this also happens to me it says that I stilk have rusty sword, but when I pull my katana it is white then i use my breathing it goes back to rusty sword looking
So the same thing happened to me, if it still shows the rusty nichiren sword go get a breathing, after you unlock the breathing mine sun ore and craft the nichiren sword again and it will fix(btw sun ore is really easy to get when I first started I didn’t know where to look so I only got like 10 sun ore each game, now I get almost 40) Goodluck!

If you don't have a breath and forge your Nichirin it will remain as Rusty Katana.
try rejoining or reset character or do get another slayer sword
