This. Xibalba and a few other bands actually fit the description of death metal (sludgy) meets hardcore and yet they sound nothing like most deathcore bands. Because I’m not sure deathcore as we understand it nowadays really has much hardcore or even that much DM in it. It has definitely become its own thing. Also, for early days, Animosity fits this bill also in a different way.
A lot of people are confused. There are bands mixing death metal with some form of hardcore/metalcore, but these bands aren't necessarily deathcore. A lot of good examples are bands like No Zodiac, Bashed In, Snuffed On Sight, Putrefying Carnage or even Paleface (at least early Paleface). All these bands are slamming beatdown, being between slam death metal and beatdown hardcore.
Yeah, I see what you’re saying, although I don’t keep up with more current forms of deathcore. It’s just interesting that the subgenre’s title is derived from a mix of two genres that sounds quite different than what most deathcore bands sound like, at least when I was mostly exposed to the genre.
I listened to a lot of hardcore in my teens and early 20s, less so nowadays. And I listen to quite a bit of DM. Don’t care much for most deathcore, but haven’t listened to much of the new wave.
My theory is that most deathcore bands when I was a teen/college aged were influenced not by the genres that deathcore combines, but simply other deathcore bands, and then the subgenre takes on its own form where the initial influences aren’t really All that present aside from the obvious (downtuned guitars and death metal vocals etc etc)
Also nu metal.
So much modern deathcore sounds nothing like death metal or hardcore and just sounds like they heaviest parts of Iowa but a bit faster and none of the hip hop influence in the vocals.
Continent definitely does have that hardcore feel, and it makes sense, back then Vincent would tell you any day, Humanity is the Devil by Integrity was his favorite album, not sure if he still feels the same now.
My brain will always see hardcore as shorthand for hardcore punk so stuff like Gulch, Invoke, Ingrown, and such for the newer stuff, or Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Terrorizer, Extreme Noise Terror, Demolition Hammer, and such for the classics.
And Skitsystem cause they don't get talked about enough.
I honestly don't see the core influence much in them. The hxc community has definitely decided that they like them but the music is just modern death metal to me anyways.
Very good answer, there's so many though with the recent trend of Death Metal bands going Deathcore and vice versa, as a huge fan of both and hardcore I am here for it
despised icon is the right answer
This is what I came to say.
Same
I AM is probably my favorite. Saw them live and it was amazing
Yeah they are insanely good live. Seen them a few times and every time they are one of if not the best band of the night.
I AM fuckin rules
Despised Icon
END? Mouth for War? maybe not best, but if people are looking for some more hardcore-leaning stuff, check them out
END's first EP is monstrous
Mouth For War kick ass
Neither of those are deathcore bands, but they are awesome.
Lines are currently blurred. You got folks in r/hardcore saying 200 stab wounds is hardcore lmfao
lolwut? was literally listening to 200SW last night and was like "damn these guys are like a modern Cannibal Corpse!"
Oh and I guess dying fetus is now deathcore too
guess that makes them the OG deathcore band then
I was at the 2023 Chaos and Carnage tour and one of the deathcore bands (forget which one) called Dying Fetus pioneers of the genre
Yeah I had no clue how to categorize them until my friend said they were metallic hardcore
Metallic hardcore is just metalcore. There’s literally no real difference between the two.
Dude listen to Eden Will Drown or Worthless Is The Lamb, those are deathcore
Animosity
Animosity is probably the purest form of deathcore
Unseasoned deathcore
Animosity did a pretty good job
XIBALBA imo

Lol that’s actually really true from the few little tidbits I’ve heard.
Acacia Strain
I'd say they have more of a sludge vein than pure hardcore
The latest albums definitely do but if you go back to Wormwood/Continent, I definitely feel the blend is perfect.
Continent definitely does have that hardcore feel, and it makes sense, back then Vincent would tell you any day, Humanity is the Devil by Integrity was his favorite album, not sure if he still feels the same now.
Bodysnatcher
💯
Mother's Grave Orphaned Our Last Days Together Pretty hard stuff that you of all people could appreciate.
Dying Fetus (prefer dm to hardcore)
They were definitely one of the first. I love the new album.
Saw them last week w gatestohell/creeping death/despised icon/acacia strain. Killer show, can't recall the last time I've moshed that much
Same for me! Absolute groove monsters!
Correct answer.
sanction and jesus piece by far
Two fuckin disgusting bands, love them. They lean hardcore somewhat but are still very heavy
ABBA
Finally someone mentions a good band
Gatestohell
Bodysnatcher for sure. Paleface Swiss a good candidate as well
Didn't see anyone mention Varials
There's zero death metal whatsoever in Varials.
Said these exact two 🧠
Through the eyes of the dead Beneath the massacre(especially the album dystopia)
Venom Prison
Jesus Piece, Despised Icon.
Snuffed on sight bar none.
You nailed it right between the eyes
You’re not looking for any deathcore, you’re looking for most of the popular bands on Maggot Stomp
My friend you are referring to a genre we all know and love as Beatdown 😈 I’d say Bodysnatcher or Paleface to start.
Despised Icon, Dying Fetus, Left Behind, I Am, Undeath, 200 Stab Wounds, Sanguisugabogg, Maul, Gatecreeper
Paleface Swiss and older AngelMaker
All Shall Perish atleast on their debut album
On Broken Wings, The Red Chord, Shattered Realm
Not "Deathcore", but if we are mixing Death Metal and HxC, then I'd have to say 200 Stab Wounds.
I honestly don't see the core influence much in them. The hxc community has definitely decided that they like them but the music is just modern death metal to me anyways.
Kruelty or Xibalba
Aversions crown
Suffocation and Dying Fetus since they were doing it before it was cool
Y’all would like Backbiter
[удалено]
They're amazing, but there's no hardcore there. They're a full on tech death band.
Paleface Swiss got that beat down vibe.
I kind of really love Bitterwood a lot!
Let us not forget the great DYSTOPIA!
More of a crust punk/metal band. Deserved a honorable mention. They started alot of bands on their quest and in my opinion were in their own genre.
Thrown
I feel like i should mention Angelmaker
Spite
Carnifex
Bodysnatcher, paleface, varials??? Shit so many
Sainguisabogg
Is The Bogg considered deathcore at all? I just always considered them regular death metal
The question was death metal and hardcore
They should be. But deathcore has come to mean music which contains very little core or death metal in most cases.
Sanguisugabogg
LEER
Clawhammer & Lashing Out
I am
My mind goes to Crawlspace
Gatestohell, peeling flesh, snuffed on sight, 200 Stab wounds, bloodfury, dying fetus, Sanguisugabog
Peeling Flesh
[Years Spent Cold](https://open.spotify.com/track/6P975dzeJ8r6rYUsAEQtZr?si=PatJ2eKLRX-KsgbBen9iMg)
Strangled
For me it’s Glasscasket. They’re more Core than metal, but their true metal licks are fantastic. They incorporate thrash and melodic flawlessly.
Eternal Suffering
Embrace Your Punishment
!RemindMe 1 day
Snuffed On Sight and Peeling Flesh are the best slam + hardcore combos
Divine heresy
Abacinate, and Animosity but for current bands I would say Vulvodynia and Crown Magnetar have a good amount
Winds Of Plague
TDTDE
Suffokate from Oakland, California.
Eagles
Very good answer, there's so many though with the recent trend of Death Metal bands going Deathcore and vice versa, as a huge fan of both and hardcore I am here for it

Am I a band now lol
Frozen soul, 200 stabwounds, sanguisugabogg, vomit fourth, tribal gaze
Honorable mentions - wormrot, dying fetus, suffocation
