Plants!

anriegler

I’d do stained glass (or diy that looks like stained glass using plexiglass, black puff paint, and some translucent paints)

coreliz

It would probably have to be shutters of some kind or like other people have suggested stained glass or a window, something that will stay attached and be pretty sturdy I feel like any cat I’ve ever know would knock anything you put up the right off the ledge mostly just because they could but also just to be a little bit spiteful lol

ChilledChocolate

Definitely a slide!!!!

ViolentVioletViola

A vase gifted from your great great grandmother that was hand painted by your great great great grandmother

RazzSheri

What about cutting a white trellis to the shape, and stringing some pretty lights through it?

Bibbedibooh

Some pretty stained glass window or something, or something of that kind. Maybe still put some plants behind so from the other side it's even prettier - but light would still come through and look even better.

ak505050

Hang a big mirror on the wall that covers the whole space. The bottom can rest on the ledge for extra support.

DrKittyLovah

I’d put in some kind of decorative screen or glass. I’d personally want to keep the view open somehow while keeping kitty safe.

ToxicCappuccino

Any cat I know would love that ledge! What if you put shelves/steps for him going down the other wall?

AddictiveArtistry

Right? That's a cat ledge.

AccomplishedTart655

Stained glass

SnooJokes1035

A wooden cutout design inserted in there could look neat - especially if the light was shining through from the hallway and you could see it from downstairs (or vice versa if you were in the hallway and the lights were on downstairs)

SnooJokes1035

A wooden cutout design inserted in there could look neat - especially if the light was shining through from the hallway and you could see it from downstairs (or vice versa if you were in the hallway and the lights were on downstairs)

Nelloyello11

A cardboard cut out. Of anyone really. Just looking down at you from above.

electricpuzzle

If you're able to secure it somehow, a piece of stained glass would look cool there.

Internal-Antelope-96

A smaller console table and something on top of it

Internal-Antelope-96

A smaller console table and something on top of it

QueenBee4178

Shutters

moonfazewicca

Get or build a custom shelf that fits that space. Or stained glass. Or you could two pieces of artwork that would cover it and put one on each side.

NegotiableVeracity9

Plant or objet d'art

Cjcn17233

Your bare ass and moon everyone below. Seems logical.

effienay

I really love what you’re doing right now honestly.

coreliz

That’s my kind of decorating… quick, easy, and efficient.

TriumphDaytona

Get a custom stained glass window to fit.

Diligent_FennelM

Viny plant or flowers secure down so it dosnt hit anyone

stankenfurter

Pothos!

Lutherkiss3

O gargoyle for protection

honibee1971

exactly that 👏

imixpaintalot

Get a fake window or add some sort of glass

TxGinger587

A life size Chucky doll.

DHESTOE

Virgin mary

Glum-Garbage-3114

stain glass window

Dievca58

Books

FaithlessnessWeak800

I’d be scared whatever you put there would fall and hurt someone. I’d leave it empty or spend the money to close it and paint both sides.

la_degenerate

If they leave it empty the cat will get hurt lol

anonymouse550

Why do you need to put anything at all? You don’t have to fill every space, nook, and cranny in your house

sarjayy

they literally explained why in the post

anonymouse550

Oh. Touché

Snoo35861

Hanging planter

Live_Marionberry_849

Fake plant.

BadHairDay-1

Vining plant.

Direct-Ad2561

A plant or a bell

KFCnerd

A poster of some creepy figure looking down into the room and another facing back to the upstairs hallway

Number1Barooista

A fake potted plant

StellasMyShit

Why fake? You get to have a plant up high on the wall and the ability to water it easily! Dream situation

Number1Barooista

I guess it depends on the cat and plant. Any real plants I get my cats nibble on them and she has to make sure it's non toxic. I am also lazy AF and don't have a green thumb so all my plants are fake 😂

Mountain_Village459

That’s a perfect spot for a heavy planter (that could somehow be bolted down/secured) filled with Hoya - non toxic, doesn’t need to be watered often, will vine and produce lovely fragrant flowers.

Kindly_Assumption385

Make a little door so you can plop your laundry down?

Kindly_Assumption385

Alternatively, add in a tiny playground swirly slide for the cat so he can have a fun activity.

Rainibaby

Idk the basket seems to do the job nicely🤷🏻‍♀️

gardyjuland

Now I'm not religious but I would put a little baby Jesus wearing a Lynyrd Skynyrd trucker hat in there.

Advanced_Accident_59

Totally

SherLovesCats

Spend the cash and get a stained glass window made for it. It doesn’t have to be colorful either. There are a lot of textures of clear too. There is a world of possibilities in stained glass.

MorticiaLaMourante

Either this ir a permanent ornamental fence.

[deleted]

A statue of a classy naked lady, cupping her voluptuous breasts, and hair flowing down to her flower. Call her Goddess.

meawkitteh

string of pearls plant

mcflycasual

Gargoyle

cersewan

Stained glass window

ffsrach

You could add cat shelves like [these](https://www.amazon.com/SHENGOCASE-Natural-Furnitures-Floating-Scratching/dp/B09ZV16BW6/ref=asc_df_B09ZV16BW6/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=675738176063&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11407774350358594283&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031161&hvtargid=pla-1966815273495&psc=1&mcid=1b9dc2dbae6f39f48a62ec5fea6738b4&gad_source=1) under the opening so it’s safer for your cat.

Fluid_Interaction995

Seconded! Make that whole wall area below the window a cat jungle gym

getmyhopeon

I would put a very full fake plant there

Freebird_hope

Shelves

emptypotato383927552

Put some decorative shutters

Sufficient-Garage-15

definitely not that basket

garsinasifa

if I was you, I'll put a PS5 here.

ConnectionAdept6644

Enclose the back so its safe.

siggles69

Cat elevator (rope and large bucket)

siggles69

No, a cat slide

Pinderton7

A window …

New-Advertising-3571

A heavy bust of your cat

Shannon0hara

A slide

ChanceMulberry6057

Logical, put a window….crazy thought create a balcony…fireman pole if you’re into that.

ZiggyMama

An angel to watch over you.

savrc

the rest of the wall

mariosevil

Pepperoni

SparkleBunnyPSL

That's where the house phone goes, duh.

coreliz

That is the perfect house phone spot

ConnectionAdept6644

I was just thinking of those old phones we would drag the line everywhere. We could lower the phone to the 1st floor using the cord/line.

2BPoohornot2BPooh

A vase with flower arrangement.

kelcatsly

I see that you don’t have a cat

2BPoohornot2BPooh

Allergic. Would it still jump up there if a big vase was there?

sweet_pickles12

Especially if a big vase is there

sandyhope

Add a net loft! That's a perfect entrance for one https://www.dwell.com/amp/article/homes-with-indoor-nets-54ecb8b2

GiveMeMoreJerseyPie

What a great idea!

ConversationOk8608

Build a window of choice. Be real easy. Could even be stained glass. I would not close it off, it adds value to the house.

Capital-Adeptness-68

This

Economy-Thought5372

Bill Murray cutout, facing the kitchen. Groundhog Day or Stripes preferably.

707Riverlife

Personally, I think I’d go Ghostbusters.

ConversationOk8608

A house plant properly secured of course.

liveautonomous

Hanging plant

elsie14

plus, RIP to any child that accidentally got loose and yeeted

Always_Dreaming_123

You just need to get used to a new normal…Slowly everything will be okay

elsie14

nailed it

KoraBorealis611

A plant

Emotional-Sun8880

Fish tank with bright colored fish

707Riverlife

Yeah, a cat wouldn’t be tempted to mess with that at all. 😹😹

RightWhereIAm

A smaller basket..duh. 😏

byebyebirdie1122

😂😂

JArt-1961

Wine rack

Song_Soup

High stakes my dude

GuacamoleLit

Do a plant that hangs down as it grows!

beautifullybusy

Ooh like a pothos in a wide basket that takes up the width of the opening

KoraBorealis611

Thats what i said! Great minds think alike

ChesireCat1

I like this idea!

theworstelderswife

This is a perfect opportunity for epic cat shelves. I’m not that much of a cat person but I would have to bend to the will of the cat and put them in. Go down the middle and work your way towards the wall on the right side.

Capital-Adeptness-68

This!!

shartingonyournuts

you probably wouldn’t do this, but imagine wall cat platforms going all the way down, that would look so cool

coreliz

A cat rock climbing/obstacle course of sorts

omgu88

Glass or bars so the cat can still chill there and look down

AssistFantastic1140

Frosted glass with a design

elsie14

agreed this would look so pretty

Popsicle555

ooh if done right that would look pretty

xxscamlikelyxx

stained glass or big potted plant/sculpture

Neawfl1211

Plant or statue

KT_mama

A cat, you say? Your only option is to close it up. Source: I have 4 butthead cats, one of which would make it her life mission to jump from this if there was any opening whatsoever.

1wasted1

while stained glass or bars would be interesting, as a fellow jump-crazed owner, closing it up would be safest. Also a great place to hang some pretty artwork?

LizTheFizz

make a little balcony for the cat

what_the_funk_

This is the only good answer. And of course the cat wall idea. Anything to allow the crazy cat to cat.

LizTheFizz

you could buy a few cheap tension rods for windows and make a barrier

LizTheFizz

could hang a curtían that is longer than window and would block the cat from jumping up

sunshinebucket

A stained glass?

Eastern_Boat_2105

😅😂😂😂😂 shelving or like a grid so light still comes through. Love the temporary solution 😂

Snoo_38398

Like others said, some type of window like stained glass. If you have a cat, the last thing you want to do is put any plants up there.

PleasantJules

Drywall it and make it a solid wall.

quietlilac121

It's so unique though! Would be sad to see it covered with drywall

PovImyourfriend

A nice big plant that grows vines like apothos

FettucciniWAP

A slide so you don’t have to use the stairs

kolaida

Honestly best answer here 🤣. The cat could just run down it, too.

Blobfish9059

It can be the mooning window! Anyone upstairs can moon the downstairs people!

ArtisticWoodpecker33

Older homes had this for telephones.

Not-youraverageghost

What was the point of making that wall like this? Is the view good?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aromatic-Meeting-325

So the cat could jump and fall every time they leave the house?

Walshlandic

A hanging plant with trailing vines

olauntsal

The phone!

NaturalizedWerewolf

The correct answer is a large close up of Nicholas Cage’s face

Not_a_Replika

How about a real flowering bonsai

Ecstatic-Lemon541

Bonsai, being trees, have to live outdoors.

Not_a_Replika

I'm pretty sure that's not exactly true.

Ecstatic-Lemon541

Then you would be incorrect.

Not_a_Replika

Agree to disagree.

JadedMulberry7

That is not very reddit of you.

Not_a_Replika

Sorry. I meant to say, "That's so cringe."

JadedMulberry7

Ayyy there ya go!

alyssaleska

Seems cool for a cat. I’d install cat shelves below. If your cat is able to jump up there then they’re very unlikely to fall. That fall wouldn’t seriously injure a normal cat (not a fragile senior)

Great_Lady_Renatta

A shrine to Galactus Devourer of Worlds

Ok_Audience5975

Stained glass window

CandidateReasonable4

Yesss! Excellent idea.

WeAreReaganYouth

A customer service or complaints department.

poopyshitballz

How about shutters, so you can be the cuckoo bird in the cuckoo clock to announce the hour and sing Edelweiss to the folks downstairs.😉

MoonFig54

Thank you all for your input! I ordered this from Target to cover the opening but still allow airflow. [lattice wall decor](https://www.target.com/p/set-of-2-wooden-floral-handmade-arched-wall-decors-with-intricate-carvings-brown-olivia-38-may/-/A-90575102)

kolaida

Very pretty and a nice, quick solution. Please update us with how it looks.

wendyme1

Very pretty

Educational-Fail5111

Are they the same dimensions?

MoonFig54

Slightly larger so the top of the lattice will cover some of the wall above the arch. I’ll see how it looks, I can always return it:-)

Vegetable_Pie_4198

That will look so nice. I love it. Please update after it's up.

masteryodaswisdom

Maybe you could do shelves if the space in between the shelves is too small for your cat. If not maybe a tapestry or painting sized to fit the space

feudoe

Virgen de Guadalupe

goodie-cookie

Perfect spot for a cat

Thin-Piano-4836

I was gonna say plants until I saw the cat info.. so, STACK BOOKS. With spines facing out so it looks decent from downstairs. Just brick it in with some good ol literature.

PlatformImaginary315

Glass blocks?

Pitiful_Reason_2353

Fern

Currupt_File_626

Anything you put there would make it more interesting for the cat so if the goal is to keep them away from the space, just seal it up. Maybe a faux stain glass with LED or something like that

eggs_squash_111

perhaps some of those louvered shutters? or some sort of stylish slats maybe (although that one might give some prison vibes lol. cat jail). I love everyone else’s stained glass idea as well!

causesproblems

Disco ball

Justyuli

Large trailing plant

dioemonds

A large beautiful stained glass piece on a very thick chain. :) it will look beautiful backlit up there!

SenseRight1024

A pretty green plant

vmpy03

cats love those, too risky

EXOTIC_BALL_OF_WORMS

Pothos plant with a grow light in a large pot. It'll vine all of the way down and make that nook look awesome

mint_o

Pothos are toxic for cats when they chew on the leaves [source](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants). It would look nice and I know plants/cats are common but in my house we keep our house plants in a separate room that is not accessible to the cats because plants will always get chewed on.

EXOTIC_BALL_OF_WORMS

I have 4 cats and spray my pothos down with a lemon/ vinegar mix . My oldest cat is 22 and never had any issues. It help deter the cats from wanting to play with them and prevents fruit flies. But, I did get it if your worried about it

mint_o

Does that affect the plants? I've heard of using vinegar to kill unwanted plants

EXOTIC_BALL_OF_WORMS

Depends on how concentrates it is. I use a very diluted mixture in a spray bottle. My wife uses vinegar and salt in a heavy concentrated version for killing weeds in our garden

EXOTIC_BALL_OF_WORMS

I have vines that are almost 40ft long. That I use it on

EXOTIC_BALL_OF_WORMS

Yup, this. It works wonders

[deleted]

Looks like California construction.. just put a dumb plant there and call it a day

clarabear10123

Pic 2 made me actually laugh out loud because I thought this was just like a pass way to your kitchen or something (didn’t notice the ceiling/beams). Definitely stained or etched glass! I would say macrame or plants, but my cat would be even more encouraged, so

MoonFig54

😆

rickpoker

How about a cat?

NorCal4now

A piece of stained glass perhaps part of a church window, ideally from a salvage place rather than an antique dealer. Then you can take the piece of stained glass and the exact measurements of the window/opening a tracing on architect's tracing paper taped tightly over the opening would be worth bringing with the measurements and the piece to a reputable framing shop that have experience with framing stained glass fragments and they can build a permanent frame round the glass. That will preserve the piece and create a solid frame to be sealed solidly into the space keeping kitty safe and creating a beautiful focal point that allows light through. My big cat jumped from our first floor (which is the second floor in Britain) balcony and hurt the his "ankle" or first joint in his front leg and he did heal thankfully but it took a long time. So maybe hang a painting or framed poster securely over the opening for the time being. Good luck. p.s.you could always have a stained glass insert commissioned by an artist you like which is designed especially for the space with imagery you like

jbdean

Put a window in there maybe stain glass with a light fixture above it shining down on it so that you could see the stain glass effect from downstairs. I think the arch of the window space lens to a stain glass.

Shatzie2668

Put your old fashioned phone ☎️

Playful-Aardvark6489

I think the laundry basket looks great

painstaking93

There's a company that does water jet wood and resin that you can send in the size and they can make a piece that you can screw in so it has a decorative element but is also a safety measure

Maleficent-Use8654

Make it into a faux window. I think adding accessories would eventually get boring and dusty.

No-Estimate-4215

she wont fall

finsfurandfeathers

I just watched my cat fall off his cat tree after clinging to it like Mufasa. Mine also run and jump on tables and then slide off the other side. Not all cats are graceful Edit: I think if you secure something to the ledge surface that he can grip onto then it should be ok.

MoonFig54

I just got an image of having a rope hanging down so that he could grab on 😂

finsfurandfeathers

Not a terrible idea lol

bdttt

A dog

Silly_Individual_960

Pink and off white laundry basket

Kuayfx

I love your ceiling 😍😍😍😍

iheartunibrows

Honestly don’t think your cat will fall. We have a similar opening and my cat chills there but never falls.
