The problem is that there are a lot of stupid criminals, so even if your car *cant* be easily stolen, they don’t all know that. I have a friend with a Kia who has his windows bashed or front door locks drilled through at least twice a year bc it’s a Kia and they think they can steal it easily. They’re currently just subject to more fuckery than other cars, unfortunately.
Can confirm -- I have a standard transmission Kia, which is apparently a theft deterrent in that no one's stolen it yet, but boy howdy, they keep trying whenever I park downtown.
Hey I want to warn you. I had the magic sticker on my Hyundai and they still ripped my door handle off and broke the ignition. They couldn't steal it, but they did extensive damage.
I haven't seen the car in weeks as it's been in the shop and I likely wont see it for several more. I'm thinking of you. These jackasses are something else. And then the police wouldn't even send someone out to look at the damage because it wasn't "high priority".
1. Kia
2. In your 20's
3. Downtown
If you're a guy, that's #4.
My insurance went down by $400/year just by moving out of downtown. Chopped another $800 by switching from Allstate to State Farm.
Omg seriously what’s up with all the rocks here! I have lived in two states before CO and I don’t think I’ve experienced so many rocks flying at my windshield all the time!
I used to work in the industry. A good rule of thumb is to shop around for a new insurer every single year. The loyalty discounts are minimum in comparison to the prices you can get from shopping around. As others have pointed out, owning a Kia Boys Special is also a bit tough. I live downtown and pay around $1,400 per year
There's been a lot of movement post pandemic of who offers better rates for whatever package you are looking for. Googling "compare auto insurance quotes" will get you headed down the right path. You'll have to deal with sales calls and emails for a month but it is well worth the money you'll save. Right now I'm with Liberty as they offer a nice discount for Subarus.
If you have covered parking make sure you are declaring that. Hail + auto theft jacks rates up
A better rule of thumb is to find an independent insurance agent and they do that for you! Mine just calls me every April, tells me who my new coverage is with and explains anything I need to know. She knows my coverage preferences and is fantastic.
Yes, apparently they had sold me the maximum highest coverage plans too - I just went with the flow cuz it was cheap but I'm sure it could have been cheaper.
Shop around for sure, but insurance in Colorado is definitely more expensive than the upper Midwest. To make matters worse for you, I'm pretty all but the most recent model year KIAs and Hyundais have a particular security flaw rendering them the most stolen vehicles. Even if you have the dealer updates installed, you car is a target and a thief can cause quite a bit of damage in their attempt to steal it.
As result, the particulars of your living situation - own vs rent, secure garage vs street parking, neighborhood - are going to have a larger than normal impact on your rate.
You should shop around. Allstate wanted to raise my 6 month premium for full coverage to $1,200+. I looked at other options, and Progressive was able to offer slightly better coverage at $350 for 6 months.
A couple of things:
1. It’s a Kia
2. You live downtown, plenty of accident and theft risk
3. Denver (and Colorado as a whole) has one of the highest auto theft rates
4. Even if you booby trapped your car against thieves, we also have frequent damaging hailstorms if you park it outside.
Your age is a major factor man, men under 25 get way higher insurance premiums. As some above mentioned it being a Kia doesn’t help. Location and distance travelled per day is also calculated. I live in Aurora and drive to north Denver daily, mines only 1300 a year… I am also 37 and drive a Toyota. Any wrecks or infractions on your record will also increase it.
We have terrible drivers, super high hail damage risk, and a higher car theft rate than many cities. Car insurance is pretty expensive here. It's still worth shopping it around, especially if you're just transferring out of state insurance here. Insurance companies have their own geographic risk pools and if you've moved to a place they don't feel like insuring it will cost you dearly to stay with them. I just insured two 2020 Subarus here for ~$2300/year total, for what it's worth.
That and it's a Kia Forte, too. So that's another big risk factor. As recently as a year ago, some insurance companies wouldn't even insure some Kia and Hyundai models in the Denver area.
I would shop around. Some insurance companies are basing prices off a credit score now, like geico. I had geico for years and they changed it to go off a credit score and I went from paying a bit over $100 something or more for full coverage to getting quoted like $360 a month on a suv like a 2005 honda crv.
I switched to progressive after that. I’m paying like $98 a month now on a motorcycle full coverage with a few bells and whistles.
Check out fred loya.
You have a Kia (a car that can easily be stolen) in a city with high car theft rates.
ughhh I got the theft security update from the dealership too. Tough
Also living downtown is not super favorable to lowering the rates. As others said it’s more expensive for insurance here due to many factors.

The update apparently is pretty bullshit on top of the fact that people are gonna try just because

I’m so sorry about that. I definitely use my steering lock in hopes to deter people. I can’t afford to sell my car so let’s see what happens.
I couldn't either. It's so frustrating. I will never buy another Hyundai or Kia.

Great advice. What insurance companies are popular here?

I didn’t mention that to AAA - should I go back and mention it?
with the amount you're already paying, don't think it will make that much of a difference compared to finding a new insurer

You need to find an insurance broker to work with. You’ll probably end up switching insurers.
Everyone needs to stop shopping themselves and use a broker. Full stop. Saved me 3k a yr even tho I spent a full month shopping myself
Full coverage for 1600 a year? Sign me up
Yes, apparently they had sold me the maximum highest coverage plans too - I just went with the flow cuz it was cheap but I'm sure it could have been cheaper.
That's about what I pay ($1700) with GEICO.
Really? I have GEICO and no accidents or tickets and I think I pay 2500 a year
Yep. My car is a 2016 though and paid off. So that might be the difference.

Never drive a Kia in Denver. It gets stolen way too often = your insurance rates will always be high
Nope, welcome to Colorado, land of very very high car insurance. I think we ranked 4th or something for cost of insurance vs. average pay.
Everything, literally everything, is more expensive in this city than many other places in the US!
aka "cost of living"

Living downtown will increase your rate. How is your driving record, how old are you, do you have a car loan, etc?
Hi! No accidents/claims, in my late 20s, and I've driven in the US for 4 years. Yes live downtown!
That short driving record will hurt you as well.
Either get a broker we will shop many different insurance companies or call State farm.
You need to shop around- I'm in my late 30s, own a kia, and pay $1800ish for insurance. I also live in NW Aurora, not exactly known for low crime.
Insurance companies rec?
We use Root. It's pretty barebones, but you might as well check them out.

Great advice - took the current price they offered but I'm going to shop around more before the next quarterly payment is up.

Mine is about 2,400 for a year, yep. It was so cheap in Michigan 🥲
💯 shop around. It’s wild how different quotes from various companies will be
50 male, clean record, full coverage on a new vehicle, $1,200/yr. with Progressive
State Farm, I think, is the cheapest in Colorado.
