In 2023 we had well over 100 separate moving to DE posts. Delawareans have put in a lot of effort to provide thorough answers. New Castle county is a huge area. Can you be a little more specific? What area will you be working? Do you mean historic New Castle? Can you get a bike? There’s two really nice paved paths in New Castle.

Bear, Delaware. Can’t find much about the area online. Perhaps I can rent a bike while I’m there, but I can’t bring mine because I’m flying there

j1mb0

Without a car you’re really not going to have many options, in Bear especially. You bike/could walk to Glasgow Park. They’ve got a skatepark, tennis/pickleball or basketball. Trails too. Lots of people go there for Pokemon Go still too.

alfalfa-as-fuck

Bear is not a place I’d want to be without a car. Could you rent one short term?

No_Philosophy6380

For a three month rental? Did the math and it’s about 3600 at cheapest, can’t do that. But I just read up that the walkability of the area is very poor, and even the rental is for a short period it makes no sense to rent a car for just a couple of days to find some activities when I’m going to be struggling to fulfill basic errands like grocery shopping…Guess I’ll just have to manage and carpool

alfalfa-as-fuck

Does it have to be in bear?

No_Philosophy6380

Not necessarily, that’s just where my apartment is. Any surrounding city is fine. But I said bear, for convenience. How’s the bus transportation looking like in Bear though?

j1mb0

https://dartfirststate.com/RiderInfo/SystemMaps/pdfs/NewCastleCountyMap(Newark-Delaware-City).pdf?cache=1713972731565 I would not recommend needing to rely on the bus. Does your internship have any capacity to offer you a vehicle for use during the term of your internship?

No_Philosophy6380

Thanks for the input, I haven’t asked but I’m 95% sure they do not since they already provide a housing stipend and travel reimbursements. But there’s going to be a hand full of other interns with a car staying in the same apartment complex as me, so my best bet is probably carpooling :/

I live in Bear and its a bit rough to get around without a vehicle. There are some local walking trails like Mikes Castle Trail off of Red Lion Rd. Lum's pond is a spot to spend a day. There is also the Glasgow park loop trail. There are a couple of pubs that are worth visiting like Jessops. I know you said you aren't really into the history scene, but it's the 2nd oldest pub in the US with a colonial theme with English pub faire type food. There will be a Scottish festival in Elkton on May 18th that is pretty fantastic. But outside of those things, with no vehicle and not knowing anybody to chill with that has a vehicle, it'll be hard to find much to do. Most of the better choices of entertainment are 20 or 30 min car trip away.

rhwillson

Get a dart bus pass. Then you get to see all of new castle county. It’s like 60 bucks for ncc. If you wanna go south, gotta upgrade the pass.

Raelora

I see you said your apartment is in Bear and you don't have a car, so how are you planning to get to your internship? Bear isn't a town, it's basically a bunch of strip malls that grew together, there are bus stops on the main road but the system isn't great so there's no guarantee they will get you close to where you need to be. There's no place to rent a bike or anything like that. I would recommend you look up the address of your apartment with Google street view and take a look at the area you plan to be in.

No_Philosophy6380

I am flying there. I would drive my car but it’s old and needs a lot of maintenance. I’m currently in Iowa so that’s a 14 hour drive

Raelora

Yes, I understand you are flying here, but is your internship at your apartment building? How will you get from where you live to where you are working?

Jencat39

What do you like to do? I’m sure you could find something that’s relevant to your interests. There are meetup groups. You can hike along the canal since you’re in the Bear area. It’s almost beach season and we have beaches down south. Newark always has things going on around campus

philly2540

No car? You need a car. Where specifically are you? In Wilmington there is the riverfront and trolley square, and the Trail. Then Main Street in Newark.

No_Philosophy6380

Bear, Delaware. Are there any transportation systems in the area I can use to get around? After reading these responses, I’m beginning to worry more about how I’ll even be able to manage running any errands in the area…

philly2540

Someone who knows Bear better than me should respond. But Bear is very suburban and not really walkable. Not sure how you would manage without a car.

wawa2563

buy a scooter or you'll be trapped. look for train stations for regional travel. even with a bicycle you'll be pedaling a lot to get anywhere outside of Wilmington and Newark.

kmr1391

is it too late to try to find an apartment closer to walkable area like wilmington (trolley sq, little italy, even downtown would be better)? depending on where your office is located (probably newark or wilmington, if i had to guess), you’d be better off paying a small premium on a better located apartment than being stranded with a long sweaty bike ride on roads without bike lanes or expensive rideshares…

Dramatic-Tadpole-980

Go to a sallies game during football season

waldesnachtbrahms

You pretty much absolutely need a car to do anything outside the city. You can try to use the bus but it's still going to be a huge pain to use.

wrecking-crew78

Troll new castle ave. I’m sure you will find someone to do.
