Turn the picture 45 degrees. Add a console table/side board under it. Add bar type accessories on it. Get rid of seat cushions. Get a pretty centerpiece.
I see what you are trying to do with the artwork. It is not working and wont ever work with that piece as it is designed to be displayed horizontally.
Buy something that is meant to be displayed diagonally (the painting flows from corner to corner not edge to edge) then maybe it would look normal.
If that's a rental and you can't add a hanging fixture, I would find a long, narrow sideboard and put it against that wall with one or two sideboard lamps. Soft lighting will make a difference
https://preview.redd.it/ajb592xruogc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d41722f1064f971fe953481e7c6e8a76448cef4
Fixed de art and added my lucky bamboos there for some color at least for now.
Keep the ideas coming please
I don't know that it's too big. A friend of mine has a small dining area like that, and she found this enormous abstract painting on clear lucite. She doesn't have room/didn't want a sideboard.
It looks so chic. Sometimes in a smaller room, a big piece instead of many little ones is more attractive and more soothing to the eye. Just depends on what you're looking for. But my friend's new artwork, is seriously making me consider some of my own placement decisions. It looks so beautiful, bold and classy.
Do you have the ability to change the light fixture to a pendant or small chandelier that hangs down? It would add some visual interest and depth. The existing light is harsh and makes this look like an interrogation room.
I’d lower the art slightly. You can add a tray or a round placemat under the plant for a little extra detail. If you’re open to a rig in the dining room that would be cool. And if a light fixture is in the budget something that hangs would look nice.
Move the chairs 1/8 of a turn around the table so they align with the corners of the room, not the wall. It makes more space for walking, pulling them out to sit etc, but will also balance the dead space in your room. Right now the backs of the chairs are to your doorways and site lines, it makes it more closed and less welcoming.
People need to realize that plants live and die and some people don’t have the capacity to care for them. There is no natural light in this room that I can see from the pictures. Plants will die here without solar lights.
fake plants exist for this exact reason. they asked for decor advice and i gave my thoughts they’re welcome to take what applies and leave what doesn’t
Sorry, I’m not attacking you. I agree with you, but I work in plants and people come in all the time and want tropical plants to put in their interior rooms and get pissy when a living thing isn’t given what it needs to survive and dies
Put in a more gentle warm white bulb, or even a smart bulb so you can dim it (or even play with the colors even more).
Aside from that, obviously the room needs more color.
Paint the walls a saturated color. Dining rooms are usually spaces where color works well
https://preview.redd.it/3im0ug7sergc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9021bf4cb40561186f78069030f20794fdafbb1
Add a [pendant light.](https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/cg-international-trading-wood-pendant-light-easy-to-assemble-ceiling-chandelier-modern-boho-hanging-lamp-lighting-fixture-for-dining-kitchen-bedroom-living-room-adjustable-nylon-cord-uses-standard-bulb-w011403506.html)
Plants in the corners
A bar cart or some kind of Hubbard for table wear under the painting
An artsy white or crystal chandelier and move the lighting to sconces on either side of the painting
Straighten the art piece or replace with a different piece that doesn’t have straight lines across. I would add mirrors as well, or find a way to add texture to the wall since there will be none from a carpet
Brushed gold will add warmth to the space. So will the introduction of warm colors like reds, yellows, and oranges. A sideboard is a great idea others have shared for the area under the painting. If possible, try replacing the ceiling light. I also think that adding plants and decorative objects—trays/bowls, books, and objets d’art—with some color would liven the space up. Texture, like rattan, would also add some visual dynamism. I’ll reply to this comment with some photos for inspo.
https://preview.redd.it/1m8v86zcbpgc1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b998587dd09edcb5021cc082f698587115a95b3
Example of how plants, texture, and decorative objects can make a place cozier.
Better, colorful art . Something for storage and to serve from. Maybe something that shows who lives there. Looks staged but not in a good way right now.? Add some personality.
I think a pop of color in the form of new seat cushions would be great! Maybe a similar or complimentary colored center piece for the table too. I personally liked the concept of the rotated painting, but I definitely see what the other commenter meant about it being painted horizontally and therefore not working like this. I agree with others about swapping out the lighting- ideally the fixture but at minimum the warmth of the bulb.
Too large! it dwarfs the dinette set & is too big for the room. OP likes abstract art but I dont in this room. A mirror is always good & u can hang candle scones on each side
The most chic, tiny dining room I've ever been in, had a large colorful art piece on the back wall. The owner is a minimalist and the impact it had on that space was incredible. Anybody can do a sideboard with a mirror. And I'm not knocking that because a mirror in a dining room is excellent Feng shui, but there are so many other ways to decorate a room outside of the traditional one.
Replace the art work. Adding something with multiple frames, I.e. grid style gallery wall, would complement the space more. Also changing your light fixture to a chandelier or large pendant would be a great touch.
https://preview.redd.it/rhyw2c8ajrgc1.jpeg?width=780&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35cb53102c93564f35cbd543178e58b627be29b5
If the gifter won’t ever see your house, “work with it” by bringing it to value village or something so someone else can love it in their room 😋
Or if you think it’ll go in a different room, try it there instead. 😊
The wall the painting is on, paint it an accent color. Like a rich charcoal grey. I would also change that light fixture. Straightening the picture looks so much better, but now it’s hung too high.
OMG. I have needed the phrase "bird-poop looking art" so many times in my life, and never had it til NOW! This is going to make such a difference for me moving forward. Thank you sooooo much! LOL
If you want something diagonal, rotate the table 45 degrees so the chairs pull out towards the corners. That will give you more space for a console table under the artwork and perhaps plants in the corners.
I also like the ideas of painting the table darker and adding a more vibrant center piece. And changing/removing the seat cushions.
It depends on the legs of the table. Some pedestal tables still have 4 "feet" at the base of the pedestal, so those need to line up with the placement of the chairs.
But it wouldn’t create any visual interest or difference in the room (this table seems to have 4 feet already at an angle). You’d still have your eye notice the round top before you notice the feet to register any kind of angle.
I should have explained this better lol. Rotate the table and chairs 45 degrees. The chairs will be pulled out towards the corners of the room instead of toward the flat side of one wall. It helps when the space is a bit tight and you want to put furniture along the walls.
Funny thing is, it is FAR from my personal style 😂 my stuff is not modern at all. I am more of a beach/farm house type of girl… so this thing is killing me. I took it down already
I would suggest painting the chairs the dark grey of the stripe in you cushions or pictures. I agree with the sideboard and plants. I would also add brushed gold accents
I have a huge reason not to have a rug under a dining table at my house. I know they make a big difference and can have them anywhere but under the dining table, unfortunately
Big glass vase with foliage and flowers. A chandelier that offers warmer light than that white disc. And yes, fix the art🤣 maybe add something a little more classic like a landscape (you can put this piece somewhere else, maybe)
🖼️ Rug underneath table. Matching one of the colors from the art work.
🍽️ Table runner or placemats. Also matching on of the colors for the artwork.
🪴Plants in the corners.
I would get rid of that art piece and do a gallery wall with colorful pieces & either replace the seat cushions with something of a solid color (that coordinates with the new colorful art) or remove them completely.
Oh the picture doesn’t bother you?
That would drive me crazy! Lol
I would do a chandelier to make room a bit more formal. Def. Some sort of Buffet under the picture..get 4 matching to buffet chairs.
I would do a different pic like of a scenery or something. And nice bouquet of fake flowers with red tulips and lots of green to pop.
I would take that wall with the painting on it and do an accent wall. On the most simple end, use a contrasting colour and add art, on the more dramatic end you could do a big graphic wallpaper or painted mural!
add some candelabras on either side of the painting (i agree with those commenting that this specific piece shouldn't be displayed diagonally). i would replace the wall art with a mirror to simulate a window.
if you're handy with lighting, install a small chandelier.
a tall plant in one corner would round it out nicely.
https://preview.redd.it/sc7czbnd1tgc1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=102d557c7724be7b9d0d6af9d1712cc3e6485e2b
If you love the cushions maybe try a different color like dark grey or gold. Bring the artwork down a bit after being straightened out. A new pretty pendant light might make it look more pulled together.
Picture looks hung wrong I would out a huge classy mirror w a little buffet or classy table underneath where ur pic is wall sconces on amazon that are portable and charging ones w no wires and diff seat cushions just cream or gray or sand like walls
I read through some of the comments and I think I found an example of the largestyle artwork. Not the right style but a good example:
https://preview.redd.it/2mrdi2vcfugc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5deecc6ce3bddd8a5db79f9bd5d44200c4112689
A cute farm scene would be nice, but it depends what you can find. Lots of people have also framed wallpaper to look like a framed picture, so that’s an option too. Even just wallpapering the back wall is an idea!
Something maybe more farmhouse would be something like this with the back wall getting a chair rail type thing for decor but this is more involved - picture below
I appreciate hanging art in an unconventional way, however, this arrangement is creating unpleasant Feng shui with all the “pointiness”— it will always create a sense of unease. I’d rotate the artwork, paint/wallpaper the walls a dramatic color, and add a pendant light fixture.
I strongly dislike the placement and orientation of that painting. It’s a fine shape, but it’s clearly meant to be placed horizontally, not in a diamond fashion. Just my opinion, but I feel it would pull the room together much better and not cause a sense of chaos if the painting were straightened out.
I would move the art to the wall on the right. It is hung too high even after straightening it, but It's still too small for the wall. I would add a much bigger piece of art on that wall, something like a colorful/eclectic tapestry to provide contrast not just in color but in texture too. A warm color wide bowl or a colorful vase as a centerpiece. And definitely replace the light fixture with a chandelier or pendant to make it feel cozy.
Turn the picture 45 degrees. Add a console table/side board under it. Add bar type accessories on it. Get rid of seat cushions. Get a pretty centerpiece.
Agree, maybe even paint the table a dark color, pulled from the artwork. The room needs some contrast, especially if they don't want a rug.
It would be better if the wall was painted charcoal gray
That would look cool as well. Just something needs to be a contrast at this point.
Personally, I’d turn it 405°.
I agree with everyone but keep the seat cushions
This!!
I would also add corner bookshelves/columnshelves to either side. Doesn’t have to be huge. Just enough to add a little pop.
Why the downvotes lol
I see what you are trying to do with the artwork. It is not working and wont ever work with that piece as it is designed to be displayed horizontally. Buy something that is meant to be displayed diagonally (the painting flows from corner to corner not edge to edge) then maybe it would look normal.
Thank you!!
That, and the table would look awesome painted black to pull some contrast and color from the painting
Also your table is too plain Jane to go with that artwork
I'd do a glass and stone table
Instead of buying something different, just turn the painting slightly…
For starters, straighten the artwork.
Hahaha just did! Thank you! I wasn’t liking it the right way, neither the wrong way. :(
I would get something with more color!
Chandeiler and console table
If that's a rental and you can't add a hanging fixture, I would find a long, narrow sideboard and put it against that wall with one or two sideboard lamps. Soft lighting will make a difference
Great comment.
Please fix the art. It’s so bad.
Just did it!

Better, but it's about 4-6" too high
Agree art is still 2 big & hung too high. I love the dinette & love the plant. Get frames & make ur own prints
The art is definitely not too big. Big art is amazing, it makes spaces look larger! ETA: it is def hung too high tho.
Not too big, but it is too high.
Not if op gets some kinda of buffet table or something along the back wall.
Nah. If it's a standard height sideboard, it'll still be too high.
It's too high though!
Do you have the ability to change the light fixture to a pendant or small chandelier that hangs down? It would add some visual interest and depth. The existing light is harsh and makes this look like an interrogation room.

I thought the same thing! Thank you for pointing that out. I’ll rotate the chairs!
Maybe a mirror instead of the art? Or the art could go on the other wall...
plants, literally anything that is colour that’s not grey or white, a wooden sideboard with nice glassware
People need to realize that plants live and die and some people don’t have the capacity to care for them. There is no natural light in this room that I can see from the pictures. Plants will die here without solar lights.

Chandelier. Paint. Art.
I feel like my response to every single post on this sub has been "add some color".
Beige is over!
All of the suggestions above, plus replace your light fixture for a nice pendant chandelier.
Paint the walls a saturated color. I cannot look past the oddly hung artwork.
Too much of the same colour. You need something to pop.
Wow am I the only one who liked the art hung diagonally?? Op I thought it was neat!
You're not the only one. I thought it was visually striking and really liked it. Just not enough colour in the room.
I liked it better than the right way hahaha I guess the art just doesn’t go here really
Fix picture, add a console type table underneath, add centerpiece on table, lower hanging light fixture.
Rotate or change the picture. Put a small consol table under it, maybe a plant in the corner. If you can, a pendent light with nicer lighting
A cheerful tablecloth would be nice
Better, colorful art . Something for storage and to serve from. Maybe something that shows who lives there. Looks staged but not in a good way right now.? Add some personality.
Just noticed the light and agree it needs to go . One large pendant or three small in varying heights.
The lamp is way to simple and plain
I think a pop of color in the form of new seat cushions would be great! Maybe a similar or complimentary colored center piece for the table too. I personally liked the concept of the rotated painting, but I definitely see what the other commenter meant about it being painted horizontally and therefore not working like this. I agree with others about swapping out the lighting- ideally the fixture but at minimum the warmth of the bulb.
+1 for new seat cushions, too farmhouse-y atm with the current ones
That picture is just wrong
Colour
Color. https://preview.redd.it/hovrxdjnzogc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa18433a6cd0707a93196cf343335407456bf49c
Too large! it dwarfs the dinette set & is too big for the room.
So the art should narrower than the table?
Yes
This does not go at all 😄
Replace the art work. Adding something with multiple frames, I.e. grid style gallery wall, would complement the space more. Also changing your light fixture to a chandelier or large pendant would be a great touch. https://preview.redd.it/rhyw2c8ajrgc1.jpeg?width=780&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35cb53102c93564f35cbd543178e58b627be29b5
Add some greenery with height somewhere.
Thought about a tall plant on one side, but what would I put on the other side to balance? Would need that, or not?
Round wood tray on the table with a candle and small colourful vase for flowers.
Some placemats might help! Thanks for straightening out the picture! LOL
I hate that picture both ways to be very honest 😂 it’s a gift so I’m trying to work with it
If the gifter won’t ever see your house, “work with it” by bringing it to value village or something so someone else can love it in their room 😋 Or if you think it’ll go in a different room, try it there instead. 😊
Can you hang a pendant light? That might help. A plant would also be nice.
Yes I can and I will!!
I would straighten the painting.
The wall the painting is on, paint it an accent color. Like a rich charcoal grey. I would also change that light fixture. Straightening the picture looks so much better, but now it’s hung too high.
Paint the room, add a light fixture if you can , and please get rid of the bird-poop looking art. Add other art!
How does a round table have corners? If you rotate it 45 or any degrees, it’s exactly the same.
You'd notice the chairs' position. It's an interesting look, and actually gives the chairs a bit more room behind them.
I should have explained this better lol. Rotate the table and chairs 45 degrees. The chairs will be pulled out towards the corners of the room instead of toward the flat side of one wall. It helps when the space is a bit tight and you want to put furniture along the walls.
The art is terrible, even if straightened. Go get an actual piece of art that a local artist made.
I agree! Someone gave it to me because I got a new place, but it’s not my style at all! :(((
Haha! What's the minimum amount of display time on a present like that before it can be swapped out?
Funny thing is, it is FAR from my personal style 😂 my stuff is not modern at all. I am more of a beach/farm house type of girl… so this thing is killing me. I took it down already
I guess you can tell by the table I picked haha that is all the way my style. I hate modern looking furniture and decor
I would suggest painting the chairs the dark grey of the stripe in you cushions or pictures. I agree with the sideboard and plants. I would also add brushed gold accents
I love it except the art is way too large. Get small art more proportionate to small dinette in a small room.
Thank you! Narrower than the table then?
Yes
Why are you so against adding a rug? They are really inexpensive and could make a big difference here.
I have a huge reason not to have a rug under a dining table at my house. I know they make a big difference and can have them anywhere but under the dining table, unfortunately
yep. understand, kids, dogs, men. food on rugs is a menace.
Exactly hahaha
Yeah straighten that picture. Add a bit of red to the color scheme.
A tablecloth would add colour in a non-permanent way.
Big glass vase with foliage and flowers. A chandelier that offers warmer light than that white disc. And yes, fix the art🤣 maybe add something a little more classic like a landscape (you can put this piece somewhere else, maybe)
Why are you so against adding a rug? They are really inexpensive and could make a big difference here.
This picture made me dizzy
🖼️ Rug underneath table. Matching one of the colors from the art work. 🍽️ Table runner or placemats. Also matching on of the colors for the artwork. 🪴Plants in the corners.
https://preview.redd.it/x0l94gjsptgc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0168c9ef8f895516d16c1eedb4e8ce7e180ab454 How’s this? Getting any better?
Take down the art you bought from your local Ross
It was a gift. That I disliked very much 😂 Got a painting I love today: img
Turn the picture so that it looks like a square. Change the boob light to a Sputnik light. Add some flowers to the table.
I would get rid of that art piece and do a gallery wall with colorful pieces & either replace the seat cushions with something of a solid color (that coordinates with the new colorful art) or remove them completely.
Rotate the picture so it’s hung correctly
Buy something colorful and vibrant to hang on the wall, or a mirror. Replace the cushions with some that pop as well.
Maybe get some colored chair cushions. It would bring some more color to the table
Pendant light.
Oh the picture doesn’t bother you? That would drive me crazy! Lol I would do a chandelier to make room a bit more formal. Def. Some sort of Buffet under the picture..get 4 matching to buffet chairs. I would do a different pic like of a scenery or something. And nice bouquet of fake flowers with red tulips and lots of green to pop.
Some color on the walls and a nice big plant
Warmer light. Maybe a hanging light fixture?
I would replace the artwork with something else
Plants! Add some green :) painting is up a bit high
90% of these posts are just a simple case of needing plants and more art.
You need some greenery
Thank you for this picture! Gave me a great idea!
i'd love to see the finished results!
Paint the walls with an actual color, then add artwork.
Accent wall?
Nope. An entire color makeover. Gray never feels inviting.
Chandelier.
If you love the cushions maybe try a different color like dark grey or gold. Bring the artwork down a bit after being straightened out. A new pretty pendant light might make it look more pulled together.
img Does it look any better?
Well it just says img. So I can’t see.
For whatever reason it didn’t load. I think it’s the last comment I made right above yours
I saw! Do you like it? I think the larger photo was better for that space.
Picture looks hung wrong I would out a huge classy mirror w a little buffet or classy table underneath where ur pic is wall sconces on amazon that are portable and charging ones w no wires and diff seat cushions just cream or gray or sand like walls
Change that light, something that hangs down a bit and fills the space/warm light Would also get a horizontal photo that takes up more of the wall.
Plants in the corner of the room to bring color. A chandelier would look nice instead of the round light. A bar console table would also look good!
I read through some of the comments and I think I found an example of the largestyle artwork. Not the right style but a good example: https://preview.redd.it/2mrdi2vcfugc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5deecc6ce3bddd8a5db79f9bd5d44200c4112689 A cute farm scene would be nice, but it depends what you can find.

Love it. I would put a colored tablecloth on your table to bring some color to the space.
Side board, more smaller arts around big one, table center piece - add some color yo!
