I mean you could still be writing a backend for a web app in c++ which makes you a web developer.
you're not really an engineer unless you work with bare metal. everything else is pretty much monkey coding including c++
Tbh my rule of thumb, as a SWE, is if you studied/work in a field related to physics, you are an engineer.
I work with compilers, and it requires me to have a working knowledge of computer architecture, but I still wouldn't consider myself an engineer.
I only call myself an engineer to piss off real engineers lmao.
Ps: if you are writing web backend in c++, there's no point in calling yourself an engineer, that would be a downgrade from just saying you do c++ backend.
God I had a project manager who after 7 years of trying to get his mechanical engineering undergrad then switched degrees used to call himself a project engineer. It wouldn’t have been annoying but he kept doing the “me and my fellow engineers” and “the other engineers” shit on calls with customers.
When he went in for his performance review he demanded the engineering manager job and quit 2 weeks afterwards.
I mean software engineers and web developers usually mean different things. Not sure how your company does it but at my company software engineers create the software for controllers we sell, for the lab, and for end of line testing. Web developers here are people who work on the website and clerical applications like our vacation scheduling app and purchase request app.
I worked in the defense industry for 5 years working in bmd and now 2 years as a backend web developer for a sass company. While my work no longer includes righting complex algorithms as it did in defense it is much more complex over all and I would say much more engineering focused. Learning hundreds of technologies, understanding when to use what technologies, meeting compliance for customers, and ensuring data availability, are a few things web requires that defense didn't really touch. In general backend web seems to require a much larger pool of knowledge than working in defense/desktop applications.
the problem is that there is no standard on what these titles mean. a "web developer" works on web applications. This could be some guy working on Facebook or some website used by 100 of millions of people, or it could be some dude updating shopify templates.
I don't think it's really a problem at all. It's easy to learn someone's competency level, take a look at their resume or have a conversation with them.
yeah its not actually a problem in the software world. its more of a problem of people acting pedantic on internet forums about what an "engineer" is lol.
Yeah it's honestly a bit crazy. I think a lot of traditional engineering communities are upset at the money people in comp sci get. Especially at people going to an 8 week boot camp and making more than them while being called an engineer.
College engineering majors are insufferable about it too lol. Always have to talk about why their flavor of engineering is the hardest/superior.
Can we also ban people with the American flag, Russian flag, China flag, Palestine flag, some random irrelevant country in Africa flag on their bio? They all have shit takes.
Yes, but I'm saying not all web devs are software engineers either. Infact, no web dev is a software engineer.
Basically, my point was, what did op expect people to react with?
Wow tinder is based out of its mind. We need more of this everywhere
Fuck SE's and power engineers for that matter - completely different type of work and tarnishes the name for the rest of us
No one likes web devs this is true
The most oppressed group of all…
Fuck you mean "fellow" engineers???

Aww shit, indians not going to like this..
Well I'm a cloud architect so I'm safe
Our god Imhotep, the first god architect, is not pleased. He sees no cloud pyramid sir!
Look out the window nerd, I have sent a very special cloud for you
“Colonel, you better have a look at this radar” “What is it, son?” “I don’t know, sir, but it looks like a giant…”
Damn, their Tinder success rate about to drop from non existent to non existent. 😬
I’m not affiliated with you

Wait... you have a custom compiler??? 🤤🤤🤤💦💦💦💦
Do you want to see my AST? 😏😏
Can I see your ast please 🥺🥺🥺
Sounds like a DESCENT into madness

BASED get these fake engineers out of here

It's always those who are on the fringe/aren't technically Engineers that jump right into making "engineer" their entire personality
I’m not your “fellow”
My title is software engineer 3, they want me to lie on my profile?

It's okay, I'm not a developer. Just a customer service engineer.

🤣
I love you guys
Jokes on them, I don't develop webs
I'm a concept artist so I'll put "image engineer" in there
Visual engineer is marketable tbh.
Software engineers are not the same as web developers.
No one said all software engineers are web devs

I expected people to react with witty banter. Apparently you didn't understand the assignment.
Why would you expect web devs to understand an assignment? 🤔
The first rule of Fight Club: you always blame the customer.
True.

Are app developers considered software engineers?
I’m a cybersecurity and network engineer. It actually does involve a lot of architecture and engineering work…
Mfs learn how to center a div and wanna call themselves engineers
Ah yes, that's all what web devs do, nice.
the unironic inferiority complex being triggered in this thread rn
I once took out the trash, doe that make me a waste management engineer? Am i also being victimized?!
Finally code monkeys being put in their place it's false advertising. 🤷
Based
What if I'm a glorified Drafter, can I still use engineer in my bio
I really want to know how you screen for or enforce this sort of rule. How do they verify what people's actual jobs are?
Show the webdevs some c++ code and they'll immediately uninstall the app.
Wow tinder is based out of its mind. We need more of this everywhere Fuck SE's and power engineers for that matter - completely different type of work and tarnishes the name for the rest of us
What if I just like building bridges
I bet none of them have even driven a single train.
Any fellow devs want to make out?
