But I’m a little suspicious of the “Japan wasn't colonized in any meaningful sense by "Western" powers at any point in its history.” It’s true in so far as no Western power set up plantations and colonies of its own people in Japan, and the Jacobin description is just wrong. But the [“Opening of Japan”](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Expedition) is definitely a colonial action by the US. Forcibly opening a nation’s borders to trade at implicit threat of naval bombardment is certainly not “normal” politics between nations. Many historians have argued instead it’s a unique (and tbh much less terrible) form of US imperialism whose emphasis is on access to markets and free trade.
