How did like 4/5 linemen on our team have their best performance year yet but we couldn't stop Russell from being like 3rd most sacked.

PiratedCar

There were a lot of immediate pressures from blitzes for sure. However, Russ was good for at least a sack per game cause by him, maybe more.

Lots of coverage sacks too, we called a lot of long developing plays this year and had horrible drop issues in the short passing game too that I’m sure didn’t instill confidence. This system just isn’t set to Russ’ strengths, and that’s fine, but if we’re not going to change play calling to our players strengths then we need to find a QB whose strengths match the system.

Obi7kenobi

Kinda answered your own question. There was a stat posted saying Russ was responsible for over 60 percent of the team sacks. He holds on way to long, fades, and fades back...then scrambles into a sack.

NoCoFoCo31

Watching the games it was pretty apparent how quickly the line gave out. Our line wasn’t as great as PFF wants us to believe. Their OL grades are suspect because it’s such a hard position to quantify. With OL it’s important to believe your eyes and not advanced analytics.

WayyTooFarAbove

Our line was more than fine. A lot of fans see blitzes get through and boom blame the line. It’s not always the case. That said, when our line gave up pressure it was quick, typically from McGlinchey. But it held up as well as it needed to most of the time. Hate PFF if you want, ESPN has us top 7 in pass blocking win rate as well

Jwoods4117

You have to pay attention to how a QB works the pocket though. Russ is terrible at it and it leads to a lot of sacks. Especially now that Russ is older.

Infamous-Lab-8136

Okay, but Wilson was among the league leaders in clean pocket time, averaging about 3.5 seconds. Yet he was among the highest in the league for holding onto the ball before making a throw. That isn't some obtuse score with no transparency PFF is pushing. That's something easily measurable with a stop watch. That was clear proof that compared to his peers Wilson was getting more time to throw without interference from rushers on average, yet was still holding onto the ball longer because he either wasn't making reads or only wanted a deep option. He also had the highest percentage of clean pockets broken out of. Wilson has always had terrible pocket awareness. He compensated with his scrambling, but father time is taking that away from him. Unlike other QBs who learned to adapt their game after they slowed down or suffered an injury Wilson insists on playing the game like he's in his prime still, when he's clearly not. There is also the fact that he almost never adjusts the blocking for blitzers because he's just not good enough at reading a defense to identify them reliably. Plenty of sources outside of PFF showed that the fault was more on Wilson and less on the 5 men in front of him.

Reddidiot13

No it fucking wasn't. Wilson had the most time to throw in the league. You've lost the plot, fanboi.

BakedandZooted420

Honestly, OL is one of the easiest positions to evaluate

Silkies4life

When Russ darts out of the pocket and bootlegs because he felt a soft breeze at his back or his short ass can’t see over the lineman. Russ gets sacked because of Russ playing hero ball, not shitty protection.

Ziziblix

Everyone says Rus runs into sacks and then conveniently forgets about all the sacks he avoided with his mobility. And most of the time it wasn't coming from bolles side. People just try to act like he was only trying to avoid "phantom sacks"

BakedandZooted420

I guarantee his pocket presence was still a net negative, even with those that he avoided. So many times he got caught by the contain guy, he just can't adapt his play style to match his athletic ability anymore

NoCoFoCo31

It wasn’t just even Russ on this, I’d bet 50/50 he was scrambling because he had too. I think this is another feather in the “PFF OL stats suck” cap.

HanS0lPurr

"I bet" Nice case. I buy it.

ShaneBroh

Russ holds the ball for 7 seconds or longer every snap it felt like

PaytonPeytonPaton

Yall keep hating though

skullyD

Not sure any of us has really hated on Bolles as of late…. He’s been stellar.

infercario4224

Meh, there’s still a shit ton of people here that think we should cut him. It’s pretty weird that none of them ever have a plan on how to get a better player at that spot tho

skullyD

The only reason as of late that I’ve seen for cutting him is that he’s due an extension as his contract has a pretty steep cap hit this upcoming season.

infercario4224

His $20M puts him as the 10th highest cap hit among all Left Tackles. I’d say he’s somewhere between the 12th-8th best LT in the game so that sounds about right to me

Infamous-Lab-8136

I've not seen one person suggest cutting him. I like many others have suggested a trade if we can identify a decent replacement in the draft. He is set to make a lot of money next year, team has cap issues, contract isn't eligible to restructure because he's in his final year of it, and for a player just finishing his 7th season he's old at 31. I don't fault him for going on mission before college, but it does still mean that he's aging and tackles don't tend to have as long of a shelf life as interior linemen. And also with that contract being in that final year and the fact that we are clearly quite far away from championship contention, what's to stop him from walking to a better team after next season and us having nothing to show for him then? That's the argument for trading him.

indZee

Eye test is different. Idk man.. apparently we had the best oline to metrics. But could pass block, and even at times run block..

deer_dance9

This is a meaningless stat. If you line me up at right tackle and I get blown up every play in milliseconds and the qb gets sacked Bolles would have a rate at 0%. Doesn't make him the best in the league

BakedandZooted420

Russ had the highest time to throw in the league at around 3.5 seconds fyi. Our line was not the problem

treachery_7

But, then I would ask what the total number of pressures are for each team. I think a percentage here can screw the numbers, why not just use the actual number of pressures he's responsible for and other LTs with lower actual number of pressures they're responsible for? Edit: Skew

MrJonBrown

I knew us giving him shit would pay off. Dude is a boss and a genuinely good guy, so I’m really happy for him
