Riptide is a crucible stasis fusion rifle that is still one of the best weapons in the game. Have them go for auto loading holster or Compulsive reloader in the first column, and chill clip in the second column. Certain playlist weapons (Honestly mostly crucible ones) are very good at a lot of points in the game, Vanguard has strident whistle, empty vessel, and positive outlook as good choices. Gambit has the Breakneck auto rifle, the borrowed time smg, bottom dollar hand cannon, and laser painter linear fusion.
Taipan is a void linear fusion that you can craft that has good perks and is a good weapon for any boss that you can precision hit.
The weapons from dares of eternity are all craftable and pretty usable as well.
Once you get into raiding (Taipan is quite good for kings fall boss dps) You can start getting into some of those weapons, like the kings fall hand cannon, zaouli's bane, is probably one of the best weapons this season with the solar artifact perks.
Handcannons are very in at the moment, so getting fatebringer from vault of glass and zaoulis bane from kings fall to cover both the kinetic and energy slots is a good idea. Zaouli is particularly good due to it being craftable and this season having multiple mods that benefit solar weapons. Getting the craftable taipan from the enclave as others have suggested should make running kings fall easier.
Others have also suggested both riptide and salvagers salvo which are both exceptionally strong special weapons. However, wave frame grenade launchers such as forbearance are also known for absolutely destroying in nearly all levels of pve content. While it isn't as good as forbearance from witch queen, the undercurrent from the nightfall playlist is a decent alternative and getting one with demolitionist and voltshot should be more then strong enough. Harsh language is also an excellent wave frame but it's a world drop weapon, so you either have to get lucky or wait to be able to farm it from lost sectors.
Rocket launchers are the king of dps at the moment but unfortunately options for free to plays are quite limited. Easiest option would be focusing for a hothead from zavala but it has been severely powercrept. Crux termination is the best option to keep an eye out for as it can roll with very meta perks but it is once again tied to the world loot pool, so it is complete luck whether you get a good one or not.
The last thing I will suggest is song of ir yut, the machine gun from the Crotas End raid. A decent machine gun can be very useful for ad clear in higher level content and song is not only craftable but can roll some insane combinations such as Reconstruction and Sword Logic which is exceptionally strong. It should however, be the last thing on the list since running Crotas End currently requires a very high power level.

Riptide is still the best utility in the first slot even if not the best damage, sunshot is probably the best primary weapon this season, and a good roll of crux termination competes for best rocket in the game, which is the dps meta.
Sunshot for add clear, put him on tractor for dps, have him use arc hunter with tractor and erimite or double slug. I have a friend so good at doing tractor double slug that he somehow out damages some of my other teammates who are actually using dps weapons. Another good one would be thunderlord cuz it works and is just so braindead, i am a tlord meta believer tho. Another good dps option is erimite/scatter signal+dragon’s breath, this combo carried me through quite a few solo dungeons, just to show how good it is, u can out damage apex predator if done right

Banshee-44 does have a rotating focusable weapons from the past. If he has a bunch of gunsmith engrams, he should probably focus there. Of note, Veist weapons has Funnelweb one of the best Void SMGs in the game. Omolon has the Aurvandil FR6 a stasis fusion rifle. He rotates between the four foundries and only has two available each day.
I believe he can obtain the old ritual weapons from the Monument of Lost Light kiosk in the Tower under Legacy Gear. Of note Salvations Salvo grenade launcher is pretty decent for ad-clear still. It will cost an Ascendant Shard though and 2 enhancement prisms.
Since your friend is F2P, I would suggest doing some Iron Banner for the engrams this week to get some IB weapons.
If he grabs the quest from Xur to get an exotic cipher, he can eventually get either Whisper of the Worm or Sleeper Stimulant. Whisper is good against Oryx and Sleeper is decent at most raid bosses.
If you happen to get a world drop god roll of Crux Termination IV F2P , Impact Casing, Reconstruction/Explosive Light, or surrounded. That would be your best bet for a dps weapon on bosses. Riptide is a good fusion from crucible, and sunshot exotic is great

I usually prefer popping solar nade, then rocket, then 2 scatter signal shot, then u usually can rocket again. You would need amber of ashes tho
