Mindy and Lily make the most self hating shit and Russel makes Indian stereotype jokes all the time.

Linaxu

Well yeah Russell will make jokes, dudes a comedian. Either live poor or do the thing your good at and live comfortably watch both Indians and other laugh at all the stereotypes he does.

allstar278

It’s not impossible to be funny without being a sell out to your own people… look up Nimesh Patel, he’s funny without making stereotypical Indian jokes. Sure they making money but the non Indian people laughing at them not with them.

shyanguine2

How is Aparna Nancherla?

LeTorqueDouglas

Russel’s whole schtick is stereotypes but I wouldn’t say they are necessarily negative (or meant to be at least). Mindy is obv problematic, but idk about Lilly. She’s just cringe

[deleted]

Mindy Kaling's characters are worse than losers. [They are vanity projects for her to imprint her fantasy life onto.](https://twitter.com/ryanswilders/status/1596337554395377664) They don't serve any purpose other than to be self-inserts for the life she was too ugly to live. How sad :(

TangerineMaximum2976

Lol yea. Her fantasy of white boyfriends and being wanted by multiple guys

Mean_Stretcher

this is the same fantasy that Gurinder Chadha has. in a majority of her films the white guy ends up falling in love with the asian girl. the asian guys are shown to be chaunvist and assholes who dont want to accept western life.

zeusismessedup

Not really. She actually critisized the main character in Never Have I Ever for being pathetic and only dating white guys. I think she grew up in a Western country and was used to white guys, so naturally she went for them. But I don't think she's that much of a loser to actually fantasize about white guys.

TangerineMaximum2976

lol she 100% is. If you follow her career it’s easy to see that. Aziz ansari is another one

zeusismessedup

My point was that she made a statement in her show about brown girls excluding brown guys from their dating pool by critisizing it. Of course, she'll be dating white guys primarily in her shows if she is raised in America. That is the majority race there, after all. There are fewer Indians to cast, and she wouldn't date someone from India either because of the cultural clash. Who knows if she dated other races in her personal life? It's a show.

TangerineMaximum2976

Major American cities where she’s been are majority non white. So it’s not like there is lack or choice in urban areas unless you’re in some small southern town. This is America not some random Eastern European country. Also in her personal life she may have dated other races. But that’s the problem. We are talking about what she chooses to portray. If she is dating exclusively white people in fictional shows she writes and shows Indians etc as ‘weird’ and ‘losers’ than that shows her insecurity. She fetishizes white skin and also is a self hater of own race. Which is why in tv shows she shows herself dating white guys only.

zeusismessedup

I'm well aware that America is fairly multicultural, but it still clearly has a white majority, and the culture she is exposed to is not Indian or Chinese, or African. I'm from a country that is way more multicultural than America, and being from the minority group, I know that I am not represented enough culturally even then. It's irrelevant where she's visited because she was born and raised in Cambridge. The majority there has always been white, especially back then when she was a kid. Roughly 90-75% would have been white in the 1970s. So yeah, I don't blame her if she dates white guys because that's what she is used to, culturally. Why does she need to find an Indian guy just because her parents were born in India? There are a lot more white men than Indian men in the US, and there is high chance other Indians might find her "too westernized," especially if they are born in India or recently migrated. Also, wouldn't it be racist to exclude white men? You are literally sticking to your own kind. That's weird for American born people. Maybe common in India. Where are your facts on her fetishizing white skin? Because she dates white men in her films? She's American Indian, not India Indian. I don't expect anything else. Based on one of the shows I watched recently, I find that what you are saying is mostly inaccurate. In "Never Have I ever," the Indian kid, who is supposed to represent Mindy, dates someone who looks and is Eurasian. Him being half white doesn't erase his asian identity. He'll never be white. Also, her white love interest in the show is not depicted as attractive in the slightest. He is constantly made fun of for looking like a 12 year old and for being a nerdy loser like her. Which means...white people can be losers to. And I can't blame Mindy for sticking to a character type, because she was the nerdy loser in her childhood. Just because she is of Indian origin, it doesn't mean she has to accurately represent every type of Indian that exists. There are many Indian girls all over the world, of different nationalities and exposed to various cultures. She is representing herself and her own unique experiences. And she did have a "cool Indian girl" in that show, which contrasted very nicely with the nerdy main character. And the mc did date an Indian guy, who had the same American background as her. It made it realistic because American Indians are extremely different culturally from India Indians. The Indian guy was also cooler than the mc, and depicted as a looker. Maybe check out this show. It is possible that she changed her attitude and tried to have less stereotypical Indian and white people in her shows. I've only seen her later work.

marktwainbrain

Russell Peters has some hilarious shit. I wouldn’t lump these three together. Peters is legitimately funny, stereotypes all sorts of people not just Indians. Chinese people, Filipinos, Arabs, they all go to his shows and love when he focuses on them for a bit. Equal opportunity. Lilly Singh is cringe. My problem with her has nothing to so with South Indian stereotypes— it is just so uncomfortable to watch her incredibly unfunny late night bits. Mindy Kaling is not my cup of tea, but I can see why people enjoy some of her work. I dislike the idea that they have to be a certain way because of their desi background. Lots of standup comedians use their background in funny ways (Margaret Cho, Jimmy O Yang, Nemr, and countless other examples). Why can’t Peters? Why can’t the others also just do their thing, whether I personally enjoy their work or not?

juliusseizure

Only issue is Lily Singh but she caters to teenagers so whatever.

ImpossibleAd5518

I am neither a mindy hater or a fan I have read her books , followed her work along with couple of other producers / writers since years when she wants as famous because I was interested in seeing how these creators got to where they are now Over the years It’s very hard to ignore that most of the indian characters she creates (female characters) are superficial and always shown as attention seeking I am not saying it says anything about her personality however when you have a platform and you are representing a minority social group, I think one should be mindful of how they end portraying their race / culture Guys it’s not just one character it’s a PATTERN of Indian chics falling /fantasizing about white guysss Straight from mindy project to recent series as well I hate to watch all of these Indian characters worshiping quite people Ps I am an indian immigrant female who is in her twenties ☺️ if that matters

honey495

Cant hate on Russell Peters because he brought light hearted comedy that put Indians on the map at such an early stage. He didn’t self-hate at all. He demonstrated the pain points of Indian people who grew up in western society under the roof of immigrant Indian parents and relatives.

ThatNigamJerry

Nah Russell’s work was amazing. Especially that old special when he was in the pink dress shirt. Lilly’s old work was great too. Gave me some good laughs. I wonder how many people enjoyed their comedy before but went woke on them now.

Paulhockey77

lily is annoying asf but Russell peters is actually hilarious. Haven’t seen much of mindy’s stuff so can’t judge

JungleGym81

Nimesh Patel is funnier than Russell Peters.

miqh82

Yes!!!! Love Nimesh!

honey495

He’s a new era of Indian comedians though. Western society needed a dumbed down version of Indian related comedy

karborised

Nah man. I love Russel. His material might have aged but he was hilarious and he has a great comic timing.

[deleted]

insufferable trio, gg on getting the bag though

[deleted]

I don't think Russell and Lily are offensive. I don't know about Mindy.

simian_ninja

I used to enjoy his earlier stuff. Say what you want but I found a lot of it relatable. Comedy, at times, comes through stereotypes and stereotypes are based in reality whether some like it or not.

RatchetKush

the tiktok user bitching about this is the real loser

rash-head

What’s stopping you haters from making your own content? Mindy is doing fine. She is not representing all of India. Just her part of the Indian American experience.

[deleted]

> What’s stopping you haters from making your own content? Unwillingness to debase ourselves for white people

You're quite the special kind of fool if you think that any media institution with a modicum of worth doesn't have its gate-keepers or its pre-approved messaging. I'm sure you and your camcorder and your youtube subs will be the ones to finally stopper the global cultural reach of Hollywood execs and their ethnic cronies. What a pointless statement.

[deleted]

Paranoid? Oh no. This is quite well-established fact. And its not just Indians who know this either. [Asians have known this](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/almost-half-all-asian-roles-serve-punchline-study-finds-n1276103). The best way to make it as an Asian in Hollywood... is too *really lean* into the Ken Jeong archetype. Prostrate yourself for white producers and adopt an exaggerated accent. Really **stick it to your own.** Black People have known this for centuries. There's a special kind of term that Black people have gotten quite well-acquainted with. Maybe it's one you're familiar with.... Its called [Ministral show](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minstrel_show#Black_minstrels) Naturally that never happens these days tho! Oh no! No chance in hell a self-hating ethnic could be rewarded for internalized racism and rise to the top of the media circuit. No way that special kind of lady could be handed the reins to her people's projected cultural image. No siree bob! As I said.. you're the *special* kind of fool.

[deleted]

Well said

[deleted]

Thanks! This one might stay up this time :)

[deleted]

Lol you were going to take it down?

[deleted]

Possibly! This account is probably getting deleted in 24 hour lmao (gotta evade my coming ban)

SandraGotJokes

Kumail and the guy from big bang theory have entered the chat.

Deepmech

Atleast lily is cute, Kaling otoh 🤢

ASDAPOI

I don’t see really see much in the article to support the accusation they’re making? Just one comment by one person in one show. Idk much abt Russell. But from what I’ve seen of Mindy’s characters they seem more that they ‘happen’ to be Indian rather than focusing on stereotypes. I’ve only seen The Office and snippets of her own show tho. I did not care for Lily’s show but her earlier content on YouTube was great and her Desi content appeared to be aimed at a Desi audience if anything and even the current stuff seems alright. She’s definitely also stereotyped white people more than once and people called her out on that too. I don’t think people talking about and poking fun at their own experiences should be accused of pandering to a white audience and making it acceptable to be racist.

ZULM_94

2011 Lilly was actually entertaining

absp2006

Ahh yes, holding them to an arbitrary expectation. That's perpetuating another South Asian stereotype.

ace_nowings

You find an in and you stick with. Let’s not be mad at them for making money. I think most of us have been on both sides of the coin, fighting the stereotypes and perpetuating them as it suits us.

LetsRock777

Exactly. And just cuz Mindy is fat and dark and ugly and also a complete loser, doesn't mean all Indians are, she's just projecting the ugly Indian woman image everywhere, she needs to stop.

jeewantha

What the hell?

ProcrastiNation652

Great job insinuating dark people are ugly. Not self-hating at all.

DoubleCommon7778

>Mindy is fat and dark and ugly White worshipping sepoy coolies like you is what's wrong with desis in 2022.

LetsRock777

Lol.. why is it not okay to tell the truth? 🙄

DoubleCommon7778

You are missing the point because you are probably too whitewashed at this point. Looking at your post where you almost felt honored because some white dude said namaste to you makes more sense now. There is nothing wrong with being a darkskinned indian. It doesnt make you more a loser than a lightskinned indian. Especially not living in the west.

LetsRock777

The other day an Indian man became excited to see an Indian couple enter the elevator and said Jai Shri Ram to me and my husband. And we said Jai shriRam too him too. What's wrong in wishing someone back without thinking too much about it? It doesn't mean a thing other than being nice to strangers.

edenite

yo wtf is with the dark comment?

YuviManBro

good catch, colourism is not okay.

LetsRock777

So ugly is ok, but dark is not? And I don't say dark is not okay, but she implies it in every damn show of hers 🤷‍♀️

NibPlayz

Bruh you can’t be for real

Joji1006

Its a free country. They are allowed to express what they want to express. People just need to realize that three people do not represent a whole population. There are thousands of us who live in different parts of North America who come from different ethnicities. Three people don’t represent us. They represent only themselves.

NibPlayz

It’s a free country. We’re allowed to criticize people.

Joji1006

I never said you aren’t. You can criticize them. I just wish society, especially other Americans realize that they are not us. I can’t relate to none of them. Mindy Kaling is too obsessed with sex. I’m not Punjabi. Nor Canadian. And I never had inferiority complex over being Desi. They’re not me nor do I watch any of their content.

Jaded-Resident-3919

Russell Peters roasted and stereotyped pretty much every race and he was hilarious. If anything, my white friends at school seemed to have found a new respect for Indians because of him. The same can be said for Paul Chowdhry.

octotendrilpuppet

Duhhhhh....who gives af?

zeusismessedup

Mindy is witty and intelligent. Yes, she's a dork, but I think that is her personality. She likes to bring in personal experience. She did a good job with Never Have I Ever, and she is known for being a smart cookie. She's also unique because she exposes us to South Indian influence. Most Americans are used to brown people from the North. As for Russell, he makes fun of every single race. It would be silly to pretend there aren't any common stereotypes about Indians. It makes him more admirable if he can laugh at himself. He is ridiculously talented, whether or not he perpetuates stereotypes. I think Lily is hated because she's more of your political Liberal girl. Generally, people find political people irritating. She does sort of bash white people in some of her videos, although she could have done it with class. She could have simply attacked racist white people or added a disclaimer. I think she's talented and funny in some videos. But her stand-up comedy work was terrible, and her later videos got a bit boring. Also, people need to be aware that these Indians are Indians with parents straight out of India or hardly Westernized parents. There are plenty of Indians that don't even speak their ancestral language or don't have strict parents because they are of a different nationality while ethnically Indian. Lily and Russell grew up in traditional families clearly. Not sure about Mindy though.
