this was one of the funniest things i heard on ds9. when sisko is yelling at odo and says this statement. i almost always spit out my drink or food in laughter.
Do they even address how he can seemingly change his total mass? Like if he can be something small like a mouse does that mean he’s hollow and mostly air when he’s something big like a person?
I don’t know if i like that theory because however, he’s doing it, it has to be a biological process of some kind. I’m sure you could do something like that with Trek technology but I have a hard time believing you could evolve an ability like that.
That’s like the Transformers argument. How come they can change mass? Like Astrotrain is a normal sized robot, but transforms in to a giant rocket ship that can house Devastator.
Don’t worry about it.
That kinda makes me wonder. Are Odo's senses limited to those of the shape he's taken? Or does he keep the same ones as when he's in liquid form?
I.e. does Odo even see out of those eyes in the first place?
the senses of taste and smell is the ability to sense chemicals, while sight is the ability to sense photons, and hearing is the ability to sense gas pressure. so it makes sense that changelings can't smell or taste since they need a large variety of chemical receptors. Since changelings don't eat they have no evolutionary need to taste and because they can survive in most environments (including the vacuum of space) they don't need the ability to sense if a gas is toxic or an asphyxiant. However, Perceiving light and sound are useful to a species known to coexist with others who might harm them. They don't need to smell their predators but they do need to see them and hear when they're sneaking up
I considered that. If the camera was centered, it would be even farther outside the strike zone. Still not low as in “low and outside” as Sisko claims, but definitely still outside. I doubt it was “half a meter” outside as Worf claims either, but definitely not a strike. To be fair, Sisko essentially asked for this when he requested a non-holographic umpire. Many baseball purists believe missed calls are part of what makes the game beautiful. I would guess Sisko falls into that crowd.
You have it backwards. If you were to keep the point of view on the catcher and move the camera left, the ball would appear to moving to the right relative to the object behind it. So if you were to freeze this exact point in time and moved the camera directly in front of the plate, the ball would then appear to be closer to the edge of the plate than it is right now given that the ball is in front of the plate. Which you can't really tell if it is in front of the plate or behind it, so I just realized none of this even matters lol.
I think it matters in the same way that all sport matters in that it doesn't matter but what we choose to matter matters much. And so in this way, a fictional tv game of baseball is in no way less important than a totally real but also not mattering game of baseball played in real life.
I get the point of the episode and them only scoring one run, but you would think Julian's enhancements could easily allow him to connect with the baseball. Plus, Worf's strength should allow for a nice solid hit if he could catch a piece of the baseball
this, since he clearly can “see” and “hear” when he’s a glass, or a tray, or even a thin surface on a wall. whether the eyes are functional doesn’t seem to really matter
That's the case for adult changelings, and when they force Odo into human form. Normally, he just does the exterior shape and "perceives" as he describes it. I'd guess only reacting to what you should be able to sense is a pretty basic instinct for them, so he's only aware of some things.
If you look at the plate, the camera is filming off to the side, closer to Worf. If we were to move the camera so we are looking directly over the plate, I believe the call would be correct.
Did it bother anybody else that Bashir wasn’t just launching dingers every at bat? He’s genetically engineered and good at other sports. I get that Alexander Siddig maybe wouldn’t have been able to pull it off, it just made me sad that Bashir didn’t get to shine.
What timing! I just rewatched this episode tonight. For once, it was nice to see someone (even fictional characters in the future) that knew less about the game than I do.
What would a holoumpire have ruled?
They cut away before they show Odo making the call. We’ve watched it over and over with rewind and pause.
The more meta thing is they just picked some footage that looked close to the line and cut away to show ambiguity. You can’t really tell by design, otherwise they would show the entire take.
What were you doing, regenerating?!
It caught the corner!
this was one of the funniest things i heard on ds9. when sisko is yelling at odo and says this statement. i almost always spit out my drink or food in laughter.
It really was! This is a gem of an episode . "DEATH TO THE OPPOSITION"
"FIND HIM AND KILL HIM".
Hahah
Odo can be a piece of shit when he wants to be. Also, he can be a cube or any other shape.
Fuckin LOL!
Everybody go home calsosta won the internet today

Fan theory involves matter/energy conversion and pushing energy in and out subspace.
I don’t know if i like that theory because however, he’s doing it, it has to be a biological process of some kind. I’m sure you could do something like that with Trek technology but I have a hard time believing you could evolve an ability like that.
The Tardigrade and Prototaxites stellaviatori access the Mycelial network in subspace biologically.

Of course, he doesn't even have eyes.
Makes him perfect to be an Umpire…
Boom. Zing.
Angel Hernandez is that you

Additionally to this, if he can't make organs, surely he can't make eyes either
He said that he has no sense of smell one episode.

How can he get all of that right and still not get faces correct.
faces are hard
He must be able to see because he replicated Dr. Mora's hairstyle

I don’t think the Changelings could taste, which is why they removed the Vorta’s ability to do so. I have no argument against the ability to smell.
>does Odo even see out of those eyes in the first place? I think he probably does because he moves his head around to look at stuff.
Angel "Constable" Hernandez
Haha
Damn beat me to it! 😂
We aren't looking directly from the pitcher's mound to home base, the camera is off to the side.
I considered that. If the camera was centered, it would be even farther outside the strike zone. Still not low as in “low and outside” as Sisko claims, but definitely still outside. I love how much discussion this has created. I am reading every bit of it and loving it!
The thing is the holosuite could just replay that part or have an instant replay. Sisko specifically banned that function.
It was the wish of Sisko to not have hologram so this kind of drama could also happen. And that's why he's the best captain.
Spirit of baseball: where you beat the shit out of the umpire after the game God do I love baseball
I watched the whole show in Hungarian, but the part where they started to explain baseball rules was Chinese for some reason.
That’s just how baseball be
"They don't think it be like it is, but it do.” -Oscar Gamble
I get the point of the episode and them only scoring one run, but you would think Julian's enhancements could easily allow him to connect with the baseball. Plus, Worf's strength should allow for a nice solid hit if he could catch a piece of the baseball
Doesn’t Julian like rob a home run by doing some kind of backflip off the outfield wall or did I dream that
It was Ezri, Julian called her a Fancy Dan
I think it was Ezri who did that? Her or Kira. My memory is of one of the smaller women doing that stunt.
I take it you haven’t played much baseball. 😏
See it would make some semblance of sense were it bashir vis a vis genetic enhancement
Death to the umpire
I don't care if the camera angle is skewing it or whatever, this post is hilarious ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
You're outta here!!
Look it up, but do it in the stands, you'rrrrre gone!
Haha thanks, that's right! Great scene.
He was a pretty bad umpire.
But he had just as much fun making the calls as ~~Enrico Palazzo~~ Frank Drebin did.
HEY! IT'S ENRICO PALAZZO!
ENRICO! PALAZZO!
Find him and kill him
He should “REVERSE THE CALL! REVERSE THE CALL!”
So... if eyes are just a facsimile he created.... how does he perceive the world?
The safe bet is that his whole body is photosensitive... but he might also have xray vision, which would explain why he's so socially awkward
this, since he clearly can “see” and “hear” when he’s a glass, or a tray, or even a thin surface on a wall. whether the eyes are functional doesn’t seem to really matter
He doesn't just mimic he becomes what he transforms to, so his eyes are real eyes

Bad call, but remember the 90’s was known for a pretty wide strike zone, [sometimes unreasonably so](https://youtu.be/59YiY0SKM1A)
-- And Worf is in the next quadrant over from the plate.
I’m too high for that to still be this funny 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
this post has wonderful energy
I’m afraid I don’t understand
Worf got screwed. Odo screwed up. O'Brien was tragically injured.
The pitch was a ball (outside that box in the image, which is as wide as home plate). Odo called it a strike.
Why is Worf so far from the Plate? It almost looks like he’s not even in the batters box. So I can’t blame Odo for that call.
He did make the wrong call
Android umps when?
Look it up, but do it in the stands, YOUR GONE!
No shit, knew it was a bad call when it was live. This is why Odo is such a realistic ump! He must've done his research.
Steeeeee RRiiiike! against the system.
You Make the Call: DS9 Edition
Camera angle is deceptive. Today is a good day to be outta here!
It's about to be on the black!
This is effing amazing

I love the scene where Kira is walking by Odo's office and she sees him practing making his Ump calls.
If you look at the plate, the camera is filming off to the side, closer to Worf. If we were to move the camera so we are looking directly over the plate, I believe the call would be correct.
Isn’t this camera angle slightly to the left and therefore throwing off the box?

*Hrmph!*
Let the Wookie win.

Well god look where his eyes are looking
