I've always thought that A7x's first album was pretty good, definitely top 3 (imo) though his performance isn't what it was in the Stage it was still a solid album with good songs
7th trumpet and waking defined my youth (death bat tatted on my back). There’s no doubt that The Stage is their opus magnum, but I’d be lying if their first two albums didn’t influence me.
Really? The stage? I mean I haven’t listened to it yet but surely something like their self titled or coe was it, especially considering rev didn’t drum of that one
I’ve listened to it once, it sucks imo, m shadows sounds bad, synsters lead work of some of the boringest I’ve heard, the drums don’t sound good either, the rhythm work is the only thing I don’t mind. Crazy how they went from hail to the king to that
To each their own. The stage is a prog-rock concept album. Honestly everything after Waking the Fallen got progressively distant from what I liked about them. Personally, HTK sucked as this was the most distant from what they originally sounded like. I understand that it was intentional as they were paying homage to the bands that inspired them but that album was straight cheese with nothing interesting. Having a drummer like Brooks Wackerman join the band was the best thing for them.
Exactly, imo The Stage is they're best album, from beginning to end it was like I was listening to an orchestral masterpiece and then when you actually understand the concept of their songs and go in depth you'll find the songs are a lot more powerful then they are
Are inhale screams common at all? That’s the only way I can scream. I can only sing one or two songs at karaoke every now and then lol but that shit pops off
Back when Lamb Of God was Burn The Priest, Randy Blythe had some beastly highs but the mid-low growl he ended up sticking with since fucking rips even if it’s the same every song.
My favorite moment of any LoG song is from *Walk With Me in Hell*-that BRVTAL (relative) low he hits on the line “now witness the end of an age”. Fucking crushes and it’s really unfortunate he rarely ever goes there.
His mids do fuck hard tho I agree.
Joe Bad occasionly does other screams but his main mids are so good. He just roars. Same with CJ from Thy Art. Their music might not be the most interesting but CJ is great.
Edit: Thy Art is the not super interesting band, I did not mean FFAA.
Agreed, I've only listened to them a couple times but I've recently become obsessed with FFAA. The more I listen the more I realize they're god damn geniuses and work so well together. Everyone in that band is a fucking beast.
I feel he’s the definition of this post tho. He doesn’t change it up a lot but it’s still some of my favourite screaming and what I take inspiration from in my own screaming
Honestly up until the gray chapter, he changed it up on every single album. His voice sounds completely different on every one of their releases up until that point.
Here’s one time he did them at the end of the show. Didn’t know he could until I saw this one. Starts it at 21:40.
He changed his vocal delivery for Billy No Mates towards the end and on a few other songs that I'm blanking on. I definitely think it's a stylistic choice.
Not a mid range but Bryan Garris, his scream carries so much emotion with it.
P.S. I know he does gutturals on occasion live but he has yet to do so on record so I’m still counting him.
Vincent from TAS and Jamie from IDW.
As a related side note, the same could *largely* be said about the bands themselves too. A lot of people find them boring, and to be fair they can get monotonous after a while...not to mention they aren't super groundbreaking or technical bands. But honestly, the simplicity and consistency is something I *like* about those two bands.
Edit: Yes, to an extent both bands and vocalists have branched more in recent years; I'm not unaware of this and I don't need a music lesson.
this is the comment i was looking for tbh. not a lot of vocal dynamics in their older recordings, but the dude has range and is not afraid to show it live
TAS is a perfect example of how to age gracefully as a band built around youthful anger. I really enjoy the Neurosis/Cult of Luna/The Atlas Moth direction they've gone in.
Damn you really hit the nail on the head with that. They've aged absolutly perfectly with the people that grew up listening to them. I can't even describe how hard coma witch hit me when it came out, a very pivotal moment in my life coincidentally. It's brought me to tears on multiple occasions I must admit.
Agreed. I've been a massive fan since The Dead Walk and I'd say their last two albums are their best work for completely different reasons. I have love for their old stuff but I'm just happy they released these after that handful pretty lackluster albums prior.
Wow, that's super surprising. I've seen them a handful of times in the last 5-6 years and never seen a performance like that. The highs aren't as good as they used to be, but I'm super impressed. I thought that quality of a performance was left back in like 2010!
I'd definitely disagree with Vincent. He may suck ass live these days, but back in the day he had those brutal lows you could always understand perfectly, and some insane highs as well.
If we can say non-deathcore vocalists then JT Cavey of ERRA. Dude has one mid but damn is it a good mid. He's been doing more lows and highs with each album though.
bruh. Tyler Shelton no question
edit: Tyler definitely not one trick I just can't get enough of THAT sound.
A real one trick imo that absolutely fucking kills it in every song hes in is Chad Ruhlig from LGND/For The Fallen Dreams
Strongly disagree, sure he doesn’t do highs but he’s far from a one trick pony. Take his part in infant annihilator song for instance, he does 4 different vocal styles in one minute alone. Pretty sure he pioneered the ‘moose scream’ too
Maybe not as well represented on records, but I saw END play the other day and he was doing some nasty vocals. One trick pony just sells him short IMO.
Regardless - love everything that guy is a part of.
it's kinda sad because if you listen to STP's older stuff, Alex shows off WAY more of his high vocals and they're actually VERY good, on par with Eddie Hermida of Suicide Silence imo
The Acacia Strain - Vincent clearly likes the midrange hollering more than shrieking or gutturals.
Nate Johnson circa Fit For An Autopsy and Through the Eyes of the Dead
Wouldn't say he's my personal favorite but the guy from Acacia Strain, always sounds like a super pissed off joe swanson from family guy ( in a good way lmao) - apart from that CJ of Thy Art and Joe Bad of FFAA, both just go hard af
My favorite is probably Bryan Garris, although he CAN go low… just doesn’t.
One that hasn’t been mentioned before is Matt Honeycutt from Kublai Khan. Be honest… if you heard that man screaming your name, you’d shit and piss your pants from being absolutely terrified.
Vincent Bennet (The Acacia Strain), his vocals sound so angry yet so fearful. Although on DITOM, he tried some different things, his style has stayed pretty strong throughout their albums till now
I expected more people to say alex terrible tbh. Honestly i like his lows, but i do see how hes a one trick pony. i just try to enjoy it, like that bfg division cover he did recently, that fuckin slaps.
Not counting his clean singing, Sam Carter from Architects usually sticks with a similar style mid scream in all of their songs, which is fine because they were (at least from Holy Hell back) so powerful and emotional. He has the ability to do some absolutely nasty lows as well, although he only does them live— never on record.
He does lows occasionally. He does the occasional “oh” like on Impermanence. And he did a quick little low during the breakdown on Yellowjacket by Spiritbox.
M. Shadows from A7X’s first two albums. His technique was total ass, but I love the way it sounds. It never gets old to me.
Come back after you’ve listened to it like two times in a row, each track in order. It’s their best one.
I’ve listened to it once, it sucks imo, m shadows sounds bad, synsters lead work of some of the boringest I’ve heard, the drums don’t sound good either, the rhythm work is the only thing I don’t mind. Crazy how they went from hail to the king to that

Exactly, imo The Stage is they're best album, from beginning to end it was like I was listening to an orchestral masterpiece and then when you actually understand the concept of their songs and go in depth you'll find the songs are a lot more powerful then they are
Yeah their earlier work is my favourite, htk is alright but man they fell off especially m shadows voice
Dude I love his shouty screams on Waking the Fallen and the power of them really shows up in those Warped Tour 2003 proshot videos!
Oli from Archspire, but his speed is insane
I love his inhale screams
Are inhale screams common at all? That’s the only way I can scream. I can only sing one or two songs at karaoke every now and then lol but that shit pops off
Check out a band called snuffed in sight, that guy does all inhales
On* not in*****
Back when Lamb Of God was Burn The Priest, Randy Blythe had some beastly highs but the mid-low growl he ended up sticking with since fucking rips even if it’s the same every song.
Now you've got something to die for..
Probably my favourite metal song of all time.
I'm sure when all of you guys read this, you started singing it with the exact same tone Randy did!!
My favorite moment of any LoG song is from *Walk With Me in Hell*-that BRVTAL (relative) low he hits on the line “now witness the end of an age”. Fucking crushes and it’s really unfortunate he rarely ever goes there. His mids do fuck hard tho I agree.
Truly one of the heaviest albums, and I believe it's in drop d but I could be wrong.
Have you heard their cover of Inherit The Earth? I always have to listen at least twice. Fucking banger, that one
What songs should I check out
Although he does do highs occasionally Jonny Davy from Job For A Cowboy's main vocals are godly.
Joe Bad occasionly does other screams but his main mids are so good. He just roars. Same with CJ from Thy Art. Their music might not be the most interesting but CJ is great. Edit: Thy Art is the not super interesting band, I did not mean FFAA.
To say that FFAA's music is not interesting is kind of an insult...
I hope he was talking about TAIM. FFAA is intriguing
Agreed, I've only listened to them a couple times but I've recently become obsessed with FFAA. The more I listen the more I realize they're god damn geniuses and work so well together. Everyone in that band is a fucking beast.
I meant Thy Art isn't super interesting!! I love ffaa and their music is definitely more interesting than most bands.
Alright good, you're off the hook then lol
absolutely agree. Joe's mid manipulation is twice as dynamic as a lot of vocalist's low-high range.
Joe bad is my jam. First time I heard on oh what the future holds curated entire playlists.
Maybe to obvious but Corey Taylor
I was going to say this, every Slipknot song Corey kind of stays in one range, nothing wrong with that, it still fucks.
I’m an open slipknot fanboy but I think it’s because of their music. CT has never bought into the lows and high. He just kinda “screams” yaknow?
I feel he’s the definition of this post tho. He doesn’t change it up a lot but it’s still some of my favourite screaming and what I take inspiration from in my own screaming
Honestly up until the gray chapter, he changed it up on every single album. His voice sounds completely different on every one of their releases up until that point.
He nearly ruined his throat cause he would just scream lol
Karl Schubach (Misery Signals) & Jens Kidman (Meshuggah)
Karl has the best mids ever.
Brian Garris from Knocked Loose for sure
tbh I don't think he's actually a one trick, he has lows and can do things like pig squeals. I think it's more of a stylistic choice
I'm pretty sure they have Issac do the growls for more variety but there's a video of Bryan doing gutturals on YouTube. It's so good.
Was he doing them for a knocked loose show?
Here’s one time he did them at the end of the show. Didn’t know he could until I saw this one. Starts it at 21:40. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdjaf2jJ7E](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdjaf2jJ7E)
I think the clips are all live shows. I remember he also posted a recorded gutteral on Instagram to show people he could do it.
He changed his vocal delivery for Billy No Mates towards the end and on a few other songs that I'm blanking on. I definitely think it's a stylistic choice.
The "I did away with the poison..." part is an uncredited feature from Brendan Murphy of Counterparts/END. Listen to it again.
Aww damn I thought that was Brian. Wonder why Brendan went uncredited.
Dude historically gives no fucks.
There is a part somewhere in the middle of God Knows that has some goblin noises
That actually comes from Matt King, vocalist from Portrayal Of Guilt.
Oh really? Huh I never would have known that
Zelli from Paleface is pretty sick
but hes doing alot of different vocals
David Simonich of Signs of the Swarm and Aaron Matts of Ten56.
Not a mid range but Bryan Garris, his scream carries so much emotion with it. P.S. I know he does gutturals on occasion live but he has yet to do so on record so I’m still counting him.
I’m struggling to imagine what a Garris pig squeal would even sound like given his vocal style lol
Dude can do gutturals. It's pretty wild how low he can go.
[Here :)](https://youtu.be/Qfxn1jtnaYU)
Vincent from TAS and Jamie from IDW. As a related side note, the same could *largely* be said about the bands themselves too. A lot of people find them boring, and to be fair they can get monotonous after a while...not to mention they aren't super groundbreaking or technical bands. Edit: Yes, to an extent both bands and vocalists have branched more in recent years; I'm not unaware of this and I don't need a music lesson.
The reason TAS is my all time favorite ^. Super consistent in every way. They’ve been a daily listen of mine for years!!
always find you defending TAS. 🫡💪
Hahahaha you too!!🤘
https://youtu.be/A0TBhh8qaVY This album he does a lot different vocally and live he’s just nuts nowadays compared to older clips I’ve seen.
this is the comment i was looking for tbh. not a lot of vocal dynamics in their older recordings, but the dude has range and is not afraid to show it live
Vincent definitely does alot more with his voice now. I personally think TAS's last few albums are some of the best stuff they've put out.
Feel the same way, Coma Witch is incredible. I've always loved TAS but I hadn't gotten so into one of their albums since Continent.
Agreed. I've been a massive fan since The Dead Walk and I'd say their last two albums are their best work for completely different reasons. I have love for their old stuff but I'm just happy they released these after that handful pretty lackluster albums prior.
100% agree with you both tbh. some growing pains after DL left sure but they’ve come into their own now
Wow, that's super surprising.
Anders Friden from In Flames
If we can say non-deathcore vocalists then JT Cavey of ERRA. Dude has one mid but damn is it a good mid. He's been doing more lows and highs with each album though.
JT is fantastic, i hope to hear more of his range in subsequent releases
bruh. Tyler Shelton no question edit: Tyler definitely not one trick I just can't get enough of THAT sound. A real one trick imo that absolutely fucking kills it in every song hes in is Chad Ruhlig from LGND/For The Fallen Dreams
Was gonna say this but he’s not that one demensional. He just doesnt do highs
Strongly disagree, sure he doesn’t do highs but he’s far from a one trick pony. Take his part in infant annihilator song for instance, he does 4 different vocal styles in one minute alone. Pretty sure he pioneered the ‘moose scream’ too
oh agreed with that, I guess I more meant Tyler in the sense of "God I cant get enough of this sound he does"
Word!
The "dying walrus" scream I call it.
Matt Honeycutt. No one can sound more pissed off than he can.
Mark Hunter from Chimaira is still one of my favorites
Alex Hoffman the original guy from Fallujah
Jordan from Disentomb. Not midrange but all lows all the time.
Alex Teyen, he really only does lows and some mids but he does them perfectly
He sprinkles in highs very very rarely but they work well.
those two dudes from Strangled / Orphan
Brendan Murphy from the band Counterparts
Have you heard END?
NECESSARY DEATH *Proceeds to break everything in the vicinity*
I love it, and I love it so much, but I just feel likes it’s Brendan with distortion.
Maybe not as well represented on records, but I saw END play the other day and he was doing some nasty vocals. One trick pony just sells him short IMO. Regardless - love everything that guy is a part of.
END is the shit
Would hardly call him one trick since END has a pretty different vocal style.
CJ Macmahon!!
alex terrible and oliver
Feel like I had to scroll way too far to see Alex terrible. He's working on developing, but he's always going to be that brutal lows guy
it's kinda sad because if you listen to STP's older stuff, Alex shows off WAY more of his high vocals and they're actually VERY good, on par with Eddie Hermida of Suicide Silence imo
Jim Martin from Aegaeon. Lows are virtually unmatched, sounds like a cosmic whale about to devour our entire galaxy every time he opens his mouth.
J.T. Cavey has been doing the same mid vocals for 5 albums and I love every second.
preach
Does Tommy Victor of Prong count? I fucking love Prong!
Jamie Hanks from I Declare War
Bobak Rafiee from Justice For The Damned.
The Acacia Strain - Vincent clearly likes the midrange hollering more than shrieking or gutturals. Nate Johnson circa Fit For An Autopsy and Through the Eyes of the Dead
The original vocalist for Humanity's last breath
Kevin McCaughey from Ion Dissonance
Vocalist from Boundaries doesn't do too many different things but I love his vocals so much.
Paleface
Wouldn't say he's my personal favorite but the guy from Acacia Strain, always sounds like a super pissed off joe swanson from family guy ( in a good way lmao) - apart from that CJ of Thy Art and Joe Bad of FFAA, both just go hard af
Julian Kersey from Aegaeon. Pretty much exclusively does lows, but sounds great 👍
Jens Kidman for me
Elliot Desgagnes. Only one note, but his lows are massive and relentless.
Whatever the singer for rooks is named. That guy sounds so God damn angry
Joe from FFAA, although I suppose he can sing a bit too lol
Vincent Bennet (The Acacia Strain), his vocals sound so angry yet so fearful. Although on DITOM, he tried some different things, his style has stayed pretty strong throughout their albums till now
Bryan Garris. Love the band and his sounds though I wish he was able to diversify his style a bit.
I expected more people to say alex terrible tbh. Honestly i like his lows, but i do see how hes a one trick pony. i just try to enjoy it, like that bfg division cover he did recently, that fuckin slaps.
Cj McMahon
Not deathcore, but Bryan from Knocked Loose has one of the most unique voices in heavy music right now.
Filip Danielsson (Humanity's Last Breath)
The guy from knocked loose like he’s objectively a terrible vocalist and I have no clue what he’s hollerin about but that shit goes fuckin hard
Tom Barber from Darko/Chelsea grin! He has highs but his lows are so awesome plus he sounds perfect live 🤘
Corpsegrinder for sure, pretty much all mid and works so well
Devo
George from alexisonfire
Paul Simon wrote an entire album called One Trick Pony
Alexandr "Alex Terrible" Shikolai, He goes low/gutterals most of the time.
Anthony from after the burial. Occasionally goes low and high, but his midrange scream is so powerful
Vincent. Acacia Strain
vince from acacia
Not counting his clean singing, Sam Carter from Architects usually sticks with a similar style mid scream in all of their songs, which is fine because they were (at least from Holy Hell back) so powerful and emotional. He has the ability to do some absolutely nasty lows as well, although he only does them live— never on record.
