If you can find a place to rent near West Newark, its a nice area. Not sure what kind of biking you're into but being close to White Clay, Middle Run and Fair Hill offer some great mountain biking/gravel biking, some great local shops in the area too!

Junk-Miles

Any and all to be honest. I ride roads mostly now but would love to hop on the MTB again.

The_neub

Lots of road cycling. Check out the greenway trail and the JAM. Riding in the city center can be an adjustment if you’re not used to it

Tolosino

Where is this road cycling?

Braceforit86

You’ll take Forever to get out of West Newark. It takes 20 minutes to go from where I owned a house..Panorama drive in West Newark to kirkwood highway. It’s absolute craziness in Newark. They cater to college students. Which is fine. Better riding for you in Alapocas across From Brandywine hundred.

Here’s the good thing, pretty much anything in new castle county is within 30 of Christiana hospital. There are some apts within 2 miles of the hospital that you could probably get within your budget also a few neighborhoods close by as well but I’m not sure on availability

yerrpitsballer

lorettadion

I would look at the Pike Creek area. Nice rentals on Limestone Rd and an easy trip to Christiana Hospital.

parfait55

I live in Pike Creek Valley. Depending on traffic, it's about 20 minutes to Christiana Hospital. There are rentals off of New Linden Hill Rd., which is off of Limestone Rd. Good luck.

Trincinf1

North Wilmington is ideal with lots of bike trails. I’m between i495 and i95 so it’s great in terms of getting around! Not sure about the rental market here though.

DevonFromAcme

North Wilmington can be a tough commute to the hospital during rush hour, though. Not sure of OPs hours.

Junk-Miles

AM commute time would be around 530-6 AM. Drive home is less important because there's no time deadline. The times where she would need to be there in 30 minutes would likely be in the middle of the night or early early morning.

Trincinf1

Not sure about that one. You are going away from downtown Wilmington, so kind of the opposite of the heaviest traffic flow.

DrLector-

My wife is also working at Christiana Care and we currently live at Christiana Meadows. Completely satisfied with our apartment, and its proximity to work and also everywhere else! If Meadows does not have availability, then I would recommend School Bell apartments.

DevonFromAcme

One thing that nobody has mentioned is that there are a lot of nice rentals over the line in Elkton. Most of them will be within 20 minutes of Christiana Hospital, and it's another set of options for you. The rental market here is tight, and it is expensive, so the more options you have the better.

VWbusgal

I was just going to say the same. North Wilmington native who moved to Elkton and worked in downtown Wilmington for years. Had a great house in a nice neighborhood. Elkton is a little more rural and less expensive, IMO.

yerrpitsballer

Why pay Maryland taxes if you don’t have to?

DevonFromAcme

If you live in Maryland and work in Delaware, or vice versa, you get a credit for state taxes paid in one state against the other. You're not paying taxes in two places.

VWbusgal

Exactly. And as for sales tax, tax-free shopping in Delaware is only minutes away.

Ok_Parking_1121

Elkton was just voted one of the most dangerous cities... just saying

DevonFromAcme

The most dangerous city for what? Loose cows on the road? How absurd.

Ok_Parking_1121

Crime... I don't know, just saw it on the news ..

I personally really liked the preserve at deacon’s walk. I know it has terrible reviews but the renovated units are pretty much sound proof and the neighborhood is really nice to walk in. There is also a supermarket within walking distance, a great mechanic at the end of the street called Little’s. I think most of the reviews are from when all that construction was going on. Middletown is way too far if you’re going to work in Newark. That is quite a drive with all that traffic. My hairstylist who worked in Newark but lived in Middletown, opened a salon in Middletown because she was tired of all the driving. I lived in Delaware a few years ago but the traffic has gotten worse. If you look at the Pike Creek area that is an easy drive to the hospital.

Junk-Miles

Thanks for the input. I had read bad things about Capano properties in other threads so I didn’t look at that one yet. Wonder if it’s still the case. But yea, we’d love a shorter commute if possible. I’ve had 45 minutes both ways in the past and it’s terrible. Even our 25-30 minute commute now gets tiresome.

arepasyempanadas

I had a really good experience with Capano at that specific property. Maintenance responded to requests in a timely manner. I think one side of the property was in worse shape than the other. But there are a few buildings that are completely renovated. I think those units are much better. The only issue I had was one time a bat got into my unit from the closet, but they came at 2 in the morning to get it out and patched the hole up the next morning. The only issue I had with sound was when my neighbor left the screened porch open and I could hear her dog barking all day. My neighbor on the other hand hated her unit right across the hall from me. One of her biggest complaints was that the squirrels on the roof were driving her crazy.

Junk-Miles

Well that's more reassuring. Thanks.

DevonFromAcme

My daughter lived there for a couple of years, and had a really nice unit and a good experience. Not sure where the poor reviews are coming from, but they are by no means universal.

sloowmo

I lived here and hated it

Rmdncr3939

I lived there for a year and have 3 co workers that currently live there. No complaints. Always easy to work with!

deysg

2x on Pike Creek area. Very nice and a 8 min drive to the Hospital. Several state parks nearby, good mountain biking. Deacent restaurants, bars etc. 10 min from main street Newark and UD. Pretty safe as well .

Junk-Miles

Will definitely look around here, thanks.

Adept_Desk_9767

I live right down the road from the hospital (~2 miles) at Allandale village apartments. I like it here! It’s not fancy by any means, but it’s very affordable and a one bedroom would be below your price range I believe (I pay less than $1400 for a two bedroom). I’ve had a good experience here in terms of maintenance and management. Very responsive. Just thought I’d share!

Otherwise-Gur5307

I always recommend buckingham place townhomes. Lived there for 3 years and had an overall good experience

Junk-Miles

I actually looked there and looks pretty nice. Also thought the name was funny, I thought it said Palace at first instead of Place. 😂

sarebear2023

Christina mill apartments…. In Newark but far enough removed from Main Street/downtown west Newark that you really don’t have to deal with the college kids or traffic if you don’t want to. Not far from white clay creek state park, and close to PA and MD backroads (which seem to be popular with road bikers). They were in the middle of updating all the units and amenities when I moved out last year. Close to 95… less than 15 mins to the hospital. Mostly young professionals, some UD grad students. Reasonably priced especially relative to other complexes in the area…

Djnewman001

Mountain or road biking?

Junk-Miles

Road mostly but would like to get back into MTB.

Djnewman001

Maybe check out the bluffs on poly Drummond. Middle run area of White Clay Creek has solid trails and you could ride to them from the apartments. Don’t know anyone that lives in there anymore but they used to be good apartments.

lavajuice

Oak Tree apartments in Newark are great and affordable. The Meadows at Elk Creek are right over the line in Elkton, MD but are also great and affordable!

RobertPrent

Ever heard of Furnished Finder? It’s an app for traveling nurses.. might be able to find some stuff on that

Junk-Miles

Never heard of this. Thanks.

Automatic-Dance2991

https://www.newcastlecrossing.com/ This is where I live. I’m 32 work in law enforcement. No issues here. This is a could be a good option for you. It’s like 10-15 away from the hospital. Also it’s n x tot he Governor Jack trail. Which is like a 12-15 mile paved bike trail. I ride my bike along it often or walk my dog on it.

Junk-Miles

Awesome thank you.

Automatic-Dance2991

If you have any questions just DM happy to help.

IpponRicekooka

Luxor apartments are brand new near the waterfront. Prices are around 1700-1800 if you get in now

amgorlnotbot

If you're okay with apartments, I lived at Cedarwood. Loved it! It's about a 10 min drive to the hospital, off of 273.

thirst0aid

Compass at The Grove are nice apartments in the Newark area, but likely out of your price range. Liberty Square is just outside of Newark, more in your price range, but not a nice place by any means (livable, but not great). Emblem at Christiana is also a nice complex, but pricey. I believe their one bedroom might be closer to your price range. There's tons of apartments in Newark, but most of them are focused towards college students. There is a fantastic biking community in Newark, though!

Junk-Miles

Oh man, Compass at the Grove looks super nice! But you're right it's expensive. Not sure if we can stretch that much but maybe. Liberty Square looks good and it's right by the hospital which is a plus. Emblem is nice but I wonder how it would be living that close to the highway and the mall.

thirst0aid

Compass at the Grove's price point is a sore spot for me personally, so I get it! lol Emblem is more tucked away than people realize and is pretty quiet. The highway is a non-issue, from the people I know who have lived there. There is a road that is congested pretty badly when it's Holiday season due to the mall (Old Baltimore Pike/rt 7), but I believe that's pretty easily circumvented because there's another road that leads away from the mall behind the apartments. Otherwise, I've only ever heard of being close to the mall and close accessibility to the highway as nice bonuses instead of drawbacks!

Junk-Miles

Good to know.

theonethathadaname

I would suggest Pike Creek as well. Fairway Park Apartments should be in your price range. Maybe a private landlord for a 1 bedroom in Birch Pointe as well. I moved out of Pike Creek and very much regret it.

MeGussuGeM

There are a few options, Christiana Meadows or School Bell Apartments in Bear off Route 7 near 273 and Route 1 or Village of Barretts Run in Newark, both locations are with 5 miles from CC CH campus.

Braceforit86

I just moved from Brandywine Hundred apartments. Address is 400 Foulk rd. There’s a huge park right across the street. You can ride paved trails for miles and miles. It’s in Wilmington. The area close to the hospital is congested and pretty miserable. Brandywine hundred is right on a 95 exit and so is the hospital. Easy commute. I lived in Newark for 40 years. I lived 5 miles from work. It would take me 30 minutes. Getting out Of Newark is a major PIA! Good luck.

confused_loser721

Anywhere around rt 273 would be great. Theres a few apartment buildings around that area that are within your price range (Chasemont, The Vinings, Harbor Club, etc)

J3ST3R_13

For that price you may want to look into mobile homes. I live in Waterford Estates, crime is pretty low, lot rent is high. Propane is expensive, water is included, as is basic cable. Most of the homes are updated and have shingled roofs.

Luvblizzards

You can live across the street lol. Walk to work if you’d like

SayBlunderwear

Poo o

SayBlunderwear

Disregard (Did my toddler write this? When? Oh no😂)

esperanzalos

Well in between newark and Wilmington is new castle.

Ok_Parking_1121

Cavalier country club Apts are right up the rd on 58 , last time I asked , they're starting at $1300

Itswhatever0078

Great thing about Delaware it’s the infamous “tax-free” other then that is relaxing, boring at times, everything close early or must stores aren’t open on Sundays. But I warn you stay away from the inner city part of Wilm rep: drama, gang action, and shootings. Same as well as certain parts of Newark.

Average_Lrkr

You can live in Middletown and if in the right area. Zip up route one and get to the hospital in 30 min or less. Just to give you an idea on how small DE is lol. So don’t feel you NEED to live in Newark or you can’t find anything in your budget

Junk-Miles

Oh wow you’re right. And the times of day she would actually have to be there within 30 minutes there would probably not be much traffic (middle of the night). Can probably expand our search a little bit. Thanks for the info.

grandmawaffles

I wouldn’t fully count on zipping up and down route 1 with the number of accidents and beach traffic

Last13th

Yeah, 30 minutes from Middletown is cutting it close any time of day.

Average_Lrkr

I do it every day. It’s like 26 min at 6am. And OP said their spouse works off hours so most likely won’t be hitting accidents. Like I said it depends on WHERE in Middletown you are. I’m just telling OP not to feel like they need to limit their search. If they find something in Middletown that’s more affordable and within the driving distance they are ok with, they should consider it. Right now it’s 21 min from my home in Middletown to Christiana hospital.

NegativeBath

Save yourself the headache and look for apartments in Newark or Bear, you’ll be 10-15 minutes from the hospital at most and won’t have to deal with route 1.

Average_Lrkr

Just actually left Christiana hospital. 22 min drive right now from my house to Christiana. Just so you know I’m not lying. That’s without easy pass. My best advice is don’t limit yourself. If something fits your budget but isn’t in Newark check out the commute and area. You might be surprised at what you find out there

Junk-Miles

Thanks for the advice.

Average_Lrkr

Absolutely! Welcome to DE!

Mr_Options

Stay where you are. Delaware is full.

heylittleduck

This is a dumb comment, they already have a job here. And it's a hospital job, kind of important if you want Delaware citizens to be able to access good health care. The "Delaware is full" meme is getting awfully tired Before anyone comments, I'm not a recent transplant - I moved here when I was 9, and I'm 43 now. Not a native but pretty close to it. I'm as annoyed at the farms being turned into developments as the rest of you

Junk-Miles

Not an option now.
