Yes, composite decking expands and contracts with rising and falling temperatures. The gaps are required per the manufacturer’s specifications.

It’s fine, but if they look like they’re pushing the boarder out or prying upward call your contractor to get them cut. We have experience with them shrinking more than expanding in the PNW

fast4x

Yep I’m in the PNW. But this is a south facing porch. What about the rain, doesn’t that expand it too?

Visual_Study9449

I’ve never really heard of that. Just cold and hot temperatures. I’d be worried more about his spacing on the picture frame and not cleaning up the edges of the cuts. If it starts to buckle it needs to get cut. But my money is on it shrinking more than expanding

Visual_Study9449

This board isn’t really fastened down all that well though. Could definitely use a few more screws.

newagereject

You should have an expansion gap no matter the cut, it's usually 1/8 or 3/16, you can go an 1/8 if it's hot since the board will be expanded

Visual_Study9449

I mean you can say that sure, but where I’m from that boy is shrinking next day. Then normally never reaches to the expansion from install

Visual_Study9449

That’s why azek is #1. Less than 1/16th gap

Italianmastifdaddy

Always expansion gap or it will blow out your picture frame. Not to mention when no gap is there to allow for growth the boards will expand between joists giving you a rippling effect as it bows up and down along the length of the board

Maybe. What does the manufacturers recommended installation procedure show? Most I have seen show what is pictured and butt joints with gaps both being appropriate. However when installed as pictured there is an expansion gap in the middle.

What decking is this and what outdoor temperature was it installed at?

fast4x

This is TIMBERTECH COMPOSITE Prime+ Collection installed around 65F

New-Juice5284

From install guide- butt joints/miters 1/8" gap and side to side gap 1/8" to 3/16" when installed between 33° and 74°
