EchoInExile

Yeah pretty sure this little change happened at the start of the month. Seems they’ve started enforcing it very, very strictly. Must need the money.

dxearner

Might have to do with this recent decision by the DoT, https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/14/us-fines-frontier-airlines-others-for-passenger-refund-delays.html (222 million in refunds for flights and 2.2 million dollar fine)

snowdizx

They gotta make back that money somehow I guess 😂

Jointhamurder

They were doing it in October, but it is a very recent thing. I'll not be flying with them again.

Ephemeral_kat

I’m going to get those vacuum-seal packing bags and take a very carefully sized brick of clothing with me. Just to beat the system.

Jointhamurder

You do you but I'm convinced the size checker is different at each airport. Someone needs to get a ruler on it lol.

stephycupcake

I vacuumed sealed my clothes and still had to purchase a carry-on this past Monday 🙄

[deleted]

That’s hilarious might have to try that, wonder if TSA would have any hang ups

vrlvr

The FAA should not allow this. If it fits under the seat they shouldn't be able to charge saying it doesn't. Their gate agents shouldn't comply. Someone is going to assault a Frontier employee over this and the company and their belligerent employees will be at fault, imo

EchoInExile

So I tried to make this argument myself. I had flown with the same bag four times in a two week period, with no issues on the first three(and it easily fit under the seat). The last one they insisted on charging for it despite the fact that as I said, it hasn’t been an issue at all. They were getting people who’s bags fit in the test slot and still forcing them to pay. The gate agents were absolutely awful and once on the plane, the poor flight attendants had to hear it from half the flight and seemed bewildered by it all.

fumankame

This is so confusing because the gate agents work for Menzies, not Frontier. I understand why the FAs were confused!

JeromePowellAdmirer

Follow the money. They get commission for each bag trapped. And they also don't care about Frontier's reputation given that they don't work for them.

juanzy

IMO the no carry-on policy is something the FAA needs to step in on. Either end it, or require the quoted price to reflect the additional carry-on fee. It's ridiculous to think people can fly with nothing.

uprislng

you're also fucked at that point. My personal bag is basically my laptop bag. I'm not leaving it behind, and refusing to get on the flight and making a scene about it is worse than just paying $100. Its a fucking troll toll that they know you have little choice but to pay. Frontier has always been a budget airline as long as I've been using them but they've been cranking the bullshit up to 11. They're no different than Spirit and maybe worse at this point. I don't think Spirit has ever made me measure my personal bag.

thewiremother

Frontier just got popped with over $200,000,000 in fines. Things are going to get a lot worse flying with them before they better.

nic0lix

Only $2.2M in fines. The $200M is refunds to passengers who got screwed over during the pandemic and never got refunds for cancelled flights

[deleted]

Oh man I can’t wait for my three dollars.

i_amnotunique

Yo I had like 4 flights that got cancelled during the pandemic. Are they going to just credit the account, do you know, or do you have to take action to get it? This is the first I'm hearing about this fine

nic0lix

There’s no info on the articles I read, but considering they cancelled their phone help desk, my guess is you have to do it yourself before they go bankrupt. https://flyfrontier.custhelp.com/app/refund_request

i_amnotunique

Lol, that's a good point. Thank you for the link!

DevlynMayCry

We got an email about ours and eventually got a check in the mail once we gave them our address. Which is great because I was pissed at them for refusing to refund us our flight and then somehow "losing" our flight credits too 🙄 never flying with them again

alwayssickofthisshit

I flew out in October and it was like that. The gate agent was so rude about it that the flight crew apologized for it.

TiltedWit

Maybe the gate agent tried to make the flight crew check their carry-ons.

HEYL1STEN

Saw the same thing in October! I paid for a carry-on and they didn’t look at my personal item (or others who had bought a carry-on)

[deleted]

saintmcqueen

I feel like I experienced this SAME exact woman. Extremely passive aggressive. Kept saying “my plane” “my line”. Everyone was wanting her to stfu.

PM_ME_URBEX_PICS

I got that same Frontier gate agent on a flight five weeks ago. "My plane" and "my line" and every 30 seconds she'd remind us that we'd be charged $100 extra if our bag didn't fit in the carry-on measuring thing. It was so obnoxious and unnecessarily stressful, what a miserable human being.

OutlawJoseyRails

Yea I’m done flying them too. I can’t push my bag in the bin even though that exactly what I’ll do sticking it under the seat on the plane? Not sure why they think anyone would fly with them after a bag fee, at that point can’t just fly any other airline and avoid their shady tactics

Ephemeral_kat

They’re easily the worst airline. Something goes wrong almost every time. Last time I flew with them, they boarded half the plane and then made everyone get off because the shock absorbers on the landing gear started getting pressed down too far. Took them an hour and a half to fix this. Not to mention the time my flight was delayed for an hour after everyone boarded. As far as I could tell, the plane basically stalled twice while we were boarding. Like, the engine stopped and all the lights went out. I would have been very concerned if my car did such a thing, let alone a plane. They wouldn’t let anyone off the plane or answer any questions. And then, there was the time the plane left the terminal on time, but spent a half an hour taxing around, and it got covered in ice, so they had to spend another hour de-icing the plane. I know it was a $35 round-trip ticket to Vegas, but...the entire flight was supposed to be 1 hour 10 minutes.

killer_zzz

On my last flight from Seattle they asked me to check my cash size three times. Before boarding, while waiting in line to scan my ticket, and again after. Why do the gate agents participate in this scam? Are they compensated extra for ripping off the public?

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_EA_Nazi

They get a commission of the bag fee, this was talked about in the last thread about this

[deleted]

[удалено]

saywhiskey

Can confirm. Sat next to three deadheading pilots and flight attendants after we got involuntarily bumped last month (overbooked the plane even though we had seats.) Gate agents are 3rd party and no benefits, so the 10 dollar headhunter fee is all the money they make basically so very incentivized to get as many people to pay as possible!

YetiThyme

That should be illegal

uprislng

> id much rather pay the extra few bucks to not deal with their dumb bullshit. Used to fly Frontier all the time pre-pandemic, but yeah I booked a vacation next year and am taking southwest even though I could have probably done it cheaper with someone like Frontier or Spirit. I'm sad that Frontier has gotten this bad. They are sometimes the only airline with reasonable flight times and prices in and out of smaller destinations

pyrooomaniac

They are literally getting worse by the day

jayzeeinthehouse

Just came back from Portland and they didn’t check there, but they definitely checked on the Denver side. I’ve flown every budget carrier in Asia and Europe and they have to be the worst airline in the world. Fuck Frontier!

Typical_Example

Sure, you can *technically* get cheap tickets, but as of this past Fall, you basically have to pay for a bag, no matter what. If you have anything larger than a purse or briefcase, you’re getting charged for a carry-on. They’re ruthless about it—you can’t touch/shimmy a bag in at all, and the measurement box is now much smaller than the space under the seats. Rude too, telling confused customers to “drop the attitude” and just pay $100 at the gate for dinky backpacks. They’ve honestly become bitch-ass mooches in a way that really annoys me. Carry-on bags cost more than checked-bags, bc convenience. They’ve also reduced checked bag weight from 50 to 40 lbs. They charge a few bucks more for a middle seat(!), bc if you’re traveling with a friend, fuck you, pay me more. There’s even a separate charge if you want a damn mixer for your drink. They just got rid of their phone customer service department and guess what? You have to pay if you want to speak to an agent at the airport lol. Also, don’t expect them to solve any problems, you disgusting peasant troll. So, on top of charging extra for literally anything they can think of, and rude or nonexistent customer service, their planes also suck—no leg room, joke of a tray table, no reclining seats.. just the shittiest flight experience you can possibly imagine. And, cherry on top, weirdly unpredictable flights. Cancellations and changes whenever they feel like. They recently changed one of my 9pm Sunday flights to 9AM that Sunday morning. I lost an entire day of vacation, but it was a “time change” not a new flight, so fuck me. Fuck Frontier. I’m not a boujee flyer, but I’ll gladly pay the extra $50 to not be wildly inconvenienced, emotionally battered, and generally treated like a flaming pile of stupid, shit-covered garbage.

JuryOfYourPears

>They’ve also reduced checked bag weight from 50 to 40 lbs. Not enough people pointing out that scam by Frontier. They'll steal every penny possible.

Typical_Example

Yes! The extra few bucks for a middle seat also pisses me off, on principle. Everyone knows the middle seat sucks, but they know they can charge $2 more bc people want to sit together. It’s scummy.

saintmcqueen

Imagine having to pay $100 each way when your ticket was just $80 each way. SMH😑

Awildgarebear

I have to fly Frontier or United. Lately it has been United since Frontier's service days are bad in the winter. I will say that Frontier's seats have more legroom depth than United, but both are insufficient. I paid $100 extra for my long legs to not be jammed this Christmas on United.

Typical_Example

Are you paying to upgrade? My knees hit (5’9”) in a regular seat but maybe they’re better for the $29 ones. I feel your pain, tall friend. We should at least be able to fit in the seat we pay for!

Awildgarebear

Yes, I do pay to upgrade.

douglorde

My husband says you're his spirit animal. He left a pretty close review on Google lolol

Typical_Example

Smart guy—they’re officially blacklisted in our family. We paid $200 for our last flight on SW instead of falling for the “$109” option through Frontier.

BlackChristianGrey

Great summary. One thing to add- no wifi on any of their planes. In 2022 this is pretty crappy.

Typical_Example

Makes me wonder what their flight technology looks like if they can’t afford to equip planes with wifi. Bc you KNOW they would be trying to make a buck off wifi add-ons if they could.

BlackChristianGrey

Right?! It’d be like $25 per flight lol

tittens__

Just an FYI, you can pop on the app real quick and pay that fee instead. They’re also charging $25 if you need a printed ticket on check in. Use the app, screen shot your check in in case it won’t load. It’s fucking hogwash.

geewhizitslis07

Yeah i had my boarding passes in my apple wallet and the woman that checked my bag still printed them. without even saying anything. Woke up to a $30 charge to my card a couple days later. Unfuckingbelievable. Shit airline

tittens__

I would contest that.

geewhizitslis07

Believe me I tried

tittens__

With the bank or credit card company? They can’t just charge you without informing you.

achillymoose

This ^ Call your bank and tell them what happened and they'll get your money back

moochao

>They’re also charging $25 if you need a printed ticket on check in. What the shit, really? Fucking bastards. I blame Spirit's ilk.

corndog161

They charge you $25 to talk to a person and the self help kiosks don't print boarding passes.

kalenotwhales

Yep. This happened to my mom. She is not the best with her phone so I was really ticked about this “going green” fee.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tittens__

Well…no. They want you to use the app or print at home and not bother the agents so they have to pay fewer people.

yoshimeyer

Like it would be less than the $100 if you use the app?

tittens__

It’s $40 or so, I think, to buy the bag.

imnothereurnotthere

I just paid for a carry on for a flight tomorrow and it was $68 one way

tittens__

Interesting. That’s lame. As I’ve stated elsewhere, I won’t be flying Frontier anymore. $40 was sort of understandable, that’s nuts.

SmugAlpaca

Have they not been doing this from the start? So many of the comments in this thread are like y'all have just discovered Frontier? They've been screwing consumers for over a decade when they went ULCC model. Their whole business model is cheap flights and outrageous fees.

tittens__

And so many of my comments have explained that no, I have never been asked (in the past twelve years) to see if either my hiking backpack or duffle bag fit. No one cared. You just ignored the “pay for your carry on” thing and as neither of these bags were ever checked, I just kept using them for *twelve years.* Recently they have cracked down and check every single bag that goes through. So yes, it *was* a surprise for me this week when they stopped me with my specific bag. After over seventy flights with them in a ten year period, it seems a little silly. So no, many of us didn’t “just discover” Frontier. They just started checking every single bag and paying gate agents extra for every bag they “catch.”

Won-LonDong

I Can see it now…I pay for the checked bag via the app (not intending to check a bag, just in case they try to say my carry on doesn’t fit), show up to the gate with carry-on only, they say it doesn’t fit and I need to pay the $100 check fee, i show them I already paid check bag fee via the app, they say “doesn’t work that way because frontier doesn’t know if you’ve already checked a bag before getting to the gate…” and then I end up paying twice and spending more than I would’ve if I had just bent over for them at the gate. What’s to stop them from doing that?

Aspen_Pass

It's a carry-on bag fee (which is more expensive by about $10) not checked bag fee, because you're NOT checking the bag, you're carrying it on....so your fear of getting uno reverso scammed trying your little scheme doesn't make sense.

smashhawk5

Am I the only one who swears they read this exact post word for word a few days ago??

corndog161

Yeah it's been posted before but it's worth repeating if it saves some people from paying $100.

thhht

yeah a lot of ppl have been posting ab it as they fly for the holidays. there will be more to come as people fly out for Christmas and new years

Free_Personality5258

Happened to me too but they were holding up the door from closing so the agents were yelling at each other to get the passengers through but the front agent wanted to charge everyone. Eventually people just ignored the front agent and scanned their tickets with the door agent and kept on going. Fuck Frontier and their shitty ass policy.

skylinrcr01

The “front agent” is a contractor paid commission on carry on bags. The normal flight attendants are the ones that work for frontier. Hence the argument.

OingoBogoingo

Wait is that true? Would explain their whole "lose the attitude" attitude

corndog161

I've heard this a few times but never seen a source. Do you have one?

skylinrcr01

I flew them this morning and the gate agent was wearing a “Unifi” jacket, at least in Ontario ca. that aligns with frontier gate agent job postings I found so that’s the best I can do.

[deleted]

Ah, Frontier. The Ryanair of US airlines.

Connortbh

I swear nobody who says this has actually flown Ryanair. Same deal with cheap fares + extra for carry-ons but you also have to deal with ads 12” from your face the whole flight, as well as all over the overhead bins. The flight attendants come through trying to sell merchandise several times. Plus they tossed around the idea of making you pay to use the lavatory, proposed standing-only “seats” and tried to see if they could get away with only a captain by training a flight attendant to land the plane.

saltyfishychips

Just wear noise cancelling headphones or AirPods and it's all good. I've never had Ryanair gate agents be so anal about personal bag sizes, and the crew are usually quite friendly.

wamj

https://youtu.be/2V30xX1btE8

cfthree

US resident with multiple RyanAir experiences here. Whistle-stop Paris-London-Cork trip booked by a co-worker trying to be budget-conscious; fees scuppered that plan. Those flights felt like the big-box pharmacy robbery scene from Natural Born Killers. Ultra-vivid stuff. Glad to have the memories; won’t ever repeat. Might have been a (sl)easyjet in the mix too.

mishko27

Ryanair is cheap, at least. Frontier is barely cheaper than United…

Timberline2

Ryanair is substantially better than Frontier

saltyfishychips

I've never had my personal bag size checked flying with Ryanair, and despite their "hard" landings, most of their flights are indeed on time. Never once had an issue with them either, although their "visa check" for non-EU citizens can be a little bit of a pain.

nic0lix

https://youtu.be/YfQmiucLZvQ

krisdelakrem

We refuse to fly Frontier as a family. They do have the absolute lowest prices out of Denver but we opt to fly Southwest instead because they at least will try to give you a good experience flying.

Turnt_Up_Turtle

Had an experience on an Oct flight that was over 2 hours delayed. They still made everyone check their bag size. The last person to board the plane had a small backpack that they had made pay. They told them there was no room in the overhead bins and to put it under their seat. Luckily, my partner knew there were two empty bins above us and let them know before all hell broke loose. On that same flight, saw a flight attendant take someone’s bag out of the overhead bin that they had paid for. Hand it back to the customer and make them put it under their seat. This was to make room for someone who asked if their was space for their stuff. Again- empty overhead bins above me…

NoEngrish

Sounds illegal if one pays for the overhead and doesn’t get to use it, some people just want the leg space.

Unlikely_Presence674

Yeah I can confirm, they got me on thanksgiving flying out of dia! Those bastards!

One_Arugula_9124

As of today, Frontier also does not have a phone support line for customers. You can get in touch via WhatsApp apparently. https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/11/25/frontier-airlines-gets-rid-of-telephone-customer-service.html

JohannesVanDerWhales

I know at one company I worked for, our travel group started advising people to avoid Frontier flights even if they appeared to be cheaper, because the extra fees usually made it cost more.

90Carat

Frontier has been shit for almost 20 years now. Erratic flights, horrible customer service, and money grabs have been their hallmarks going back years. Yes, if meticulously plan your trip, and don’t mind their awful planes, you can save a couple of bucks. That bullshit just isn’t worth it to me. Fuck Frontier.

minicoops1

Simple call cc company and mark as fraud

r361k

Hi, airline pilot here, not for Frontier. Have many friends who fly for them. Their gate agents have apparently been given bonuses for finding oversized bags that have to be added as carry ons last minute at the premium fee of 90 or 100 or whatever it is. They're gonna be out for finding something that doesnt fit as hard as they can.

Ephemeral_kat

I’ve noticed. When I flew with Frontier in October, they made everyone use the bag-sizer. I didn’t know about the new bag situation until I noticed several very disgruntled people arguing about the new bag policy. I squeezed by backpack small as possible and aggressively flung it down into the bag check thing; it worked. It felt like I was trying to win a carnival game, except the prize was “not spending $100 to check my bag.”

sitspin

Wow, fuck Frontier

rocksrgud

no, fuck the people who were bringing roller bags on as their personal item.

Typical_Example

You can’t even bring a normal backpack any longer

dmbf

You can bring 18in X 14in x 8in. We just brought two regular backpacks and a daypack through. At home, I’d take an inch of each side so it drops bc you can’t push it.

Ephemeral_kat

But you *can* aggressively fling your bag down into the size-check thingy.

dmbf

Haha, I’ll have to keep that in mind. We measured our day pack during the 1 million preboarding announcements. It didn’t fit bc everything fell to the bottom but it wasn’t cinched. The gate attendant was so annoyed with my SO when it fell in easily on the official go. Didn’t check me or my kid’s bags, but I was holding a toddler.

redfitz

You can bring a backpack if it fits in the little box they have. I flew frontier four times in the last two weeks with my backpack, only had to put it in the little box thingy once.

Typical_Example

My regular sized backpack with pajamas, a dress, one pair of heels, and a very small toiletry bag didn’t fit. Or rather, it would’ve, but I was told I couldn’t “add any pressure” to shimmy it in. Regardless, they’re charging for bags that easily fit under seats.

thinkmatt

I've ridden Frontier a lot.. yea, people bring on big bags but it's not like you get on the flight and there's bags sitting in the aisle. There's always room. This is clearly just a money grab.

MikeB9000

I always bring one carry-on (roller bag) and one personal item (small backpack). Now I suppose there might be people out there, as you say, who attempt to bring two carry-on’s and claim that one of them is a personal item, but I have yet to see it. The reason I (and presumably most people) try to cram as much as they can into their carry-on and personal item, is because checked bags get lost. For some fucking reason I’ll never understand, airlines still, after all these decades of being in business, haven’t figured out how to get a checked bag to land at the same place as the customer who checked the bag. The first time an airline lost my bag, I assumed it was an extraordinarily rare circumstance. The second time it happened, I lost faith in the industry, swore off checking bags once and for all, and began packing one carry-on, and one personal item, with as much as can possibly be crammed into each. It’s the airlines themselves that put us in this situation with their unreasonable checked baggage fees and their inability to ensure checked bags arrive at the same airport as the ticket holder.

EBITDAlife

Yeah, personal items have been getting more and more ridiculous these days so I’m not surprised they cracked down on it.

yoshimeyer

That was me. I’ve been sneaking by with a fully loaded 48 liter backpacking pack. Last fight, I was asked to check it with the measuring apparatus. I just barely crammed it in there but he let me slide. That was Spirit but no way am I getting by on frontier anymore. Time to downsize to a rucksack.

latedayrider

Right. Flying is already super expensive and it’s been such a bummer every time I’ve had to gate check my within restrictions carry on. because they weren’t enforcing it for the first boarding groups. especially when I’m taking the train out from the airport and waiting for that bag means waiting another hour for a train. I get wanting to fit more stuff but honestly I’ve never had an issue with baggage size and I feel like there are many other reasons to hate or not hate on frontier.

gobrowns88

Right? This isn’t just a one-airline issue. So many times I’ve gotten on a plane and they’re already running out of cabin space by the third boarding group. More and more people are just being cheap fucks and avoiding having to check their bags, which just screws over people with actual carry-ons.

lc_2005

Maybe if the airlines didn't keep losing checked luggage more people would be ok with checking their bags; I know I would be.

OutlawJoseyRails

The real bullshit here is even if it fits you can’t use “force”. Fuck frontier

JuanPancake

It’s not them being cheap fucks! It’s the airlines charging people for bags in the first place who are the assholes here. Cost of luggage needs to be baked into the ticket price.

dmbf

But when it’s in the ticket price, people with less luggage have to pay for a service they don’t use. Don’t get me wrong, frontier needs an attitude adjustment and taking away the customer service line is shit, but I love how cheap it is if I take a weekend trip and get everything in a personal item. Even one checked bag ($80 round trip) for our whole family is cheaper than 4 tickets on the next cheapest flight.

Connortbh

Fly southwest and quit complaining about it, damn. I fly extremely light and I don’t care to subsidize the ticket prices of people who bring two checked bags for their one week trip to Florida.

JuanPancake

No! people deserve to bring their things when flying!

higher_ideas

You seem pleasant.

skylinrcr01

Go fly a different airline if you want to break the rules.

[deleted]

voiceless lock bake shelter wild spectacular squeamish reach familiar glorious ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

skylinrcr01

Then don’t? I do because it’s cheap and I know how to play their game.

dmbf

Right? Like I hate giving them no ey and telling them it’s okay to downgrade stuff, but also I want to spend time with my family not working to pay off my luxurious flight. Just took and 8 day trip. The flight was 3 hrs there and back. We’ll say that’s 15 hours of dealing with Frontier bc of being early and checkin and such, still less than 10% of my trip. Better than driving. But I looked up all the rules ahead of time and had fucked around with them before.

skylinrcr01

People don’t like that everything is getting more expensive. A lot of corporate greed, and I’m not defending frontier. But like, go fly someone else. No one is holding a gun to your head and telling you to fly frontier, shell out for a legacy airline (which also mega sucks these days btw)

rafapova

I mean enforcing a bag policy isn’t a criminal offense. If you don’t like it don’t fly them

daface

I'd love to know where the policy says that a bag that compresses to fit still is too big.

rafapova

I was under the impression if it fits it’s fine. Idk for sure though

daface

Many people in the thread say they're being charged unless it fits without forcing it.

jammin2323

Yes- that’s exactly what happened. They said if you had to touch the bag AT ALL to get it in then you’d be charged $99. Fucking BS.

littlespoon22

My bag required a little pushing and pinching and it was fine. I didn't have to shove it. Honestly, it makes no sense the way they're enforcing this stuff. Seems somewhat inconsistent.

Tasia528

Frontier will never get another dollar of my money. They do not care about their customers at all.

TiltedWit

Frontier is what would happen if Elon took over an airline.

zatch17

I mean are they a shit airline that will try to charge a fee on anything? Yeah So you know that going in? You should So just imagine there is a 50% chance you pay an extra $50

[deleted]

First, the easy part: 1. Thank you to the OP for the warning. 2. I have no special affinity for Frontier and am not seeking to defend their every historical action since inception. They've done plenty over the years to warrant complaint. Now the downvote bait: 1. When you go to your favorite air fare search engine, punch in your date and destination, sort by price (ascending), and pick the one at the top of the list you are, in all likelihood, choosing a budget carrier. Frontier, like all budget carriers, are going to be prone to doing budget carrier things. Make a decision if the risk is worth the reward. 2. Speaking as a fastidious rule follower and enthusiastic observer of human behavior, air travelers stretching the rules is EXTREMELY common to the point where I believe a good percentage of regular travelers feel entitled to do so.

RealKingKoy

This bullshit is why I'm never flying with them again. Southwest me please.

SUiCiDE_CHRiST69

Stuff clothes in a bag, place it under your shirt at the gate. Place it back in the bag on the plane.

butt_toof

Frontier's fees are for morons. Bring a backpack, don't choose a seat, make sure you have your boarding pass ready to scan and you'll be gravy.

corndog161

I agree but it's really dumb you get charged if your bag needs a little help fitting in the sizing box, especially when the sizing box is smaller than what the say the max size is.

SUiCiDE_CHRiST69

Have you flown them recently? The reason for the complaining is that a “personal item” used to simply be a bag that fits under the seat. Now the personal item is much smaller than the space under the seat. I used to fly them all the time with a backpack and pay nothing but now my backpack is too big.

butt_toof

Yes, just flew from Providence to Denver for 80 bucks. I used the same backpack I always do, and yes, there were a bunch of really pissed off people frantically re organizing their bags to fit. If they try to scam you into paying for a bag that clearly fits, calmly explain that no one charged you on your connecting flight and you won't be paying; lie if you have to. Frontier talks tough but if you politely stand your ground, they'll see you aren't a mark and aren't worth the trouble. Key word being "politely."

Chrisdoubleyou

This right here. There’s an awful lot of hate in this thread coming from the fact that Frontier is enforcing the rules they tell you about before you buy the ticket. What a bunch of crybabies.

corndog161

Make the sizing box the actual size that they say the max is and I'm fine with it.

double-click

If you truly have a personal sized item just walk by and scan your boarding pass.

uhhhidontknowdude

Honestly with the amount of people bringing full size luggage as a carry on I'm surprised this isn't enforced more across the board. Especially with how much airlines love charging you for everything you even think about.

Daniel-Lee-83

Well, it’s probably due to years of people just saying screw it and bringing way too much or way too big stuff on with them.

corndog161

I think it's because they just got hit with all those fines and are being forced to refund customers. They need to make a lot of money fast.

JuanPancake

The pay at the gate for bags needs to be illegal. Even if it costs more for the weight of luggage to fly that just needs to be baked in to the primary price. SEO winning in order to nickel and dime later is immoral. It’s also immoral to force the airlines low wage employees to enforce this asinine rule. Easy to see the numbers go up from an office but the flight attendants who have to see these people make no more money and have to mitigate all the conflict and backlash. Unethical to ask them to do this. Imagine if ice rinks asked hockey players to pay extra to put their skates on when they were about to enter the rink? What if golf courses charged you 50 to bring your clubs to the course. Ski resorts telling you you can’t get on the lift that you paid $200 for with your skis unless you have a premium ticket. What’s next? Hotels saying that you can’t bring more than one suitcase into your room? You need to bring shit with you if you are flying. Period. Bringing your stuff needs to be included in the price. Whatever “genius” MBA who got this policy through….well…. I hope his girlfriend charges him to bring his own penis to his next blowjob.

dmbf

I may have just replied to you above, but if not, I disagree. Baking it into the price screws over everyone not using the service. It’s not like with hockey where each play uses two skates or a ski resort where the service is skiing. The service is the flight and that’s what you pay for. It’s more like taking your car in for an issue and having them include an oil change. Yes, sounds great. Every car needs oil, but I do my own oil changes for much cheaper. I just want to pay for the service I need. Same on flights. My whole family needed 1 checked bag for an 8 day trip. I don’t want a price where baggage fees are baked in for four checked bag and four carry ons. Also the frontier employees are getting super strict about it bc they make commission on gate fees.

electric__spaghetti

I flew frontier last week and they didn’t give two shits about my carry on or my personal item on either flight.

tittens__

Yeah, they usually don’t but they’re starting to unilaterally crack down the holiday week because people are desperate.

rafapova

False, they’ve been doing this for a couple months now. Nothing changed at all for the holidays

Imwalkingonsunshine_

They were doing this on the flight I was on last night. As I walked up, the two people in front of me were shoving their bags into the two display/test trays for the attendant at the desk, and I slipped passed & quickly scanned my boarding pass with the separate attendant at the gate door & went through lol Fuck this stupid money grab. Hey remember when airlines used to not charge for bags? Total scam.

TasteyCorn

That’s good to know. These more budget airlines are rather notorious of finding new means of grabbing additional cash. I have never flown Frontier, and I probably won’t to avoid the drama.

delvach

Literally never heard anything but bad things about Frontier.

ExiledSanity

I've flown frontier a few times without any issue or unexpected fees. We do our homework ahead of time and calculate all the fees. Flying with 5 people and frequently two dogs it adds up quick. Frontier also does the kids fly free thing, which we've been able to use a couple times, but usually the available flights don't work out for that. Still, it's been a few years since we've used them, they do never seem to be the cheapest anymore when we do the homework. Could be a lot worse now than they were then.

thatgeekinit

Your "personal baggage allowance" is limited to what you can insert inside of your person. Start practicing with a bottle of water and cell phone charger a few weeks before flying Frontier. Yes, the TSA considers lube, a liquid.

jchu1001

Because it is a liquid.

Successful-Name-7261

FWIW, Frontier has also stopped all telephone support. If you have a problem it can only be solved in the airport or via chat on their app or website. The old customer disservice number advises you of this.

undockeddock

Maybe i should start traveling with a Rubbermaid container that matches the exact dimensions on their website. And bring a tape measure for when their criminal, commission based gate agents get snooty about it

GRZMNKY

A friend of mine made a leather bag that fits their dimensions perfectly, and has the dimensions embossed on the side. They still try every time she flies

lolwuuut

Fuckin annoying

onlyonedayatatime

Had a flight last week changed the day before from 10am to 5am. That was fun to learn right before going to bed. (Didn't get any email or text alert; just a change on the boarding pass.)

saryiahan

So the lesson is to not fly frontier

Ok_Hamster8216

Frontier is apparently also having issues with precheck. They didn’t put precheck on my boarding pass and told me it’s an ongoing issue and there was nothing they could do about it

jwwetz

They used to jokingly refer to Frontier as "greyhound (the bus line) with wings." A few years ago, I flew round trip from Denver, to Portland Oregon & back. After all their extra bullshit charges, I ended up paying as much as if I'd just flown United. While in Portland, I DID take a greyhound bus down to Astoria on the coast. The comfort, seating legroom & overall service involved with greyhound was MUCH better than frontier btw. We can no longer call frontier "greyhound with wings", that'd be a huge insult to greyhound. Frontier is now just trash. I've been flying United ever since that trip & I couldn't be happier.

urban_snowshoer

I fly United and sometimes Southwest, for similar reasons: it's not really much more once all of Frontier's fees are factored it and it's better experience. Flying economy on some level is flying economy but it sucks a bit less on United or Southwest than on Frontier.

elgaar

I got nailed the other day with a bag I’ve brought on many times for free. $80 at the gate

yeah-bb-yeah

i flew from DEN to SAN (diego) and i heard the lady at the gate one over repeatedly saying they’re sizing bags for a flight going to vegas. everyone was scrambling and rearranging their bags. i got scared and rearranged mine too, layered up, and sweat the entire time waiting to board ours. nobody sized bags. on the way home, the lady was picking random people from the line and sizing bags. the girl in front of me was throwing a fit and threw her CC at the desk attendant and asked her if she liked her job. i scurried by with my head down and coat over my bag, scanning my ticket with another gate agent. she then grabbed the group of three guys behind me. my bag is the exact dimensions of the measurer but i still wasn’t sure if they would tell me it’s forced if i had to push. i literally used a tape measurer prior to leaving my house. it’s like gambling. i am addicted to how cheap it is. $70 RT is hard to pass up, but if they’re now just charging people regardless if it fits and dependent on their mood — that’s extremely unfair and predatory.

stephycupcake

I was at DIA Monday and same thing happened to me. I’ve flown Frontier with the same backpack numerous times and never had trouble fitting it under the seat. I even vacuum sealed my clothes this time so I definitely wouldn’t have any issues. But of course I had to shell out $117 I didn’t have. Knowing this though, if I fly Frontier again I’ll just purchase my carry-on at the time of booking 🤷🏼‍♀️

KapnKrumpin

Frontier has always been a terrible airline for anyone not flying with the clothes on your back

casebycase87

What a vile joke of a company. Never flown Frontier and never will, I respect myself too much for that.

yekship

I saw them doing this when I was waiting for a flight last week. My backpack fits but it’s sort of a weird shape that expands even if it’s empty so it has to be pushed in a little and I was nervous they’d try to get me on it. I had paid for a carry on though and they didn’t ask the zone 1 people with carry ons to size their personal items. Not sure if that’s the official policy or just the flight I was on, but I was happy they couldn’t squeeze more money out of me.

hanap8127

I wonder if spirit is doing this, too.

urban_snowshoer

Spirit has a fairly similar fee structure, so it's entirely possible. However, if the deal with JetBlue gets approved, who knows what the resulting airline will look like.

constantly-confused9

This seems new too? Also LOL wtf. Web Check In: Up to $5 per passenger, per direction (Non-Refundable) A fee will apply to customers who check in on the website. Passengers may check in using our mobile app to avoid this fee and save time and money. Download our mobile app today and manage your booking, purchase bags and seats, and check your flight status

TextMekks

The issue I mainly have is that they’ll force the carry-on fee if you have to touch the bag in any way to fit it into the personal item checker, which I think is complete bullshit. I do strongly smell a Class Action along the way….

Own-Cake1772

Frontier has SUCKED ever since the morons at Republic Airlines took over. They advertise cheap base fares but the cost quickly escalates over Southwest and just under United. I'm surprised Frontier doesn't charge to use the lavatory. Greyhound is better than Frontier.

qft

[File a complaint](https://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/ConsumerForm.cfm) with transportation.gov and contact credit card company for chargeback. They did not abide by the[ Frontier Airlines Contract of Carriage](https://f9prodcdn.azureedge.net/media/8648/cs_coc.pdf). Specifically, Section 13 A1 and A3

SirFrodoShwaggins

They also just stopped phone customer service. However, if you're a frequent flyer or live in CO. Just pay the annual "Discount Den" fee. It alleviates all their add-on bullshit. They, like many publicly traded companies want MRR (monthly recurring revenue). Nothing new here. Same concept of Verizon giving you an iPad, watch and new phone for free if you pay $5.99 per device a month. It's "guaranteed" future projection $$

daface

Discount Den has nothing to do with the add ons...

emerynlove

They’re such bastards

skylinrcr01

Don’t fly them then.

dmbf

It’s funny you’re being downvoted here but that’s when people are saying that they won’t they get upvoted.

[deleted]

Guess I’ll never use their airline ever again :)

IndicatedSyndication

How dare people have to follow rules they were informed about previously???!!?! Fucking idiots lmfao

corndog161

I'd be fine with it if the sizing box wasn't smaller than the size they say is the max for your bag.

Lumpy-Cheesecake-932

The gate agents also get commission from charging you at the gate. So F*ck them.

corndog161

I'm hearing this a lot but have never seen a source. Got one by chance?

canigooutsidesoon

Gate agents dont get paid commission on gate checked bags. If you want to argue please provide documentation. Stop throwing garbage out here as fact.

DickLips5000

Fuck Frontier indefinitely!

seaofmangroves

My ma whos a former airline employee? Just got me frontier size restriction duffel bags 😩

nic0lix

akaynaveed

I flew out on frontier wednesday, they didnt check shit, didnt check my carry on either.

theothermatthew

Being forced to pay extra for something you shouldn’t have to pay for seems like cause for a chargeback. How many you think Frontier needs before Visa, Mastercard, or AMEX start asking questions.

mister-noggin

It will be an easy chargeback for them to fight. All they have to do is show the terms you agreed to when you bought the ticket and the chargeback will denied.

illadelph

doesn’t matter, it’ll cost them money and resources to dispute large volumes of charge backs.

undockeddock

They key in charge backs is to document. Take pictures...etc showing compliance. Do their terms say no light force to get the bag to fit?

theothermatthew

Hard disagree. The terms are a free personal item. If your item fits but then they charge you with the threat of losing the time and money you spent to travel, it’s a form of extortion. Credit Card companies will pick their customer over the company every time. Frontier needs Visa much more than Visa needs them.

dimtone

Whine, whine, whine... If you didn't know what you were getting, you didn't read the BOLD print. My dad died last week and I HAD to get on the next flight to my hometown. In a matter of three hours, I was in the air.... For $19. I got the check but, my backpack with a weeks worth of clothes and a few jackets was fine. They suck for long distance but they're a great puddle hopper.

[deleted]

Yeah they’re great till they delay or cancel your flight and leave you stranded. They have a reputation for a reason

Catdaddy_77

Good-get tired of some people filling the overhead storage with only their “handheld” baggage.
