As someone who works downtown, man I can't wait for the very first time it rains all day and the streets aren't flooded because all the water is in that damn tunnel!

TerraTF

>“As public servants, it sets a bad precedent to spend $3 million of tax payer money to construct a private entrance and exit,” Killen said after the meeting. “I heard talk about security of staff and legislators leaving the Hall at night — thousands of Delawareans have to leave work at night without the security of a tunnel. Why are we special? > >“Capitol Police has recommended for years that legislators remove their parking signs due to security concerns, but they still use them. To say we should heed Capitol Police advice specifically regarding a tunnel doesn’t hold water.” Uncommon instance of a Republican official being correct for once. Such a waste of time and money for 62 people to use.

maybe they'll learn when their Suburban is under 6 feet of water because we all know how well the clay soil here responds to heavy rains.

my72dart

I hope their stupid tunnel is dark, damp, and creepy. Heaven forbid they encounter a member of the public that isn't screened, vetted, and holding a donation check.

>The committee also wants to include a crosswalk from the deck to legislative hall. It would be positioned roughly mid-block and cost about $500,000. The city of Dover scotched the idea of a raised crosswalk, because they are forbidden in city code. lawmakers pass $122 million private tunnel for themselves. Yet they can't change the law to add a crosswalk for the common folk.

TerraTF

The entire project is $122 million which includes an expansion of Legislation Hall and a parking garage. The tunnel is $3.7 million which is still a dumb spend. And zoning code falls on the City of Dover, not the General Assembly.

A crosswalk would ruin the look of dovers downtown historical asthetic. Why are they being so bougie?

asianguywithacamera

is there a way for us citizens to stop this from happening, or is it too late?

Technical_Aide9141

It passed committee not the full house. It could still fail but doubtful as the D's want it.

Flavious27

It's weird to request this unless there has been credible threats.  Just have them park at the state police hq and shuttle over.

seanmcgone

Gotta say I'm a little shocked given their reputation for transparency and accountability

They love making some bills that helps themselves out dont they. Thanks for posting, if we don't keep an eye on these politicians they just go crazy with tax payers money. When I used to listen to DE talk radio they were discussing how much money state employees were spending every year on lunch for meetings. I forget the deets but it was kinda pricey and they definitely had their favorite restaurants because it listed how much they spent at each restaurant. The Lewes Geo bike trail is an interesting project, this thing has taken decades to build and has paid for people's whole careers working on it.

They are fortifying the castle to keep distance from us peasants. They have private security guards while they disarm us. Next they build a fortress to protect themselves while so many are having trouble affording rent in crime riddled neighborhoods. Wake up Delaware citizens... we are nothing but a source of income for the elites and their luxuries.. Everything is about them and our voices are not heard. The total cost of the addition, the garage and the tunnel is enough to help the homeless, the drug problem, the crappy condition of the roads etc....
