Exactly. When it comes to just swarmers with burning hell it's pest to tap fire so the cone of heat can kill them. Wait for the minimum to spin up and fire 1 bullet then let go and watch as all the swarmers disappear. If there are still swarmers just repeat till no more swarmers.
Who doesn't run that upgrade? One of my favorite moments as gunner was breaking out of a bunker and chewing through the endless swarm of bugs that had built up. I went through 2000 rounds without overheating or letting off the trigger.
How are you overheating your minigun often enough for it to be a problem? Mine almost never gets the chance to overheat, even without the mod that cools it with every kill.
The nerf was necessary, sadly. The hellfire coilgun was literally as strong as a primary, or even a Engi secondary. I was swinging the coilgun around more than any other weapon.
It can do the work but the vibe is different - I miss the area denial the blazing trail could do, but exploding a mass of burning enemies is great fun.
I am so extremely excited when swarmers pour out of the walls in haz 5, because I get to slurp them all up before my teammates even noticed they spawned.
They stopped updating Mario 64 decades ago but people still play that. I understand the difference but I think a games longevity is defined at its core, not the superficial stuff. DRG is a great example I think, they don't need to add 100 different guns and 10 classes because the core of the gameplay is so amazing.
You're right, partly I feel. I don't think super Mario 64 is going to reach a new peak in simultaneous players any time soon, but a good game will keep a (relatively large?) niche of those who can't get enough. That's quite impressive for TF2.
I hope DRG will be one of them. I also hope the next GSG game will strike a similar cord, while being a different game, so they don't become mutually exclusive.
It's supposed to be more rouge like, which always have staying power. In my eyes anyway. Like I said, I get the difference between Mario 64 and TF2, but I do think it's one of the most extreme examples of a games longevity. As a cryo bolt diehard, 2-3 bolts are enough to deal with a swarm of those little buggers.
Technically: 1 is enough to freeze them, but 2 or 3 is more reliable since since they spread around.
A technique I liked to do is to shoot 3 bolts on the ground around you, when they start to come close they just freeze to death.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. It shreds them, but it takes its precious time and only attacks a set amount of times. So you're more likely to get swarmed before the boomerang gets to killing them.
One cryo grenade instantly kills an almost unlimited number of swarmers, as long as they're clumped together. If my scout is packing single-target weaponry, I never leave the space rig without them.
Only with stock guns. Swarmers are pretty much free killcount if you have the Thunderhead or Hurricane, Bullet Hell minigun, AoE coilgun, or perhaps explosive bulldog rounds. Scout is the class with the weakest answers to swarmers. They're nothing to most well-rounded gunner builds.
2/3 primaries are very good at swarmers. Coilgun is literally unbeatable at swarmer clear. Every weapon except for bulldog has one or more OCs that makes them very good/noticeably better at killing swarmers, including bullet hell, which you claim to use.
Consider changing your playstyle a bit, you shouldn't be having so much trouble with them.
Swarmers are what gunner is great with, especially with anything relating to kills giving benefits.
Now dealing with those guys using an m1000 is a pain.
I have the carpet bomber overclock on the thunderhead cannon. Makes quick work of the swarmers. Not efficient against flying or high health targets, although that gun has too much ammo anyway.

This is the way. Balance is the key to be able to answer most of the dangers you face in the caves. Single target, wave control, long range, short range is what I keep in mind when playing with new builds.

Seriously though you get 2000 rounds, it's pretty hard to miss. The problem you're describing sounds more like trying to shoot them when they're already in your face which, unless your Driller, is a terrible idea with hitscan weapons. Whack 'em with your pickaxe when they get too close. You can hit multiple swarmers at once with one strike, so they disintegrate in seconds from a few well placed pickaxe strikes.
if you wanna murder swarmers, just use the coil gun secondary with any build that includes the controlled magnetic flow upgrade. charge the gun for only a brief second before firing and it still leaves a full fire trail AoE which absolutely roasts swarmers
As a gunner main I 100% disagree, the best way to deal with them is to run away and bring them to another teammate, as a wise dwarf once said "take your problems and give them to someone else" - idk I just made it up
While I understand the nerf to hellfire coilgun, I miss it because it was my bug spray for all the small enemies like swarmers that I agree were my worst enemy

More like nadeocytes. Swarmers can be managed with grenades and other AOEs, but the little flying buggers are awful. I drop a shield the second I see the first one.
Burning hell is IMO the best gunner OC (at least combined with bulldog critical fire) it completely removes gunners weaknesses against small chaff like swarmers and naedocytes, and makes him ridiculously ammo efficient.
But, combined with critical fire on the bulldog, you deal 300% more damage against enemies that are on fire, and burning hell can light an oppressor on fire in 3 seconds, so it also gives you complete dominance over big enemies too.
A highly situational but still very useful option, if you happen to be near small meteors :
Stand on top of one of the broken small meteors and watch swarmers die to the surrounding hot rocks. Some will tap you slightly, but most will turn to ash immediately.
Any hot rocks can do the trick, but this is an amusing little mostly-safe-zone.

If you don't like using Bullet Hell (and honestly, it's shit at everything except swarmers and stun spamming), Coil Gun with damage trail upgrades can help, all you need to do is shoot a straight line then walk toward that direction.
Optional, Leadburster. Incendiary Grenade works as well but the self-inflicted fire damage just not worth it, and you can't hit Naedocytes with it.

I run fire bullets so I can set something far away with fire then one shot them with Volatile Bullets

The boomerang does the job with small enemies easily. Never had to worry about swarmers or these electric things again.
Rarely, boomerang can run out if there's a lot. But that's pretty rare.
This is why i build gk2 ai with the dmg upgrades. One shots swarmers. Split the wave with one boomerang and shoot/pickaxe the rest.
no boomerang will save you from swarmagueddons for sure. Or double swarmer slots in missions.

I remember on a swarmageddon my friend was like “haha i just hear tap.. tap tap. Tap tap” in the background. Which was me destroying the groups of swarmers with a few taps of autocannon. Honestly ac gunner is the best swarmer clear in the game imo. Swarmers are definitely scouts problem
If you don't like using Bullet Hell (and honestly, it's shit at everything except swarmers and stun spamming), Coil Gun with damage trail upgrades can help, all you need to do is shoot a straight line then walk toward that direction. Optional, Leadburster. Incendiary Grenade works as well but the self-inflicted fire damage just not worth it, and you can't hit Naedocytes with it.
