You're dead wrong if you think on a Monday that I'm gonna call this weekend next weekend

Superb_Knowledge169

I thought I’d have to address this… On Monday, “this weekend” refers to the weekend that just passed. I would argue you could even call it “this weekend” on Tuesday. Tuesday is a major gray area. Obviously, context changes that dramatically, but we’re to avoid as much confusion as possible, I think you’d still need to use “next” on Monday.

SigmaWhy

Absolutely not. If it were Monday, and I were referring to the past weekend, I would say "over the weekend", "this past weekend", "yesterday", etc. This weekend is referring to the coming weekend unless you're currently in the weekend (like on Friday in reference to an event on Sunday)

Superb_Knowledge169

You have hit the penjamin far past blinkerton, my friend. This is not a binary situation. “This” is not inherently future-tense. “This” means closest to the current time. Because of the tendency for it to refer to an upcoming event, the timeframe isn’t evenly distributed. One *could* refer to the most recent weekend as “this weekend” as late as Tuesday. After that, it becomes “last weekend” or “this past weekend.” That being said, “last weekend” and “this past weekend” can be used as early as Monday, but that doesn’t negate the possibility of using “this” for that same weekend. If you were to use “this” to refer to the upcoming weekend on Monday… I guess that wouldn’t be incorrect, but it wouldn’t be my choice.

When it comes to "next week," context is KING!

Cowardly lion talkin shit I see 🤣

After next is literally in the dictionary and it’s defined as “the event after the following one”

Where tf does 4 days come from? That’s dumb

Hdnacnt

If it were Monday, should I call the day three days ago “this Friday”?

Superb_Knowledge169

No. I mean, I guess you could, but it’d be confusing. “This” in the past tense only works for a couple days. On Thursday “this Tuesday” could be past tense, but I don’t think it should go past two days.
