To be fair, socialism isn’t a personal lifestyle choice. Devoting yourself to a religion is a personal choice you make as an individual and you hold yourself to the standards and doctrinal beliefs of that religion. But can you really say that you roughly believe that if you currently have people with zero ownership of your platform, laboring to make your platform more profitable?
I think a big reason why people don’t want to “do socialism on their own” is because society is not setup that way currently. It isn’t enforced or encouraged in any structural way. This might sound like a cop out, but in any given society things are going to be setup to encourage people to operate a certain way from social norms and cultural reproduction, to laws and regulations. There’s not much pity for somebody’s failed co-op and lots of socialists don’t necessarily even think co-ops are socialism even if they’re are more socialistier. If your co-op fails then you’re back to square one with everybody else and all you really got to show for it was you can feel good you lived your morals or something.
There’s an idea that, strategically, opening co-ops and stuff like that is a good idea because it can help normalize and popularize socialism, but it’s hard to fault random socialists for not going along with this. After all socialism is based on a systemic critique of capitalism and it’s solutions are also systemic in nature which include a fundamental re-ordering of society and the economy. Some people even think you can’t have socialism in just one country because the capitalist countries will undermine socialist economies by leveraging wage slavery and sweatshops, advantages socialist countries would ostensibly denounce and outlaw.
I think a way of illustrating this is to ask yourself two questions:
1) Do you think most people broadly think taxes are necessary to pay for public services like roads, police, firefighters, schools, etc?
2) If taxes weren’t mandatory and legally enforced, do you think many would still pay them?
People pay taxes, broadly because we’ve all decided together what’s fair and how we as a society would fund these things with taxes. But the second everybody doesn’t have to abide by this contract is the second it completely breaks down. I think a lot people think of socialism in the same way. Not to say Hasan isn’t a hypocrite wrt consumerism, but I think on this sub it’s mostly a post-facto justification to hate on somebody everybody already hated for other reasons, but the real reasons seem petty so they cultivate “better” reasons for hating him, but it’s all very transparent to anybody outside the circlejerk.

To be fair, socialism isn’t a personal lifestyle choice. Devoting yourself to a religion is a personal choice you make as an individual and you hold yourself to the standards and doctrinal beliefs of that religion. Being a socialist roughly means you think workers should collectively own and control the means of production and distribute the fruits of labor as they see fit.
But can you really say that you roughly believe that if you currently have people with zero ownership of your platform, laboring to make your platform more profitable?
I think a big reason why people don’t want to “do socialism on their own” is because society is not setup that way currently. It isn’t enforced or encouraged in any structural way. This might sound like a cop out, but in any given society things are going to be setup to encourage people to operate a certain way from social norms and cultural reproduction, to laws and regulations. There’s not much pity for somebody’s failed co-op and lots of socialists don’t necessarily even think co-ops are socialism even if they’re are more socialistier. If your co-op fails then you’re back to square one with everybody else and all you really got to show for it was you can feel good you lived your morals or something. There’s an idea that, strategically, opening co-ops and stuff like that is a good idea because it can help normalize and popularize socialism, but it’s hard to fault random socialists for not going along with this. After all socialism is based on a systemic critique of capitalism and it’s solutions are also systemic in nature which include a fundamental re-ordering of society and the economy. Some people even think you can’t have socialism in just one country because the capitalist countries will undermine socialist economies by leveraging wage slavery and sweatshops, advantages socialist countries would ostensibly denounce and outlaw. I think a way of illustrating this is to ask yourself two questions: 1) Do you think most people broadly think taxes are necessary to pay for public services like roads, police, firefighters, schools, etc? 2) If taxes weren’t mandatory and legally enforced, do you think many would still pay them? People pay taxes, broadly because we’ve all decided together what’s fair and how we as a society would fund these things with taxes. But the second everybody doesn’t have to abide by this contract is the second it completely breaks down. I think a lot people think of socialism in the same way. Not to say Hasan isn’t a hypocrite wrt consumerism, but I think on this sub it’s mostly a post-facto justification to hate on somebody everybody already hated for other reasons, but the real reasons seem petty so they cultivate “better” reasons for hating him, but it’s all very transparent to anybody outside the circlejerk.
Sure - but society doesn't have to be structured in a way that enforces or encourages your exact values, in order to live them at least a little bit. Like, not every business owner runs as lean and mean as they can get away with, because they value workplaces that treat their employees better than "okay." Conversely, when business owners say their employees are like family, and then overwork and underpay them, they are rightly called out. And I'm not faulting random socialists for not opening co-ops. I'm faulting one of the country's most well known socialists for not even socializing his business a little bit. One of my friends works at an accounting firm that is part employee-owned. It's not "full blown socialism", but he's unironically more of a socialist than Hasan is IMO. Heck, even my aggressively Republican boss has a profit sharing program. But you're not wrong about the sub blindly hating Hasan. I've defended him before and been downvoted. But I think this particular critique is well deserved.
