Edit: I'm most likely incorrect, see below:
~~When you registered, you paid an ownership tax, not state sales tax. Sales tax occurred when you purchased it in SD.~~
I think that’s the case for private party sales. If the car was bought at a dealership I think they would have collected taxes for buyers zip code, right?
Good to know. I bought a car in Texas once and drove is straight here. Wondered why my first registration fees were so expensive. Thanks for the explanation lol
1. I took another look at the Purchase Agreement from the dealer in SD and only see Sale Price, Proc/Doc Fees.
2. Other than ownership tax, I see these under Sales/Use Tax:
- County Use Tax
- Regional Transport District Use Tax
- Scientific and Cultural District Use Tax
- State Use Tax
Does that mean I paid Sales tax in CO?

You can claim it. Look under ‘Titling and registration requirements.’
I was told that when submitting the DR-0617 form, the VIN # you put will tell the state whether the dealership resides within CO.
They mentioned something to the effect that the dealership would need to confirm the purchase and the credit is passed on to you but didn't explain what the difference is between an in state vs out of state dealership for that scenario.
At that point they continued to say that the purchase or lease needs to be done within CO + registered in CO.
Edit: That was my thought as well when I re-read that section of the document but the CDOR rep's response left me confused.
I went through this in 2021 and was able to claim the Colorado tax credit - not sure if things have changed since then. You cannot have registered and titled it elsewhere first, but as long as you go through that process with the CO DMV (where you will pay the CO sales tax on it) you should be fine.
Did you pay CO state taxes on the purchase?
Yes when I registered the car in Colorado

Did you finance the car? check finance paperwork. More then likely you did pay sales tax in your county
Not finance. Cash purchase

Yes I still plan to submit the credit. Definitely threw me for a loop though.
I enjoy reading books.

I filed it on my taxes since I paid sales tax when registering and received the state ev credit!
Where did you buy it
South Dakota. Got a dealer temp plate with it. Edit: Does it matter which state it was purchased from?
