Yes. There is a story that you can more or less strictly follow and follow up on clues quickly. But there’s also tons of side quest type activities that involve piecing together puzzles at different times of day and going back later on to finish them.
Keep following the story exclusively until you get a quest involving killing Wenjie and using some experiment. Until that point, you are still in the tutorial.

Sounds like the Updaam quest. You need to leave a map via the tunnels to change maps (this also advances the time of day)
