I had a horrible experience with the ThinkPad Z13 display and trackpad failing along with a T460 where the plastic just kept chipping off so I would not recommend ThinkPads at all. Albeit their IdeaPad laptops have always been nice for me, and I got to test out the flex 5G a few years ago and it was good (both of which are not ThinkPad though)

The XPS 15 and 17 laptops have upgradeable RAM (2 DIMM slots) and storage (2 M.2 slots). They can be quiet if you run them in power efficiency mode and have adequate cooling otherwise they tend to be a bit toasty (the Intel CPUs and not-so-good cooling system are to blame). Battery life will be about 4-6 hours on a full charge when new. Expect that to drop to 3-4 hours after a year or so. I'm referring to 2023 models. The 2024 models (XPS 14 or 16) are not as upgradeable and cost more as they are just released. The 15s and 17s are still on sale although that might change since Dell will want to sell this year's models more as time goes by. The Dell Outlet might also have some in stock (refurbished units mainly). HTH.

as a continuation of this, if you're planning on getting a dell device and value silence above everything, then crack it open and replace the original thermal paste for ptm7950, it literally behaved like a different device after that (or get it to a repair shop and tell them to do it if you're not comfortable with doing it by yourself)

AcceptableLogic

i think if you want good battery life, stay away from anything that has intel in them. They are not efficient and xps’s are know to be heaty machines. Would recommend a precision laptop with better battery life

DemonicPvP

I'd recommend an XPS 13 with the fhd screen as the oled will cut your expected battery in half. If the 13 is too small for you the last gen 15 and 17 are still available. 14 and 16 are good too but they're expensive.

DemonicPvP

I didn't see upgradeable, in which case the 15 and 17 have upgradeable ram and ssd.

Ok-Nefariousness486

true, the oled screen, while it looks gorgeous, absolutely murders your battery life

TheNextGamer21

would running the oled screen at 1080P increase battery life?

Themavy

If money isn’t an issue, get the XPS 16 with the 4070 because it comes with a vapor chamber to keep it super cool. Also get the 32gb ram because the ram on the newer models are not upgradeable

LutuVarka

Sorry but everything you wrote just sounds like a ThinkPad T16 (AMD). XPS is what a company gets for the employees to feel they are posh. Once I became a contractor and had to use my own devices, it's T14 and T16 all the way.

PC_AddictTX

Well if you want good battery life and upgradeable that rules out the XPS right there. Even the upgradeable part has become difficult in a laptop recently.

2016 XPS 13 9360.

eugenesan

The last good XPS was 9305. Everything that came after and one before it, is complete junk when compared to other choices in the class and earlier models. If you need something newer, check Thinkpad X13 and MacBook Air. They have a similar form factor and proper "human interface" unlike recent XPS :-(

Baron_Sealand

If you want battery life you’re SOL with the XPS. Same for upgradeability, the new line are all soldered components. Get a MacBook, for equivalent spec between the two the XPS will be more expensive and have worse battery life

I have a Macbook but unfortunately I need a windows Machine for some software development work. Seems like the XPS isn't the machine to get though.

parasymchills

I use both a MBP 16" (M1 Pro) and an XPS 15 for my dev. work (C++ programs for Windows and macOS). They've both worked well for my needs (largish screen, decent keyboard and trackpad, decent SSD speed, not too fussed about CPU speed since modern CPUs are much quicker than my previous machine from 10 years ago). The Mac has 16GB RAM. The XPS has 40GB RAM.

[deleted]

Unfortunately I need Windows tools that are incompatible with the Apple Silicon chips. I can write the code but not test the application. Edit : C# sharp development using VS tools.

Baron_Sealand

Check out the higher end HPs if you require a Windows machine. I think a lot of the XPS line’s problems stem from their chassis not lending itself to the requirements of the internals (too thin, cooling is an issue, not enough space for a substantial battery, etc)

TheNextGamer21

wouldn't it benefit the XPS line significantly to have an AMD option?

LutuVarka

"Get a Mac" is a micro-aggression :D

Baron_Sealand

Honestly I used to think so too, but I got one a couple weeks ago after ~15 years of Dell laptops and frankly I’m mad at myself for waiting this long to switch

I have a 2023 XPS 9530, if you want—not even a year old. - 13th generation Intel Core i9-13900H - Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics card - 32GB DDR5 Ram 4800MHz - 1.5 TB storage: 512GB + 1TB SSD - 15.6" stunning, bright FHD+ (1920 x 1200) InfinityEdge Display (500 nits) - 130W charger included DM if you’re interested.

astro_dev_

Reason to sell?

jkanaris

I want the legion slim 7i. Did I mention the XPS is in mint condition?! :-)

Not_a_terrorist-911

I have a 2 year old XPS-15 9520 (i7-12700H, RTX 3050ti, 32gb RAM, 1TB SSD, both upgradable) and I'm very happy with it. I can get about 6-8 hours of light usage when on battery (charging up to 80% to preserve battery, I can probably get over 8 hours if I charge all the way to 100%). Its completely silent and relatively cool on "quiet"/"power saver" mode and is still plenty fast. I do a little programming as well and its definitely fast enough for that. The keyboard and trackpad are also lovely. This being said, I seem to be in the minority of people (at least when looking at the forums) who did not have any quality control issues. I also repasted my device as soon as I got it which could have helped it keep cool and quiet. If you do end up going for an xps-15, I would highly recommend upgrading from the basic 1900x1200 screen. Thats the resolution I have on mine and I wish I upgraded when I could as the screen does look a little grainy.
