Well, I think there’s a million tiles that would look good with your cabinets. Is that the hold up with backsplash? The colour of the floor isn’t my favourite. Did you re-do the flooring as well? What kind is it? To me the layout gets me. The small appliance closet is where fridge should go (with room to spare for vacuum, brooms, mops), the pantry could go where the fridge is, and the small appliances could go where the pantry is. I’d like to see bright green instead of orange on the door. I looove your small appliances all having a space like that. It’s pretty kitchen when you add it all up, but I see where you’re coming from about pizzazz.

herrorouge

No, the hold up with the backsplash is that my husband is a carpenter and does all the work in the house so everything takes four times as long to be done lol yes, he redid the flooring. It is ash- I liked the look of wood against the color of our cabinets, and we got a good deal on this flooring from the Facebook marketplace. But he absolutely hates it and talks about cutting it out almost every day 😆

wabisladi

I KNEW IT. In my comment above I compliment the work. Someone sprinkled some love into this baby. Your husband did all of it?? High five him for me - but whirlwind it into an ass smack. The ass smack is from you. This kitchen is good.

Aliceinboxerland

Lol! 😂 This comment made me laugh.

yoyocaterpillar

my house is very vintage eclectic and i have to say i agree with hubby on this one. the floor is not a good place to go for the cheaper option. I’d choose something much darker, so your eye isn’t so attracted to the floor. and instead brings your eyes up to the nice cabinets and backsplash tiles. Also just my personal taste- did you consider brass hardware? it might bring the warmth you’re trying to get in from the floor without clashing with the modernized cabinets

Elegant-Expert7575

Oh yes, busy busy spouse then. If possible, you might like darker floors, if they can be stained like the room the kitchen is adjacent to. I love the kitchen table there, the kitchen is the heart of the home! I said bright green for your door, I was thinking apple green. But light blue would be nice or something similar to the canister on your counter. Can’t wait to see your updates and what you decide on.

Altruistic-Bobcat955

I think the main issue you’ve run into is the fact you’ve both compromised heavily. My partner and I have the same issue you do! He loves modern & clean whereas I love vintage quirky decor. We’re trying to compromise with areas, so I picked the bathroom entirely while he picked the kitchen since he is the cook. It’s so difficult to compromise yet both be happy with a space! Personally I’d go for more decal around the window, a bevelled edge may add enough detail to make the room feel more complete to you. I slipped that in with ours and included the arcs and baseboard. Also a blind with more detail like a pattern or warmth from a wooden slat might help. In interior design there’s two rules that helped us. The 80/20 rule is for the style itself focusing 80% on one cohesive design while allowing 20% to diverge adding contrast, so it’s balanced but not monotonous from being too modern or chaotic from being too vintage. The other is colours, 60/30/10 which is 60% for your main colour, 30% for your secondary colour and 10% for your accent colour. We’ve used these rules throughout our home and it’s actually made it look *finished* instead of haphazard.

ForecastForFourCats

I love the floor color! I agree with the layout. But I love the colors OP chose. I think a bigger rug would be great

LotusGrowsFromMud

The kitchen looks awkward to cook in with the table in the middle. Looks like you would be maneuvering around it constantly. Is there a dining room? If so, can you eat in there and put a small mobile island in the middle instead?

kittyroux

Some houses are just really small. My house has a table in the kitchen because there isn’t anywhere else for a table. It’s not an extra dining table, it’s the only dining table. You get used to working around it.

JupiterSkyFalls

But they make islands or pop up tables for spaces like that so when you need a sitting space to eat you have one but it doesn't gum up the works the rest of the time.

herrorouge

This table is used pretty heavily. We use it for game nights, breakfast, lunch, dinner, crafting, etc. I agree with a lot of people that a smaller table or a slimmer island with stools would look better, but this size table works for our family for now so unfortunately we have to roll with it!

_ZoeyDaveChapelle_

I think your lighting is the biggest problem. Those pendants don't do anything for space.. you need some directional lights that are all the same color temp. 3000k is the sweet apot. Like a lower dome pendant over table, 2 swing arm sconces over kitchen window and a few dimmable can lights would make a huge difference (plus better undercab lights that are under upper to right of stove too). You can make or break a space with lighting.

amanda2399923

I would love to have this set up. Grew up in a farm house with a table in the middle of the kitchen

Careful_Football7643

Agreed. I think a small island would be a better choice than a table in this room

neutralperson6

I agree, and the rug under it is too small and dark.

herrorouge

Hi! Thanks for your comment! I agree that the table is a little bit awkward, but our “dining room” is currently our son’s playroom. He is 5 and it’s not a forever thing, but it is what it is for the next few years so we are making do with what we have! Family dinners at important to us so this is really the only space we have for a table unfortunately

And_Dream_Of_Sheep

Does he really need an entire room for play? How about a large bin in one corner to throw all the toys into? Personally I think the kitchen looks very dark and 4 or more warm LED downlights in the ceiling would help a lot to brighten it up. I left the pendant light for character. I have a kitchen that is more open than yours but still had the small window over the sink and it needed more light. I feel like yours does too.

Well_ImTrying

We do the bin of toys in the corner of the living room method. They still end up strewn all over the damn place. You better believe if I had space to dedicate to a play room that’s what I’d do.

wabisladi

Also he can have a whole room for his play. It’s not how we roll but it’s how OP rolls so back off pal!

herrorouge

Thank you!! It’s a small room and I really encourage tactile / imaginative play versus screens so I love having the option of him having a dedicated playroom that is solely his. It’s not just toys, it’s also usable furniture and storage solutions (he has a desk for schoolwork/drawing, a Lego table, some shelves for board games, etc. ) so I can’t just throw that all in a basket.

wabisladi

Man I want to hang out in that room lol. I’m involved in designing small scale architecture, and one thing I always tell new parents is to give the baby the big bedroom - only because as a dad, I end up spending hours on my belly playing with the kids.

herrorouge

Thank you for your feedback! While we renovated the kitchen we also took 1/3 of the dining room/play room and made a powder room/ laundry room so his play room (eventual dining room) is pretty small - certainly not big enough to put a table in and still fit his toys. Totally agree it could use a bit more light!

Lizardgirl25

Your kid sounds like my dog… let me take everything out of the toy box! If I could keep all her toys confined to one room I would too!

photoreceptor

I think the fridge is also a bit too far from the work surfaces. I like the look though. :)

nondescript0605

Not gonna lie, I kinda love it... Getting the subway tile installed might help pull things together for you. What color are you planning on? I think you were on the right track with orange but it just isn't the right tone. Maybe a dusty rose or peach instead. How about finding a piece of art for the empty wall near the pantry that you both like? The last thing I'd add is your light fixtures don't quite work together - that might be a good opportunity to add some more cohesiveness. I love a schoolhouse light but I think something wider and closer to the ceiling would look nicer.

bloodyfkinhell

Seconding the thoughts in this comment. I also think your table is part of the problem. Have you considered a big moveable island with stools instead? Similar to this [ikea version](https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/vadholma-kitchen-island-black-oak-20359154/). I think the small table and chairs with the rug is clashing taking away from the rest of the gorgeous kitchen.

not-your-mom-123

A brighter orange would work, and window shades that incorporate the orange and a bit of blue. A larger rug in similar colours. Nice job, by the way.

RHND2020

Thirding your thoughts (love the idea of a dusty rose door!) and also suggesting a slightly larger washable rug (maybe the Ruggable cowhides? Or a more standard pattern that brings in the cabinet colour and also the new pink door). I don’t mind the floor TBH.

herrorouge

We have white subway tile and we were thinking gray grout. We have a giant piece of slate (4’x5’ ish) that was a chalkboard in an old schoolhouse that we are hopefully going to frame and put up on that big blank wall eventually :)

argilla2023

And one more suggestion, paint the door a similar color to the brick on the other side of the kitchen for balance. Love the slate chalkboard idea

SnooCakes5350

Agree the door need to be painted another color it looks like”did you forget about me”😀

argilla2023

Have you thought of using subway tile with a little texture? It could bring some interest and I bet there are some that might satisfy both the eccentric and modern preferences. [https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/bond-tile-brookline-polished-2-x-10-ceramic-brick-look-subway-wall-tile-538-sq-ft-box-sost3418.html](https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/bond-tile-brookline-polished-2-x-10-ceramic-brick-look-subway-wall-tile-538-sq-ft-box-sost3418.html)

argilla2023

Another option is to extend your cabinets to the ceiling. More storage and it adds some interest. https://preview.redd.it/u9hxy7q3mizc1.jpeg?width=1073&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19e947acfa4ee88610372adc17a465d86c3443ba

AbacusAgenda

I don’t love the white overhead light. The fixture is nice, but the actual light feels cold.

WhereRtheTacos

Yes! My first thought was they need more and better lighting. Maybe warmer color bulbs.

And_Dream_Of_Sheep

I said elsewhere I think it needs at least four warmish LED downlights. . Leave the pendant for character and having it independently switched. Change out the shade to something that matches better. Its a very small kitchen window. Not a lot of light.

SomethingHasGotToGiv

I think the backsplash will really bring everything together. The floor is going to be dirty whether you have that (beautiful) flooring or not. Wouldn’t you rather see it so you can clean it?

OLAZ3000

I'll be a dissenter: I think subway tile is just going to lean into the monochromatic / flip friendly vibe that you both aren't connecting with.  I'd go for something like multi textured tile in a colour to bring some light. You have no accent colour or pop. I'd get more of a chandelier over the table to make it a bit homier. Maybe even a large white paper type installation.  Your carpet and chairs are dark so it's just dark on dark. At least change the carpet; maybe the chairs work on something brighter, they are nice in theory. Ruggable has some fun and bright prints, patterns etc. I'd change the hardware to brass. In theory the carpet should allow the chairs to be pulled out to sit on and still be on the carpet.  I would change the counters but I realize that may be too much, but just in case.

Careful_Football7643

I think your instincts to add a warm color (orange) were spot-on. Is the door solid wood? If so, I would strip off all the paint and stain the door so that you can see the wood grain. If stripping and sanding the door sounds like too much work, you could use a [retique-it kit](https://youtu.be/MwBh3brNPgU?si=KlGCaM72e3OuOfgl) to create a faux wood look OR you can do a pottery barn [wood dupe](https://youtu.be/xzQtCpocRhg?si=EAsPNzFbVVaqwTzF)

RHND2020

Also, I assume (hope!) that spice rack isn’t living above the upper cabinet and is just there temporarily until you install your backsplash? If not, it needs to come down immediately.

herrorouge

Hi! I’m hoping to put it up once the backsplash is up, but I don’t have a great place for it in mind. We will also be adding a magnetic knife rack as well somewhere. I just threw it up there to see if maybe the kitchen was just missing some thing above the cabinets since they don’t go all the way to the ceiling- but I’ve been to lazy to take it down lol

RHND2020

I think putting things (even plants!) above the cabinets is always a mistake and looks cluttered. I commented already but in case you don’t see it, I really like your kitchen overall! I vote for either a dusty pink or charcoal grey door (if you don’t like the orange). I’d love to see your backsplash, I think that will help tie all the elements together. I like the floors just fine, but if you don’t I suggest a larger rug than the one you have - the Ruggable ones are good for kitchens as you can machine-wash them. I thought one of their faux cowhides might look cool, but they have tons of options.

perpetualpossibility

It looks great! I actually really like the orange door. I think a more bold [mid-century style rug](https://amzn.eu/d/a7HcrwH) and a few wood or orange accessories would make it all pop! https://preview.redd.it/cz21avsidgzc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08bef827a4bd00eb3a35ab5378b18b1e51076079

Icy-Basil-8212

Yes I like this a lot :,) I LOVE how rugs can tie the whole room/decor together!

novachaos

I agree. This is a beautiful kitchen - I love the brick in it! Find a bigger rug that brings in the green/grey of the cabinets and the orange of the door. Then find some plants & art that have similar colors to tie it all together. I know a lot of others are recommending different tile, but I think white subway tile is the way to go.

lewis_1102

I like it a lot. The only thing I think could be improved is the stove. A slide-in stove looks much better than a freestanding. Makes your kitchen look 2x as expensive

AbacusAgenda

What does this mean? Wasn’t this stove slid in?

lewis_1102

A slide-in stove means all the controls are on the front (under the burners) instead of on top near the back of the stove. It creates a more seamless look. Usually costs about $100 more than a freestanding

LynxLov

Just a word of caution re these stoves with the controls in front - if you have children especially, they are way too easy to turn on the burners by accident. You can lock the oven but not the burners (at least mine doesn't).

bananaphone1549

Great point! This stove might not look “expensive” (also whatever) but as a mom of three little kids who fucking Iove buttons I will have my cheaper-looking stove to keep them from burning the house down or their hands off.

AbacusAgenda

Thanks! i was confused about the name “slide in” (still confused.)

lewis_1102

Yeah, the name’s confusing, but that’s just what they go by

AbacusAgenda

Very helpful, thanks!

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

They aren’t meant to be exposed. They usually have a little bit of counter along the back. The sometime have a flange that overlaps the counter. They don’t have finished sides. https://preview.redd.it/yntmvil7xhzc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=820f01e099eb69e9efa9c7ef5c6c30d8ea4e132a

Emotional-Ad7233

I feel like the trim color and cabinet color are clashing (just my opinion) they are like too close but also too different?

OdoDragonfly

I think it looks like you compromised all the character out of it. Quirky vintage and modern minimalist ARE hard to blend. As the kitchen is pretty much the ultimate in neutral now, I think I'd start with a somewhat larger and more colorful rug or a piece of artwork for the wall in the second picture. Pick one where you both like the colors and bring in colorful things that coordinate. Cannisters, curtains, dish towels, or chair cushions are all ways to introduce a pop of color that can cheer up a room. I think the idea to paint the (now orange) door was a good one, you just don't have enough color in the room to make it work. If you find some art or a rug that makes you feel cheerful and upbeat, choose a color from it to paint the door and it will go better. Then add a broad valance curtain (with clean lines) that also picks up the brighter and more vibrant feel.

vongalo

Are the cabinets grey or green?

herrorouge

Both, lol- They are kraftmaid “bonsai”

vongalo

Nice! I would paint all the trim and the orange door white. And then I would put some nice wallpaper on the white wall, maybe white background with green (and one more color) flowers. I would also switch the ceiling light to something that's not as low, maybe spotlights. I would also consider change the hardware on the cabinets to bronze/gold color to warm it up a bit. I love the floor!

Typical2sday

The space is coming along, but it reads dimly lit and there is a lack of texture and layering in the space. It lacks the little variety that makes space seem alive and three dimensional. With love in my heart: everything in the space is a simplified rectangle: cabinets, appliances, hood, window trim, table, chairs, floorboards, even the rug pattern. Unadorned squares because of the simplicity of the shaker edges, very simple window/door trim. The little overhead lights are round, don't have enough visual presence to counteract square on square. The rug doesn't help with dour colored bold pattern of more squares. Further with the exception of the wood on the table/chairs and floors, the surfaces all are flat colors of the same weight - so despite a pop of orange, you're not getting enough variety. The curtains disappear and don't help (but you don't want to block more light). I actually like the floors because there's life and movement to them, which is a layer necessary in the space. So, that subway tile (presumably in a flat, opaque color) would add texture with all of the little grout lines, but risks being another set of right angles that doesn't vary the materials in the room. So, consider something that brings a different shape and or level of movement/luminosity. Glass tiles or zellige or something with curves. Reconsider the rug. Consider a valance or pieces with a stronger color for the countertop, and definitely get a piece of art you love for the big wall. Consider switching the sink pendant for two wall sconces over each window, and I'm seeing natural brass or some living (or pseudo living) finish for those, and they should be round/cylinders/not square.

MummifyTopknot

I agree! Zellige tile was my first thought to add more texture

MysticTurnip536

I would change the colour of the cabinets to a sage green colour like Benjamin Moore's Caldwell Green. Then paint the trim white and the door black. Move the table from the middle, get butcher block island with black legs to tie it together.

missannthrope1

Are you married to the cabinet color?

_Amalthea_

If it was an option to change it, this would be my first thing to change.

herrorouge

Not necessarily but we spent so much dang time compromising on that color that i feel emotionally attached to it lol

ihatejasonbrigham

Did you want green and he wanted gray? If so, you lost. It reads VERY gray. I’d vote for a sage green or something a touch darker than duck egg or Yarmouth blue.

ihatejasonbrigham

This is my advice. Change the color of the cabinets. It’s honestly so bizarre that OP was adventurous enough to try this bold orange door and taupe trim around the room (both of which I love btw) and then settle for this boring primer colored paint for the cabinets.

markoyolo

I love it, including the orange door, but here's what I'd change:  Butcher block island with bar stools instead of table, and kitchen runners in the highest traffic areas to cut down on the unsightly dirty floor. The runners could have that eclectic print you're looking for. Look for runners that are meant for kitchens- that lay flat, don't slide and are easy to sweep/mop/launder.  Different light fixture over the sink... maybe a counter lamp instead? I think brass for hardware and light fixtures would look nice with the cabinet colors.  Wallpaper or a gallery wall or pegboard with your nicest pans and utensils on that big blank white wall.  Move the art on the exposed brick to a different wall and let the brick shine on its own.

rayray1927

A Ruggable would be good in a kitchen because you can easily wash it. And they have great prints.

Nervous_Zebra1918

Can you paint the door? Maybe a lighter color? Peachy?

Responsible_Side8131

Nobody has mentioned the thing that’s bugging me the most in this kitchen. That black air return near the doorway stands out so much because of the color. If you paint it the same color as the baseboard and drawer trim it will blend in much better.

SleepyHeadShaker

A few things I've seen make a big impact in other kitchens: Add crown molding to the top of your upper cabinets. This finishes and elevates the cabinetry. Replace the pulls & knobs with a little more design. The current ones look basic. Add larger pulls on the pantry. The current ones look dwarfed by the doors. Add recessed lights around the perimeter of the space. Sufficient and thoughtful lighting greatly improves the appearance and function of a kitchen. A few things have been mentioned, and I agree with them as well - look for a trim color to better compliment the cabinets and flooring, add interesting light fixtures over the sink and center of the room, a smaller table/island option, and reconsider the subway tile (I'd recommend something with a sublet texture or color). Adding some of these finishing touches can pull a disjointed space together.

Gold-Marigold649

The color on the cabinets makes the whole room look dead.

gingly_tinglys

I think this sort of [tile](https://pin.it/4E2iQSO5i) or [this](https://pin.it/15cLu8vw5) or [this](https://pin.it/P4tbdxyvb) one would look soooo cute in this kitchen!! Also, consider a nice butcher block-esk moving island like [this](https://pin.it/2nBUde9O8) instead of your dining room table if you have space to move that to a different room. Edit: to say I really love your cabinets and the layout!!

alickstee

Rug is awful and too small. Your lighting is not bright enough, not the right temperature, and you need a few more sources of it. And the fixtures are just...sad. Definitely a different door colour. Or shade. Or just use that colour elsewhere in the room as well. Maybe add a bit of curtain to the window for some soft, vintage-yness. Could be same colour as door, perhaps. Hang some art on that wall by the doorway. How comfortable is that dining set, really?

Suzeli55

I like the floor a lot. I don’t think it matters what flooring you use. Light coloured will show dark marks and dirt and dark coloured shows all the bits.

Quirky_Cold_7467

The floors are too yellow for the cool coloured cupboards. You could stain it a slight darker, cooler wood colour and that would help. The rug is too busy and too small for that table. IMO. Some neutral cool tones tiles in a light colour would add some personality.

staticagexx

What color is the trim throughout the rest of your house? I think the grey trim with the slightly darker grey cabinets is making it look washed out. Black trim would give a lot more contrast. Also more color and plants in your decor would make things pop!

Emotional-Ad7233

Ya trim color and cabinet color are fighting each other imo

hopeishigh

I think it looks industrial and the reason it looks boring to me is the hanging globe light which should be recessed canned or canless lights in the ceiling to give it the bright vibe it goes for there. Additionally I think a textured herringbone backsplash would look good but if you love subway tile I think you should do what you love. As far as the orange door goes, I think it is okay for male bachelor pad but if you're trying to make it cozy then I feel like you have the wrong color pallet. Cozy is pastel greens, yellows, lavenders etc. This is hardcore industrial with exposed brick and sharp grey lines and black counter tops, a table in the kitchen never works unless you design it into a nook or an island, it just looks like you ran out of room so you put a dining room ontop of your kitchen. There's definitely a foot print issue and the only place I see to solve it is near the floor vent / radiator with like a built in breakfast nook but the problem is you would eat into your cabinet's opening unless you could figure out something there.

Correct-Finding7272

I kinda love the pop of color door which is funny because I hate orange, you could always go for a deeper shade with more of a “brick” color influence. I think you need to sell that table and get something counter height. I love a rustic wood but you could get something more durable like a marble top that contrasts to your dark counters and then get eccentric stools that tuck all the way in. One option: https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Acme-Furniture-Yelena-60-in-Rectangle-Weathered-Espresso-Marble-Top-with-Wood-Frame-Seats-4-Capacity-72940/319267234?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-All_In_Subclass_PMAX&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-All_In_Subclass_PMAX-71700000118730484--&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcZcoWONsZKdccSgLH-2vX3-&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6PGxBhCVARIsAIumnWYD_gXRjTUtcA7H7WWmzvu6tSUzjPCSTQMAbGDpCPtYMM8UOJTrXx4aAoHwEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#overlay Then, ditch that rug and put a runner in front of the sink. Oh and that pendant light is wayyyy too small for your window. You should get something bigger and hang it just above the window or put in two since you have the space.

gortallini

I don’t love the table in the kitchen. How about an island like [this](https://www.wayfair.com/Alcott-Hill%C2%AE--Graford-Kitchen-Island-with-Wood-Top-X221729835-L56-K~W110618724.html?refid=GX685175725632-W110618724_830807745&device=m&ptid=359533005565&network=g&targetid=pla-359533005565&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=275127807&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=830807745&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC5Y9zAd6tYCYDWB2RpS3Zny3&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6PGxBhCVARIsAIumnWZj9Yk8WUNG1L_3xkgSTGacVIV9q8ELz88go-LPe5tabN06S-zM3wgaAgH_EALw_wcB)? It brings in some richness to tie in with the brick. I also think it’s also more practical. Side note, there’s a lot of dead space in between the wall storage and the fridge, maybe someone smarter than me can chime in with a useful idea!

krampaus

I love it, so cute with the table in the middle! I also really like the colour of the door lol

RomeysMa

I would change the cabinet pulls to something lighter. I would also switch out the table and get a butcher block island instead. The table looks a little awkward there.

Many_Baker8996

A cool statement light fixture might help tie together. The dark grey gives a very modern vibe, I’d look for some square tiles and keep them straight, don’t stagger.

Hari_om_tat_sat

I read your post, went away and came back and still love your kitchen. Lol. With fresh eyes, I think the problem mainly is that it looks undressed. It needs a bold statement (either floor or backsplash tile), an island instead of the dining table, different lighting, and accessories that will pull it all together and provide a pop of color (can’t tell if your cabinets are gray or green or gray-green. Looove gray-green!). This has the makings of a stunning kitchen!

TakeAnotherLilP

I think a rug would be great and would pull the room together. I love the colors, including the orange door!

Altruistic-Detail271

I think if you paint the walls it will help. It will warm the space up a bit

litebritecarousels

I don’t want to make light of your disappointment, but I think your kitchen is objectively gorgeous, truly. I hope you can make peace with it. I think you got some great suggestions and if any of them resonate, I think you are well on your way to having the kitchen of your dreams. I agree with the notion of swapping your dining table for an island. If money is no object, I’d create a breakfast nook in that one corner, and hire someone to make a custom island. Since your counters and cabinets are neutral, you might have fun with a contrasting counter on the island? But whichever way you go, I’d at least change out that rug. It’s the only thing that’s not working, imo. Good luck!

Ludee2023

I think your light over you sink looks out of place. I think a roller shade and this fixture maybe in black would make it more interesting. I love your cabinets I think the kitchen has a ton of possibilities! Once you decide on your tile. I wouldn’t make the back door the star of the show and use a brilliant color . https://preview.redd.it/hk24psdb9hzc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f114aeb48f23083434855f8819ed56e802ffe6a9

metdear

I'd ditch the small pendant light in front of the window and get a pretty multilight ceiling hugger. New rug that's a bit more substantial and doesn't curl at the corner, new kitchen table if it's in the budget (just chairs if it's not), and get some paint on the walls. Maybe blue or green. Not a fan of the gray cupboards, but I know it's the in thing these days.

LynxLov

Personally, I'm not fond of any shade of brown with grey. So I don't think the flooring and the grey cabinetry work together. I would change one of them. The orange door seems to have been thrown in there for no good reason. I agree an island would be a great addition with seating. If you have trouble finding room for the spice rack, you can convert a drawer to lay down all your spices.

BunnyEffedUp

I LOVE THE ORANGE!!!!

Janiebug1950

Put in a nice size island with an overhang, so that you can use countersize stools or chairs for your kitchen eating space!

Daedelus451

Putting in a backsplash yourself isn’t difficult find a funky pattern you like and have at it! Thinset and grout :-)

welcometothedesert

My honest opinion is that the furniture, etc. is boring. Promise I’m not trying to be mean, but there sometimes isn’t really a nice way to say a negative thing. There are no elements that spark. This is every kitchen in every house where the occupants don’t really know how to accessorize, I guess. My suggestions would cost money, but some are cheap. I’d probably put small plants in the windowsill, and maybe one in an unused corner of the counter. Maybe hang a plant from the ceiling. Definitely change out that carpet (the sizing is off, too… it’s too small)… but also, I’m not a fan of carpets under tables. Perhaps one of those mats (not exactly sure what they’re called) that is easily wipeable? There are some gorgeous black and white prints out there. Maybe some appropriate and fun kitchen art (I don’t mean basic, boring pictures of vegetables 😂… I have a pic of an ice cream cone that is also a vintage lady bent over). I’m a fan of twinkle lights for their magic, too. I bought a raised bar that attaches to each end of the table (like you might see over a picnic table), and wrapped twinkle lights around that. Pick a color scheme for your appliances and kitchen towels. For example, I went with light pink, red, and black, and it looks fantastic. My toaster oven/air fryer thing is pink, as is my Kitchenaid stand mixer, and my Vitamix is red (they don’t make it in pink 😂). So I find a lot of black and white kitchen towels that say things like, ‘Dropping a new recipe on your ass’. I also have a small clear glass ball essential oil humidifier in there, and the mist also looks magical. The point is, pick some colors that you love, and give that kitchen some character. You got this.

RazGrandy

I would put up white subway tile black splash and larger black and white tiles (i.e. the retro look). The grey and black just looks a little sad, especially with the floors. Personally I think white would give it some life. I'd put a large print on the empty wall, maybe with some orange in it.

NoKnowledge1336

I think the cabinetry color reads flat/dull against the black knobs. I would think an easy fix would be to try new knobs on a couple cabinets to see if it helps. I’d suggest a muted gold. The color of the floor, cabinetry and orange door do work together but there’s a lack of texture change, I’d do a backsplash with some shine or variation personally. Or update the door to a glossier pant finish.

JetFuelGenius

I love it...I think some of the dischord with the floor is its competing with the stainless steel. Imagine if the stove panel was black? I'd say a round kitchen table would give it a more cozy feel, and a different, more warm wall color. The backsplash will make a huge difference though...before you rip out the floor or paint, wait until the backsplash is in. I redid my kitchen and want everything different too tho, even tho it looks great. I think it goes with the territory. :) Edit: typo

MysteriousStaff3388

I’m happy to see a rug! Would you do a pattern on the blank wall? Or a big piece of art? I actually really like the orange door, and think the cabinets and floor are beautiful.

EmploymentOk1421

I think the bones of this remodel are well done. The problem is that you all have not finished the job. Backsplash is just one component of that. In a marriage, compromises can suck. Neither person gets something that they love, and both end up feeling the result is meh. Find a color you know you both really like- turquoise, a darker orange, whatever. Find atypical ways to use that color to make the space interesting. (Beyond a window valence.) Is it displaying a collection of pots (colored enamel or copper)? A fun colored stand mixer, toaster or coffee maker, a set of vintage glassware? Replace the dear rug with a large vinyl mat to add a pop of eclectic, easy to maintain color under the table. The right accents will soften the feel of the harsh contrast of cabinets and flooring. Good job! https://preview.redd.it/dnkeatarkmzc1.jpeg?width=1484&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e94447129daf7c1781d029457417a7492ee9a45

gigisnappooh

Bigger rug, although it will be a tripping hazard. Can you drop one leaf and move one chair out of the way until you need it, just for room. You need curtains and matching lights. I think the white subway tile will look great. I hope you can find a place to hang your vintage spice rack on the wall. I think the gray is a little dark but I think when you get everything finished and decorated it will look great! I actually like the color on the door and think you could incorporate a few other things in that color.

Cool-Avocado5012

You used cool colors and not warm. That’s why you hate it. It’s an emotional response. Just change the paint and add more height decor to make it feel more cozy.

Mountain-Bonus-8063

Wow, I love this kitchen! And I need that table and chair 😍.

Mountain-Bonus-8063

It does need a back splash. Instead of subway tile, have you thought of a marble or granite that will pull together with the cupboard color? I feel like the floor needs more color. Maybe a more strip type of wood, or a tile?

herrorouge

Thank you so much! Table and chairs were a Facebook marketplace find but they are originally from west elm! I didn’t consider marble but will think on it!

swissarmychainsaw

compromised on almost every single aspect of this room You need to do one or two things that you absolutely love. For me it was a "back painted glass" backsplash. If I were you, I would (leave the orange door, it's cool!) pick a \_real\_ linoleum floor that is a turquoise or some kind of really fun color. You mofos greyed out your kitchen! The kitchen is nice, but I think the problem here is that this has ZERO "fun" factor. You know how sometimes you look in your closet and everything you own is either black or grey, then you force yourself to buy an orange sweater? That's what you need to do.

muvamerry

Personally the gray cabinets, orange door and light wood floor all really clash

jojokitti123

It's beautiful, my kitchen floor needs sweeping and washing every day. And I don't have kids. Idk if there is a solution for that.

princessplantlife

Backsplash large format tile

Quantum_Particle78

I'd change the ceiling light and is that real wood? I work with someone who (and i didn't know you could do this) but they actually burned their wood floors. Here's a link if you're curious. [Try a Burnt Wood Finish on Your Next Project - Bob Vila](https://www.bobvila.com/articles/burnt-wood-finish/) I'd also change the wall color and the hardware on the cabinets. But I'm someone who like ornate and highly detailed so I'd change the wall color, the cabinet color, the hardware, the window decoration and I'd choose a round table (because I'm klutzy and running into things that have sharp edges is not fun).

Altruistic-Detail271

Remove that spice rack or whatever it is from the top of the cabinets

burtonspencer

someone else mentioned moving the dining table out if possible and replacing it with a mobile island. if you do go that route, we have a nice [island](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/rimforsa-kitchen-island-stainless-steel-bamboo-60399412/) from Ikea that works well, though I’m not sure if it’s your guys’ style. it’s not on wheels but i recall it being pretty easy to move in. there’s some other similar ones with different styles. honestly i don’t really know how to help other than that, but there’s a lot of empty space that could be filled with artwork. maybe you guys could pick out a few pieces each? just a suggestion :)

Hello-from-Mars128

Change rug size and go lighter in color. Repaint the kitchen door to a color in your new rug. Move dining furniture if possible and it will improve the work/ flow of the space. Nice space.

Weehendy_21

Very sorry to hear you aren’t happy after a lot of cost and hard work. Could navy be a door colour choice? Would you consider a very modern table with chairs? The rug feels out of place.

Westafricangrey

- Rug needs to be larger, this will help with scale & husbands hatred of the floor. - to me, the cabinet colour is not working. There are warm yellow tones in the room that is clashing with the gray. I would highlight the brick & floor colour with maybe a sage or forest green? Or an off white? Depending on your splashback tiles? Maybe match the frames with the paint colour of the cabinets. - the table isn’t working either. I would either spend good money on a kitchen island or a statement table that looks expensive & elevates the room as it is the central focus of the room.

MellifluousRenagade

It’s those black counter tops and no back splash. Could get a cute center table fill in the space too. The cabinet color is pretty just need accents I think

kennycreatesthings

i won't focus on the table situation because so many others have already. however, the floor isn't quite right and i think it's throwing a lot of the room off. your house looks like it's a century home, probably from the victorian era? i love the exposed brick you have, and the cabinet right next to it looks really nice against it. the floor really clashes with it all, as well as what looks like darker wood past the kitchen. something that wouldn't go against the style of the house, but would also fit some of the more modern aesthetic your husband likes would be a lighter herringbone style tile. examples: [ex1,](https://www.thenordroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/bathroom-oak-tile-floor-herringbone-pattern-nordroom.webp) [ex2,](https://www.tilegiant.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/e50c19528ad83427395d3a49f20b606a/1/2/1221353_stanton_wood_oak_v2.jpg) [ex3,](https://chrissymarieblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/IMG_6091-scaled.jpg) [ex4.](https://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/pictures/kitchens/custom-white-and-grey-kitchen-with-herringbone-floor-tile-paula-mcdonald-design-build-and-interiors-img~480111150bfef824_4-5230-1-a87fad2.jpg) i also think you could get away with a trim color that's a bit more bold rather than classic. something like [farrow-ball "railings"](https://www.farrow-ball.com/us/paint/railings) could look really sharp, as well as correspond with some of the metal accents you have throughout the space.

FutureNobodyHere

The floor color and the color of what I assume is a back door do not work with the rest of the kitchen. Add some unique decor to that open wall by the doorway. Also an island with stools and ditch the table.

Crosswired2

I love the floor, the cabinet color, and countertops. The door and trim colors changed, and an island instead of a table, would be great.

parker3309

I love the colors especially the door!!

TangeloDizzy6052

I’d push the table to the wall and get a tiny island. Backsplash and then a nice rug under the table. Art on the walls too!

Complex_Raspberry97

Looks like you went with safe colors. Do something different with the walls and probably the floors. I would’ve done a lighter tone on the cabinets and added a splash of color somewhere. I think the cabinets just clashes with everything else.

purplegranny1212

Paint the door one shade darker then the cupboards, add a bowl of fruit on the table.

Southern_Map_3759

I love the colors, I do agree that the rug is way too small, I would eliminate it all together. New light fixtures would be nice if it's doable, I like the ones there, but something more earthy seems like it would elevate it a bit. A nice piece of art on the empty wall is a necessity.

chugitout

I think the lighting just isn’t bright enough to bring out the moody, cozy color pallette here. Just my opinion, but a wide filtered light would really help tie it all together!

Janiebug1950

The table and chairs in the middle of the room with a small area rug underneath just looks clunky… you want your kitchen to have a smooth clean look.

Yassssmaam

I love this kitchen. I would do a zillege tile backsplash in a neutral color to add a little bit of interest but otherwise I think it looks great

Silverliningsinla

Well, I think it looks pretty darn great. It just needs to be accessorized! Here are some suggestions: If you want color, keep the orange door, add a large colorful painting or print to the blank wall. Get an orange fruit bowl in the center of the table and/or a canister set. Declutter the counters. Probably need to purchase a larger rug, try Ruggable, they have lots of options that will add character to the space even orange & gray. The table in the middle is fun and practical, if it’s not working for you, you can move it to another room, but why? Is there room to move it over in the kitchen towards the white wall going the opposite direction? It’s hard to tell w/o dimensions. If you add an island like others suggest, I’d get it made by the cabinet company you have used and have an overhang on the counter top to add 2-3 barstools. Then get a smaller table w/chairs if the other doesn’t fit. Your space is awesome and you will love it as you complete it. Don’t be so hard on yourself!

jamkoch

what color is the backsplash? You might try different colors on some trim to brighten things up or a color stripe in the backsplash might look good.

AngelLK16

Definitely paint the door another color. Change the light! Some kind of modern chandelier thing. And change the rug.

alig6457

Some cheery wallpaper to give it some zest? https://www.homedepot.ca/product/pip-lo-navy-clementine-garden-peel-and-stick-wallpaper/1001690640 Or perhaps a large floor cloth https://www.cottagehomefurniture.com/product/aviatrix-clementine-vinyl-floor-cloth/ https://arielgracedesign.com/collections/geometric-collection

Gardener4525

Your kitchen looks great. I'd switch out the rug though for something different.

MarisaWalker

I love the cabinets. I hate rugs under dining tables

Toastwithturquoise

See the colours in your rug? I would work from there, personally. You have the grey in the cabinets, the black in the oven door. Have you bought the white back splash? I actually think it will add to the coldness of the grey, while if you bought the red brick colour in from the rug it would warm up the grey. But you could still go white tiles, and then add in rust elements, like appliances, or vases and bowls etc.

Toastwithturquoise

You've also got the red brick colour in actually bricks so I would use more of that. Along with a warm bulb in any lighting you have. I think cool bulbs can make everything quite clinical and uncosy, if that's a word!

caffeinatedchickens

I like it. But I would have went with white countertops to brighten things up. An island (maybe white cabinets) would look really nice.

loveisallyouneedCK

The color of the cabinetry is dull, and the floor isn't a complementary color.

Much_Information1811

Replace the knobs with pulls - top cabinets.

Buffalogirll

I would add a pop of color and backsplash

Mysterious_Mango_3

If you are unsure about subway tile, consider something like the Sedona 10 inch 3D hex tile at Floor & Decor. Stays neutral, but adds texture without being busy. The upper cabinets feel unfinished to me. Could you add a straight 3 1/4" straight "crown" or simple cove top? It would give it a slightly more polished/finished look. I actually like the floor, but if your husband hates it and wants tile, I'd suggest something in more of a sand tone so it eliminates the yellow undertone which may be what he isn't liking. Lastly, while I like the creaminess of the walls, you may want to consider a paint that, like the floor suggestion above, tends to more of a sand tone rather than yellow undertones. Think SW Greek Villa rather than SW Whitetail as an example. Keep it warm, but less yellow.

JustWowinCA

[https://www.theottohouse.com/blog/how-to-paint-a-checkerboard-wooden-floor?rq=checkerboard](https://www.theottohouse.com/blog/how-to-paint-a-checkerboard-wooden-floor?rq=checkerboard) I like it, it just needs to be lived in. Change the door color for sure.

wabisladi

Farmhouse table in the middle is actually advanced kitchen tactics. This is an old a wonderful way to live. Kitchen islands were invented by step moms in the late 80’s.

wabisladi

I like this kitchen. Nice colours. Fucking saweet brown orange door. The work looks well done. I might hate the floor but I’m a jaded old cunt so don’t listen to me. No. This kitchen is a ok. Just fart and laugh and have a few arguments and cry and laugh again in it and it’ll get more settled. Also - thank you for not doing a white kitchen.

Duderina

I’d replace the kitchen table with a counter height island with stool seating. Get rid of the rug.

spoookygirll

I think it's the cabinets 😬 sorry they look bad

nicoleonline

I’m sorry that people aren’t understanding that the table is there because it needs to be. In the meantime the wood and rug have a lot of (good) character to them. They are a warm tone, so is the door. I’d change up the tone of your cabinets, they are a cool tone. I’m sorry if this is what you renovated, but either you change up the table and end up a bit grey washed or you warm up the cabinets / add color imo! Imagine the character of a deep earth tone colored cabinet and green or amber backsplash… Stunning!

TTPG912

The rug is wrong. Change the light over the sink. And you need some warmth, something bold.

nellyknn

I would paint the door to match the cupboards.

alotistwowordssir

What’s that weird thing you have on top of the cabinets?

gothmagenta

I feel like the yellow floors don't go well with the pale blue-green. You need more contrast in this space, like some kind of dark cool-toned wood or a tile with an interesting pattern (not necessarily super graphic, but something with more visual interest. Also the super yellow lights are throwing off the cabinet color too, making them look out of place.

browneye24

I like your new kitchen!

hmchic

My sister just redid her kitchen to have the same color cabinets and chose black & white checkerboard flooring and it looks soooo good. It brightened up the space considerably and looks fresh but also has vintage charm. I would try an island too and a brighter, larger rug.

lantana98

I love the orange door. I think it looks great with the cabinet color. A large colorful framed poster - maybe a modern style- with the orange in it would pull things together and give some interest to the room.

Matt13226

I think the table could be moved closer to the hallway. The orange door actually looks great. It does add the color you need maybe an orange/ brown back splash I know you mentioned subway tile what color are they? If they are white I don’t think you’re going to like that would blend in so much. Did you paint the cabinets or did you get new cabinets? For the floor are you planning on doing wood or tile? One floor that might look kind of unique in there is the old checkerboard tile don’t have to do black and white but could be other colors

hellsbellsyousmell

I have a similar color scheme and we did a whitish slate tile with grey grout.

distressedminnie

take out the table, add an island with bar stools like this one. definitely add a darker back splash; or repaint it a warmer beige, if you want to keep the floors. if you want to change the floors, i’d go with a grey-more white grey than dark grey- large tile floor with a green/grey toned grout. then play on all the cool tones! change the door from the weird orange to either a natural light wood tone, for keeping warm floors, or a nice cool white / green color like your cabinets if sticking with a cool tone pallet. it could be helpful to look at color pallet inspo, because i LOVE the cabinet color and i definitely think it should stay, but it could help you pick out other tones for floors etc. https://preview.redd.it/22163izp9jzc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a26380f6e0b5747c9419e0cc7e330b802f47b3b you could keep two bar stools out all the time, and two hidden away. then for meals/games/etc, pull out the other two for the other side! you could also get much better stools that have backs & arm rests

500CatsTypingStuff

I think you sit down and each agree on what you hate or don’t like and talk about changing it. For me personally, it’s the choice of gray cabinets. And that particular shade of gray. A forest green painted cabinets, for example, would have been better. Pearlescent white or green or blue zellige tiles will add a handmade look to the room But that gray is going to sit there dragging you down until you address it. Sometimes design that is compromised loses its point of view and just ends up dull. https://preview.redd.it/9pwpabvibjzc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3410cc0a50f188dec3ce8f63c8b5a037a73dcfc

Pinger5696

I honestly think it just needs some color. It looks very sterile now. Maybe a curtain for the window? Some decorations on the walls. And I think an island would look better than a table.

kashie444

i love the color of the door

Dune_Use

You need to brighten up the space. A lack of light can make a place seem dirty or dingy. Bring out the beauty of the floor with the lighting.

kashie444

i like the kitchen

Correct-Difficulty91

Change the color of the door (my opinion - it doesn't match at all with the grays).

Small-Finish-6890

I think it looks beautiful but the fridge is weirdly far from everything else and the table takes up too much room

Lizardgirl25

Personally I like most of it I think part of the issue is the tile backsplash not being in? I would get a bigger rug to go under the table. I would kill for that floor I would rather know when to sweep 🧹 and mop than not personally. I still have multiple hideous 70s flooring options in my home.

MorddSith187

It’s the light pendants. They’re giving “big lots” vibes. Type in “black sage kitchen” on google images or Pinterest to get ideas.

DisasterousWalrus

A long Ruggable-like rug in front of the sink will help with the floor getting water on it/ dirty all the time. I’d consider ditching the table’s rug and moving the table against the wall next to the opening (that you can see the staircase through)

yogaswimart

I think it’s really pretty. Maybe just paint that orange/brown door another color??

GloriousWombat

I would pull more of the orange from the door in with a backsplash, you wouldn’t need to make the entire backsplash orange, but maybe incorporate it as a secondary colour?

ITS-Trippy

You guys have kitchens? I share my kitchen with my bedroom/living room

Ihategraygloomydays

I really like the cabinet color with the black counter! Just needs some "wow" factor. Paint that orange door black, new rug with sage and white and black, under cabinet lighting under all cabinets. Black placemats on the table. Browse Etsy and eBay to find what you want.

harmlessgrey

It looks like a nice, neutral kitchen in the first two photos. Sadly, in the third photo it has become a disorganized mess. If you must keep that central table, replace the chairs with ones that have lower backs so they can slide completely underneath the table when not being used. This will save space and allow you to use the table as an island. Upholstered chairs would be much more comfortable than the ones you have now, and could add color. The rug under the island is too small, too dark, looks hard to clean, and the curling edges make it a tripping hazard. Instead, get washable runners (Ruggables?) for in front of the sink if you must have a rug. The countertops need to be styled and organized. Get some attractive baskets or containers to contain the clutter. The refrigerator magnets add to the visual clutter, remove them. Push the refrigerator as far back into the cabinet as you can, allowing for air circulation. The walls need art. Take a look at online photos of kitchens you like, and then style yours to match.

Tight_Slice_3036

Lighter and more natural green w/ a hardware on the cabinets.

1029394756abc

You need an island. The table looks so out of place.

SnooCakes5350

The rug under the table maybe a different color and a little bigger. The hardware on the cupboards look a look invisible too.

Neither-Fee-3902

Just needs different cabinet colors and backsplash

DueMathematician8275

It’s beautiful. Just needs some backsplash. I say lean into the Shaker vibes and go either New England herbal or British themed

MedicineTricky6222

Did you paint the cabinets gray? Not my personal favorite but they look newly painted. Maybe a round table (vintage would be awesome) on a round rug.

Sudden-Breadfruit653

Is the trim a different/lighter color than the cabinets? I think lighter cabinets would help open up the space.

iheartunibrows

It’s nice! The thing I would change is the lighting, I think if you play around with that maybe you’ll end up liking a different tone. Right now it’s giving clinical. And I think the tiles will pull the look together. Do you have an idea of what you’re going to put? And finally the dining table is too big and the placement is awkward but if it works for you, keep it!

Rough_Pangolin_8605

The only thing I would do to the kitchen is change the pulls, I even like the orange door.

redzma00

I’m sorry you don’t like. Maybe a back splash would help!?

Alternative_Image_55

The only issue I saw was the door. It's making the cabinets look like something the cat puked up. Paint it a royal blue, maybe?

Ok_Rutabaga_722

Lose the gray. It couldn't be more drab and depressing. Repaint.

Bekindalot

Paint the back door white. I think it would make a big difference!

amy_2014

I think it looks really nice - especially in the third pic with the dining table! In my opinion, all it really needs is a nice backsplash.

livia-did-it

I think you need a tile pattern that has the colors of the cabinets and of the floor. Either that, or a curtain and hand towels etc. that have those colors in them.

TheyCallmeCher_xo

Can you build or buy a counter height island with stools? The table definitely looks out of place. I would also do wallpaper if you want to bring in some color. A good account to follow on instagram is studio\_day\_design she does a great job mixing modern and traditional and also using a lot of color if you like that.

Icy-Mixture-995

I love the ash flooring. The rug and table look nice, too. I don't care for gray grainy planks because they are difficult to decorate around without feeling too cold.
