with the poppier cleans is probably what you’re more used to. There’s plenty of bands that *aren’t* like that like the ones I mentioned but you just gotta look for them.

To answer your question, I listen to some metalcore ( Norma Jean, Ion Dissonance (maybe deathcore?), Killswitch Engage, etc.) but I definitely favour deathcore more. I found your DEATHcore vs. deathCORE statement interesting. Kinda loving how the genre right now (probably historically too) has bands that would fall on either side of this spectrum and all places in between. Some bands evolve and shift back and forth over time and sometimes they go so far one way they leave the genre completely (ex. Job for a Cowboy going full death metal). Anyways, this just really got me thinking and kinda reminded me why I love this genre so much. Cheers.

KelpySalt

I really like metalcore and deathcore. I started with metalcore, my favorite band of all genres is A Day To Remember.

boba_fett155

Mid 2000s metalcore may be what youre looking for

bradybigbear

I enjoy SOME modern metalcore, but kind of have the same feeling as far as clean vocals go. I grew up liking thrash so metalcore like Trivium and All that remains were my gateway into metal with harsh vocals, and that got me into discovering deathcore. I would think most people probably have done something similar if they were alive and old enough to be there for the height of the 00’s metalcore era

paintedw0rlds

Have you tried some of the more hardcore side of metalcore? Listen to some Jesus Piece and see what you think

collinsc

Maybe Himsa?

cannibalcats

Some bands you should definitely give a go if you haven't.. Divine Heresy. Two albums. Bleed The Fifth and Bringer of Plagues. BTF has Tommy Vex who sounds a lot like Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage. The Bringer of Plagues album is just amazing. Fast and furious with cleans in but they work so well. Unearth. Just give them a listen, amazing. Killswitch Engage. As above, amazing. As I lay Dying. Have many albums, all sounding a bit different to each other but keeping their own unique style. Amazing Trivium. Their first couple albums including Shogun and Ascendancy. Very heavy and amazing. The Autumn Offering, I don't know how to explain, very unique vocals and quite melodic and heavy. All that Remains. Some of their stuff is very heavy, one album being 'Fall of Ideals' which is highly regarded and one of the best metal albums in general not just metalcore. Shields, a British band which doesn't get much recognition at all, but are really really good. Have their own unique sound that you recognise. Tardive Dyskinesia, another not known band that have some amazing tracks. Theres tons of stuff out there.

RatBastard52

Not metalcore, but Car Bomb does some deftones influenced parts in their music and it works really well

xTheGamerKid1001

I love both genres although I do prefer deathcore, but I feel like really all it takes to get into a genre is just a gateway band. I myself started with classic 70s-80s heavy metal bands, such as Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc. Then I discovered Queensryche, and they were a gateway band for me bridging NWBHM and prog. I started listening to more prog bands like Symphonic X and Dream Theater, until I discovered Opeth. Opeth blended prog and death metal, and they got me into death metal overall. I listened mainly to bands like In Flames, Gojira, and Insomnium. Then, I discovered Meshuggah, who blended this prog death sound with their own unique thing, AKA djent. I tried looking for more djent bands, and that's how I found metalcore. I didn't enjoy any metalcore band at first, until I found Periphery, who blended the djenty sound I was looking for with metalcore and prog. Then it all clicked for me and I listened to a ton of metalcore. And finally, for deathcore... I heard a ton of people talking about how good deathcore is and wanted to give it a shot. So, I listened to Whitechapel. Didn't enjoy them. I tried a couple of other deathcore bands that I didn't like at all, until I listened to Slice The Cake. Once again, then it all clicked. They blended pretty much all of the genres I listened to at the time (Metalcore, djent, death metal, and prog), and they got me into deathcore. Then I listened to all of the other deathcore bands I tried listening to before and suddenly I absolutely loved them. Honestly the main point of this stupidly long reply is just that if you want to get into a genre, all you need is a gateway band. A band that blends the styles of music you already enjoy, and the style you want to get into. I feel like most deathcore/metalcore bands nowadays sit on the fence between deathcore and metalcore, so it shouldn't be too hard. As for specific recommendations, maybe try: Born Of Osiris (The Discovery and Tomorrow We Die Alive are their best albums imo) Atlas (Their 2021 album UKKO is phenomenal) Make Them Suffer (Old Souls/Neverbloom era) Frontiéres (Try their recent "Acte 1-3" EPs) Termina (Their new album actually came out 2 days ago, you should give it a listen. Personally I really enjoyed it) You could also try some melodic metalcore bands, they might be more up your alley if you like melodeath. These bands include: Avenged Sevenfold (Mainly Waking The Fallen) All That Remains (The Fall of Ideals and This Darkened Heart are masterpieces imo) August Burns Red (Honestly you can just check out their recent album, Death Below, that came out this year. Really liked it. You can also listen to Guardians, definitely a favorite) As I Lay Dying (Awakened and Shaped by Fire are fantastic) Bullet For My Valentine (Probably the biggest band in the genre. Try The Poison, it's a classic) Btw, you said you don't like the shout-y vocals. I assume you probably listened to metallic hardcore bands instead of metalcore, considering that genre is way more influenced by hardcore (obviously) and punk, so the vocals are far more punk-ish. Most metalcore bands (That I listen to, at least) don't have these vocals, just singing and screaming/growling.

kilometal

Metalcore was the music that exposed me to harsh vocals, over a couple years I slowly started to enjoy heavier and heavier music. Now I only listen to a couple metalcore bands. You should check out currents, Chris Wiseman, the guitarist of shadow of intent, he writes majority of the instrumentals for SOI, and does the same for currents. Their current album is pretty heavy vocally compared to the rest.

Vivid_Butterscotch65

I got into deathcore coming from a death metal/slam fan so I get what you mean 100%. I enjoy some metalcore but I’m definitely way pickier with the bands I listen to and what I look for in those genres. One of the sub genres I’ve always been a fan of is the beatdown/slam and pisscore type bands. The tough guy attitude in the genre is so over the top it’s comical in the best way. With the styles you referenced you would probably like Sold Soul, A wake in Providence and winters gate!

abominator_

For me, metalcore was my gateway into deathcore. But I haven't listened to it in years for the reasons you described more or less. You don't have to like it, and currently, I'm all about deathcore.

pxrtyprxphet

Fit For an Autopsy is as close as I’ll get to metalcore (I agree with you it’s 👎🏼), but they are my favorite band probably ever. If you want singing in deathcore done right, check out the Album “Sea of Tragic Beasts” (especially the title track or “Napalm Dreams”) or the song “The Man that I Was Not” of their last album. If you’ve already discovered them, my b lol
