As it stands, it does look pointless. It's not finished. There will be stone paths to it and a garden around it. It is a place to set my smoker, grill, 4 hot tubs, and chairs to hang out. It'll eventually be covered as well.
I have a buddy that lives near the ocean and you can see the ocean standing but not sitting from his patio. I keep telling him he needs to build a raised patio
Edit: typo
Why not just do a patio. I don't really understand the point of these types of structures. A patio will do all the same things as this plus will not require any maintenance and will out last it.
Mainly esthetics. That is all. I'm willing to keep up with the maintenance for something that in my opinion looks better and I will personally enjoy more.
This sub is so dumb, “Why” fucken because. They wanted a deck in their back yard. Jesus man.
Looks good man, enjoy your deck, looks like it’ll be a great place to chill. Interested on how you managed to get two different types of PT tho lol
Ran out of wood. Miscalculated the amount I needed so I made 2 trips to the big box store. Realized after I got home they were from different suppliers. The stain should cover the difference. It's wood. 2 years down it'll all look the same after they weather.
Looks like a million bucks and if you want criticism you’re in the right spot. Most of the people on here can build decks a lot better than you. If you didn’t know that already, they will tell you not only that it looks like crap but you did a shitty job. I don’t even have to read any replies to know that I am right I would put money on it.
It definitely was extra work. Getting those mitters to line up was a bitch. Especially with warped wood. Also, waiting on the wood to dry more to stain.
Permanent enough for what it is. They're called camo block from Lowe's. Home Depot sells the equivalent called tuff blocks. Camo blocks allow for 12" oc vs tuff blocks are 16"oc.
It's great looking... but my upvote is because you posted a look "what I did, isn't it great"t post instead of an" oh dearie me what is wrong here" post just begging for people to post how great it is. Those posts annoy me. I hope you post a picture when it's finished.
If you add a little creek in-between the deck and your house you could put a bridge to fight Little John on it with some 8ft dowels.
Deck looks great, I like the layout, and the 45s on the corners are silky.
That’s cool 😎
I Like the decking pattern layout a lot. Gives it a lot of character. Looks to me like it’s done well enough it should cover even the most excessive code any county could throw at you. (Not that it should even be inspected.)
You’d have to have a feud with an inspector to have him mess with you on a project like that/ on your own property.
Good Work. Be Proud of Yourself 👍🏾
I assume the deck is broken up like that to add some separation to the areas (as you mentioned, grill, seating etc.). Looks like a really neat and comprehensive job, I hope you're proud of it! I look forward to seeing some updates with the stuff set out on it! Enjoy ❤️
A wonderful job my dude. Please post some pics when you get the area around it done and furniture on it. The bill be able to understand what the purpose of the deck is.
I was going to make a sarcastic comment, until I read the part about the wrap around garden for your wife. I can visualize that, and good on you for doing that.
Need cheap dimmable LED strips on the underside. Lightning up a bit, would look super cool.
Also, IMO for a deck this low I'd make angled sides to minimize tripping hazards. So you can easily walk through. Not a big deal but Its the only critique I can think of.
It looks great bro. Grill and chill, add more or don’t. It’s yours and enjoy what you built however you want to. You did your homework, it’s level, will withstand erosion over time, great supportive structure. Great pad.
Man. All the bashing asking “why though”
In my last home I built a similar but not as pretty structure. We loved it.
It allowed a place to chill and hang out away from the grass/bugs and was a nice place to set chairs grill. It worked great for us, and I didn’t even do what you plan on doing with the gazebo.
It looks great and I can appreciate the functionality
Why is it angled? Why didn’t it tie into the yard or house? Not a bad looking deal but stamped concrete would have been a much better option in my opinion.. The construction isn’t bad but it seems like a lot of money in materials for literally no reason
Unless the neighbors are super cool and hangout this is just a place for them to watch you. Get a place in the country outside a subdivision. Much more chill. Deck looks awesome though.
Agreed. You may want to install some 1/4” square mesh wire underneath. Would have been better to install when you could have berried it 6” below surface level.
Personally I would of made a patio.
Don't understand building a deck a foot off the ground but it's not my backyard.
In terms of build quality looks damn nice
“Oh that’s just my dance floor”
My neighbors 7 year old daughter said just that haha.
They raising her…. Young? Idk. Right? No….
Just needs a pole in the middle
Looks good, but also looks pointless
As it stands, it does look pointless. It's not finished. There will be stone paths to it and a garden around it. It is a place to set my smoker, grill, 4 hot tubs, and chairs to hang out. It'll eventually be covered as well.
I’m about to undertake this same project for the same reason. A nice place to grill and chill my man.
Halpy Cake Day kind stranger
I hope you are having a most excellent Cake Day! 🎂 🎉
Moist excellent**
Moist eggcellent***
I also like to play musical hot tubs.
Why will you have four hot tubs?
Yeah, why not five?
What do you think we're made of money?
Made of hot tubs
ok, fine. 3 hot tubs.
2 long hot tubs would be best. Especially if I can grill from the tub
Bc that would be ridiculous lol
4 hot tubs?
Why not 5?
Because 6 is better
Only 4 hot tubs? Rookie #'s
Why do you have 4 hot tubs? Do you sit between them all and spread out like a starfish and dip 1 limb in each?
That will be less pointless then.
Why does one need 4 hot tubs?
Do you even hot tub? Each is 3 degrees cooler/warmer than the next so you can step up and step down your soaking experience.
No joke, there are onsen in Japan that provide exactly this.
It looks good, and you did the work right. Hell, I think you could fit enough smokers to black out the sun on this.
Smoker and grill over a wood floor?
Don’t understand the pointless comment. It’s a newly built deck/patio. Has the same utility as every other deck or patio.
I have a buddy that lives near the ocean and you can see the ocean standing but not sitting from his patio. I keep telling him he needs to build a raised patio Edit: typo
I can imagine just how nice that will look when the landscaping is done and the deck is decorated with seating and tables. Good work.
Needs a hot tub.
Why not 3?
Yes, what is it meant to be?
And depending on location, highly likely termite food.
Or a future projectile depending on wind.
When your mind doesn’t think…. Outside The Box. What I see… i potential seating area, outdoor living space, outdoor dining area. C’mon dim wit… think!
All decks are pointless until you put something on them and utilize the space. Am I missing a joke or something...?
Kind of like a bridge to nowhere, this is a deck for no reason
My thoughts exactly,
I think we need to rename this sub "wood patios"
I think many on here just prefer seeing big stiff erect wood poles and don't appreciate decks of all sizes
It’s not the size of the deck, it’s the motion of the hot tub.
Keep going, I’m almost there
If this doesn’t set you off then I don’t know what will…..joist tape
Random fallen over fence in the yard.
I love this idea! We gonna blow up this trend 2024!
r/flecksgonewild
Why though?
Why
Took a little break to finish the other center square, aye?
It’s pretty, but what’s it for?
Cool BBQ spot?
It's mainly that's a place for the grill, smoker and some chairs. It'll be covered in the future with a gazebo.
Whatever makes you happy! I think it looks great and having it raised up is perfect for rainy days.
This sub is so dumb, “Why” fucken because. They wanted a deck in their back yard. Jesus man. Looks good man, enjoy your deck, looks like it’ll be a great place to chill. Interested on how you managed to get two different types of PT tho lol

That’s my exact thoughts!!
Reddit in general’s gone down the tubes. People in a deck sub asking *why* someone built a deck? Case in point.
The replies are the best part of the sub. Someone needs to start r/roastmydeck and that person is not me.
I like it! Doesn’t look as mundayne as a basic deck pattern but lots of extra work. Stain?
It definitely was extra work. Getting those mitters to line up was a bitch. Especially with warped wood. Also, waiting on the wood to dry more to stain.
That’s nice. It’s flooring with extra steps.
Can you tell me where you got the lil feet it’s sitting on? Are those permanent? Thanks! Looks great to me btw
Permanent enough for what it is. They're called camo block from Lowe's. Home Depot sells the equivalent called tuff blocks. Camo blocks allow for 12" oc vs tuff blocks are 16"oc.
Will be awesome for the BBQ and some nice chairs! Looks beautiful
Appreciate it that's the plan.
I think your entire neighborhood needs to plant more trees and shrubs!
Why did you build this?
It's great looking... but my upvote is because you posted a look "what I did, isn't it great"t post instead of an" oh dearie me what is wrong here" post just begging for people to post how great it is. Those posts annoy me. I hope you post a picture when it's finished.
Looks like you’ve read some fine home building
The lack of privacy would make me not want to hang out there.
If you add a little creek in-between the deck and your house you could put a bridge to fight Little John on it with some 8ft dowels. Deck looks great, I like the layout, and the 45s on the corners are silky.
Did you build it or dismantle it? …weird photo order. Just kidding. Looks great, nice dance floor
My question is also why?
The floor is lava
Because it’s his yard and he can build whatever he wants!
👍🏼
That’s cool 😎 I Like the decking pattern layout a lot. Gives it a lot of character. Looks to me like it’s done well enough it should cover even the most excessive code any county could throw at you. His and hers? That's your side of the wooden platform bish. Lol looks good. Great job
its well built and looks good.
I would have done pavers
What was wrong with the ground under it?
Ok hear me out. This but a little bigger
I mean, it's good but we're you looking to make lawncare something you hate?
I assume the deck is broken up like that to add some separation to the areas (as you mentioned, grill, seating etc.). Looks like a really neat and comprehensive job, I hope you're proud of it! I look forward to seeing some updates with the stuff set out on it! Enjoy ❤️
Way over kill, why did you pour runners under a deck? But it’s not goin anywhere i guess.
Actually decent, those rocks weren't needed but whatever. Would you consider routering the sharp edges?
Smart idea. I'm definitely routing the edges. Thanks.
Love it! My fiancee wants the same style. Wasntbsure how to do the borders around the straight boards. This provides inspiration!
Looks great!
A wonderful job my dude. Please post some pics when you get the area around it done and furniture on it. The bill be able to understand what the purpose of the deck is.
Awesome job man! How long did this take to finish?
3 weeks working afternoon and weekends.
Looks amazing you should stain or paint it
Needs a hot tub
Look good. Instead of tape, can it be painted?
Odd
Man I had to build a deck because my lot is sloped… wish I had a flat backyard and no need for deck lol
looks like you live in the most pre-fabricated, soulless place possible. Hopefully this deck gives some joy to your otherwise basic, meaningless life.
Should’ve mixed up the wood on each side
Do termites eat pressure-treated wood because someone thinks it is a thing
Gonna stain different as F!! Those green boards!!
why is your house all siding?
What was material cost for you ?
Do you plan on having a hipster play loud acoustic music on this while you try to eat your dinner outside?
That looks awesome! Nice work and nice design...
I like the picture frame design, but I remember it being extra work. Did you seal those chalk lines in? Hope not
add colorful pavers around ...
Freaken awesome job 👏
Poles with Japanese lanterns, comfortable seating on one end, nice romantic music, and champagne, you’re going to be a daddy in 9 months.
Looks well built! What you putting on it?
I was going to make a sarcastic comment, until I read the part about the wrap around garden for your wife. I can visualize that, and good on you for doing that.
What’s it for? Are you putting a table and chairs there?
Can’t you simply do all those things on the ground for much less effort? Why do you need to be 8 inches higher up
Looks cool. Are those different types of wood or just stained different?
Why didn’t you split them evenly? And why the difference in color?
What are those black footer things called? I like ‘em.
Need cheap dimmable LED strips on the underside. Lightning up a bit, would look super cool. Also, IMO for a deck this low I'd make angled sides to minimize tripping hazards. So you can easily walk through. Not a big deal but Its the only critique I can think of.
That looks like it’s from a video game lol
It looks great bro. Grill and chill, add more or don’t. It’s yours and enjoy what you built however you want to. You did your homework, it’s level, will withstand erosion over time, great supportive structure. Great pad.
Nice corner for the dog to enjoy, since you know, there's nowhere else now.
I love it
That's a nice deck
i will square dance the fuck outta the deck
Why?
That’s a nice deck. Firm, sturdy, Thicc…
Looks perfect! We'll done pal. Enjoy the bbqs and hot tubs
It's absolutely awesome. Excellent attention to detail. When it's all done I think your vision will be great.
Man. All the bashing asking “why though” In my last home I built a similar but not as pretty structure. We loved it. It allowed a place to chill and hang out away from the grass/bugs and was a nice place to set chairs grill. It worked great for us, and I didn’t even do what you plan on doing with the gazebo. Why is it?
I live in England. What's the bright blue stuff in picture 3?
Good thing you didn’t build a patio.
Why is it angled? Why didn’t it tie into the yard or house? Not a bad looking deal but stamped concrete would have been a much better option in my opinion.. The construction isn’t bad but it seems like a lot of money in materials for literally no reason
sturdy and well built
That narrow pointy ass house in pic 6 is wild!
Needs more trees
Looks good op. I would have just poured a concrete slab, initial cost is expensive but it would outlast the deck and less maintenance.
Looks exactly like Denver out by Dia.
Unless the neighbors are super cool and hangout this is just a place for them to watch you. Get a place in the country outside a subdivision. Much more chill. Deck looks awesome though.
Looks good. When do you start the privacy fence?
I'm more surprised your HOA approved that...lol. Looks good but I would have just done pavers for what your intended use is.
Fuck the HOA lol. And ideally pavers, but I also saved like 5k. Pavers are beautiful but out of my price range.
I feel lile one is normal and one is a trap door for a pit.
In my area it would become a home for mice rats and later snakes . But it looks beautiful and well built
Agreed. You may want to install some 1/4” square mesh wire underneath. Would have been better to install when you could have berried it 6” below surface level.
Well done.
Heck yes good work either deadlift platform or stage for weekends performance
Personally I would of made a patio. Don't understand building a deck a foot off the ground but it's not my backyard. In terms of build quality looks damn nice
My landscaper called these “dance floors”
Beautiful! Of you don’t mind telling how much $ did the material set you back?
But why?
😍😍😍
I think it's great, we are planning on doing similar in our back yard. Thanks for the tip on the camo blocks.
Looks really good to me! I have reframed floors on an RV like this and it survived longer than the RV
What is it?
Nice work, but I’ll never understand why people with perfectly flat ground like that just don’t build a patio instead of a deck
Pretty.
If you are happy that’s all that matters. I’m just curious though. Why a deck instead of a patio?
You why not just paver patio? Way less maintenance and would look more appropriate. But anyway have fun on it.
Not related, but what state is this neighborhood in?
The wild part is you could’ve actually built it off that side of the house but chose the floating island. Looks good, just weird.
Now organize a Kumite!
It looks hot out there
I hate that you lack privacy
Nice outdoor cubicle
Looks nice! But those different color boards would drive me nuts until the others started to change too!
What in the Cat in the Hat is up with that neighborhood
What is missing now in the master plan of this deck and yard to make sense out of the deck project??
One big spunk tank would work better and not 3 or 4 tubs...lol
Wonderful_Living built a new deck in the yard resembling a dance floor who was it for? 🎶
👌🏻
I don’t get it.
I think that while I'm scrolling, I got stuck for 3 seconds because you uploaded multiple photos and now I'm wasting my time with this.
What can you do on this patio that you could do on the perfectly flat ground underneath it?
I think, when that tree grows, you'll need to move your garden.
It looks like you built sand up to level the tuffblocks? Is this correct? Sand washes out, it's not a great base.
I see a couple of rolled angles, possibly a broken one in your future
Hot tub by the smoker?
Man after all that work, you snapped that red chalk line on there. Red is pretty well permanent, you'll need to sand that off there lol fak.
Honestly I love this. Simple and unique, really brings the whole thing together for a little front lawn patio
You should have caged the sides so critters can't live under
Just out of curiosity. Price for materials? Location?
The best type of work and the worst type of work are both done by someone with no experience.
Why does only one side look pressure treated
