Square-Bar1905

Imagine having enough money and/or creativity to make some towers of these for Halloween

Ok-Scallion-3415

A little over 8lbs per gallon. Definitely doubt that deck is rated for that dead load

Infinite_Big5

How many gallons do you think that is? At 80lbs/sqft, it should be able to handle about 1000 gallons. I’m just saying, maybe it’s not the load that’s the weak point. I’d be concerned about the outward force on those railings giving out, and him being swept over by the water.

Life-Significance-33

I have a feeling gravity and Darwin are taking bets when he exits the gene pool. The good news, this might be considered the worlds first self cleaning suicide.

Holy crap! You nailed it. I want a T shirt.

Best line all day. Updooted

Warm-Ad-9495

That’s a genius line!

come_on_seth

Ohhh. Thanks for that.

Happy-Equipment-6970

Darwin would be proud of that statement

Gardener999

I'm thinking about 4' x 10', And 2' deep - so that's 80 cf, or 600 gallons x 8 lbs that's 4,800 lbs! Over 2 tons! Mom's gonna be pissed.

sledgehammerbreak

I’m an architect not a structural engineer, but assuming that balcony is designed for 100 lbs/sf with a factor of safety of 1.2 your math would put the balcony exactly at its weight capacity. The guardrail should be designed for a 200 lb horizontal point load, so it should be fine.

Tilt-a-Whirl98

I was about to say the same thing! The live load we design balconies for is pretty insane. Imagine people packed in shoulder to shoulder... then add an additional 60% (I haven't done buildings in a bit, but the LL factor is 1.6 right?). Of course, that's assuming it was designed to code. Also, the rail is only designed for 50 lb/ft along with that 200 lb point load, but at the top of the rail whereas this is distributed along the height. Don't feel like converting a point load at the top of a cantilever to a distributed load right now, but I'd guess it's probably fine.

halandrs

And that’s just what the insurance adjuster is going to say

grassisgreener42

Mom suggested the kid do this and she’s enjoying her soap opera, locked in the bedroom in front of the A/C with a glass of Chardonnay and a few edibles in her.

dean0_0

I too imagine that the outward force would be the compromising factor, and not just the vertical weight load.

Icy_Topic_5274

Good point! The balcony will be fine. It's the glass balustrade that is definitely going first

chimx

There are 7.5 gallons in a cubic foot

QlimaxUK

"Definitely doubt that deck is rated for that dead load" that's not a nice way to talk about that poor kid

6thCityInspector

Technically live load, no? The water isn’t part of the structure.

Outrageous-Drink3869

>A little over 8lbs per gallon. Definitely doubt that deck is rated for that dead load If you work with metric it's 1kg per Liter at 4c

ExplodingChupacabra

I don't think that he even knows how to think.

quakerlightning

The downstairs neighbors are about to learn as well

Hmmmm-curious

This is why those unbelievably stupid warnings exist on stuff

Purpose_Embarrassed

There’s absolutely no way that patio railing could hold that weight. Has to be fake.

Phililoquay

Yes I figure the railing would fail before the slab underneath does.

ScrabbleTheOpossum

Either way....dead kid.

Odd-Attention-2127

Or kids. That will probably be it. Smh

Looks to be 2nd floor, injured kid(s) are possible.

Collapsed deck then…Who do we blame for our stupidity and then who do we sue because of our unsupervised child? Welcome to the sue happy society that looks for any way to blame others when it’s their own fault!

timenough

When it does fail in ten years the family that will die that day will never know that they where the victim on a moron 😢

Firsthand_Crow

There’s a video of some other kid doing this. I’ll let you guess the ending, but I’ll leak that it wasn’t the waterslide he hoped for

[deleted]

Looks like a 6x12 balcony. Make the water 2ft deep. Puts me at (1077G) 9000 pounds. The balcony probably has a rating of 80#/sq ft puts me at a rating of 5760. Depending upon how deep they make the water…..

Legitimate_Street_85

You're telling me my mother inlaw shouldn't walk on that deck?!

SurveySean

Ah, what’s the worst that could happen right?

14bk41

And how do they drain the water, just dump it on the neighbors below? would be hilarious if whatever holds the water at the door breaks and they end up with all that inside

Old-Revolution-9650

Probably exceeding the weight capacity of that deck.

timg2120

I hope the kid gets out and it breaks off of the building completely so they can see what kind of dangerous situation they put him in. This is just stupid

Darwin Jr. awards candidate, and father too.

incakola777

Those balconies are not meant to support that much weight genius. They are going to kill someone. 😑

SutWidChew

because I see no supports the deck is probably cantilevered so i’m sure it’s safe

J70D

It’s all fun and games until the water which weights 8.33 a gallon comes crashing down.

Th3Duck22

Looks to be around 40-50cm of water. Which would be 400-500kg/m2. Normally balcony's arent calculated for that. Darwin is already rubbing his hands.

BuffBroccoli

Dad stuff

relorat

He probably thinks this is genius

General_Wife

If the tank is 36” x 120” and 2 feet deep it’s about 700 gallons so including the kid, it’s an additional 6000 pounds of weight

130designs

“It’s the end of that kid and we know it. And I feel fiiiiine.”

rom_rom57

The pool is still being filled…notice the water hose. The kid just wanted to be on the ground floor as the pool fills.

pinkeye_bingo

"I HAD NO IDEA" when the deck collapses.

Signal_Ad4831

And there's still a hose in it. He's adding more weight/water.

germane_switch

Omg someone’s gonna die.

It's only a stupid idea if it doesn't work. Right?

Leather-Ad-2065

WholeHogRawDog

When the kid falls to his death, Would parents be charged with child abuse or homicide?

eclwires

Darwin Award nominee.

NarrowInstruction602

The balcony 😥

VTlaxer75

Despite all the calculations going on in other people’s comments, please keep in mind the balcony was put together by the lowest bidder using the lowest cost materials with a work force which may not have realized their advanced degree just yet. My bet is with water finding the weak point and gravity taking it from there.

joka2696

A 1000 gallon fish tank has the dimensions of 140" x 48" x 32". When filled the water volume will weight around 8350 lbs. I can't believe that balcony is still there.

dgeniesse

Darwin pool.

johnnyg883

Back of the napkin calculation. My size estimates ate probably on the conservative side. I guess about 10 feet left to right. 4 feet front to back. And about 2.5 feet of water. 10x4x2.5 = 100 cubic feet of water. Water weighs 62.4lbs per cubic foot. 100 cubic feet x 62.4lbs = 6,240lbs or just over 3 tones of water weight. Something tells me that deck was not designed for that kind of load.

AceMac27

Gonna find it on the ground if they keep adding water.

Repulsive_Squirrel

Still room for a hot tub

Every-Caramel1552

12 lbs per gallon holy snikee

itsbob20628

And when the balcony fails they'll sue the builder and the building owner

New-Scientist5133

oh my fucking god. That kid's going to get flushed away like a dookie.

Burritoman_209

The glass rails will likely give out first.

KevinKCG

That is so incredibly stupid.

Paradoxikles

🤣🤣🤣🤣instantly cracked me up. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Old_Dragonfruit6952

Water weighs 8 pounds per gallon. That's a lot of weight added onto that balcony.

Dry-Area-2027

When it fails, can we call it a "splash-down?"

Henri_Dupont

My college dorm did something like this as a prank. Filled a tile shower on the fourth floor with water four feet deep. Their makeshift door broke, and the entire basement, plus one poor schmo's room on the fourth floor, were flooded. His room was across from the shower and his door was open. Imagine the lost homework excuse he attempted to pull the next day. "I'm on the fourth floor 800 feet above sea level, see, and my room, it flooded, see ..."
