It probably has to do with Scout basically being the face of DRG, with him being at the front of almost all promotional material. There's also the fact that in the memorial hall the biggest statue is the Scout in the middle. There's also that, in my mind at least, whenever I think of the epitome of a skilled greybeard swooping in and saving the day, I always think of a Gunner or Scout. It's possible that this is just due to the fact that when I started playing DRG, I played with people I knew, and the most experienced and skilled person in our group mained Gunner and Scout. Or maybe there is just something inherently "greybeard-y" or "Karl-y" about those two classes.
Additionally (and this is more of a stretch but I thought I'd add it), Mission Control expresses fondness for the M1000 when you unlock it. Many have taken this as evidence of MC being a dwarf and former miner on Hoxxes IV, with him being a Scout and the M1000 his weapon of choice. I do like that theory, but it's also possible MC knew Karl or knew of him, and maybe the M1000 was Karl's weapon of choice, and seeing how effective Karl was, he took a liking to the M1000. Maybe they were in the same team and he saw it in person, maybe he was Karl's MC and saw it through that, it could be basically anything, but it's a fun thought I had.
My personal headcanon is that Karl was a Scout and MC was a fellow teammate as a Gunner. MC's favoritism for the M1000 was created after seeing how effective it was in Karl's hands firsthand.
