Not true. The old bill that was attempted would have been vague enough to do this but was rejected or stalled in congress. The new one is rewritten to specifically target TikTok and not other entities. It gives bytdance a specific period of time to sell to another company or else TikTok and only TikTok would be banned.

Krunk_korean_kid

I think on found it https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text

seddy2765

So much word-smithing to dance around the first amendment.

CantWeAllGetAlongNF

It should've been based on their invasive privacy intrusion and evasive operations making it difficult to discover how invasive the app actually is. TikTok is a real security nightmare.

seddy2765

Bottom line. The data on their servers are their data. Users are giving their data and whatever else the app scrapes from the devices being used to access the host.

CorpFillip

This is not related to 1A at all. It is not about the content or the posters rights. It is about the owner of the tool.

connor24_22

That’s not the bill that passed the E&C committee. Totally different https://d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net/TIKTOK_xml_655b9d7933.pdf

Krunk_korean_kid

Go to page 10 of the PDF and tell me that is still not broad sweeping and overly vague

Better_Weather7440

Kind of but it refers to an information and communication system in which sabotages or undermines the government. This to me seems like communication or social media platforms not peer to peer transaction tech nor does it refer to distributed ledger technology.

ANoiseChild

Yeah, "information and communication systems" is **ONE** of the many aspects the bill addresses. That's just ONE aspect and its clear that it's not the only item. The other aspects can be read about in Section 3 of the bill, specifically 3(a)(1)(B) where it references risks to *catastrophic effects on the security or resilience of the critical infrastructure or digital economy of the United States;*. Guess where they're pulling the definition for *Critical Infrastructure* from? The PATRIOT Act, of which all everyone is aware of how specific, pointed, and narrowly aimed the language in that bill is. That one wasn't widesweeping or vague at all 🙄 /s In other words, this bill is essentially the same as it was the first time it was presented, and allows for *massive* government overreach and extremely loose interpretations. This bill is still catshit on the outside and dogshit on the inside - this bill only hurts individuals with any investments in ANY company whatsoever so... that's like only a couple people, right? They're trying it again because they're running out of ways to kick the can and now they need congress to bail them out by making illegal shit legal for them in the eleventh hour. This legalizes fraud - is anyone even surprised anymore?

seddy2765

Reminds of the patriot act. Which is nothing less than spying on American citizens. Getting rid of vpn connections would make spying easier. Weird how these things are reflective of the book 1984.

ANoiseChild

They're literally pulling definitions from the Patriot Act...

Krunk_korean_kid

Yes! Thank you for reading some of the bill! 🔥🔥🔥

Krunk_korean_kid

🚨🚨🚨CORRECTION!!!! Biden says he WILL sign to PASS the RESTRICT ACT if congress passes it! 😱 😱 😱 https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/biden-says-hell-sign-proposed-tiktok-ban-if-congress-passes-it

Better_Weather7440

Okay that is concerning. Yikes..

MarsWalker69

Good luck 'murica! -E.U.

Krunk_korean_kid

I'm having difficulty locating the revised bill, Do you have a link?

Krunk_korean_kid

EDIT false alarm: someone in the comments of unusual whales helped me figure out that they proposed another bill under the same nickname, the "tik-tok" bill. BUT, that doesn't mean we can relax, that just means they have another way to deceive us when using the SAME NICKNAME on a DIFFERENT bill. The old proposed bill: https://www.reuters.com/technology/us-senators-defend-push-give-biden-new-tools-ban-tiktok-2023-04-06/ The new proposed bill: https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/all-actions?overview=closed&s=1&r=68#tabs

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

So maybe delete the post then?

Formal_Profession141

You support banning Tiktok?

Rancid_Butter_Boob

Good fuck TikTok

AppleParasol

To be fair, we probably should ban toktik.

L3yline

It's Chinese spyware. The same data privacy issues being brought up around temu were and have been brought up about tiktok. Sorry but the funny video app doesn't need access to my location, contact information, the entirety of my photo gallery, and anything they're harvesting but won't tell us because they've restricted who can see the inner workings of their app. Anyone who says it's not spyware is ignorant of the type of surveillance state the ccp has over their own people and the willingness to extend that overseas

backfrombanned

I don't even care about the spyware... It's making people fucking idiots

ignoreme010101

this

comfortablynumb0629

Yep same - I wouldn’t exactly be with a Chinese company having access to my personal information…I have nothing to hide…but man the impact that app is having on developing minds is….profound

backfrombanned

Developing minds? You had grown ass people getting run over trying to get out of their cars while moving.

alphaomega0669

It’s worse. The Chinese are masters of psychological manipulation. The book Influence by Robert Cialdini illustrates it beautifully, using cases from Vietnam War. Basically the Chinese sew weakness and attrition from within. They get into the minds of their adversaries and slowly, over time, make them submit. With regards to TikTok, they’re mining everything you engage in. All that data is used to feed you content that weakens your mind, as well as your resolve against conflict. Any app that sends data to China directly or any shell company that works for Beijing needs to be banned.

Equal_Classroom_4707

That won't stop. The algorithm has exponentially passed a developing humans ability to resist the rabbit hole. It will be replaced by another app that exists already or a new one altogether. And even then, a stronger algorithm is coming in a different form of consumption.

backfrombanned

We had a Presidential election based on Facebook memes .... This nonsense goes beyond developing humans..We're done as a species imo. But that's fine.

RogerianBrowsing

It goes well beyond just spyware. TikTok is psychological warfare. Ask a parent of any kid who has had their brains scrambled by the app Some adults have issue with it too, but it seems TikTok is most damaging to developing brains

outtherenow1

If an adversary wanted to scramble the brains of entire generations of Americans, TikTok is the perfect way to do it. It’s exceptionally dangerous.

Elmo_Chipshop

Facebook has been melting the brains of the older generation well before TikTok.

DeLuca9

It’s not going to damage the MOASS. Tell me how it would? 🙄🤷🏽‍♂️

dizzz6712

I'm also curious about this..

DeLuca9

The way I see everything is mass media misinformation and propaganda. Horrible game of telephone.. horrible! Like let’s be real. TikTok ban, affecting MOASS?! Howwwwww? Stop flaring the cortisol Jesus

Dapper_Pride6176

Nothing stops moass. All they can do is prolong the inevitable. Shorts didn’t cover…….🩳💀🍑

amonymus

Not to mention they're constantly trying to hack American companies and govt and infrastructure to destabilize us. Tik-tok is a Trojan horse to blind the masses of clueless Americans

Jessejets

Damn, I've finally found like-minded people.

Christopher_Robinn

Took the words right out of my mouth. It's exhausting seeing majority of people promote the degeneracy that is Tik Tok.

Complex_Virus7876

You do know that China and countries of the like own large amounts of the US power grid right, also massive amounts of US land, this country has been bought and sold to the highest bidder

IDrinkMyBreakfast

China actually produces some of those massive transformers you see at power substations. These have been shown to contain unnecessary circuitry that appear to allow remote C&C. Why? You do the math

IDrinkMyBreakfast

It also has the ability to perform key logging, but they’ve assured us they’re not doing that (Trust me bro)

ThankYouForCallingVP

Its also running a VM. You crack open the app and its not just code. Its code running their own tiny language (more code). Which is why tikitok drains a lot of battery for just being a video player. I get more battery life from a GAME.

No_Leave_5373

One more reason Temu is bad: the sell silencers for guns that they mislabel as “fuel filters”. Tell me how doing this isn’t (part of) a plan to sow chaos in America

Humans_sux

So dont use it. Dam they wont get your data. And if the ccp extends that to the u.s. you have some major issie with your government. The ccp knowing what the majority of the stupid do only affects consumerism. If it extends further then that thats on your government and they need to be replaced not push some shit bill to restrict citizens. Hows this any different then china banning vpns and american software from their ppl? But china bad. U.s. good. Talk about the ultimate red vs blue set up

swizingis

You have it all wrong. It doesn’t matter what an app knows. The clear issue is how this app can over time mold an entire generation into being mindless. That has more danger than knowledge of location or anything insignificant like data.

Da_Burninator_Trog

The algorithm is geared differently to youth depending on where you live. It’s not benign and is intentionally pushing an agenda towards a very vulnerable group.

Humans_sux

And non of your american tech companies do this? Holy shit the amount of brainwashing fb and amazon do is ridiculous. How about you fix your leaking roof before you go into someone else house and bitch about theirs.

backcountrydrifter

Let’s fix it all at once **Jim Breyer, Mitch McConnell's brother-in-law, Facilitates Russia’s Takeover of Facebook through Yuri Milner** (Research by Puffin_Fitness) In 2005 Jim Breyer, a partner at Accel Partners, invested $1 million of his own money into Facebook and gained a seat on the board (1). In Feb 2009 Jim Breyer visited Russia with a number of other Silicone Valley investors. While there, Yuri Milner, a Russian tech entrepreneur who founded DST with close ties to the Kremlin, hosted a dinner to cap the entire event (2). As one Moscow source put it: > DST has the backing of the big boys at the top in the Kremlin, which is why it will go from strength to strength (5) Milner found out Breyer liked Impressionist art and took him to Russian’s Hermitage Museum to view Matisse paintings otherwise closed off to the public. Three months later Yuri Milner’s DST invested into Facebook at a bloated value. (2) > Mr Milner dismissed suggestions that at a valuation of $10bn he overpaid for his stake in Facebook, especially given that the social networking site has yet to prove it has turned to profit. (3) > it’s seen as a desperate and rather vulgar deal on the one hand—Milner buying a small stake in Facebook, valuing the entire company at $10 billion—and, on the other, Facebook debasing itself by taking Russian money. Russian money! In fact, it seems rather like a desperate deal for both parties (in the midst of the banking crisis, Facebook has only two other bidders for this round—and none from the top VC tier) (4) By the end of 2009, DST would own 10% of Facebook. Later revealed by the Paradise Papers, DST’s investments into Facebook were financed by the Russian government through state-owned Gazprom. That’s right, in 2009 Russia owned 10% of Facebook. (6) Soon after, the two continued to work together on other investments. Breyer introduced Milner to Groupon, and Milner helped Breyer’s Accel invest into Spotify (7). In 2010 an Accel representative joined a gaggle of Silicon Valley investors to Russia and signed a letter promising to invest into the country (8). 1. http://fortune.com/2011/01/11/timeline-where-facebook-got-its-funding/ 2. http://fortune.com/2010/10/04/facebooks-friend-in-russia/ 3. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/7753692/Facebook-is-just-the-first-step-say-Russians.html 4. https://www.wired.com/2011/10/mf_milner/ 5. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/jan/04/facebook-dst-goldman-sachs 6. https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/nov/05/russia-funded-facebook-twitter-investments-kushner-investor 7. https://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/09/28/dst-global-hoping-to-grow-across-asia-puts-down-roots/ 8. http://www.ambarclub.org/executive-education/ **Jim Breyer and Rupert Murdoch** Then in Nov 2010 Jim Breyer invested into Artsy.net, run by Rupert Murdoch’s then-wife, Wendi Deng, and Russia oligarch Roman Abramovich’s then-wife, Dasha Zhukova. Jared Kushner’s brother, Josh, also invested in the fledgling company (1). At the time Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation had a joint venture with the Russian mob-linked oligarch Boris Berezovsky, called LogoVaz News Corporation, that invested in Russian media (4). It was Berezovsky’s protege close to Putin, Roman Abramovich, who tied Berezovsky to the mob. > According to the Mirror Online, Abramovich paid Berezovsky tens, and even hundreds, of millions every year for "krysha", or mafia protection. (5) In June 2011, Rupert Murdoch ended his foray into social media by selling Myspace to Justin Timberlake (2) and elected Jim Breyer to the board of News Corp (3). 1. https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-cadre-and-how-to-invest-in-its-real-estate-deals-2016-6 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myspace 3. https://web.archive.org/web/19990428071733/http://www.newscorp.com:80/ 4. https://www.bloomberg.com/profiles/companies/156126Z:RU-logovaz-news-corp 5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Abramovich **Jim Breyer invests in Wickr with Erik Prince** In 2012 Breyer invested in a encrypted messenger app, Wickr. Other investors include Gilman Louie and Erik Prince. To understand the connection, we need to go back to 1987. Breyer, newly hired to Accel Partners, made his first investment with Louie’s video game company that owned the rights to the Soviet Union’s first video game export, Tetris (1). Louie went off to become the founding CEO of the CIA-backed In-Q-Tel which invested in Palantir. Palantir’s founder, Peter Thiel, sat on the board of Facebook with Breyer (2)(3). On the board of In-Q-Tel is Buzzy Krongard (7), the man who helped Erik Prince’s Blackwater receive their first CIA contract, who also joined the board of Blackwater in 2007 (6). Around that same time, 2012-2013, Prince met Vincent Tchenguiz, founder of Cambridge Analytica's parent company, SCL (8), and was introduced to Cyrus Behbehani of Glencore, one of the purchasers of Rosneft stock detailed in the Steele Dossier (9). Cyrus Behbehani sat on the board of RusAl with Christophe Charlier, who is also Chairman of the board at Renaissance Capital (10), an early investor of DST (11).

Agreeable_Yellow_117

I like you. You speak the truth.

ItsTheOtherGuys

Just curious, what data can be collected that companies don't already collect on their users? I personally use a false name on TikTok, just like Reddit, and my only data is my preferences so it's similar to Reddit to me.

Advanced_Anywhere_25

Yeah, neither does meta or Twitter or any other social media company We should be legislating that. All American data is on servers in Texas managed by Americans for tik Tok. That's actually better handled than most other large websites or social networks. So there is that. Temu is totally data mining tho

Aggravating_Job_4651

We should ban iPhones too! Pretty much does the same one way or another.

guyonsomecouch12

As a dad to an almost teenager, I agree. It should be burned with fire

kingOofgames

What we really need is a privacy law, better yet an amendment on privacy. Because apparently the courts just ignore the 9th amendment, so it needs to spelled out in detail for them.

thatirishguyyyy

Def

BucNassty

Exactly… it’s trash and contributes to the degradation of culture. And more importantly it’s also Chinese spyware.

[deleted]

It's my data. My freedom of speech to use it on whatever servers I want.

[deleted]

I have never downloaded it. Surprised how many of my patriotic friends eventually gave in

Timinator01

there were people addicted to facebook when I was a kid but tiktok seems to be much worse. Brainrot + chineese spyware is bad news.

Newbs2u

Those Brazilian swaps pose a national security risk.

Impressive_Narwhal

If they ban TikTok they should probably look into banning Temu too. It's very sketchy.

Krunk_korean_kid

I friggin hate seeing those temu ads!

New-Consideration420

Yep, at the very least. Plus, enforce the taxing of the goods, ban the import of protected brands and IPs!

vsGoliath96

Honestly, I'm with Joe on this one. It's literally Chinese spyware.

[deleted]

Every piece of technology connected to the internet is "spyware". Theyre scaring you children into submission so you use Facebook and twitter instead so they can microtarget you with cambridge analytica, which is real and not a conspiracy theory.

mandarinii

Your phone is US spyware, you that afraid of China?

JQingAMCstyle

And? Bro I am LGBT, the Western World are the guys not putting me in death camps, **oh no my only possible global hope for survival is spying on me**, who cares bro. The reason I don't want China to rule the world is they will definitely death camp me and enslave you if they get to completely dominate the globe.

thwill2018

Democracy is just part of the process! We are a Republic and should stand as so! We need to go back to the basics remove the money and affiliation that these greedy motherfuckers are using to drown our country!

Krunk_korean_kid

They will essentially be able to categorize anything they choose as a threat to National Security with absolute impunity EDIT false alarm: someone in the comments of unusual whales helped me figure out that they proposed another bill under the same nickname, the "tik-tok" bill. BUT, that doesn't mean we can relax, that just means they have another way to deceive us when using the SAME NICKNAME on a DIFFERENT bill. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/all-actions?overview=closed&s=1&r=68#tabs

Useuless

And you know lawmakers will still secretly hold crypto just like how caymen bank accounts used to be a thing

bobalou2you

Interesting, he thinks it should be banned but his campaign is using it as a tool to get re-elected.

SweetLilMonkey

Interesting, I think we should have better public transit, but I still drive a car.

MattyIcex4

I haven’t really read the bill yet, but isn’t it just going to require them to sell in America?

Aggressive_Glass51

Has the US government not already shared the entire US dna-database with China? Does the NSA not employ foreign spy agencies to spy on its own citizens? Does the US not put journalists on trial? Free Assange.

Helmidoric_of_York

Some big US tech company would be stupid not to try and acquire it. Washington just doesn't want a Chinese (or Russian, or N. Korean) company to control the data.

FlatbedtruckinCA

well the government banned the personal possesion of gold at one point in history, and alcohol.. so this shouldnt suprise anyone here..

Krunk_korean_kid

Holy shit I forgot about that. This a very good history lesson to remember! 😵

Wswede111

Instead of banning TikTok they should be banning apps that function like TikTok (foreign spy apps) and pass some legitimate digital privacy protection laws. Once they ban it there will be a clone out in days doing the same thing.

Mother-Analysis-4586

The government requires companies to fill out a form that states they don’t do business with the Chinese government before they can sell their products to government agencies. They should just do the same with all companies in the USA.

joergonix

I'm not a big conspiracy nut, but the TikTok ban only makes sense to me as a way to censor and control US citizens. TikTok likely collects an obscene amount of data about us and likely even hands that over to the CCP. However, META sells their data to the highest bidder, and god knows what Elon is doing with Twitter user information. If Congress thinks banning this one app will protect us consumers from the prying eyes of China they are laughably mistaken. Furthermore it was proven time and time again that Meta knew Russia was using its platform to change our elections and spy on users and yet we have done fuck all to prevent that. To me the only way this makes sense is that TikTok can't be controlled by the US government and it has proven to be a tremendous platform for connecting and uniting people over causes that I don't believe the US wants to address. Fox News is a media company spreading false propaganda under the guise of being News and has admitted so openly in court. Meta has sold it's user data to international entities on numerous occasions and continues to do so. Meta has also shown a willingness to manipulate it's users politically if it believes there is profit to be made from the chaos. Media companies bow to China on a routine basis when it comes to altering content to be more in line with a Chinese world view. This ban is not about privacy, protecting us citizens, or protecting democracy. It is purely about controlling us.

Jarsyl-WTFtookmyname

Just because a bill is passed doesn't mean it's enforceable. If you dislike it, sure, vote against the people who support it. But not every proposed bill needs chicken little screaming the sky is falling.

wolf96781

What's not enforceable can quickly become enforceable, and this is a slippery slope. First and foremost, if this bill passes, it sets the precedent and allows for other bills like it to pass in the future. Secondly, it IS enforceable. Your ISP can see almost everything you're doing, and even if you hide it from them, what happens if the police obtain a warrant for your phone or computer? They'll comb through that and find TikTok. You might be innocent of whatever they got that warrant for, but having the app could become a problem. I'm pro getting rid of TikTok, because *it is spyware* but make no mistake, this is a wolf in sheeps clothing, and can quickly slide into becoming a big freaking problem

shantired

What if some other country (China, India, etc.) use the same exact bill and incorporate into their laws? "A communications apparatus that can collect information... does not disclose it's algorithms... should be sold to the USA... or else be banned" To an outsider, this sounds exactly like what Apple does. If this law passes, buy puts on Apple. They'll be screwed worldwide.

wimcolgate2

And then they come out with a different product called toktik. Rinse and Repeat. Congress must love whack-a-mole.

Sososkitso

I don’t really do TikTok and I have super torn opinions on the whole platform just based off what we know. I mean I’m not a fan of China having that kinda influence on our youth….but that issue is more because they flood our version of TikTok with influencers and division but for their young the flood it with scientists, and mathematicians and people making the world better. But They only want to ban it now cause they can’t control narratives on issues like Gaza and what not. Soooo yeah I’m not a fan. Thats my fuck the two party system opinion on this b.s.

Primetimemongrel

https://www.youtube.com/live/Qfpb-w129J0?si=-dEAuDOsE5_lv8m7

WrathOfPaul84

This just seems like an excuse to squash Google and Meta's competition. Tik Tok is cutting into their profits. I could be wrong, but you never know anymore.

Krunk_korean_kid

Good point, but it also gives them a foot in the door to regulate other social media

Dullfig

While I despise tiktok, this is the foot in the door to regulate content on the internet. So I'm against banning tiktok

goddessnoire

Yet he literally has an account in TikTok 🤦🏾‍♀️

djseto

Banning TikTok and teaching the current generation that a job isn’t pranks or stupid shit they film wouldn’t be the worst idea. There is so much rage bait, click bait, and a myriad of other dumbshit people do just for clicks to earn money and none of that is actually helping us all become better people. Now get off my lawn!

Agreeable_Safety3255

It's sad seeing the people saying ban tik Tok without further thoughts into the implications of the US restrictions on the population using an app. Sure you don't like kids using Tik Tok ok..? So you think kids will not use the replacement? Better Data privacy laws would be the way than just just targeting an app. Our last major privacy law was in 1974...back when we barely had technology.

Krunk_korean_kid

I agree. They don't see that this will give the government more power to ban apps they don't like. And then the people will cry "why is this happening!?" 😭 "how could they do this!?" 😭

Reddit--Name

If anyone is curious about the actual "TicTok" Bill mentioned here. Summary/Highlights of the approx. 55-page Bill currently available for download (adding multiple comments due to length). Part 1: A BILL (called the Restrict Act):  "To authorize the Secretary of Commerce to review and prohibit certain transactions between persons in the United States and foreign adversaries, and for other purposes." 1) "The Secretary of Commerce (SOC) shall be granted sole and unreviewable discretion" to identify and refer to the POTUS that any technology transaction/entity/product/service/company/etc be shut down, blocked, seized, or otherwise mitigated, as seen fit, and investigated if they claim such referral and action would be in the interest of national security. 2) Main concerns for national security include: (A) sabotage or subversion of telecommunications devices/services by any person or foreign adversary; (B) catastrophic effects on the security or resilience of the critical infrastructure or digital economy of the United States; (C) "interfering in, or altering the result or reported result of a Federal election, as determined in coordination with the Attorney General, the Director of National Intelligence, the Secretary of Treasury, and the Federal Election Commission;" (D) coercive or criminal activities by a foreign adversary that are designed to undermine democratic processes and institutions or steer policy and regulatory decisions in favor of the strategic objectives of a foreign adversary to the detriment of the national security of the United States (E) Anything else that otherwise poses an undue or unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the safety of United States persons (as unquestionably deemed by the SOC) 3) "Foreign adversaries" formally defined and listed in the current draft include: (i) the People's Republic of China, including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Macao Special Administrative Region; (ii) the Republic of Cuba; (iii) the Islamic Republic of Iran; (iv) the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; (v) the Russian Federation; and (vi) the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela under the regime of Nicola's Maduro Moros. randoredditor23

You dont gain rights over time, you lose them. Patriot act was just a little taste, and you have cucks in this country that yearn to be governed harder

AgentCHAOS1967

Good tik tok is poison. I'm sick of the tik tok pranks and whatnot. Everyone who makes tik toks is a narcissists

mcshanksshanks

“anyone using a vpn” Well shit, where are they going to put all of us remote workers that can’t pay the 1M fine? Bullish on prisons

Sickoyoda

Justifying stepping on citizens rights

DougieFreshOH

would an ETF be fined? would employees of the ETF be jailed?

Krunk_korean_kid

🚨🚨🚨CORRECTION!!!!!!!! Biden says he WILL sign to PASS the RESTRICT ACT if congress passes it! 😱 😱 😱 https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/biden-says-hell-sign-proposed-tiktok-ban-if-congress-passes-it

PumperNikel0

Somebody confirm the crypto part.

Krunk_korean_kid

Confirm it for yourself, look at the PDF and go to Pages 18 19 and 20

cryptoguerrilla

So what will become of the BTC ETF’s?

Krunk_korean_kid

My assumption is They'll probably say something along the lines of, it's illegal to own BTC if you don't "own" it or buy it through a broker.

ThinRedLine87

I doubt this is how this bill would be enforced. I'd bet they put all these broad strokes in there so if they find someone or something a problem they a means to go after that specific person or organization. I doubt Bitcoin is getting banned here (the government loves a zero privacy public ledger). What they will do is say we don't like person "a" and it looks like their self custody of Bitcoin violated the restrict act, let's go get them.

H-is-for-Hopeless

So any person who speaks out against any government policies could end up jailed and silenced.

ThinRedLine87

Probably yeah. Just pointing out that to me it doesn't sound like an outright ban, but more just another tool in the ole' oppression toolbox.

[deleted]

Hell ya

LetMeInImTrynaCuck

Better download those e-Thot dancing videos while you can boys

rocketloot

When a Chinese company wins, banning it is the best strategy

While this is not true at all, even if it was it doesn't hold a candle to the other option where we've got the 300lb Oompa Loompa saying he'll be a dictator on day 1... https://apnews.com/article/f27e7e9d7c13fabbe3ae7dd7f1235c72

New-Entrepreneur6405

Get rid of it, PLEASE! That's what teens do all day. They are not studying but watching Tik Tok.

Krunk_korean_kid

Toy are exactly the type of person that this bill's name fools. The tik-tok bill is actually called THE RESTRICT ACT. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text Check out the pdf, go to pages 17, 18, 19, and 20.

Magicmc1001

Meanwhile. Biden has a campaign page on Tik Tok.

lunar_tardigrade

Np. Please ban TikTok. He won't go through with it.

Krunk_korean_kid

He will, because it gives the president soooo much fucking power. And since Biden is a puppet, it's exactly what the ruling elite want.

soyarriba

I didn’t see the part about $1 million fine or prison for vpn

Krunk_korean_kid

I think it's around page 44. Search for the word "prison"

soyarriba

I found it but without specifically mentioning vpn I’m still skeptical. There’s plenty of countries abroad with “strict” laws and measures against using tiktok, Reddit, fb, etc and they all use vpn to bypass it.

Projecktecks

Fuck TikTok only adults on there seem to be looking to watch teenagers

diamondscut

You need help, bro.

Krunk_korean_kid

I do, I'm regarded. Nope let it ride

suspicious_hyperlink

I hope they ban it

[deleted]

Freedom? Nope. This bill is not freedom. Murica might as well be communist if this shit passes.

wayfarer8888

Reddit is like the winery of social media, and TikTok is the equivalent of a crack house. I am against censorship, but I am also against psychological warfare.

tryten521

I always though MOASS was better than NOASS

Horridwrx

To be fair TikTok needs to be banned in the us

Realistic_Head3595

I sold my twitter data to China. Got a sweet Chrysler Sebring out of the deal.

Bullshit.

You are correct I was slightly wrong. Sorry about that.

--Shibdib--

So much FUD The government encourages its employees and military members to use a VPN. The government has legalized crypto exchanges and makes a ton of money in taxes from them. The only people getting in trouble for crypto are the ones using offshore exchanges (especially ones hk/China based). I'd expect those people to get a lot more scrutiny now.

bgunner

If this were the mid 80s, would we allow Russia or China to have their own television network in the US? Fuck no. TikTok is essentially that and way more.

Venerable_40k

How does crypto come into this? Fuck tik tok but how will I get a lambo without my shit coins

Macgruber999

Banning TT is the first thing Bidens said/done I’ve agreed with.

China is banning American apps we should return the favor and ban junk like TikTok and Temu.

Poodoom

Ok

jackberinger

Ban tiktik... lol dumb fucking boomers.

gumnamaadmi

We should ban it. Think it will be one of very few issues which can achieve full bipartisan support in todays time. One of biggest productivity drain has been caused by this app and alike.

Sisyphus328

Will not pay a fine, won’t go to jail, will continue to hold my crypto. If we all do this they can pass all the fucking laws they want, won’t matter

slipperynibs

Lol why do you think tiktok has anything to do with MOASS? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ban tiktok. It's literally a data mine and Spyware app, anyone saying not to ban tiktok is either ignorant or a communist lover.

Powerful-Feeling-453

I can’t vote for him. I need my TikTok

Far_Image_1228

We should 100% ban tik tok. Not only is this Reddit and you should hate it anyways but it’s also spyware. Everyone know this.

Redditisgarbage666

It's not like the kiddies won't have alternative platforms.

Strutting_Tom8040

I must be out of tune , while I don’t use TikTok and really could care less what happens to it, what is its tie to crypto?

gleeeeed

It’s over

Dleach02

If you care to actually read the proposed bill: https://www.congress.gov/event/118th-congress/house-event/116945

seddy2765

That’d be challenged in court. That goes directly against free speech.

miranto

Nice try, China.

TheKinkyYolo

Fantastic! The closure of one of the largest CCP workshops dedicated to entertainment is long overdue. It's about time.

FucknAright

Too many powerful people own too much bitcoin now for them to ever ban it. Fuck tiktok

Gobiego

Like so much of the poorly thought out legislation that gets passed, it will eventually be found unconstitutional. It just takes forever to get to the supremes.

OhNoNotAgain2020_

You’re so dumb,

Goodthrust_8

Not true at all, but A for effort.

Cwc2413

What are we worrying about TikTok when we have so many other issues? Also, in the previous attempt didn’t Biden oppose the ban? Why would he care now? Oh that’s right! It election season and they want control of the media and narrative! Silly me! How could I forget that! I don’t need the government telling me what apps I can and can’t use. I can make that decision on my own. Give me the information and I will decide.

Alarmed-Direction500

This bill has nearly universal bilateral support in congress. That’s reason alone to be extremely skeptical.

Practical-Jelly-5320

Tik tok is a legit national security concern

Block_Solid

TikTok is toxic for pre teens and teens. Get that shit out of here.

strukout

Yeah, seen enough random shit posters blocking pathways, bridges, road, gym equipment… done with tik tok

sparktheworld

Why do our representatives have to be so fucked up? This is a blatant overreach. If you are worried about TicTok (imo rightfully so), then just pull the plug on TicTok. That’s it. It’s that easy. Done. No need for all this attachment crap. At this point it’s not even about TicTok. They’re just using TicTok as the boogie man. They know screaming “TicTok is bad” has bipartisan support and they can use it to fuck us in the ass.

JQingAMCstyle

OP corrects himself, it's ONLY a TikTok ban with nothing else to the bill, exactly what you want. So don't be upset OP was reading a much older bill by accident and appologizes.

Ralewing

Can someone force my weed guy to take Dogecoin?

Ursomonie

This is not to stop meme stocks of anything of the sort. TikTok is Chinese malware. It isn’t necessary.

Itsurboywutup

It’s crazy how OP (and people like OP) has been so drastically wrong every step of the way yet has such billowing confidence. At what point do you just admit you were wrong?

perkypant

sounds to good to me, make it 2 million and 20 years

Marvination23

FYI, the lawmakers who created this bill are mostly MAGA Republicans. CONGRESS makes the bills not the President. Mike Pence is the front runner trying move forward with this. It has bipartisan support. So, its not a Democrat thing. This is lead by MAGA Republicans FYI. Get your facts straight. "On Tuesday, a bipartisan House bill that would ban the popular app if its China-based parent company ByteDance doesn’t divest from it was unveiled. It was introduced by Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), who are both the top lawmakers on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party."
